True Torah Tales
With Mrs. Noah
#57 - Sh’mot (Exodus) 15:19 - 16:24
Join Mrs. Noah, Hannah, and many of their
friends as they use their imaginations to explore the Torah
and the awesome stories and lessons waiting
to be found there.
Part 1
Edge of the Yam Soof
Thank
you for
your
support
of Mrs.
Noah
and her
TORAH
stories!
Don’t
forget –
this
story is
for all
ages!
Max was climbing on the rocks, looking at the remnants of Pharaoh’s army
floating in the water – when he slipped. Hannah watched in horror as
he disappeared into the swirling waters. She couldn’t see him at all!
“Max!” Hannah shouted.
Hannah ran to the edge of the water and began searching frantically. Finally,
she saw a hand clinging to a wooden wheel from one of the chariots!
She quickly looked for Dodi or
Mrs. Noah. Mrs. Noah was
helping some mothers
with the children, and
Dodi was gathering wood
for a fire. Hannah
jumped up and
waved her hands.
“Dodi!” Hannah
cried. “Help!”
Dodi rushed over and saw Max clinging to the wheel. He jumped into the water
and pulled Max up onto the spokes. “Hold on!” he cried as a big wave
came right for them. The wave picked up the wheel and threw it right up on the
sand!

Mrs. Noah saw the wheel in the air, grabbed a blanket, and ran to help. Max was
wet and cold. Dodi got some wood and built a fire. They all gathered around to
get warm while Dodi and Max dried off.
They listened as the people began to sing a song of praise to YHWH. The song
recounted all the things that they had seen the God of Avraham, Yitz’chak and
Ya’acov do. (Read the song they sang – Ex. 15.)
“Let’s go, Mrs. Noah!” Max said. “I’m ready for a cup of hot chocolate.”
“We can read the rest of the story there,” Hannah agreed.
Max smiled. “Bye, Dodi. I’ll be back!”
Part 2
Mrs. Noah’s
The fireplace was warm and friendly. After walking
across the Yam Soof, then getting soaked
in the water – something hot to drink
was really good. Many of Mrs. Noah’s
animals were waiting for her to
read them the story.
“Now,” Mrs. Noah said, as she
opened up the Bible to read the
rest of the story. “What did you
learn sitting by the wall of water?”
“I thought about all the bad things
in the world – things that hurt us:
bad people, accidents, germs,
poison, fire – ALL kinds of things!”
Max told them. “Then I looked
at all the bad fish, sharks, and
scary stuff in the water. But, the
Ruach held back the water so nothing
could hurt us. YAH promises to ‘hold back’ the bad things – and bless us.”
“Yes. But, do you know what we are supposed to do BEFORE He can give
us those blessings?” Hannah asked.

“You mean we still have to do something?” Max seemed surprised.
“Duh. Max, you have been reading all the stories about the covenants
YHWH has made with Avraham, Yitz’chak, and Ya’acov. He had a plan for
this family the whole time?” Hannah exclaimed.
“That’s right,” Moogy said. “YHWH has planned everything – right from the
beginning.”
Mrs. Noah stopped the chatter. “OK, let’s get back to the story.”
“What happened to them after they crossed the Yam Soof? Did they follow
Moshe with no more complaining?” Max asked.
“I’m afraid not,” Mrs. Noah replied.
“No, the journey for the next 40
days through the wilderness, on
their way to Mount Sinai, was
hard. After 3 days they ran out of
water. When they finally found
some, it was very bitter. SO, they
grumbled against Moshe.”
“Did they pray and ask Yah for
some water?” Max asked.
“No, but Moshe did,” Miss B said.
“Hmmm,” Moogy mumbled. “Yah
told him to throw a piece of wood
into the water.”
“Eweeh!” Max uttered as he
scrunched up his face. “That would be ICKY.”
Mrs. Noah laughed. “No, Max. The bitter water became sweet. Kind of like
bad people becoming good, when they add Torah to their hearts.”
“It looks like they finally came to a place with lots of good water,” Moogy told
them as he read more of the story.

“So, they finally must have been happy,” Max suggested.
“No way. They must have found something to be unhappy about,” Hannah
said, as she got some more hot cocoa.
“You’re right, Hannah,” Miss B said. “They were worried about food. They
griped and grumbled against Moshe – AGAIN.”
“That’s right. So YHWH told Moshe He would rain food right out of heaven,”
Mrs. Noah added.
“Let’s go see!” Max said to Hannah. “Food raining out of heaven? That
sounds SOOOO cool.”
Hannah smiled. It did sound kinda cool. She sipped the last of her cocoa –
and off they went.
Part 3
In The Wilderness
Hannah looked around. Where was Dodi? People were gathered around in
groups, talking. Some looked angry, some looked sad. Then, Hannah heard
someone shout out to Moshe, “We should have stayed in Egypt. At least there
we had lots of food – all we wanted!”
“You’re going to starve ALL of us!” the
people yelled.
Just then they saw Dodi running toward them.
As he got closer, he shouted out to them.
“I heard The Eternal One tell Moshe he
was going to rain down bread from
heaven for us!”
“RAIN bread? WOW! I wanna see,” Max cried out.
“It’s a TEST!” Dodi gasped as he dropped on the ground next to Max.
“The Eternal One is testing them to see if they will follow His instructions.”
“Test them?” Hannah wondered. “How is He going to test them?”
“The people are grumbling because we have no meat,” Dodi said. “So,

YHWH is going to send us food. Meat in the evening and bread in the
morning.”
“I remember! The bread-like food was called ‘manna’,” Hannah exclaimed.
“Yes. Manna means ‘what is it’ – because they didn’t know what it was,”
Max said.
“The Eternal One instructed Moshe to tell us to go out each day and collect
enough of the manna for only one day. However, on the 6th day, we are to
collect enough for 2 days,” Max explained.
Max looked up into the sky. “It’s getting dark.”
“Look!” Hannah shouted. “Is that a bunch of birds flying toward us?”
“Yeah! Quail. There are thousands of them – and they are coming down all
over the camp!” Dodi exclaimed.
As they watched, thousands of quail covered the camp. There was plenty of food
for everyone. There was a night of eating, singing and dancing as they all ate.
The next morning, Hannah noticed there was a dew all over the camp. When the
dew lifted, thin flakes – like frost on the ground –
appeared on the desert floor.
“What is it?” Max asked.
“This is the manna,” she explained as
she picked up a piece and tasted it.
“Hmmm. It tastes a little like honey.”
Max grabbed his backpack and began
gathering the manna. “I’m going to get
a bunch! We can take some back to
Mrs. Noah and the gang. We’ll have
enough for a LONG TIME,” he said, as he stuffed the pack.
“But wait, Max ... you can’t ...” Hannah started to say. But Max was off
gathering LOTS of manna. Hannah shook her head. “Oh, no. He didn’t listen!”

Counting the Omer
Did you now that an “omer” is a measured portion? A “sheaf” is a portion, too.
Each day, for 50 days, the ancient Rabbi’s would bring “SHEAVES” of grain to offer
to YHWH. They would begin with 1 then increase it each day. Do you know what
day we are on? I hope you are using the chart I made for you!
