BIOGRAPHY
Her multi-cultural style of music stems from being half Nigerian and half American. The
daughter of an American father and a Nigerian mother, Janelia sings Afro-Pop and Reggae
music with soulful vocal delivery and African World Music roots, this she playfully calls
“JaneliaSoul”. Janelia was born in Houston, Texas and grew up in Nigeria. She is bilingual
and enjoys writing songs and singing in English, Nigerian pidgin and Yoruba her native
tongue.
Her passion for music began in elementary school while she was growing up in Nigeria.
Janelia was a member of both the school and church choirs. Her professional career
began when she moved to the U.S.A to further her education in the arts. While attending
Morgan State University where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Janelia was a
backup singer for several local and regional acts. She later started touring with a national
act where she met a Bassist named Femi Sanya and together they formed a World and
Reggae band which was called “JaneliaSoul Afrique”. Today, Janelia has been described
by her fans as having a graceful stage presence when she is performing live. Her band is
known as “Janeliasoul” and it is the only Afro-pop/Reggae female fronted band based in
the U.S.A.
Janelia as a multifaceted artist is able to move fluidly between Afro-Pop, Reggae and
Soul. "Bakassi" has the contemporary sound of African music (Afro-pop) while "Grown
Woman” is a Reggae rendition of a Beyonce original which gives Janelia a crossover
appeal. Janelia recently moved back to the United States. Prior to her relocation Janelia
returned to her roots to record and promote two new single in Nigeria titled “Sexy Nana”
and “Bakassi”. Both songs became popular tunes on the streets and clubs in Lagos.
Janelia says. “It was important for me to return home to get new inspirations and make
new fans”. While on tour in Nigeria some of Janelia's performances include Africa Meets
Reggae festival, Ojude Oba festival sponsored by Glo and University of Lagos (Unilag)
Benefit concert.
Preceding Janelia’s stay in Nigeria, her performances in the U.S.A include Face2Face
Awards in New York where she paid tribute to honoree, Angelique Kidjo, with an acoustic
rendition of “Agolo”. Janelia and her band also performed at Barrack Obama's inaugural
ball held at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC. She headlined many venues in the
Maryland and Washington DC region such as Recher Theater in Towson, MD and the
Creative Alliance in Baltimore, MD. Janelia has also shared the stage with international
acts like Seun Kuti, and national acts like Raheem DeVaughn. She has played many
festivals across the U.S.A and in Nigeria including Havanna Festival in Ibadan,
Nigeria; Artscape in Baltimore, MD; City Rumble Festival in Lagos, Nigeria; Columbia
Festival of the Arts in Columbia, MD, Detroit World Music Festival in Detroit, MI; AfricanAmerican Festival in Rochester, NY and many more.

such as the Africa Malaria Day Benefit Concert in Washington, DC where she helped raise
funds and awareness for Malaria treatment and prevention in Africa and the
#BringBackOurGirls Benefit concert in Lagos, Nigeria were she joined the movement to
bring awareness to the 200+ Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping in Borno State, Nigeria. This
issue was also a theme in Janelia’s latest video “Bakassi”.
Janelia's musical influences include Mariam Makeba, Bob Marley and Sade Adu. She is
currently working on her new album. This new album will include her new Afro-Pop
singles for her fans in Nigeria and at the Africans in the Diaspora at large; it will also
include several reggae tunes for her fans in the U.S.A and across the globe. The album is
titled “Afro-Pop Reggaelicious” and slated to be released in summer 2015.
'Janelia' has a warm, with an edgy feel to his hip hop music feature with some awesome
incredible musical arrangements, making a perfect for a Urban type Afro-Pop and Reggae
music with soulful vocal delivery & African World Music Roots Film, TV, and Commercial
Projects.
