Memorial Scholarship
Fund
The fourth annual Jackson Casey Memorial Golf Tournament, presented by
Apex, took place last July at the Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria,
VA. There were 120 players who gathered from all over the country in loving
memory of Jackson.
Through the golf tournament and individual contributions, the Jackson
Casey Fund received more than $215,000. And in the 2015-2016 school year,
50 scholarships totaling $150,000 were awarded in Jackson’s name.
Since its inception in 2012, the Jackson Casey Fund has raised nearly
$800,000 to benefit the mission of ThanksUSA and has awarded 123
scholarships in Jackson’s name.
“Thank you for supporting my endeavors and those
of fellow military families through Jackson’s life.”
— Benjamin Solem
Jackson was an energetic and caring eleven-year-old who touched many people with his kindness in a
short time. He loved sports and enjoyed competing, especially with his brother and sister. He was a great
teammate, enthusiastic and supportive in victory or defeat. Jackson was a fun and loving brother and friend
to everyone he met.
In partnership with ThanksUSA, the Jackson Casey Fund was created to honor the women and men of the
Armed Forces by providing need-based scholarships for their children and spouses. The scholarships given
in Jackson’s name will benefit families from Virginia, with an emphasis on Northern Virginia.
Jackson enjoyed attending military ceremonies with his grandfather, and was fascinated by the military
and our men and women in uniform. Jackson’s giving nature and huge heart, combined with his love of the
military, made this feel like the right place to focus the work of The Jackson Casey Fund.
Thank you for your commitment to continuing Jackson’s legacy of helping others and for thanking
military families!
Our Mission:
To keep the memory and spirit of Jackson alive
throughout the community and to help raise funds
for college scholarships for children and spouses of
our nation’s soldiers.

ThanksUSA’s scholarship program is unique in
that both spouses and children of servicemen and
servicewomen can apply to the same organization
for support. Our scholarships are need-based –
enabling those who most need and deserve the
opportunity to transform their lives through higher
education the opportunity to do so.
This year, ThanksUSA received nearly 1,800
applications from the spouses and children of our
armed forces. While we were honored to provide
more than 250 scholarships in 2015, valued
at $3,000 each, we could only meet a small
portion of the need among deserving applicants.
In 2016, with your help and that of other likeminded Americans, we seek to award at least 500
scholarships totaling $1.5 million.
T•
Scholarship Program Highlights
An Urgent Call
H
Our liberties come with a heavy price. America’s
servicemen and servicewomen volunteer to serve
our nation and find themselves on the front lines in
Iraq and Afghanistan. As a result of this dedication
of their careers and lives to our great nation, the
loved ones left at home become, in a way, our
families and our children too.
ThanksUSA is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3)
organization that mobilizes Americans of all ages
to provide tangible thanks to the men and women
serving our country and defending our freedoms
through need-based educational scholarships
to the dependents and spouses of U.S. military
personnel, with special emphasis given to those
who lost a loved one in service to America.
ince ThanksUSA’s inception in 2006, we have
S
awarded nearly 3,700 scholarships for a total
value of more than $11 million
●● Our scholarship recipients represent all military
branches – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps,
Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserve – and
come from each of the 50 states and the District
of Columbia

About ThanksUSA
U S A
2015/16 Choice of Catalogue for
Philanthropy: Greater Washington
ThanksUSA has
been chosen for the
2015/16 Catalogue for
Philanthropy: Greater
Washington, making
it one of the region’s
best community-based
charities. This award
recognizes ThanksUSA’s effectiveness and success
in working to provide scholarships to children and
spouses of military families.
“I am very proud of my father’s
military career and it’s nice
to know that ThanksUSA and
its sponsors continue to honor
military families.”
— Kevin Forsyth
Justin Kidd
Jackson Casey/ThanksUSA Scholar in attendance
“I am honored and humbled to be a recipient of the Jackson Casey Fund/
ThanksUSA scholarship. You are allowing students like myself the
opportunity to succeed in our endeavors during a significant time in our
lives. What you have done, and continue to do, deserves more than a simple
‘thanks.’ I will go beyond by using your donation to continue my education,
become a master in my field, use my expertise to provide aid to others, and
leave a legacy of my own. Thank you so much.”
Though his military childhood presented
challenges, Justin Kidd now realizes the life
lessons he learned along the way. “My experiences
taught me much about perseverance, tenacity,
determination, interpersonal relationships, and
diversity. Most importantly, my military upbringing
taught me to appreciate the freedoms we enjoy as
U.S. citizens, the many who sacrificed to afford us
such freedoms, and a strong sense of duty.”
With the assistance of a $3,000 Jackson Casey
Fund/ThanksUSA scholarship, this proud Air Force
dependent is continuing undergraduate studies
as an Honors College student at James Madison
University.
Majoring in kinesiology, Justin plans to earn a
medical degree and specialize in physical medicine
and rehabilitation. “I feel not only motivated
but also inspired to study kinesiology, earn my
professional degree, and share the expertise that
I gain with those who need aid.” To complement
his studies, Justin is a member of the JMU Honors
Fraternity and the Pre-Physical Therapy and
Pre-Medical Societies, and is a Human Physiology
Teaching Assistant. In the fall of 2016, he will serve
as an Honors 100 First-Year Seminar Teaching
Assistant, mentoring Honors College freshmen.
In addition to his studies, Justin serves on
the Philanthropy Committee of the Pre-Med
Association. He has raised funds for Special
Olympics, participated in Relay for Life, and
distributed food to needy families in the community.
Justin also enjoys sharing his school spirit as
a JMU musician. An enthusiastic member of the
Marching Royal Dukes, Justin performed during
every football game, marched in the Harrisonburg
holiday parade, and traveled to numerous locations
to entertain and inspire. Justin and his bandmates
make sure that JMU’s annual high school band
competition, Parade of Champions, runs smoothly,
and he hopes to be a Marching Royal Dukes drill
instructor in the upcoming academic year.
