Martin Luther described the Bible
this way: “Here you will find the swaddling cloths and manger in which
Christ lies, and to which the angel
points the shepherds. Simple and lowly
are these swaddling cloths, but dear is
the treasure, Christ, who lies in them.”
In our congregation’s Constitution,
we say this, about the Bible: “This
congregation accepts the canonical
Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God and
the authoritative source and norm of its
proclamation, faith, and life.”
In our lives, we read the Bible for
devotion, for guidance, for information, for study, for confirmation
class homework, for fun, for literature, for discernment, for spiritual
practice… and, of course, we read
from the Bible every time we gather
together for worship.
Have you seen any of the previews
for the new History Channel program, entitled: The Bible? It is a ten
hour mini-series based upon the stories
of the Bible. This mini-series is a collaborative work by Mark Burnett (the
executive producer of Survivor, The
Voice, The Apprentice, and Shark Tank)
and his wife Roma Downey, the actress
who played the angel Monica, in
Touched By An Angel, and who will be
playing Mary, in this mini-series.
This certainly isn’t the first time that
parts of the Bible have been
dramatized for television or the
movies. Perhaps you’ve seen: The
Ten Commandments, The Greatest
Story Ever Told, Jesus of Nazareth,
The Passion of the Christ, Jesus
Christ Superstar, Godspell, The
Prince of Egypt, or one of so many
other movies, films, or mini-series,
that have been made about parts of
the Bible.
I’m curious how well this History
Channel mini-series does at telling the stories of the Bible to a
modern and post-modern audience who may or may not be all
that familiar with the Bible. While the Bible is one of the
most widely read books in all of
the world, there are also many
who don’t know its stories, and
who are unfamiliar with its message.
I think it’s daring of the History
channel to commit to this project,
especially given its size and
scope. I also think it’s good marketing. On Amazon, one can buy
the DVD series, a book, and a devotional book. A company called
Outreach has church study and
marketing resources available
based upon this miniseries. There is a free Bible app,
linked to the series. Ironically, I
couldn’t find an actual book version of the Bible for sale that was
linked to the series, which I am
assuming must’ve been a deliberate decision.
This is certainly an ambitious
project, and perhaps it will be
great entertainment, as
well. Perhaps this retelling of
some of the Bible’s stores might
also move new people to faith, or
help rekindle faith for some who
have lost their way. Perhaps
there will be those who find the
stories of the Bible meaningful in
new ways, because of this.
Had you already heard about this
mini-series? Were you planning
on tuning in? My DVR is set to
record the series, and I plan to
watch. I hope it’s done well, and
I’m curious to see if this lives up
to its marketing campaign.

Holy Week and Easter Schedule
Palm Sunday March 24
Worship at 8:00am and 10:15am
On Palm Sunday, we will continue the tradition of having a dramatic reading
of The Passion. Available parts include: Narrator, Jesus, Peter, Centurion, Servant, Witness, Pilate, First Criminal, Second Criminal. If you would like to be a reader, please let
the church office know.
Maundy Thursday March 28
Seder at Saint James at 6:00pm
Saint James has invited us, along with Trinity Meredith, to participate in a traditional Seder meal,
hosted by the Jewish Temple. The Seder meal is the Passover meal, the meal eaten by the Jewish
people to remember when God delivered them out of slavery in Egypt. The Passover meal is also
the Last Supper, the meal that Jesus and his disciples ate together right before Jesus was arrested.
As we will be at Saint James on Maundy Thursday, there will be no Maundy Thursday worship
service at Good Shepherd. There is a cost involved to provide this Seder meal, and a free will
offering will be collected before the meal

Calumet Mailing
On Thursday, March 21, there will be a volunteer mailing at Calumet. We will begin at Calumet at
10:00 a.m. and should finish up no later than 3:00 p.m. A fabulous Calumet lunch will be provided. Please extend this invitation to folks in your church as well. As you know, we have a lot of
fun and Calumet certainly appreciates your help.
If you can help with this mailing please call the church to sign up. We will be car pooling and
leaving the church by 9:00am.
Soup and Luther
On Wednesdays in Lent, we gather for Soup and Luther. Soup is served at 6pm, and then around
6:30, Pastor Dave presents about Luther and the Lutherans. This year, we are watching the PBS
documentary entitled "MARTIN LUTHER: Empires"
"Martin Luther's attack on the all-powerful Catholic Church was a knife to the heart of an empire
that had endured for over a thousand years. Nailing his treatise to the doors of the Wittenberg Cathedral, this previously obscure German monk changed the world forever, unleashing forces that
plunged Europe into war and chaos. But Luther would do more than revolutionize the Church - he

Spring Gathering of Women at

We are excited to have a Massachusetts women's congregational unit host this year's Spring
Gathering!
We will start with Registration and Refreshments at 9:30am. Following a short business meeting
and current synodical news and events, we will have a Bible Study on our theme using Gal 3:2729 as our bible verse. A lunch will afford time for nourishment and fellowship.
The afternoon will offer three choices:
a) Craft workshop making Act Boldly bookmarks led by Tracy Jahrling
b) "Empowering Women Through Fun and Humor"
c) Prayer Time in Chapel in the Woods
The day will end with worship led by Pastor Anne Deneen of St. Paul's in Gloucester. We should
be on our way home by 3:30pm.
There will be a collection of In-Kind Gifts for the Woburn Council of Social Concern (nonperishable items for their Food Pantry) and 1/2 of our worship offering will be given to our NE W/
ELCA Mission Project for Karla L.V., a nursing student in rural Honduras. Funds collected will be
supplemented by the NH Chapter of Thrivent Financial.
Registration Cost is $15 and deadline for registration is April 29th!!! (We need a count for lunch
and for paper copies.) If anyone is planning on registering on-site, please let our registrar know
by the deadline to make it into the count.)

Nibblers
This month (March) Nibblers will be going to Kathleen’s Cottage in Bristol. Kathleen’s is a cute
Irish place with fantastic food. If you are interested in going please call the office to sign up.
Next month (April) Nibblers will be going to The Bob House in Moultonborough. This will be a
new restaurant. If you are interested in attending please call the office to sign up.

FUNDRAISERS FOR GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH
It's that time of year to start thinking about ways we might be able to raise a few extra dollars for
our much needed general fund needs. Due to the economy, every extra dollar helps support our
church maintenance, pastoral needs, food programs, community and many other God given
choices. Here are a couple fund raisers which we are again running for year 2013. We need people
to help stuff bags and manage races for New Hampshire running and triathlon events which we
have been invited to participate. It takes only 4-8 hours of your time. In the past, our church has
received about $500 per race for our assistance a few days prior to the race. We have all had good
times and plenty of comradeship during the hours the volunteers have spent together.
Here is a recap:
IRONMAN 70.3 (MILES) TIMBERMAN: Gilford NH August 18, 2013 We will be asked to stuff
bags (energy bars, runners bibs, literature etc) Need about 15-20 people for volunteers. Lunch
provided, T-Shirts provided-a good time.
REACH THE BEACH NH -(Cannon Ski Area to Hampton Beach-200 Miles in 24 Hours) September
13-14, 2013 A relay race in which we are asked to manage at a relay point located in Laconia
NH. We log in the runners and park cars and direct the relay runners etc. We usually work from
9PM in the evening to about 5:00 AM in the morning. Yes, the participants are running all night
long. Lot's of fun for all with coffee & donuts, t-shirts, fellowship. Need 20 people. We will try to
have 2 shifts to make it easier for everyone. Bring warm clothes and rain gear-just in case.

THRIVENT CHOICE DOLLARS: (THRIVENT FINANCIAL FOR LUTHERANS) This is the Lutheran Insurance and Annuity Program which allocates free funds to our church or charitable organization of your choice (over 1000 choices). Any Thrivent policy member can make that choice

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ
Another year, and I’m back as council president again. I’m not sure if that is because the rest of the
council thought I did a good job, or that no one else wanted to do it. In any case, I’ll see if I can keep
myself out of trouble for another year.
Here’s the monthly update on the last council meeting:
•
Finances look pretty good for the first part of the year. Let’s keep that up!
• Council will be holding a retreat on April 7th after services to begin discussing our vision for
the future. If you are interested in attending, let me know.
•
Our new congregational directory should be available next week. Look for a copy in the
narthex.
• Good Shepherd will be joining with St. James for a Maundy Thursday Seder, to be held at St.
James. Watch for more details as we get closer to the date.
• Bishop Hazelwood will be here to visit Good Shepherd the second weekend of Bike Week this
year. We will have an informal meeting between services, coffee with the Bishop, and a more formal session after second service. Again, watch for more details as we get closer!
• Next month we will be discussing more options for giving. The collection plate will continue to
be a player … should we be considering moving into the modern world of electronic funds transfers?
We will also discuss the idea of establishing some home bible study groups … things do seem to
come back around for those of you who have done this before!
As I write this we are looking at a potential winter storm coming in over the weekend. The local
economy will certainly appreciate any snow we can generate … although we might prefer to have
these come in on Thursday nights so our potential visitors can make it up! Stay safe in the weather,
whatever it does.
As we look towards the Easter season we need to remember that it starts with the cross … before the
celebration. So, as always, remember … Christ is risen, he is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Message from the Juve Family:
Ruth and I are active with missionary activities in the Philippines. The Lord is
answering our prayers and we contribute by hosting and attending Bible Study which attracts a
large number of people.
Hunger for the Lord is great here as it was when we were in China.
