Our Mission
Girl Scouting builds girls
of courage, confidence,
and character who make
the world a better place.
The Girl Scout Promise
On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country.
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
And to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place,
and be a sister to every Girl Scout.
“Think like a queen.
A queen is not
afraid to fail.
Failure is another
steppingstone to
greatness. “

Dear Friends,
Cindy L. Odom
Chief Executive Officer, GSWNY
We had an exciting year moving at the speed of girls! GSWNY continues to be the preeminent
leadership organization for girls and young women. With approximately 18,000 girls and more
than 7,000 adult volunteers across our nine-counties we are on a fast-pace to keep girls interested and engaged.
In 2014, we launched many new initiatives such as, STEM-A-PALOOZA which focused on
increasing girls’ access to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career fields. By
introducing interactive learning modules with leading subject matter experts as the facilitators,
girls are provided with networks of support as they dream big and plan for their futures. “I Can
Be Career Day” gave girls the opportunity to learn from women in fields like entertainment,
construction, education, law, medicine, veterinarian sciences and the arts just to name a few.
Girls asked questions and better understood the pathways these professional women had
pursued and achieved.

Ban Bossy, a national initiative, showed girls how to tap into their own leadership potential, be
as assertive as their male counterparts, and learn how to resolve conflicts with confidence to
combat bullying through the Ban Bossy Patch program. Our Council led the way in implementation of this program for our girls. We also hosted the GSUSA Communications Executive, Kelly
Parisi. We showcased our success of the Ban Bossy Program so it could be shared nationally.
Girl Scouts of Western New York is a progressive council that acknowledges the importance of
keeping beloved Girl Scout traditions while simultaneously adopting new and innovative initiatives that meet the changing needs of girls.
Financial Literacy is another cornerstone of the Girl Scout Movement. The Girl Scout Cookie
and the QSP program gives the girls an entrepreneurial experience equipping them with the
useful skills of goal-setting, money management, business ethics, decision making, and people
skills. If that is not enough, girls also flex their philanthropic muscles by giving back to the
community in meaningful ways. This is often demonstrated by them donating cookies to food
banks, homeless shelters and our Military troops overseas.
Last year, we were proud to have 46 young women who achieved the highest honor in Girl
Scouts, the Girl Scout Gold Award. The leadership skills, organizational skills and sense of community and commitment that come from “going for the Gold” set the foundation for a lifetime
of active citizenship. Colleges, employers and the military look favorably upon applicants with
this credential. Bravo to our girls for a job well done!
Creating a supportive environment for girls to have leadership experiences is our goal. Girl
Scouts of Western New York achieved success because of the collective efforts of the Board,
Staff, Volunteers and our many Supporters. Together we are helping girls to become leaders
now and in the future.
Your continued support and dedication throughout this past year and every year is greatly
appreciated and we thank you.
Yours in Scouting,
Judith A. Maness

Year in Review
Girl Scouts continues to be the premier leadership
organization for young women and is committed
to providing innovative, girl-centric leadership
experiences to generations now and in the future.
Girls Scouts of Western New York discover
themselves, connect with others, and take action
to make the world a better place.
STEM-A-PALOOZA
Have you ever used engineering skills to create a container for the perfect
egg drop, looked inside of a computer to see how it works, made slime, or
played GoldieBlox?
Girl Scouts introduces girls of every age to Science, technology, engineering,
and math (STEM). At the first ever STEM-A-Palooza event, 300 girls received the opportunity to explore the world of STEM with exciting hands-on
activities facilitated by leading Western New York female and male subject
matter experts at the Rochester Museum & Science Center.
STEM is an important advocacy area to Girl Scouts both on a local and a national level because research shows females are not pursuing these fields.
Only about 25% of STEM fields are held by women, but by 2018, 9 out of the
10 fastest-growing jobs in the U.S. will require significant training in science
and math, according to the Girl Scout Research Institute.
2
STEM-A-PALOOZA is one Girl Scouts of Western New York event among many that
highlights the importance of girls building confidence to pursue STEM career fields
while introducing and connecting them to a wider network of support with STEM
subject matter experts.
‘I Can Be’ Career Day
Whether she wants to be a scientist, a teacher, a doctor, a
lawyer, a reporter, a teacher, an accountant – every girl has the
right to not only dream, but to learn how she can achieve her
goal of whatever career she aspires to. The ‘I Can Be’ Career
Day event hosted by Girl Scouts of Western New York helped
250 girls do just that.
Approximately thirty female volunteers led sessions on various industries including health care, education, engineering,
journalism, law, social work, finance, and more. Girls submitted
their top career paths prior to the event and based on their
preferences had the chance to go to four different workshops
lasting approximately 40 minutes to learn about different
career paths.
In each workshop, girls received an introduction from the female leader. They were
able to participate in a hands-on activity that related to the specific field, and then
time was made available for a question-and-answer session. Girls who participated received a patch.
Cindy L. Odom, CEO of Girl Scouts of Western New York (GSWNY) opened up the
event and shared how honored GSWNY was for the professional women volunteers’ willingness to share their career journeys and conduct interactive modules
for girls, to inspire and educate them on how to make informed choices about their
future careers. ‘I Can Be’ Career Day inspired girls and provided them with an added opportunity to connect with a professional in their future career field of choice.
“Girl Scouts
contributes to girls’

Leadership Breakfast Series
At the 2014 Leadership Breakfast Series four Girl Scouts
spoke at the event and showcased the leadership skills
gained from being involved with Girl Scouts. Dr. Ainissa
Ramirez gave the keynote address and shared some of the
history of girls in science and inspired the audience to encourage the next generation of girls to consider how fun and
exciting science can
be. Approximately
200 people attended
the Leadership Breakfast Series held at the
Rochester Riverside
Convention Center.

“One of the many things I love
about volunteering with Girl
Scouts is the feeling of knowing I
help provide new goals for myself,
along with my Girl Scouts to reach.
I aim to make each scout year
better than the last. I want my Girl
Scouts to look back on their lives
and always remember their Girl
Scout experience as a great time
in their life and share that experience with others into adulthood.”
Sheila, GSWNY Volunteer
Volunteer Picnics
Girl Scouts of Western New York volunteers make huge contributions to help empower girls with invaluable experiences
that introduce them to new things and encourage them to
explore their leadership abilities.
Volunteers help girls learn the value of giving back to the
community, exploring the world around them, and creating
sisterly bonds among other beneficial lessons. Volunteers’
service makes a difference and is vital to fostering a community of discovery and support for girls.
GSWNY held two Volunteer Appreciation Picnics to celebrate volunteers’ deep commitment to the Girl Scout mission and allow an opportunity for volunteers to bring their
families to have fun.
Girl Scout Silver Award
The Girl Scout Silver Award is the second highest award that a Girl Scout Cadette (grades 6 to 8) can earn. Girl Scouts of Western New York had 189 girls
earn the Girl Scout Silver Award during the 2014 year.
4
20132014
Girl Scout Gold Award
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest national award a Girl Scout can
earn. This prestigious award challenges girls to change the world. Since
1919, girls who complete the requirements, find that their lives are
enriched as well as the lives of others in amazing and significant ways.
Girls who engage in Take Action
projects (especially through
the Bronze, Silver, and Gold
Awards) report that these
projects helped prepare them
to play an active role in their
communities.
Girl Scout Research Institute
To earn the Gold Award girls must complete two Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador journeys or earn the Silver Award and complete one Senior or
Ambassador journey. Each journey completed gives girls the skills needed
to plan and implement their Take Action project. Girls make a minimum
commitment of 80 hours including community service and leadership
development curriculum requirements. The leadership skills, organizational skills, sense of community, and commitment to reach this goal set
the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship as well as inspiring others
to take action within their community.
It is with great honor that we announce GSWNY had 46 amazing
young women “go for the gold” during the 2013-2014 year.

Customers gave a $5 donation to send a magazine voucher
to a veterans hospital patient, or a nut product to a man or
woman serving in the Armed Forces overseas or in Western
New York.
2014 Project Share
Girl Scouts of Western New York donated greater than
2000 tins of nuts to the Niagara Falls Air Base and more
than 200 magazines to the VA Hospitals of Batavia and
Buffalo.
SAGE Scholars Tuition Rewards Points Program
For the first time, GSWNY offered the SAGE Scholars Tuition Rewards Program through the Magazines and Munchies
Program. Collectively, girls raised 8.4 million worth of tuition
points to go toward their future college tuition.
8.4 Million

Women of Distinction
Girl Scouts of Western New York hosted 2014 Women of Distinction, a signature fundraising event that was led by thirty Girl Scouts in grades 9 through
12 and honored seven distinguished Western New York women. Women of
Distinction honors women who live or work in Western New York for their
accomplishments and contributions to mentoring and empowering girls and
young women in our communities.
More than 250 people attended to celebrate these women and Girl Scouting. Girl Scout presenters received an invaluable opportunity to be paired
with a Women of Distinction honoree for mentoring. Girls
received Dale Carnegie public speaking training to prepare
a speech based on their mentorship experience to present
at the event.
During the Women of Distinction event Girls served as
ambassadors, presenters, flag bearers, and mistress of
ceremonies.
Congratulations to the
2014 honorees.

Summer Camp
Camping allows girls to explore leadership, build skills, and develop a deep appreciation for nature. Girl
Scouts of Western New York provides premier outdoor programming for girls of all ages.
The 2013-2014 camping season ended with a 1% increase over the previous year. Girls enjoyed approximately 34 new programs at our overnight camp facilities, and at Camp Piperwood a new ropes course
was added.
Due to the generous grants that GSWNY received from the United Way of Rochester and the Erie
County Youth Bureau, we were able to serve more girls in our summer camp program.
• Served 57 girls through the Erie County grant
• Served 135 girls through the Monroe County grant
• Camp Piperwood had a 35% increase in attendance
• Camp Timbercrest had a 13% increase in attendance
• Camp Seven Hills/Lakeside had an 18% increase in attendance
Ninety-seven
percent of girls
participated in at
least one outdoor
program in Girl
Scouts during the
school year.

Ban Bossy
GSWNY Ban’s Bossy to Show Girls They Can Lead!
Girl Scouts embarked on a campaign called “Ban Bossy” to help show girls they can lead, whether at home, at work, or at school. National personalities have endorsed the Ban Bossy campaign,
including Beyoncé, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, actress Jane Lynch, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. When a boy asserts himself, he is called a leader, but if a girl
does the same, she is often called “bossy.” This means next time she is less likely to speak up. It is probable
her confidence level will drop and she will feel discouraged from leading in the future.
In Western New York, troops began offering girls the Ban Bossy Patch Program, which aims to show girls
how they can resolve conflicts with confidence in their own lives. Andrea Rock, Cristina Carey, and Julie
Brubaker, all of Troop 60570 in Irondequoit, took six girls from various troops through the Ban Bossy Patch
Program at the Rochester Service Center. The program helped girls learn how to manage conflict using
I-statements, a formula that encourages girls to address conflicts or challenging situations. The formula is:
“When you ____ (share what the other person has done), I feel ___ (share how that makes you feel) because
___ (share why it makes you feel that way). For example, “When you call me names, I feel sad and hurt because I care about what you think about me.” This formula helped girls speak directly about their feelings.
As part of the activity, leaders and
girls participated in role playing and
talked about situations they are facing or have faced in their own lives.
Hippie Pandas
Girl Scouts of Western New York FIRST
Robotic Lego League (FLL) Team called
The Hippie Pandas 776 won the 2014 Fin
ger Lakes Regional Champion’s Award for
“The Hippie Panda Classroom Playlist” and
their NXT Lego Robot.
The award is based on three aspects
of the FIRST program: robot technical
design/performance, research project,
and core values. The 2014 theme was
“World Class, Learning Unleashed.” The
team researched, “How we could improve
the way teachers learn to use music in the
classroom to improve student’s performance and behavior.” For the solution, they
designed a website that synergizes their Spotify playlists which has music that meet
a specific criteria to address a given classroom issue like “focus and memorization
or seatwork and creativity.” This innovative solution is called “The Hippie Pandas
Classroom Playlist.”
