Summer 2013
On Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20 many
special memories were made during Mother-Son
Jammin’ Fun and the Father-Daughter Dance.
Families from St. Gabriel and surrounding schools
enjoyed good company and great food. The boys
had fun playing games and the girls danced the
night away. The events raised $1200 that will go
toward upgrades in school security and technology.
The Knights of Columbus, Tri-County Council #3414,
sponsored a Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest earlier
this year, titled “The Importance of Religious Freedom”.
Our 7th and 8th graders each had the opportunity to
write a paper covering the topic and describing what
religious freedom means to them. We’re proud to
announce that 8th grader, Spencer Wright, won 1st
place in the contest and was awarded a savings bond
by the Knights.

ITBS Test Results
St. Gabriel School gives a yearly standardized test to assess the progress of our
students. The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph designates the Iowa Test of Basic
Skills as the instrument to be used by all diocesan schools. The test results give
information regarding each student’s achievement scores and also provides
comparative information in terms of rankings. We receive a national percentile
ranking (NPR) which compares our school to all other schools in the nation who took
this test at this time of year and other students who took the test at the same time.
Student scores are compared to all students which could include such schools as
Pembroke, Barstow, or other prestigious private schools.
A percentile rank does not mean the same as a percent. For example, an NPR score
of 96 means that a school or student performed better than 96% of other schools or
students who took the same test at the same time. It does not represent a
percentage of correct answers.
The following report shows percentile ranking and Grade Equivalent (GE). The GE is
a decimal number that describes performance in terms of grade level and months.
For example, if a sixth-grade student obtains a GE of 8.4 on the Vocabulary test, his
score is like the one a typical student finishing the fourth month of eighth grade would
likely get on the Vocabulary test.

NEWS:
Cade Pool (’10) – Cade was selected for gold (top) Jazz Band, first chair (best out of the
district) and he also auditioned for all state Jazz and made Honorable Mention – 5th best in the
nation! He was chosen and inducted into the National Honor Society this year.

The 41st annual Spaghetti Dinner went off without a hitch on Sunday,
February 17th. Over 1600 meals were served, netting $11,824 for our
school. Thanks to the Messina Family and Friends who tirelessly donate
their time and resources each year to this delicious fundraiser!
Pizza Ranch Fundraiser
On Monday, April 15 St. Gabriel’s joined with Pizza
Ranch in a fundraiser that provided us with 5% of
sales that night and 100% of tips. Thank you to our
school families, parishioners and all who supported
our school and helped us raise $469!
Math Bee
On Friday, April 19, St. Gabriel’s fourth, fifth and sixth
grades participated in the annual Math Bee. Held at
St. Pius X High School, they competed against
participants from the other Northland Catholic
Schools. St. Gabriel had three contestants from each
grade. Fourth Grade participants were Mia Arnone,
Makena Cornelius and Joy Huynh. Fifth Grade
participants were Quinn Tran, Isabella Petry and
Anthony Pollina. Sixth Grade was represented by
Josh Wright, Luciano Biscari and Tio Krizogono. All
participants received a certificate and Josh Wright
walked away with the 3rd place trophy for sixth grade,
while Mia Arnone took 3rd among all the fourth
graders. We’re proud of all of our math bee
contestants!

We will have a special alumni table at the picnic and
a raffle drawing. Come visit with classmates and
previous teachers. There will also be games for the
kiddos!
Sweaty palms, nervous moments and deep breaths! Nine
middle-school students took to the final step, delivering their
speeches to classmates and three adult judges.
The topic was "A Person Who Has Overcome" and the students
presented fine research about a variety of people whom they
admired, both famous and personal. There were tributes to Stevie
Wonder, Jackie Robinson, relatives and others.
The nine contestants were:
8th grade-Adam Freese, Lawson Kalaiwaa, Archie Smith;
7th grade-Olivia DiMaggio, Clementina Ferraro, Jane Huynh;
6th grade-Tony Civella, Tio Krizogono, Joshua Wright.
The finalists all received certificates of participation and award pins.
The top three - Jane Huynh, Lawson Kalaiwaa and Joshua Wright - were
presented plaques by the Modern Woodmen of America Insurance Company,
sponsors of the annual contest. They went on to compete at the district level at
The Gamber Community Center in Lee's Summit. Jane Huynh won third place in
the district competition which made her eligible for the State Competition held on
May 23rd. We're proud to say that Jane took third place at State, bringing home a
trophy and $50!
Modern Woodmen's Speech Contest is only one of many free youth education
programs Modern Woodmen offers to schools nationwide. More than 100,000
students compete in the contest each year.
