From The Chairman
Hello everyone and welcome to the third Anime Boston and the first
to be held at our new home, the Hynes Convention Center.
Boston is one of America’s oldest cities and is known for its rich history and culture. From the early days of the American Revolution
through the cultural and sporting events of today, the people of Boston have been passionate about their city and proudly share that passion with others. Just ask any Red Sox fan.
Boston’s anime fans are no exception. In 2003, over four thousand
people showed up to attend the first Anime Boston. Many more people wanted to come, but the Boston Fire Marshal made us turn them
away. Last year, we expanded our space, but still had to cut off preregistration a month early.
This year, Anime Boston occupies nearly 100,000 square feet. We
should finally be able to open our doors wide and welcome thousands
more anime fans from the New England area and beyond.
Anime Boston is a testament to the passion of anime fans. We’re here
to celebrate that passion with you…whether it’s through watching
anime screenings, meeting guests, wearing costumes, attending panels, singing karaoke, playing games, dancing, or shopping.
On behalf of all our staff and volunteers, I would like to thank you for
coming to Anime Boston 2005. I am happy to see you in Boston and
hope you have as much fun at Anime Boston as the staff has had in
putting it together for you.
Sincerely,
Patrick Delahanty

Yoko
ISHIDA
Guests of honor
Blessed with an endearing, expressive singer’s voice and a dynamic range, Yoko was
selected as the featured vocalist on Geneon Japan’s Para Para Max CD series. From
there, she emerged as one of the anime
industrys’ most prolific and outstanding
female singers, performing the memorable
theme songs to series such as Pretear,
A Little Snow Fairy Sugar, Ai Yori Aoshi,
Petite Princess Yucie, Gunparade March,
Ai Yori Aoshi~Enishi~ and Texhnolyze. Yoko’s
first solo album, “sweets,” was unveiled
in 2003, and had the unique distinction of
being released both in Japan and the U.S.
that same year to anime fans.
© GENEON ENTERTAINMENT, INC.
In 2004, Yoko’s popularity skyrocketed
even higher, as she performed the theme
song to the new GAINAX series, This
Ugly and Beautiful World and launched the
“Hyper Yocomix” album, featuring popular
anime songs set to a Eurobeat mix. Yoko
was “discovered” once again, this time by
a U.S. video game producer, who had attended her summer concert and presented
her the opportunity to perform the ending
theme song, “Foolish Dreams” on Vivendi
Universal Games’ Red Ninja: End of Honor.
When she’s not practicing in a studio,
Yoko can be found as an assistant host for
a popular radio broadcast program (Okui
Masami Kiss 3) with friend and colleague
Masami Okui.
With her recent theme song performance
for the new Ah! My Goddess TV series and
her next anticipated album, “Yoko Ishida
- All of Me”) set for release in Japan on
March 2005 (and May 2005 in the U.S.),
Yoko continues to be a stand out performer/entertainer whose success can be
directly linked to both her musical talents
and her loyal fans.

A Tree of Palme (ADV Films)
Borrowing visual stylings from Pinocchio, this stunningly beautiful and slightly
surreal tale follows Palme, a robot desperate to become a human boy. Along his
journey he gathers a rag-tag group of misfits and learns how difficult it can be
trying to deal with all that humanity entails as he journeys with them across
deserts of floating jellyfish and forests filled with what can only be described as
human-sized psychic sea cucumbers.
Appleseed (Geneon)
In case you missed it in the theaters, this is the ground-breaking cell-shaded
CGI extravaganza based on the classic manga from the legendary Masamune
Shirow. In the future, a paradise exists where the artificial bioroids keep
humanity at peace. Of course, not everyone is satisfied with this and it falls
to our heroine, plucked from the fringes of society where war still wracks the
ruined cities, to prevent disaster. Fans of block-buster animation should make
sure to check it out.
Aquarian Age the movie (Synch-Point)
Pretty boys and cute girls wage a war with psychic and magical weapons right
under the noses of the modern world. Based on the massive multi-media
franchise in Japan, the movie introduces a new enemy to the ancient battle to
control the Earth: dragons attack, girls fight and things blow up.
Blame! (Media Blasters)
Based on the popular manga, this series of shorts explores a bleak future of a
city far outgrown humanity. There is nothing but the city – the megastrucutre
– and amid its crumbling innards the last vestiges of humanity try to fend off
murderous robots resembling demons from Hellraiser.
Boogiepop and Others (RightStuf)
The live-action movie continues the Boogiepop franchise, in as much as it
provides even more surreal horror mysteries and answers no questions. Told in
the same non-linear manner as the anime, it follows several characters as their
own strange problems orbit around Boogiepop herself. Fans of the TV series
and horror fans in general should make sure to check it out.
Boogiepop Phantom (RightStuf)
Now that the live-action movie has been released, revisit the anime. The
television series followed several different plot threads and characters through
their own tragic tales, with the specter of Boogiepop in the center of it all,
grimly stepping in to dispose of anything too far beyond the norm. Disturbing
stories and non-linear storytelling made this a cult classic.

Bubble Gum Crisis

Re-mastered and recently rereleased, this is the OVA that many
anime fans grew up on. It has all the
classic cyberpunk elements with that
distinctive anime style: a team of cute

robots run amok and the greed of

Burst Angel

The classic tale of beautiful women

extensive CGI with gorgeous

everything GONZO is famous for.

Chrono Crusade (ADV Films)
The unlikely pair of a spunky gun-slinging nun named
Rosette and her faithful demon sidekick Chrono travel the
world exorcising devils and fighting monsters. Their fates
are intertwined, as they are bound together by demonic pact.
Chrono’s powers are only released at the expense of Rosette’s
life-force, however, and their bond goes far beyond a simply

Cromartie High School (ADV Films)
Elfen Lied (ADV Films)
This schizophrenic show swings between the anime
extremes of super-cuteness and hyper-violence. One
moment the mysterious Nyu is cute and adorable – the next
she’s murderously cruel. The people hunting her down aren’t
much better. When she is taken in by two young cousins,
they have no idea what mess they’re getting into.
Five Star Stories (ADV Films)
This baroque and convoluted classic is finally available in
the US. Piloted by both a privileged noble and engineered
biological computer in the shape of a woman, gargantuan
and extravagantly designed robots fight in an unimaginably
distant future.
FLCL (Synch-Point)
GAINAX’s modern classic is the timeless story of a boy
growing up to be a man, except that instead of pimples and
a breaking voice, he’s got robots literally beating their way
out of his brain. The studio’s trademark attention to detail,
genius composition and symbolic storytelling is expertly
combined with breath-taking animation to produce an
anime that should have a place on everyone’s shelf.

into stardom, the misfit J-pop band “Mixed Juice” agrees to
a mad scientist’s plan to send someone to the moon without
a… rocket. If they can be the first band to play on the moon,
their success is guaranteed, right? They’ll have to survive the
increasingly deranged contraptions built to get them there
first.
Wolf’s Rain (Bandai)
There is an old legend that speaks of a hidden paradise on
Earth - A paradise in which only wolves can find. And while
thought to have been extinct for hundreds of years, wolves
indeed still walk the Earth... hidden among mankind. Now,
a group of outcast wolves set out to find Paradise. Each is
driven by their own personality and desires, but together they
are pursued by humans seeking to quench their own thirst for
power and vengeance.
Yugo the Negotiator (ADV Films)
Yugo is a negotiator with a reputation for never losing and
doing whatever it takes to get the job done and bring the
hostages home alive. When a young woman’s father is taken
prisoner in the Middle East, Yugo calls on all his resources in
an attempt to bring him home safely.
Yukikaze (Bandai)
To fight back against extradimensional invaders advancing
through a gate opened in Antarctica, Earth formed an
elite military unit and provided it with the most advanced
technology available. They were able to beat the aliens back
into their own dimension, but the war still wages. Rei Fukai
is the melancholic and antisocial pilot of Yukikaze, a fighter
jet equipped with a sentient computer system. When it seems
like the aliens have infiltrated the human military, can Rei
trust anyone else except himself – and his plane?

Hall-Vote Costume Contest
Cosplay Main Events:
You demanded it so here it is – Anime Boston’s own version of a Hall
Costume Contest, and when we say ‘hall’ we mean in the hall!
During the three days of the convention, selected staff members will
be circulating the halls with Staff Vote tickets which they will hand
out to any exceptional cosplayers they see. If you collect three staff vote
tickets, you can turn them in at Masquerade Headquarters to receive a
prize ribbon. There is a limit of one ribbon per costume, but the same
cosplayer may win multiple ribbons for different costumes. Masquerade
Headquarters will be open Friday 9 AM – 11 PM, Saturday 10 AM – 4:30
PM, and Sunday 10 AM – 3 PM.
Masquerade:
One of the traditional highlights
of any Anime Convention is the
Masquerade, a theatrical performance
in which groups of fans wear costumes
and perform short skits based on
their favorite Anime. These skits
may be funny or serious, parody or
action, single-series or wacky crossover. In addition to the skits, walk-on
participants will show off their most
spectacular and elaborate costume
creations. A panel of staff and
celebrity judges will present awards to
the best performances and costumes.
This year, our Masquerade will
start with a special opening act,
a live on-stage performance by a
band cosplaying as the rock group
Bad Luck from Gravitation! In
costume and in character, this group
will present a selection of music
from the Gravitation anime, in the
original Japanese! This act is part of
the masquerade and not a separate
performance; there will not be separate
seating for Bad Luck only.
No signup is required for the Hall-Vote Costume Contest, and every
costume at the convention is automatically eligible. Come on, cosplayers!
Show us what you’ve got!
Cosplay Human Chess:
Traditional human chess is a suspensefilled spectacle in which two players
direct the movements of thirty-two
people acting as the pieces on a giant
chess board, who enact the captures
with live stage combat. In our cosplay
version, every piece will be a character
from a popular Anime series. Come
see your favorite characters perform
signature moves, defeat their rivals
or be tragically defeated, and come
face-to-face with people you’d never

Cosplay Panels and Gameshows:
Beginners Costume Help:
New to cosplay? At this panel, experienced cosplayers will discuss
costume design and construction, and demonstrate the techniques
they have used to create award-winning costumes, using free sample
materials.
Weapon Making:
Making a ball gown from scratch is one thing, but creating a fifteenfoot pole-arm or a realistic bazooka requires a whole different set of
skills. In this panel experienced cosplay weapon-makers will teach and
demonstrate the techniques they have used to achieve complicated and
realistic weapons without violating convention weapons policies.
series will answer questions and compete to
win an in-character date! Watch your favorite
characters answer questions like, “Bachelor
number one, where would you take me for a
romantic weekend?” or, “Bachelor number two,
if you were a tree, what kind of tree would you
be?” There are certain to be romance, madness
and threats of violence at this must-see cosplay
game show event!
Emergency Costume Repair Station
The Emergency Cosplay Repair station
provides supplies for cosplayers to repair
damage suffered by costumes during the
convention. The station makes available a
variety of repair materials both for cloth and
fabric and for props, and can be used free of
charge by any convention attendee.
Friday 10 AM – 11 PM, Saturday 10 AM – 4:30
Working with and Altering Patterns:
Here experienced costumers will demonstrate how to sew from
patterns, as well as how to modify basic costume patterns to make the
one-of-a-kind garments required by so many anime costumes. Special
attention will be given to patterns for kimono, hakama and other
traditional Japanese garments.
Iron Cosplay
Think you can put together a “ghetto-fabulous” cosplay with duct
tape, fabric scraps, and construction paper in 15 minutes? Come test
your cosplay skills and win awesome prizes, and don’t forget to use the
“secret ingredient…”
Fabric Swap:
Do you have a lot of fabric scraps left over after costume projects? Do
you need one square foot of green satin to do the trim on your newest
project? Bring your scrap bag to the Fabric Swap and trade leftovers
with other cosplayers – one craftsman’s scrap is another craftsman’s
treasure.

All the most commonly cosplayed series have
been assigned specific one-hour time slots
in which they should gather, organized in

days. Cosplayers from series not assigned a

This was nearly double the number of attendees at Mikkakan in June 2001, a
record for New England at the time. Even if the high estimate of 1000 people

Arisia has been there for several years with an attendance of around 2,500.
Working with Anime On DVD, interest in Anime Boston began growing quickly.
Large or nearby anime conventions were peppered with Anime Boston 2003 flyers,
program guide ad swaps were arranged, and booth space was reserved at Otakon

other anime conventions, Anime Boston’s senior staff based the new attendance
estimates on the advice from other conventions’ years of experience. At this point,
it was estimated that Anime Boston would have maybe 1,000 to 2,000 attendees
by the time the convention came around in April.
Anime Boston 2003 Facts and Figures:
