VIVIAN-ANNE GITTENS
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER/PUBLISHER, NATION GROUP, RETIRES
Simply
Vivian-Anne!
22 Years of Shaping
the Nation Group
On Friday, November 20th 2015, at
an understated elegant restaurant,
befitting of the lady herself, provided
the setting for an intimate gathering
to honour Mrs. Vivian-Anne Gittens.
It was an evening filled with nostalgia
as attendees reflected on the more
than 22 years the Chief Executive
Officer of Nation Corporation, and
Publisher and Chief Executive Officer
of the Nation Publishing Company
Limited devoted to the media house.
A Certified Management Accountant and a
trained Financial Management Consultant,
Mrs. Gittens has worked as a Management
Consultant locally and regionally, and as
a Project and Investment Analyst with
development agencies in the region. She
joined the Nation Publishing Co. Limited
in 1993 as its Chief Financial Officer and
according to Marilyn Gittens, Manager of
Technology Training and Special Projects,
longest standing employee at the Nation
Publishing with 40 plus years under her
belt, would bring about pivotal changes in
the organization. “When Anne came she
shaped The Nation, she was instrumental
in putting stringent measures in place for
the financial security of the company.”
Wilfred Fields, former Head of Advertising
for Nation Publishing, recalls that from the
beginning Mrs. Gittens was “pleasant and
frank”. If you were wrong she would say,
she is a serious woman so she didn’t stand
for anyone breaking the rules. Very by the
book especially when it came to numbers,
but caring, anyone would tell you that
about Anne, she cared about the staff.”
It is a sentiment echoed by current Head of
Advertising, Paulette Jones, who spoke on
behalf of the senior management team at
the dinner. In her speech Ms. Jones noted,
“(Vivian-Anne’s) love of family, community
and the importance of truly mentoring
those we supervise are but a few of the
many lessons that will stay with us forever.
(Her) legacy will certainly include (her)
commitment to people development.”
Mrs. Gittens was elevated to Vice President
in 1999 and was appointed Publisher
and CEO of Nation Publishing on the
retirement of Founder/Director, Harold
Hoyte, in 2007. She has been a member
of several boards, serving as chair for
PAGE 2 | SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2015
many of them and in 2008, she became
the Nation Group CEO. It was not, by any
means, an easy journey but was certainly
a fruitful one according to Ms. Jones. “You
led us at a time that was easily the most
challenging, one year into becoming a
public company, shrinking markets, stiff
competition for both news and advertising
and the disruption or distraction of new
media. We could not have asked for a
better leader through these times. We all
grew under your direction. You ensured
that we, and I quote “brought our brains
to the table”.”
Speeches were also delivered by the
OCM Chairman, Sir Fred Gollop, Group
CEO Dawn Thomas, CEO designate of
Nation Publishing, Anthony Shaw, Nation
Corporation’s Chief Financial Officer, Noel
Wood, and Director of Nation Publishing
and former Advertising Manager Wilfred
Field. Mrs. Gittens was also honored with
a poem written and delivered by Nation
Publishing’s Head of Marketing and
Communications, Valerie Hope.
In response to the evening’s many
accolades, Mrs. Gittens gave a moving
speech in which she acknowledged the
Kind, considerate, big
hearted and true, a beacon of
professionalism, through
and through
From engineer to accountant to CEO
She pushed down walls
and changed the status quo
Known to follow the beat of her
own distinctive drum
She led with passion, commitment and
most definitely, wisdom
Never afraid to tread where
others would not
She was steadfast,
always humble, and focused on task
Mrs. Gittens as she delivered her moving speech at her retirement function
At times when the journey was turbulent
and difficult to navigate
She captained with vigour, never
accepting defeat
Demanding the best of others,
she was tasked to lead
Displaying an indomitable spirit, to say
the least
She’s has built an admirable legacy,
genuinely unique
As the sun sets on her media and
publishing career
For sure other life paths will
illuminate both far and near
Grandmother, traveller, consultant,
dear friend
Vivian-Anne Gittens, Simply blessed,
simply brilliant, simply inspiring!

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS
On 25th October 2015, at the Nelson Mandela Park, St. Clair, Port of
Spain our team from OCM was challenged to a much anticipated
football match by Gurdian Media Limited. All decked in red, the
OCM team proved to be too much for our competitors as we won
the match by one goal to nil.
20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EXPRESS CHILDREN’S FUND
We are certainly the champions!
The 20th Anniversary of the Express
Children’s Fund held in the Ballroom
of the Hilton Trinidad and Conference
Centre, on Saturday 17th October
2015 was a huge success. The annual
charity event, with the theme “Black
and White Ball” saw many patrons
thoroughly enjoying themselves to
the sounds of DJ Franco and Imij and
Company. Here are a few pictures
taken at the event.
“Building our nation through education”
is the motto of the Express Children’s
Fund (ECF) and, since its inception in
1989, hundreds of children of primary
and secondary school age have benefited
from the fund in some way.
It has been a source of relief to children in
need and has eased the burden on parents
through the provision of books, uniforms,
transportation and other educational
necessities.
But in recent years the fund has morphed
into much more, becoming a ray of hope
for children requiring a range of medical
procedures.
ECF director Karlene Ng Tang, who spoke
at the Express Children’s Fund’s 20th
annual dinner and dance held on Saturday
night at Hilton Trinidad, St Ann’s, noted
that the number of requests for assistance
with medical expenses has been steadily
increasing over the last few years.
Most of these requests were granted, she
said, and the fund has been able to provide
assistance for children in need of both
minor and major medical procedures.
Our Guests certainly had a
wonderful time at the Dinner
The ECF Directors as they stick the cake in commemoration of the

to focus on the Christmas Season. In keeping with its Corporate
Social Responsibility mandate, the station embarked on its first
ever Toy and Food Drive in a collaborative effort with the Red

Since then the Toy and Food Drive has
become a staple on the calendar of events
of The Wave Radio Station. The twomonth long venture, which commences
in November with outreach programmes
to radio listeners and local businesses and
concludes in December with the delivery
of food hampers/baskets to needy families

with an estimated 150 families reached
each year, from communities around Saint

concerted effort to reach out to homeless

Whilst the collaborative effort with

successful, the station strongly believed
that a more personal touch was needed.
Hence, the idea to have its staff personally
deliver the “goodies” and interact with
these families and people whom they had
