The word “Periplus” stems from
Greek, meaning ‘journey’ and also
means a circumnavigation or sea
voyage around a coastline. The use
of a Periplus, or journal, dates back
to the second century AD and was a
document listing in order, the ports
and coastal landmarks. In that
sense, the Periplus was a type of log
similar to the modern day ship’s log.

John Praiswater - Commodore
The past couple of months The Association of Southern California Yacht Club’s
Opening Days have been in full swing. The Ventura and Channel Island Yacht Clubs were on
the weekend of April second and third. Mary and I attended all but one and had a great time
meeting new friends and visiting with some old ones. Of course our club was the best. I had a
fun time and didn’t make too many mistakes. I want again to thank Kathy Smith, her helper
Susan Peck, and everyone that participated and helped make it a big success.
On the 30th of April PCYC hosted the annual McCune Memorial Race. This race kicks
off the first of a three race high point series. The McCune Race was established to honor the
memory of PCYC member Dick McCune. I will let you know the outcome of this race in next
month’s article.
The Ladies Who Do Lunch presented our club with a wonderful umbrella to complement our new upstairs
patio seating area. Thanks again to the LWDL.
PCYC has agreed to reciprocate with Las Posas Country Club as of April 1st. Our members are welcome to
use their restaurant and bar facilities and they in turn are welcome to use ours. So please feel free to take advantage
of this offer.
Many of our newer members may be unaware that our club has a lending library. It is located in the hallway
across from the gear locker. There are a number of fine books that are provided by our members, so take advantage
of this for your summer reading. Also you may want to donate some of your old books.
And lastly, don’t forget the Commodore’s Ball Saturday May 21. It’s the day after our second quarterly meeting. So mark your calendars for both of these club events. Get your reservations in early, it’s going to be a fun time.
See you around the Club,
John

Vice Commodore’s Report
I really don’t look forward to dressing up in a white shirt, club tie, white pants, white belt, white
sox, white shoes, blue blazer and a white straw hat. If you ever see me shopping at Home Depot
wearing this outfit, please call somebody – quickly! However, the more Southern California
Yachting Association Opening Day ceremonies we attend, this little personal inconvenience
makes more sense. At these ceremonies we meet hundreds of happy people similarly attired. It
is just part of the tradition that makes yacht clubs unique compared to other organizations.
There is practicality to the uniform. If you see people only once or twice a year and they are wearing name badges,
club insignia, perhaps indication of what they are presently assigned to do and a bullion suggesting what type of
vessel they might own, you can jump right back into a conversation that had long passed into the ether. The big
thing is that even though we may be competitors on the water, we belong to a tradition that has existed for hundreds
of years. Wearing a yacht club uniform does not make you look like a snob. A genuine snob would not be caught
dead wearing such attire. You just look like you belong to something special.
What I am leading up to is making a very early pitch for a little more participation at our annual Opening Day
Ceremony. This event is for all club members, not just those who have to sit like ducks in a row on the dock. You
certainly may wear whatever you want, but the more members we have in at least part of the “uniform of the day”
makes it more welcoming to our guests from other clubs who really enjoy coming here. It actually is fun.
See you at the club, no matter what you are wearing. Please don’t take that literally.

Jerry Kaufman - Rear Commodore
Rear Commodore’s Report
As members of a full-service club, we look to enjoying the wide array of services and
events that our Club has to offer. We are not expected to spend much time thinking
about the “back office” functions of our Club. However, with the tax and auditing
season in full swing, I could not help but reflect on the breadth of issues that we ask
our accounting staff to handle. To begin, Controller Pam Vinovich and her great team
of Leslie Cortez and Roman Evgrafov are in charge of two sets of books for two
entirely different types of entities:
(1) The Pacific Corinthian Marina is a Limited Partnership. As such, our Accounting Department must
contend with shareholder issues, slip rentals, capital reserves for dock improvement, dividend
accounting, landlord office leasing, and formal audits. PCYC is the General Partner of the Pacific
Corinthian Marina and owns 38.5% of the entity.
(2) The other set of books managed by our Accounting Department is, of course, our Yacht Club, a
mutual benefit non -profit California Corporation. Our CPA firm is engaged separately from the
Marina to review the results of our Club. To keep the Club afloat and to best serve its members, there
are a myriad of sub-businesses and operating issues that require separate/unique accounting. For
example, there is private club accounting, which includes running a restaurant and a bar. Add to that,
the Club accounts separately for each of the events that are arranged for the members, some of which
are restaurant/bar related and some are not. For example, boating events are accounted for separately.
The Foundation is accounted for separately. Gear Locker accounting is akin to a mini-department
store. In addition, we have non-member events to help cover the large overhead of a full-service Club.
These events are both taxable and should be profitable. They require detailed recordkeeping, apart
from the non-profit accounting of the Club.
We ask of Pam and her team to expertly track the results of each activity and to combine them into
meaningful financial reports. I marvel at the breadth of knowledge that is required to handle all of
this. Being both accounting and computer savvy is important. Fortunately, our Accounting Team is
up to the tasks. Thanks guys!
NOTICE AND CALL FOR THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE
Those regular club members who wish to serve on the Nominating Committee to
screen the candidates for club officers and board of director members for 2017
should notify the front desk. There will be a brief application to complete.

IN GENERAL - Brenda Dickmann
Spring is here, the pool is heated, and we are waiting for you!
The swimming pool is now nicely heated to 87 degrees. Please come and enjoy the beautiful pool
area, and remember you may have food and drink service while relaxing poolside. Call the Front
Desk if you wish to reserve your Kayak or Paddleboards. Reservations begin at 10:00 am each day
the club is open. Bring your life jacket or use one of the club’s and enjoy the serenity of our beautiful harbor.
I would like to bring to your attention a recent problem the club is experiencing - cigarettes in the planters located all
around the club house. The planters all have mulch and bark, and can be combustible with burning embers. Please use
the ash trays provided. If you do not see one, please ask. I thank you in advance for helping to eliminate the potential
for fires.
Another issue which has been brought to my attention is guests and members parking in the
Staff Commodore parking spaces. There are seven parking spaces reserved for Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear
Commodore, and four Staff Commodore spaces. If you cannot find a place to park come into the club and I am willing
to move my car if need be. Let’s please keep those spaces free.
Happy Mother’s Day! It is just around the corner. If you haven’t been to our brunch, you don’t know what you are
missing. We seriously have the best Champagne brunch around. Please call the front desk for reservations.
Just a reminder on the importance of making advance reservation: it is very important for staffing purposes in the Dining Room, Bar and the Kitchen. Without reservations it is very difficult to gauge just how much food to prepare; hence,
waste and added costs result.
Our lines are always open, Wednesday through Sunday, for your event reservations. Please take note that when booking reservations for persons other than yourself, we greatly appreciate their member number and food choice. Also, in
order to make the event as enjoyable as possible, we recommend special orders be made at least a week in advance. For
clarity and communication purposes, it is best to remember who took your reservations.

COASTAL KNOWLEDGE Captain Dave Willhite
Hello boaters and waterfront lovers,
WEATHER
Our weather is giving the signal that our El Nino peak has passed. Water temps are
close to normal and the winds are steady from the northwest. Currents along our
coast are also showing signs of being normal. The only real change is in the ground
swells, which have been higher than usual but are steady also from the northwest.
This is a strong indicator that while our northwest front has been strong and, more
often than not, we have had almost no south to southeast storms. This could change
but it is my feelings that we will lean towards a more normal weather pattern offshore this year.
FISHING
Our fishing has also pointed towards a tapering off of El Nino signs. Looking at the water temps and talking with
fishing captains, I believe that we may have to work harder to catch fish or fish the local species than we did prior
to El Nino.
There has been some good reports of nice 20 to 50 pound halibut being caught on the south side of Santa Cruz
Island. The fish are being caught in 50 to 120 feet of water. Most are being caught on small mackerel and sardines.
The nice part about fishing the lee of the island is the flat seas. When one stands holding a fishing rod and reel for
three or four hours, it is a lot nicer not having to hang on to a rail to stand up straight. Also the water temps in the
lee can be 1 to 2 degrees warmer, which sure makes a difference in a fish’s feeding cycle. Warmer the water the
more a fish’s spawning cycle advances, which requires more protein - food.
Halibut tend to pair up or, in early spring, school up in sandy bottom areas along kelp beds and rocky
structure. They are hunters and will lie close to these structures to ambush their prey. Also the Calico Bass are
most active in the warmer water. I used to fish almost exclusively for Calico Bass from my charter boats where
temps were the most important condition needed. Both halibut and Calico Bass like 60 degrees and up. At the time
of the writing, temps are in the mid to high 50s.
I'm thinking about giving a couple of seminars this spring on fishing. If you need some help outfitting your boat to
fish please call me for an on-board meeting. This service is complementary to PCYC members. Please call me
805-218-8004 or e-mail me at [email protected].
Good Fishing!
YACHTS
The market is staying strong. The lack of late models is taking toll. The 5-year recession no-build era has limited
newer inventories. I'm still seeing a few newer boats arriving that are not designed for our local sea conditions. If
you are considering boating in our local waters, you may want to find a seasoned boat captain and yacht broker
who can match you, not only your budget and use, but to a boat that is seaworthy.
