WOW! What a September.
Had a good turnout at our business meeting on September 8. Six members cars
were pulled from the hat to be displayed on another 1000 fans. The fans (which
was a Jan Lambert great idea) has been a real success. Folks don't throw these
away like they do our Cruise In flyers. And a decision was made for the club to
pursue a Friday, January 22, 2016, visit to the Corvette museum in Bowling Green.
Cost is $85.00 per person and that includes transportation, a private plant tour,

lunch, tour of the museum, hot rod exhibit, and a new Cave In exhibit. We have 12
members committed and they are:

We need a total of 26 members to commit for this outing to take place. So please let

We had a huge turnout at the Eva Beach Festival for our September outing. We
had 30 or so cars, mostly our members. The folks with the festival were very
pleased to have us at their event. They included us in their advertising and we were
mentioned in a Chronicle news article regarding the event. I think this will be an
annual outing for us. The entertainment was great, which means to me, I could
understand the lyrics and didn't have to wear ear plugs. Really good music. The
food and craft vendors were awesome. The rain held off just long enough for most
of us to get our cars home to a dry shop. Thanks to Deb Daniel for encouraging
our club to attend.
Then on to our participation in the fair. We decided to get a booth for the club. If
you didn't get a chance to visit, we had a continuous photo presentation of our club
events, cars, members and etc. This really got fair goers attention, they would just
stop in their tracks and watch. Then a Huge THANKS to Milton Howe, he let us
use several of his banners and auto portraits to decorate the booth. We passed out
information on the club, cruise in flyers and sold a few t-shirts. The intent of the
fair participation was two fold. First, it is important for us to participate in
community events i.e., Relay of Life, Eva Beach, Memorial Ride, Christmas
Parade, JERA picnic, fund raisers and etc. Second, we get to show and talk about
our club. Thanks to the volunteers that help set up, take down and man the booth
during the fair. And I hope I don't miss anybody:

And then the finale. The Benton County Sheriff's department made a huge sweep
at the Cruise In with 17 arrests. Arrests were made for being a Mommy's boy, too
loud, best banker, best wife, best vet and etc. Deputy Carter made the arrests,
cuffed the wrong doers and placed them in the back seat of his patrol cruiser. Most
of the folks said they had never been arrested, but several seem to know the drill.
$5.00 was the bail. I am sure the photos are making the rounds. Then another hard
working performance by the Tennessee Blues Brothers. I almost had heart failure
and I was just watching. They really worked hard for our members and visitors
enjoyment. FYI Clinic had some outstanding bbq chicken quarters. We appreciate
their work in our community and helping us as a food vendor. Be sure and help
them out with donations, they need it and the work they do is wonderful. Then
Sheriff Christopher arrives and makes his investigation of the autos present. After
his CSI analysis he gives the Sheriff's Choice Trophy to Vickie Muzzle for her '49
Mercury. And then to top off the Muzzles' day, they win money and two door
prizes. It was good day to be a Muzzle.
Even though the rain hurt our attendance (again) Stanley tells me that he
deposited over $500 from the cruise in. Be sure and thank Sheriff Christopher and
Deputy Carter for their appearance at the cruise in and the important / dangerous
work they do for us every day.

September 3, 2015 Meeting Minutes
The monthly meeting of the Legend Cruisers Car Club was called to order by
President Bill Ray at 6pm September 3,2015 at Country & Western Restaurant.
The prayer concerns included Mike Shelton, William Baker, and Sonna Cole.
President, Bill Ray gave the prayer.
The minutes of the August meeting were read and approved as was the
treasurer’s report.
The next cruise-In will be September 26th. Fans are ready to give to
participants and to distribute at future events. TRRD funds paid for the fans.
President Bill Ray gave a report on the funeral procession for Pat Barger the
club participated in. The club also had 29 cars participate in the Chemours
(JERA) annual picnic.
President Bill Ray asked for suggestions for future club activities. One of the
suggestions was a trip to the Corvette Museum.
Tentative plans for a visit to the Corvette Museum are set for January 23,
2016. Participants will travel to Bowling Green, KY on a Coffee Break Tours bus.
The tout will cost $85 per person and will include a visit to the museum and a tour
of the assemble plant.
The cruise-in committee will meet Sept 15th . All club members are invited
and encouraged to attend.
We are ordering more fans with new car photos on them. The photos will the
cars of Ronnie Pierce, J. B. Hendrix, Diane Shelton, Chris Stone, Sue Arnold and
Vince Roth.
The September Cruise-In entertainment will be the Blues Brothers and the
food vendor will be the FYI Clinic. Sheriff Kenny Christopher may be issuing

warrants for all you bad guys so make sure your friends have the $5 required to
get you out of the pokie.
Rick Lambert, with the help of Deb Daniel, has made arrangements for the
club to participate in the Eva Beach Music and Arts Festival Saturday September
19th. We will meet at Auto Zone in Camden and cruise to Eva at 11:00. There will
be a designated parking area for our cars. It should be a fun day of food, fun and
music.
The meeting adjourned at 6:20PM.

The 4th Saturday of each month beginning April 25th through October 2015, we sponsor a
cruise-in at the court square in Camden, TN starting at 3:00 pm.
Bring your ride and join in the fun, food, music and fellowship.
Notice, every time you bring your ride and sign-in, your name will be in the October drawing
for cash and other prizes. The biggest event of the year!

Membership in the Legend Cruisers Car Club shall be comprised of individuals
dedicated to the preservation and common love for automobiles. Formed in
November 2011, the Club exists to create good fellowship, car safety, skill and
sportsmanship. We want our members to participate in automobile related
activities to include cruises, picnics, shows, and rod runs. We encourage support of
other car clubs’ events.
Qualifications
Members must own a 20 year old American made automobile. Members must have
a valid Tennessee Drivers License, a person of good character, fellowship, and
sportsmanship. Members must be willing to participate in club activities and
business meetings. Any member, who regularly commits unsafe driving acts or
whose personal conduct is otherwise detrimental to the purposes and reputation of
the Club, may be suspended or expelled from membership in the Club. No alcohol
is allowed at any of our events. All new members must submit an application for
membership to the Club Treasurer and pay the appropriate membership fee of
$25. (see below). It would be great if the applicant could make a regular business
meeting before submitting application to meet everyone.
Application process
Please complete the application, attached, and present it to anyone you know to be
a member or present the application at a regular business meeting. Our business
meetings are the second Tuesday of each month at the Country and Western Steak
House, in Camden, at 6pm. For additional information please feel free to contact
our President, Bill Ray, 731-584-5349 or any officer of the club. A complete copy of
the Club by-laws is available at your request. Annual membership is $25.00.
Applicants applying after July 1st will pay dues of $15.00 for the remainder of that
year.

HISTORY OF THE CAR RADIO
Seems like cars have always had radios, but they didn't.
Here's the story:
One evening, in 1929, two young men named William Lear and Elmer Wavering drove their
girlfriends to a lookout point high above the Mississippi River town of Quincy, Illinois, to
watch the sunset. It was a romantic night to be sure, but one of the women observed that it
would be even nicer if they could listen to music in the car.
Lear and Wavering liked the
idea. Both men had tinkered
with radios (Lear served as a
radio operator in the U.S. Navy
during World War I) and it
wasn't long before they were
taking apart a home radio and
trying to get it to work in a car.
But it wasn't easy: automobiles
have
ignition
switches,
generators, spark plugs, and
other electrical equipment that generate noisy static interference, making it nearly impossible
to listen to the radio when the engine was running. One by one, Lear
and Wavering identified and eliminated each source of electrical
interference.
When they finally got their radio to work, they took it to a radio
convention in Chicago. There they met Paul Galvin, owner of
Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. He made a product called a
"battery eliminator", a device that allowed battery-powered radios
to run on household AC current. But as more homes were wired for
electricity, more radio manufacturers made AC-powered radios.
Galvin needed a new product to manufacture. When he met Lear and Wavering at the radio

convention, he found it. He believed that mass-produced, affordable car radios had the
potential to become a huge business.
Lear and Wavering set up shop in Galvin's factory, and when they perfected their first radio,
they installed it in his Studebaker. Then Galvin went to a local banker to apply for a loan.
Thinking it might sweeten the deal, he had his men install a radio in the banker's Packard.
Good idea, but it didn't work – Half an hour after the installation, the banker's Packard
caught on fire. (They didn't get the loan.)
Galvin didn't give up. He drove his Studebaker nearly 800 miles to Atlantic City to show off
the radio at the 1930 Radio Manufacturers Association convention. Too broke to afford a
booth, he parked the car outside the convention hall and cranked up the radio so that passing
conventioneers could hear it. That idea worked -- He got enough orders to put the radio into
production.
WHAT'S IN A NAME
That first production model was called the 5T71. Galvin decided he needed to come up with
something a little catchier. In those days many companies in the phonograph and radio
businesses used the suffix "ola" for their names Radiola, Columbiola, and Victrola were three
of the biggest. Galvin decided to do the same thing, and since his radio was intended for use in
a motor vehicle, he decided to call it the Motorola.
But even with the name change, the radio still had problems: When Motorola went on sale in
1930, it cost about $110 uninstalled, at a time when you could buy a brand-new car for $650,
and the country was sliding into the Great Depression. (By that measure, a radio for a new car
would cost about $3,000 today.)
In 1930, it took two men several days to put in a car radio -- The dashboard had to be taken
apart so that the receiver and a single speaker could be installed, and the ceiling had to be cut
open to install the antenna.
These early radios ran on their own batteries, not on the car battery, so holes had to be cut into
the floorboard to accommodate them. The installation manual had eight complete diagrams
and 28 pages of instructions. Selling complicated car radios that cost 20 percent of the price of
a brand-new car wouldn't have been easy in the best of times, let alone during the Great
Depression –

Galvin lost money in 1930 and struggled for a couple of years after that. But things picked up
in 1933 when Ford began offering Motorola's pre-installed at the factory. In 1934 they got
another boost when Galvin struck a deal with B.F. Goodrich tire company to sell and install
them in its chain of tire stores. By then the price of the radio, with installation included, had
dropped to $55. The Motorola car radio was off and running. (The name of the company
would be officially changed from Galvin Manufacturing to "Motorola" in 1947.)
In the meantime, Galvin continued to develop new uses for car radios. In 1936, the same year
that it introduced push-button tuning, it also introduced the Motorola Police Cruiser, a
standard car radio that was factory preset to a single frequency to pick up police broadcasts.

In 1940 he developed the first handheld two-way radio -- The Handy-Talkie –for the U. S.
Army. A lot of the communications technologies that we take for granted today were born in
Motorola labs in the years that followed World War II.
In 1947 they came out with the first television for under $200.
In 1956 the company introduced the world's first pager; in 1969 came the radio and television
equipment that was used to televise Neil Armstrong' s first steps on the Moon.
In 1973 it invented the world's first handheld cellular phone. Today Motorola is one of the
largest cell phone manufacturers in the world. And it all started with the car radio.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO the two men who installed the first radio in Paul Galvin's car?
Elmer Wavering and William Lear, ended up taking very different paths in life. Wavering
stayed with Motorola. In the 1950's he helped change the automobile experience again when
he developed the first automotive alternator, replacing inefficient and unreliable generators.
The invention lead to such luxuries as power windows, power seats, and, eventually, airconditioning.
Lear also continued inventing. He holds more than 150 patents. Remember eight-track tape
players? Lear invented that. But what he's really famous for are his contributions to t he field
of aviation. He invented radio direction finders for planes, aided in the invention of the
autopilot, designed the first fully automatic aircraft landing system, and in 1963 introduced his
most famous invention of all, the Lear Jet, the world's first mass-produced, affordable business
jet. (Not bad for a guy who dropped out of school after the eighth grade.)
Sometimes it is fun to find out how some of the many things that we take for granted actually
came into being!

Eva Beach Music and Arts Festival
September 19, 2015
The Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park “Friends of the Park” invited the Legend
Cruisers Car Club to cruise to Eva Beach and display our classic rods. We met at
Auto Zone in Camden and convoyed to Eva. We arrived with 22 vehicles to a
warm reception by the guests of the festival. By early afternoon we had 30 classic
hot rods lined up and drew lots of attention from the hundreds of folks attending

1. In 1964 Jan and Dean had a US Top Ten hit with "Dead Man's Curve". The singer was
driving a Sting Ray. What kind of car was he racing against in the song?
Answer: b. Jaguar XKE
The song depicted a race between a Corvette Sting Ray and a Jaguar XKE beginning at
Sunset and Vine. It topped out at Number Eight on the US Billboard charts.
The song was a collaborative effort between songwriters Brian Wilson, Jan Berry, Roger
Christian and Artie Kornfeld. Roger Christian originally had the two racers ending in a
dead heat but Jan Berry insisted that the race end with a wreck.
Several versions were released. The original version was a cut from their 1963 "Drag
City" LP. When it was remixed as a single release horns, strings and crash noises were
added. The duo's "Filet Of Soul" album (1966) contained an earlier rejected mix while
other versions appeared on live albums.
The old lady was driving a Super Stock Dodge in their 1964 hit, "The Little Old Lady
from Pasadena". "Bucket'T'" was released by the duo the following year and "Schlock Rod
Part 1" was the flip side to their 1963 release "Drag City".

According to the lyrics the GTO in the song was powered by a 389. The GTO made its
debut the year the song was released and was in production for a decade. John
DeLorean was an engineer for Pontiac when the GTO was conceived. The inspiration
was derived from the Ferrari 250 GTO.
The original model was based on the LeMans and featured a 389 cubic inch V8 engine
rated at 325 horsepower. The 389 came from the factory with a Carter four barrel

carburetor and a three-speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter so the three
deuces and the 4-speed was apparently a modification done by songwriter John Wilkin.
The 327 and 396 were popular GM engines and the 440 was by Chrysler Motors.

Songwriters Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich composed "Red Corvette" during the heyday
of car songs. "I Go, You Go" was the only other song attributed to Ellie Gee and The Jets.
When Ellie was a teenager she released a song titled "Silly Isn't It" as Ellie Gaye.
In 1962 she married Jeff Barry. She wrote or co-wrote several hits including "Leader of
the Pack", "Hanky Panky", "Be My Baby" and "River Deep, Mountain High". In addition
to her recording efforts she was a session singer who sang backup on many of Neil
Diamond's early hits.
"Little Red Corvette" was a single from Prince's 1983 "1999" album.
"Pink Cadillac" was written by Bruce Springsteen in 1982 for his "Nebraska" album.
"Long White Cadillac" was released by Country artist Dwight Yoakam. The Delicates
recorded "Black And White Thunderbird".

The Ford Model B started production with the model year 1932 and had several updates
from Ford's popular Model A. Beginning in the forties the 1932 model Ford became
extremely popular with hot rod enthusiasts because it could be modified in a number of
ways. The car was manufactured as a 5-window coupe as well as a 3-window Deluxe
Coupe model featuring rear-hinged suicide doors.
Brian Wilson and Roger Christian composed "Little Deuce Coupe", which also became the
title of the Beach Boys' fourth album. The band used the song to introduce the members
of the group during live performances.
The recording session for "Little Deuce Coupe" and Surfer Girl" was the last one
featuring David Marks before Al Jardine reunited with the group.

"Still Cruisin'" was one of numerous car songs released by The Beach Boys. In 1989 "Still
Cruisin'" was the name of the 26th album by the Beach Boys. The single of "Still Cruisin”
was featured on the soundtrack to "Lethal Weapon 2", released the same year. Another
song from the album, "Kokomo", rose to the top of the US charts and was featured in the
movie "Cocktail".
"Jaguar and Thunderbird" was released by Berry in 1960. "No Money Down" reached
Number Eight in the US for Chuck Berry and he was driving a brand new "air mobile"
in "You Can't Catch Me". "Dear Dad" was another vehicle song by Chuck Berry.
6. What type of vehicle was Johnny Cash building with pilfered parts in his 1976 single "One

The song related the story of an assembly worker in Detroit building Cadillacs who
realized he may never be able to afford one. He devised a plan to start stealing parts
and after many years of smuggling parts home he assembled a strange Cadillac with
parts from each year from 1953 to 1973. There was only one fin on the car but it had
three headlights.
"One Piece At A Time" topped the US Hot Country Singles chart when it was released.
The management of Hilltop Auto Salvage in Nashville actually constructed a vehicle
from many models of Caddy parts and for several years it was parked outside of Cash's
Henderson, Tennessee, House of Cash before going into storage.

released a version in 1993 and Dwight Yoakam's rendition was done in 2004. Finn Pave
Maijanen, Meat Loaf and David Lindley have also paid homage to the song with their
versions.
K. C. Douglas and Robert Geddins composed the original song as "Mercury Boogie". K. C.
Douglas actually worked in a garage. He was one of the performers at the San
Francisco Blues Festival in the early seventies and played in coffeehouses until his death
in 1975.
Years later Ford Motor Company obtained the rights to "Mercury Blues" and changed
the lyrics to sell Ford Trucks.

a concert. "Workin' at the Car Wash Blues", "I Got A Name" and "I'll Have to Say I Love
You in a Song" were posthumous releases from an album he recorded shortly before his
death.
"Rusty Chevrolet" was done by Da Yoopers. The Brian Setzer Orchestra recorded "'49
Mercury Blues" and "Rocket 88" was originally done by Jackie Brenston and his Delta
Cats.

Robert Johnson recorded "Terraplane Blues" as one of a number of songs recorded in
sessions held in a makeshift studio at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. He
recorded the songs while facing the wall, leading many to reinforce the belief that
Johnson was a shy performer. Blues historians have speculated that he faced the wall to
enhance his sound, a technique referred to as "corner loading". The first songs released
after the sessions were "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and "Terraplane Blues", making
them quite likely the only songs Johnson heard from the sessions before his death.
"Terraplane Blues" was a regional hit when it was released, selling approximately 5,000
copies.
The Terraplane model was built by the Hudson Motor Car Company from 1932 to 1938.
10. "Beep Beep" was a 1958 Novelty Song by The Playmates. It depicted a race between the

The song related how a compact Nash Rambler kept up with a powerful Cadillac only to

The Connecticut based Playmates obtained a recording contract with Roulette Records
in 1958. They released a single titled "Jo-Ann" to jump on the Calypso craze of the late
fifties. Their next release was "Beep Beep" and became an instant hit, reaching Number
Four on the US charts and remaining on the charts for three months. They followed up
with "What Is Love" and "Wait For Me" before braking up in the mid-sixties.
"Crown Victoria Custom '51" was sung by Jerry Lee Lewis, "V-8 Ford (Going To Your
Funeral)" was by Buddy Moss and "Hot Rod Lincoln" was originally recorded by Charlie
Ryan.

We are Jerry and Laura Lamb. We are
the proud owners of a 1965 Ford
Mustang!
I have wanted one since I was 16 when an
older girl at my school had one. I was so
jealous and thought she was about the
coolest chick ever! I never dreamt that I
would own one someday.
Jerry and I were married in 2006. He
promised then he would get me a
Mustang for our 10th anniversary. That
plan changed a little when Wendell Stone decided to trade his to Scarlett cars.
Jerry was working
in Paris at the time
and he saw it on his
way home one day.
He called me and
said “get down
here right now!” I
thought he wanted
to show me a car
“He” wanted. I
knew as soon as I
pulled in the lot
that I would have
that Mustang. I
think it was only there a few days. Thanks to my loving husband, I had it the day
after I saw it. I am so thankful that I learned to drive a stick shift when I was
young.

Her name is Lola. I drive her all the time. Wendell Stone and Ricky Hensley did
the restoration. I never dreamt of having one that would sit in the garage, so I
drive her any chance I get. (but not when it’s raining)
We also have two amazing
children Summer 21 and Sam
15. Summer is in her final
year of Pre-Med at UT
Knoxville and Sam is a
sophomore
at
Camden
Central. The kids and I are
from Camden. Jerry moved
here from Dresden. Jerry
currently is a District Manager
for FREDS. He has stores in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. I work at the
Hwy 641 branch of the APEX Bank of Camden.
Jerry has just purchased a 1963 Ford Pickup that he will restore as he has more
time at home.
We love being in the car club and hope to participate in many more events in the
future.

most places the day finally turned into a beautiful over cast day for our classics
and friends to gather for fun, food and music.
