Art Trail a Success
On Tuesday morning, year three and four children shared their inquiry learning
with friends and family through an Arts Trail. Over the past two months year
three and four classes have been investigating belonging and how they can
share the cultural diversity at Campbells Bay School through the arts.
Some highlights of the day included recreations of Ekeko, the Tiwanakan (pre
Columbian civilization) god of abundance and prosperity. Students saw a
display of Ekeko at the Auckland Art Gallery at the Space to Dream exhibition
and Rooms 20, 21, 10 and 13 were inspired to create their own Campbells Bay
School Ekeko in their classrooms – see photos, below.
Rooms 21, 22 and 14 explored belonging and culture through dance and
recreated the Chinese dragon dance. Room 14 had a very creative idea and
took the concept of the Chinese dragon dance but made a large Kiwi head a
body and choreographed their own Kiwi dance.
Every class produced outstanding presentations and art pieces. The opportunity
for students to share their learning with an audience is invaluable and we thank
all the parents and whanau who were able to make it to the Art Trail.
WELCOME

27 June 2016
Mathlete of the Week
Congratulations to William Jun from Year 6 Blue.
You are the Mathlete of the Week!
The Mathlete of the Week is the top student in the school who
has mastered the most concepts in Mathletics.
Library Books
Please could you ensure your children return any overdue library books before
the end of term.
This would be a good opportunity to get some books for holiday reading too.
Jammies in June (and July)
Jammies keep little chests toasty
during chilly winter nights. About 320
children are admitted to Kidz First
Hospital in January, but that
increases to more than 700 in August.
Kids that are warm at night are less
likely to fall sick and admitted to
hospital due to preventable illnesses
such as Acute Rheumatic Fever, a
disease usually only found in third
world countries but prevalent in
Counties Manukau.
How can we help? Before Wednesday 6 July, please bring along to school new
flannelette children’s pyjamas. These will then be donated to Middlemore
Foundation to help keep children warm.
MAPATHON 2016
Muddy Clothes
As the wet weather continues,
please remember to put a spare
set of school uniform in your
child’s bag. The office has
limited spares they can change
children in to if they happen to
slip in the mud!
Term Two Dates
Please note the school is closed
on the following date this term:
Friday 8 July: Teacher Only
Day.
We are having a professional
development day at CBS with
staff from Milford School and
Mairangi Bay School also
attending.
Please note we will still be
working the required number of
school days this year! It just
means we work a little longer in
December. Hence, the term
finishes for students
on Thursday 7 July.
Absences
If your child is going to be absent
please let the school office know
either by emailing
safetycheck@campbellsbay. school.nz
or by using the Tiqbiz app.
Term Three marks the start of our annual school fundraiser - the Factathon, this
year has a geography theme and is appropriately called the Mapathon.
This is a Friends of CBS fundraiser that has the potential to bring in over
$20,000 for the school. This year the money will go directly to funding the
school’s hall refurbishment. If every child raises only $25.00 we will exceed our
target this year.
On the first day back of next term expect to receive three notices 1. Mapathon instructions
2. Sponsorship recording form
3. Your child’s questions
For extended holidays please
email John McGowan for approval
on:
[email protected]
[email protected]
This is a Ministry of Education
requirement.
Please do not just email class
teachers.
Given the time of year, it is really
important to let the office know if
your child is going to be absent.
Given the size of the school it is
very time consuming to phone
each parent who has forgotten!

With our year five and six musical production scheduled for performances from 15 - 18
August (inclusive) we can offer members of our community sponsorship opportunities

ticket sales does not cover the costs of staging the show we are always looking for ways
people can help us! If you are interested, please read on.
We offer non-exclusive sponsorship opportunities at $250 per sponsor. This will provide all sponsors with an
acknowledgement in the show programme and two free tickets to the performance on the evening of their choice. For
further information please contact Karen McNair: [email protected]
Please note that all sponsorship arrangements must be finalised by 4 July, as this is when the programme is required by
the printer.

Travelwise Message
‘Help us reduce the car congestion in the CBS bus bay’ say Freya, Neviah, Cerys,
Matt and Max, our Travelwise Reps.
Give Mr McGowan a rest, drop your children in Beach Road, the ends of Aberdeen Road,
Rae Road and East Coast Bays Road.
Encourage your children to drop and walk, walk, use the WSB, scooter, bus or bike to
CBS.
It’s cool to be Travelwise!
The bus bay will be closed to cars on Thursday 7 July.
No cars in the bus bay on the last day of the term.
Hardy Souls Go Planting!
Thanks to guidance from the Centennial Park Bush Society and members of our school
community much planting took place on Wednesday afternoon in our Community Forest.
In spite of torrential rain until just before planting commenced after school, the volunteers
were undeterred and did a superb job helping our forest continue to develop.
The forest is unique. There are very few schools fortunate enough to have such a
wonderfully large area where native plants are flourishing in an urban environment.
In the near future a group of year six students will start a monitoring programme to determine the extent of invasive pests
in the forest so a plan can be constructed to reduce their presence, thereby helping both flora and fauna. Thanks to
Nathan Janes and the year six inquiry team.
Richard Hursthouse (Bush Society) and
Jenny Hunter (CBS forest champion)
at the planting afternoon.
Further to the item on the planting in the forest this week.
But wait, there is more! Bush Society members will meet at the bottom entrance to the forest (on the Peter Terrace school pathway) at 8.30am this Wednesday, to continue with the planting programme. You are very welcome to help this
hardy band of community minded people (Not Self But Service) with this important task. As it is muddy underfoot this is
not suitable for children but it is just fine for those with gum boots (Wellingtons to some!) who come along with a spade in
their hand and a song in their heart! More the better to show our support to the Bush Society.

Tournament of Minds
On Saturday 25 June a group of year five and six CBS students went to a Tournament of Minds workshop. TOM is a
problem solving competition between teams of seven kids from schools around New Zealand and Australia. Problems
can be in language/literature, social sciences, science/technology and engineering/mathematics. The workshop was held
at Albany Junior High School and was to help us to learn about having a creative mind, working as a team and presenting
ideas.
Please take the time to click on the links below to read the reflections of
two of our talented TOM students.
