So much more than

2008 Annual Report
Dear Friends,
Preparing an annual report provides the opportunity to pause and reflect on all that has
been accomplished in the past year. Despite the economic upheaval that jolted the country
in 2008, we at Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly continued to do well at what we
do best: offer quality affordable housing to seniors with limited financial resources where
they can engage in a full life and be part of a vibrant community. In addition to providing
exceptional housing for the 1,300 tenants who currently live at JCHE, we also made great
strides to provide senior housing in the underserved MetroWest region. We plan to break
ground for Shillman House on the Weinberg Campus in the Nobscot area of Framingham
in 2009.
Our model of independent housing with supportive services makes it possible for seniors to
age well in the community, and postpone or avoid a nursing home. In 2008, our tenants
lived at JCHE an average of 10.5 years. Only 2.8% moved to a nursing home, a figure
that is particularly impressive considering that the average age of tenants is 80 years old.
We are very proud that we enable so many of our tenants to live out their lives at JCHE.
It is a cost-effective approach to the housing needs of older adults. And, it offers benefits
that are invaluable. JCHE’s supportive housing enables older adults to remain in control
of their lives.
In the subsequent pages, you will meet Charles, Betty, and Dzhudit, as well as others who
live at JCHE. Their stories are inspirational. Although their reasons for moving to JCHE
may differ – affordability of the housing; access to supportive services; opportunity to be
part of a vital community – they share a desire to approach life as a participant rather than
an observer. These remarkable individuals in their 80s and 90s feel safe and comfortable at
JCHE. Without the concerns of escalating rents and broken faucets, JCHE tenants can
continue to cultivate friendships, enjoy favorite activities while discovering new interests,
and contribute their time to improving the lives of others.
At JCHE, seniors are able to live as we would all choose – independently and with dignity.
This is all possible because of the generosity and concern of our wide circle of friends and
supporters. You assume a most critical role. Without you, JCHE would still exist. We
would continue to offer affordable, well-maintained senior housing. But your contributions
make it possible to offer tenants the heart and soul of JCHE: the programs and services that
allow tenants to retain their independence, engage in a vibrant community, and age well
at home. As always, our tenants express it most eloquently. Recently, one described her
favorite JCHE program – tutoring elementary students in an urban school – as “the reason
to get up in the morning.” On behalf of all the seniors who live at JCHE, thank you for
providing the resources that offer that fundamental incentive daily.
With warm regards,
Paul Rosenberg, Chairperson

Charles Chasson
When Charles moved to
Golda Meir House from out of state,
he and his son had the chance to get to
know one another again.
Charles
Charles Chasson (left) with his son, Andrew.
What began as an occasional computer lesson has become a cherished onging father/son connection.
When Charles Chasson first moved to Golda Meir House in 2005, his son Andrew helped him become acclimated.
When Andrew came to visit, the two spent time together in Golda’s Computer Center for conversation and
computer tips. It was an excellent setting for Andrew to help Charles feel comfortable on the Internet and in his
new surroundings. The Center is often a hubbub of activity and soon both Charles and Andrew were drawn into
its community. It didn’t take long before Andrew signed on as a weekly volunteer, and he and his dad were
sharing regular time together.
Nearly five years later, these Computer Center visits continue to offer more than hints about avoiding Internet
spam. “This has given me a way to participate directly in my dad’s life,” says Andrew. Charles shares these
appreciative sentiments. He was often traveling for business when his children were young. “In the last few
years, I’ve gotten to know my son. We have a really good and loving relationship.”
These valued interactions with Andrew – as well as those with other family members – are a wonderful
complement to the independent life that Charles has established at Golda. He participates in many learning
opportunities and regularly volunteers in the building. He is responsible for one of Golda’s most popular and
intellectually challenging activities, a current events discussion, for which he prepares tirelessly (including
online research in the Computer Center!).
Living at Golda Meir House has been a positive experience for Charles, and his family enthusiastically agrees.
According to Andrew, “By having my dad close by at Golda, we’ve had a second chance to get to know
one another.”

Dzhudit
Dzhudit Grin is 92 years old. She insists
that she is unremarkable despite the fact that
at age 73, she left everything familiar and
moved from Russia to the United States. She
arrived with few belongings and minimal
knowledge of English. After moving to
JCHE’s Leventhal House, she started taking
English classes in the building. “Many come
here and don’t want to be part of the culture
or learn the language,” she explains. “I want
to understand everything.”
When Dzhudit had surgery to insert a
pacemaker, her doctor wanted her to go to a
rehabilitation facility for a few weeks. She
was adamant that she wanted to return to
her JCHE apartment. “I want to rehab in
my own bed,” she told him. And with the
support of JCHE’s CaringChoices services,
she was able to do so successfully.

program makes it possible
for Dzhudit to manage her
life at Leventhal House.

Dzhudit views the CaringChoices program
as a lifeline. While it was initially difficult
to accept assistance, she now knows that it
enables her to manage successfully in
independent housing. In addition to
supplying essential help in her apartment,
the program provides escort assistance to
medical appointments. The medical escorts
are fellow tenants in the Brighton buildings
who are employed by JCHE to provide these
important services. Dzhudit had an urgent
need for an escort several months ago when
her eyesight completely failed. Without a
competent and reliable escort, she would
have been unable to get the medical care that
ultimately restored the vision in one eye.
Dzhudit feels enormously grateful for the
support she receives. Had she stayed in
St. Petersburg, her life would have been
very different and very difficult. She is
pleased to be part of a “wonderful nation
that understands that older people need
some help.”
Marilyn Berger
and Arlene Rosenfield
At Coleman House, it was
Barney – a 13 year old dog –
who first brought Marilyn
and Arlene together.
Marilyn and Arlene
Marilyn (left) and Arlene (right) enjoying time with Barney.
It was Barney who first brought them together. Barney, a 13 year old Shih-tzu dog, lives happily at JCHE’s
Coleman House with his owner Arlene Rosenfield. When Marilyn Berger, another Coleman tenant, met
Barney, she liked him so much, she wanted to meet Arlene. A cherished friendship has formed between the
two women. And Barney enjoys constant attention from both Arlene and his ‘auntie’ Marilyn.
Marilyn and Arlene have each lived at Coleman House for about 10 years. Marilyn, 81, had put herself on
the Coleman waiting list because it had been home to her beloved mother-in-law. “I have many wonderful
memories of spending time here with her,” she says. Arlene, 75, moved from a Brookline apartment that
didn’t offer on-site staff or supportive services. “I knew I wanted a safer environment.” Besides, her
previous apartment did not allow dogs, and Arlene knew she would be happiest if she had a dog.
The women watch out for one another. Because her mobility is limited, Arlene welcomes Marilyn’s offer
to walk Barney twice a day. Marilyn’s children recently asked her to give up driving – which she readily
agreed to do – so she is appreciative of Arlene’s willingness to drive her to the store. In addition to sharing
their love for Barney, the women share a life perspective.
Marilyn and Arlene each have close relationships with their respective children, but thrive on their
independence. “My kids offered to create an in-law suite for me, and I said ‘no way,’” states Marilyn.
“Living at Coleman House lets me feel good about myself.” Arlene concurs. “It’s so important to
have your own life.”

Betty Rosenzweig
The community at Golda Meir
House has everything that Betty
was seeking: learning opportunities,
diversity and interesting people to meet.
Betty Rosenzweig with 5th grade pen pals, Shakeem and Val.
Betty
Betty Rosenzweig, age 81, moved to Golda from New York in search of good housing near her Newtonbased family. She found the security she was seeking along with a limitless number of interesting people
to meet and activities to explore. “I’m really attracted to the diversity here. It is such a rich and
engaging environment,” she notes.
Betty has been particularly drawn to Golda’s learning opportunities. She is taking a class to learn
Russian. “There are many Russian tenants here at Golda and I would like to talk with them in their
language.” The experience has given her a fresh perspective on how those from the former Soviet Union
feel as they struggle to learn English. It is a challenge, but Betty is persevering. She carries homemade
flash cards in her pocket so that she can frequently test her vocabulary skills.
She is also interested in helping others learn. Recently, Betty participated in a JCHE’s Generations
Together program to help children improve their writing ability. It was a pen pal program that matched
Golda tenants with Boston elementary school students. Betty exchanged letters monthly with 11-yearold Shakeem. She speaks with pride about the poem he wrote called “The New Kid.” It was a perfect
jumping off point to bridge the 70 years between the two. She told him about her own experience
arriving at Golda as “the new kid.” As she describes, “It wasn’t easy but I made new friends and I am
very happy here. And now I have a wonderful new friend and my very first pen pal Shakeem. I feel
incredibly lucky.”

David
David Shonfield’s life was on a steady track.
After serving in World War II, he married Rita,
the love of his life, and they had two daughters.
What started as a temporary stint in a lighting
company back in his 20s became his place of
employment for over four decades. For years,
the Shonfields enjoyed their life as renters in a
Brookline two-family house.
Then, their luck began to turn. Rita’s health
started to fail. His employer sold the company,
leaving David jobless. The Shonfields were
uprooted from their apartment when their
landlord put it on the market. They moved in
with their daughter for two years. “I always
thought I was so secure, but I discovered there’s
no such thing,” reflects David. Even as he faced
these unsettling situations, David maintained
good humor and a sense of balance.
They solved their housing dilemma in 1994
with a move to JCHE’s Genesis House. They
enjoyed several good years together until
Rita’s illness progressed. Sadly, in 2003, she
was unable to rebound. David was able to
make the transition to life alone largely
because he was already well settled at JCHE.
Today, at 86, David continues to approach his
days with levity and evenness. A self-described
preacher, he shares wisdom about enjoying
life’s little but essential components. Life at
JCHE is good. He participates in a current
events group. He caringly checks in on JCHE
staff and always brings them treats for Purim.
His apartment is conveniently near his shul,
his brothers, and his daughters. Frequently,
he buys a bouquet of flowers for his dining
table. “Rita loved flowers. They were a small
thing that made her happy.” They are a lovely
reminder of their years together.
With so many exercise opportunities at JCHE,
it’s convenient for David to keep fit.
David Shonfield
A move to JCHE’s Genesis
House made it possible for
David and his wife to have
their own space after living
with their daughter for two
years.

Gert Cohen
Gert has lived at
Coleman House for
23 years. “I highly
recommend it!”
Gert Cohen (right) with caregiver Tanya.
Gert
On Gert Cohen’s next birthday, she will be 100. As one of Coleman House’s original tenants –
since 1986 – Gert is truly a JCHE matriarch. For years, she actively participated in the building
and in the community. She started the Coleman House social club, organizing parties and
cultural events. She enjoyed Coleman’s proximity to the Jewish Community Center and held
leadership positions there. In her 60s, before she came to JCHE, Gert fulfilled a lifelong dream
by enrolling at Curry College. In addition, longing to see the country, she attended Elder Hostel
programs at 15 different college campuses.
In the last few years, Gert has slowed down. After taking several falls, she now has a full-time
caregiver. Tanya, who has assisted her for five years, caringly refers to her as ‘my Mrs. Gertrude.’
Gert’s attentive daughters understand and agree with their mother’s desire to remain in her
comfortable Coleman apartment. “I’ve been in rehab hospitals and that’s not where I want
to be,” states Gert.
For Gert, slowing down does not mean tuning out. She reads the Boston Globe thoroughly each
day. At age 99, her overall health is as remarkable as her memory. She takes no medications.
Her restriction-free diet means she can still enjoy herring or hotdogs for lunch and more than an
occasional vodka. Her family knows how to throw a party to Gert’s liking!
Gert has enjoyed a full life – and JCHE’s Coleman House has been a significant part for over
23 years.
