The Magic of Text Setting
SUSAN DEAS BA BMus AMusA MMus MMTA
How does the music enhance the text? When a composer
takes a text, for a song, an opera, a choral piece, or
anything vocal, their job is to bring out the meaning
and emotion of the words through appropriate music.
Explore how composers have approached this aspect
of classical music, by listening to some particularly
innovative and effective examples, and exploring a
little of the craft itself and how it works.

Famous Treason Trials
Throughout History
JUDY KING BA MA
Kings, Queens and Presidents have stood in the
dock and faced charges of treason for betraying
their country. The crime of treason has often
attracted the death penalty through the centuries.
The study of treason trials reveals a great deal
about the contemporary society in which they
take place, but historians don’t always agree on
the interpretation of the evidence available.

Christmas with the Plantagenets was a complicated
affair. Quarrelling children, rival mistresses, and
the added stress and potential social humiliation
of whether you would be seated above or below
the salt! From the late 12th to the 14th century,
the Plantagenets would hold some of the greatest

Lost in the Labyrinth
Greek and Roman Sicily
SALLY MORRIS Dip Art BA (Hons) PhD

Follow the trail of the amazing labyrinth – a path leading
back to 3000BC. Invoking the myths of Theseus and the
Minotaur in Bronze Age Crete, the mysterious maze
has travelled as far east as India and as far west as the
Americas. Ancient sources describe them variously as
deathly traps, the loci for fertility rites, plans of forts
or cities, and symbols of sacrifice.
The great island of Sicily is a true crossroads of the
ancient Mediterranean, linking East and West, North and
South, Italy and Africa, Christian and Muslim. Explore
some of the spectacular remains of Sicily’s ancient past,
from the remains of Semitic Phoenicians and the colossal
stone temples built by the ancient Greeks of the 6th
century BC, to lavish Roman mosaics and theatres. Sites
include the Greek temples and theatres in Syracuse,
Agrigento, Selinunte and Segesta, and the Roman villa

and sieges in ancient times through to the 20th century.
After the Romans and Byzantines from Constantinople
came the Arabs and then the Normans, the last creating
in the 12th century a united kingdom with South Italy.
Sicily was later ruled by kings from Germany, Anjou,
Aragon, Austria and Spain, each leaving their own stamp
on the cities. Explore Sicily’s distinctive Arab-Norman
monuments including the glorious Monreale Cathedral,
Palermo’s Cappela Palatina and La Martorana, then trace

The June 1967 war was a watershed in the history of the
Arab-Israeli conflict. In only 6 days, Israeli forces crushed
the Egyptian, Jordanian and Syrian armies and conquered
large portions of their territories. The United Nations
Security Council Resolution 262 ended the war, however
it still remains one of the most controversial documents,
debated by all parties involved. As a response, the Arabs
started the 1973 Yom Kippur War to conquer back the
territories occupied in 1967. Look at the events that led
to war; domestic, regional and global rivalries; military
history of the wars; immediate and long term outcomes
of the wars; and their impact on current conflict
reconciliation between Israel and its neighbours.

Part 5: Introduction to
Quantum Mechanics
NEW Linguistics
TIBOR MOLNAR
A more detailed inquiry (from Part 4) into some of the
discoveries that led to our current ‘quantum mechanical’
description of the physical world. Re-examine the major
experiments and their interpretations; ponder just what
it is that is ‘quantised’; and explore what, if anything,
Quantum Mechanics tells us about the physical world.
Discuss the problems facing QM, and why it cannot
explain how the world actually ‘works’. Prerequisite:

Demystifying 20th Century
Classical Music
NEW
ANDY BROMBERGER ASCM BMUS
Listeners of classical music often find 20th century music
difficult and demanding. The century spans the end
of Romanticism, Atonalism, neo-Classicalism, Chance
Music, Electronic Music and Minimalism. Each of these
new musical ideas was a reaction by composers against
the status quo. Demystify this music by putting it into a
historical and sociological context, looking at the World
Wars, the rise of Communism, Nazism and the Cold War.

The period from around 1880 to 1920, sometimes
described as Impressionism, has given us some of the
most beautiful and bewitching music of western history.
Composers such as Sibelius, Elgar, Mahler, Debussy

in the last moments before many composers abandoned
‘normal’ music and went atonal. Examine the music
