When Wayne Whetsel’s doctor recommended routine heart tests, Wayne chose Abilene Regional Medical Center. “I’m so glad I did. They
found three blocked arteries and put in stents right then and there. They saved my life.” And it was more than the advanced technology and
procedures that impressed Wayne. “The nurses were great. They took such good care of me,” he says. “I couldn’t have asked for better people
or a better experience. And now, thanks to Abilene Regional, I’m back to doing what I love – restoring old cars and trucks.”
If it’s your heart, make the right decision. Choose Abilene Regional.

Discover! create! Explore!
Envision a world of adventure, traveling
in a virtual land to your favorite Texas hot
spot, listening to the relaxing ambience of
the tropical rain forest, or encountering the
aerodynamics of a rocket launch. imaginations run wild and activities are plentiful for
students attending an Abilene isD technology
camp at the local Texas state Technical college campus.
June 2011 will mark the third annual series of
summer technology camps for this partnership between the two educational organizations. For two years, the AisD has joined with
the Abilene branch of TSTC to offer week-long
computer camps for students entering 2nd
grade and above.
The day camps, taught by AisD teachers,
allow students to explore content via digital
media and create technology projects. students produce presentations while incorporating and manipulating graphics, animation,
sounds and video using multiple technology
devices. They also design print documents,
specifically cards, brochures, mini books, and
posters. At the end of the week, they are able
to showcase their projects to their parents,
and then take them home.
Most importantly, the kids had fun while they
learned.
“summer technology camps provide a place
for students to be creative and use their
academic skills to produce many different
types of technology projects,” said camp
coordinator Holly Woodard. “This is done in a
fun environment.”
No matter their skill level, students can have
an enriching and inventive experience.
For example, last year elementary-age students were able to choose from camp titles
such as, ocean commotion, Rainforest safari,
Truckin Across Texas and 3-2-1 Blast Off.
Meanwhile, middle school and high school
students were offered PhotoShop, which
gave students the opportunity to work with
digital photography.
For more information, inquiries can be made
to the AisD instructional Technology Department at 325-677-1444, ext. 3867.

When Abilene Families magazine editor Chesley Martin called Nancy Flores to
surprise her with the news that she had won the Mommy Makeover contest, Flores
said she actually thought Martin was calling to ask for more information. “It was
exciting!” Flores said about learning that she was the winner.
With encouragement from her husband, Chris, Flores wrote an essay asking
to be considered for the makeover. An innocent comment by her 12-year-old son
about how much he liked it when she fixed herself up translated in Flores’s mind as:
“Mom, you look embarrassing, so please fix yourself up before my friends see you at
school!” At that point, Flores decided that she wasn’t looking her best and wanted to
make a change.
She wrote that she had gotten into the daily habit of getting ready for the day
quickly, “meaning putting my hair up in a clip and having my make-up rushed.”
When she does take the time to “fix-up” herself, Flores says it takes about two hours
to shower and then dry and straighten her hair.
Her makeover adventure started with a personal shopping experience at Dillard’s,
with Linda Saxon, Pacesetter and Julie McCay, Sales Manager, after which she
received a dress, shorts, sandals, Capri pants and tops to interchange and create
multiple outfits.
“It was a nice experience. I’ve never been waited on,” Flores said. “Usually moms
are the ones waiting on everyone,” she said.
“My life revolves around my guys…I
would just like to have a few minutes of
peace to myself and some pampering.
I’m glad I’m a boys’ mom ... I like to do
sports with my kids.We get dirty quite a bit.
— Nancy Flores, Mommy Made-Over
Living with four guys—her high school sweetheart and husband of 14 years, and
her children Noah, 12; Diego, 6; and Romo, 3—keeps Flores hopping getting the
kids ready for school, working a full-time job, and shuttling the boys to baseball,
football, soccer and lessons.
“My life revolves around my guys…if they need something they get it,” she said.
“I constantly hear: ‘Mom, where’s this? Mom, can I…? Mom, I need this! Mom, are
you going to…? Mom, what are we going to eat? MOM!!’ I would just like to have a
few minutes of peace to myself and some pampering,” she wrote.
“I’m glad I’m a boys’ mom,” Flores said, adding that she likes to do sports with
her kids. “We get dirty quite a bit,” she said.
Although she was a tomboy growing up and still enjoys joining in with roughand-tumble boys’ activities, she said she also likes “girly” things, too, although she
said she doesn’t have anyone to share that with. “I love playing football, baseball and
basketball with my boys, but I would love to have some “girly” time,” she said in her
nomination essay.
At work, Flores continues to nurture by taking care of babies and their families
in the early childhood intervention department at the Betty Hardwick Center. Jenny
Goode, CEO of the center, said she has known Flores for a long time and was excited for Flores to win the award.
“Nancy is a really great employee. We love having her here!” Goode said, adding
that Flores is a busy mom and is so supportive of her husband and kids. “We are really proud of her!” Goode said.
In addition to her shopping spree, Flores also got a new hairstyle and color by

also at Incognito. She also received a facial makeover with Jeanette York with Clinique at Dillard’s.
With a new hairstyle, clothes and make-up,
Nancy had a photo shoot with Tiffany Turk, of Tiffany Turk Photography. The photo shoot was fun.
“Nancy was very nervous before the shoot,”
Chesley Martin, Abilene Families Editor said. “I
kept assuring her – Tiffany is fun, easy to work
with and has a wonderful eye for photographing

women to look their best. After a few minutes,
even with her family looking on, Nancy’s nerves
calmed and she began to really have fun with the
shoot.”
She completed the day with dinner at Carino’s
Italian Restaurant with her family to show off her
new look.
In addition to her new hairstyle, Flores also
received some tips from Incognito stylist Deanna
Poen on how to manage her new style without
having to spend a lot of time with it.
When her family saw her after her makeover,
Flores said they looked at her like they didn’t know
who she was.
“I truly believe it was a ‘once in a lifetime’
event,” Flores wrote to Abilene Families magazine
after her makeover. “I am so thankful that I was
chosen for this fabulous contest and loved working
with Chesley. She has inspired me to have confidence in myself and to be a trendy mom. Thanks
to all for helping me find my inner self…. ‘One hot

stirring things up

Even SuperMom Has Limitations
t
he glow of my laptop pierces the darkness like a beacon, beckoning a beyond a manageable pace. A way of life
weary mom come and work. Finally a moment of silence, though I was forced
to arise in the 5’s, a ridiculous hour to try to think coherently. I can hear the whir
of fans, the hum of a refrigerator. A baby cries out in the room next door.
A speaking engagement has called me away for the weekend to the far reaches of
East Texas. Pine trees embrace the road, the hills roll by lush green fields until a lake
appears. In other words, nothing like the charred, barren desert I left behind.
This is a remote place. If I hold my cell phone
in the air reception seems to improve. This is terrifically inconvenient, as between speaking times
I have been trying to negotiate a contract to buy
a house. So I found a high spot to stand on,
called home to talk numbers, dates, closings and
contracts at a volume that frightens wildlife.
My momma called it spinning plates. I call it
juggling knives. Whatever you call it, you do it
too. You are surely in the middle of a season
of doing more than seems possible or wise to
accomplish at one time.
The fate of mothers is to coordinate a list
of appointments, programs, jobs, meetings, re- Sarah Stirman is a freelance writer,
pairs, and conferences. It is a blessing and a call- mother of two and an avid blogger.
ing. A temptation and a curse to clutter the life sarahstirman.blogspot.com
I slip into easily, yet chafe against.
Moms become expert plate-spinners/
knife-jugglers out of necessity. If you can
change a DVD while starting dinner and
putting Barbie’s prom dress on all while
on the phone rescheduling a meeting for
work, it’s just another day for mom.
Then there is the nagging feeling that
it is never enough. We must form the parade to honor the pets, throw the birthday party, and never forget the whales.
Or the hungry. Or to recycle.
Woe when a plate gets dropped: someone gets sick, an appointment runs long,
a repair person doesn’t show up on time
(that’s a gimme), or a last minute meeting gets scheduled, or you just need some
extra cuddle time and a pajama day.
I try to embrace such interruptions as
reminders that life goes on betwixt and
between the crazy-making busy-ness, but
too often there is huffing and eye-rolling
about the necessity to rearrange my schedule. I’m a slow learner. It might be that all
the plates drop when a major event -- a
diagnosis, an accident, news of the good
or bad variety -- causes all of the other
spinning plates to be inconsequential.
As the sun climbs up the trunks of the
pines in this East Texas locale I close my
laptop, finished for the moment with the
writing part of my job for the day. My
mind is already pinballing through my
day, my week, and the month ahead to
calendars to coordinate, programs to attend and obstacles to hurdle. If I am to
maintain my SuperMom cape, I have to
be ready at a moment’s notice!
Oh... who am I kidding? We all know
I’m doing well to make it to the end of the
day having fed and hugged everyone. If
we show up where we are supposed to be
within 15 minutes of the start time it’s an
added bonus. Sometimes the wisest thing
a mom can do is know her limitations. l

Keep your cool. Your anxiety can actually increase your child’s tantrum! in a
calm, yet firm voice, say, “I know you’re mad. It’s not okay to scream.” This
acknowledges to your child that you understand their feelings or desires, which
increases emotional attunement, and informs them of behavioral limits.
Provide two alternative behaviors. You can say, “You can choose to walk quietly
by my side, or you can choose to sit quietly in the cart.”
if your child continues the tantrum, take him/her to the car even if this means
you need to carry him/her. if you’re tempted to give in, just remind yourself that
in the long run, addressing the unacceptable behavior will matter.

Talk briefly to your child in the car. For example, say “I understand you’re mad
and you really want that buzz lightyear. You cannot scream because it’s not
nice and it hurts people’s ears. since you decided to continue yelling and not
listen to mommy/daddy, you chose to take a time out to calm down.” The rule
of thumb for time out is one minute per year of age or until he/she is calm. This
is not a time to give a lengthy lecture or for your child to play games. Allow this
time to be boring so the child will not want to be in a time-out again.
After the time is served and your child is calm, briefly remind your child of the
rules for behaving in public, have your child apologize, and exchange a wonderfully loving hug and provide reassurance to your child that he/she is still loved.
if your child continues to misbehave, complete your trip at another time. Although punishments for your child seem like punishments for you, it will pay off.
You are teaching your child that when you say something, you mean business.
That’s a lesson worth leaving one grocery cart behind.

crunch, throw in some tortilla strips. There you have it!

n Have an A-to-Z scavenger hunt. The
kids will have to search the house and
make a list of objects that start with each
letter of the alphabet. To make it harder,
have them do it in order of the alphabet.
n Search for hidden treasures. Have a
child or parent hide a “treasure” somewhere in the yard or house. Create clues
the kids need to solve to find the next clue.
Finder’s keepers! Older children will love
to create clues and riddles for the younger
ones and it will keep their minds in “creative” mode. For younger kids you can
also find plenty of “seek and find” hidden
picture puzzles on the internet.
n Make and bake. Here’s an exercise
with numbers and fractions. Try new recipes and cut them in half or double them
for a yummy math exercise.

difficult to get kids to read during the summer. Try a book club, with points for books

might be among those who are counting days until school starts! Hearing the constant blare of the television accompanied by children still in their

as does watching your children turn

It is possible to survive the summer

to engage kids in quality activities every minute of the summer, with a little
creativity and very little money, you
can get your kids off the couch and

Get Your Grill On!
Backyard chefs, get ready to fire up the grills and cook up some
flavor. Whether you’re cooking just for the family or for all the
neighbors, make sure you’ve got plenty of great recipes and grilling
know-how.
Grilling tips
n let meat rest for several minutes before slicing or serving. This
lets the juices redistribute throughout the meat, which keeps it nice
and juicy.
n Slice flank steak diagonally across the grain, otherwise it will be
too tough.
n Know your ribs. Pork spare ribs come from the outer edge and
tend to be leaner. baby back ribs are shorter and are cut from
the back. country style ribs come from the shoulder area and are
meatier than the other cuts.
n When buying shrimp for grilling, make sure you get at least
jumbo sized (12 to 15 per pound), or colossal (about 10 per pound).
if they’re much smaller, they will be harder to handle and will cook
more quickly than the other ingredients on the skewer.

DID YOU KNOW:
Braces and Good Oral Hygiene
Everyone knows to brush their teeth. How often should someone with braces brush
and floss? And for how long? The answer is brush after every meal for at least three
minutes and floss daily. Brushing after each meal or snack will help keep teeth clean and
strong and help the braces actually move your teeth better. When your gums are puffy
and swollen it becomes difficult for the ties or ligatures to engage around the brackets.
Without proper force the wires cannot move the teeth as well.
Making sure to maintain good oral hygiene will lead to finishing treatment on time and a
healthier mouth and smile.
