The Phoenix family of advanced drum imagesetters
Product and
Technology
Overview
Introducing Phoenix™
In the last decade, Agfa has sold more imagesetters than any other
company in the world. Our AccuSet, SelectSet, and SelectSet Avantra
families of imagesetters set new standards for quality, performance,
value, and reliability. Now this history of innovation continues with
the next generation of imagesetters — Agfa Phoenix.
Phoenix is a family of mid-sized, highproductivity internal drum imagesetters
that takes imagesetting to new levels of speed,
productivity, ease of use, and precision. And
more importantly, it’s designed to accelerate
the entire printing process.

Designed for today’s printers
The printing market has shifted from long-run,
web-based printing of mass-market materials to
shorter runs of more targeted print jobs created
on smaller presses. Shorter press runs, tighter
deadlines, and faster turnaround requirements
all demand greater efficiency from key prepress
steps, such as imaging and platemaking. This
new, more demanding market requires an
imagesetter that is designed to meet the specific
workflow and pressroom requirements of
today’s printers. In short, it needs Phoenix.
The Phoenix family offers you a range of
choices designed to meet your needs — whether
you are a commercial or packaging and label
printer, newspaper, service provider, or in-plant
operation. But no matter what model you
choose, you benefit from more than twenty-five
major technology advancements incorporated
in every Phoenix system.
Meet the Phoenix family
Phoenix is available in three models — Phoenix 2000, Phoenix 2250, and Phoenix News. While
these systems have different formats, all share the key attributes that are the hallmark of the
Phoenix family — exceptional integration with the printing workflow, fast throughput, remarkable
ease of use, precision imaging, and fail-safe reliability. Phoenix News is designed from the ground

Phoenix combines new innovations…
With field-proven technology
When designing Phoenix, our engineers
combined field-proven technology and
new, innovative features that you won’t
find on any other imagesetter. From the first
glance, you’ll know Phoenix is different. It’s a
compact system designed to fit into even the
most space-challenged operations. Phoenix is a
very user-friendly system. For example, processed
media is delivered at the top, enabling the
operator to perform all major operations right
from the front of the system. The special Media
Profiles capability of the Phoenix 2000 and
Phoenix 2250 let you push a button to choose
the punch configuration and media length that
precisely match the film or plate requirements
of different presses. And the new design of the
online processor keeps it tightly integrated
with all Phoenix imagesetters.
At the same time, Phoenix incorporates
proven design features that are already in use
at thousands of sites worldwide. For example,
Agfa has spent more than 1.5 million engineering
man hours perfecting the internal drum design.
The Phoenix drum is unique in its design and
manufacturing. It’s constructed of cast aluminum
that is finely shaped, finished to exacting
tolerances, and coated with Teflon for smooth
plate motion. With this field-proven design
at Phoenix’s core, you can be assured of the
ultimate in performance — now and far into
the future. Inside the drum, our patented
IntelliTrack™ transport system provides the
precise motion required for accurate imaging.
The result? Phoenix means faster imaging
speeds, reduced errors, lower labor costs,
and the ability to make a seamless interface
with the pressroom.

Phoenix brings you speed, precision,
automation, and reliability
When creating Phoenix, we listened long and hard to what our
customers told us they wanted in the ideal imagesetter. They said
they wanted imagesetting to be a fully automatic process that
provided the fastest throughput possible. They wanted a reliable
system that ran with little or no attention. And they wanted to be
able to create plate-ready film and press-ready Setprint Plus plates.
It was with these goals in mind that we designed Phoenix —
an imagesetting solution for the 21st century.
Think of Phoenix as the next generation
of imagesetting — a solution designed to
meet the tight deadlines and tight budgets
of prepress and printing professionals. We
will continue to bring new enhancements and
features to the Phoenix family. So when you
buy Phoenix, you’re buying an imagesetter
with a long future of innovation ahead.
New efficiency for your operation
Phoenix means more than exciting technological
enhancements. It represents a sound business
investment as well — one that will enable your
operation to bring new efficiency and advanced
capabilities to imagesetting. It brings you significantly more performance and capabilities than
similarly priced solutions. And its rock-solid
reliability ensures successful operation without
costly downtime or operator intervention.
You may own one imagesetter or dozens. You
may currently be using a capstan imagesetter
and need the speed and precision quality that
only drum imagesetting can provide. You may
have years of experience with imagesetting. Or
you may be buying your first imagesetter. In any
case, the time is right to choose Agfa Phoenix.
4
The exceptional design of Phoenix is clear in the small details. For
example, we completely redesigned the input and output cassettes
to ensure maximum ease of use and seamless integration with the
Phoenix engine.
The Phoenix 2000 and Phoenix 2250 offer different formats, but
both models contain the same innovative technology that is the
hallmark of the Phoenix family. Outside, Phoenix is remarkably
compact and ergonomically designed. Inside, the system is
engineered for maximum speed, precision, and reliability.
Notice how the innovative smaller drum enables precision imaging
while using space efficiently. The Phoenix drum design does away
with vacuum systems, which slow throughput and introduce dust
and airflow into the system. Instead, the Teflon-coated drum is
precisely engineered to hold the media tight against the drum
surface during imaging.
Above the drum, you see Phoenix’s innovative buffer system, which
enables multiple jobs to continue through the system in parallel.
This smart design saves you time and keeps throughput at the
fastest levels.
Every Phoenix system features Agfa’s patented IntelliTrack transport mechanism, which moves the optical system smoothly and
accurately over magnetic rails. Phoenix systems incorporate Agfa
FlexMedia which automatically optimizes the system for different
media widths and thicknesses. So with Phoenix, you get precision
imaging and accurate pixel placement in every job.
Below the drum, you can see how Phoenix’s electronics are isolated
in one area of the system, reducing heat in the imaging area and
enabling quick service. Throughout the system, Phoenix’s modular
design means that subsystems and components can be quickly
replaced if necessary, maximizing availability.
Phoenix features an innovative buffer system that keeps the engine working
steadily. Multiple jobs flow through the system without delay, speeding
overall throughput.
The Phoenix spin motor moves at a fast 68,000 rpms, enabling the fastest
imaging speeds in the industry.

Integrating imagesetting with the press
In the past, imagesetting was viewed as a separate operation from the pressroom. Many steps
separated the imagesetter and the press — stripping, masking, plate exposure and development, bending and notching, and many more. Now Phoenix brings imagesetting closer to
the press by providing plate-ready films — or press-ready Setprint® Plus polyester plates.

Phoenix is an imagesetter designed with printers
firmly in mind, and it eliminates many of the
steps that are required to go from film to the
press. It integrates imagesetting with printing
more closely than ever before. Moreover,
Phoenix is tuned for the applications that are
important to you, ensuring that final films are a
perfect match with your press format, punch
requirements, contact frame, and more. The
result? Workflow automation that saves time
and enables you to boost profitability.
6
Phoenix streamlines your entire workflow by providing plate-ready films or
press-ready films.
A choice of formats
Phoenix offers different formats that enable
you to output the film format that most closely
matches your press. The Phoenix 2000’s 20 x 27"/
50,8 x 68,6 cm format is appropriate for small
4-up applications. The Phoenix 2250’s 22.5 x
29.375"/57,2 x 74,6 cm format is right for the
standard 50 x 70 cm format and mid-sized 4-up
sheetfed presses. And Phoenix News offers a 19"
width and 18.7x 27"/47,5 x 68,6 cm image area
that covers all 18.1" broadsheet applications.
Punch flexibility for plate-ready film
What makes film truly plate-ready? One key
element is the punch configuration. Given the
number of configurations used in the printing
industry, it’s difficult to ensure that film will
have the punch data required for plating.
Sites with multiple presses further complicate
the challenge, since one imagesetter may be
outputting film for several different presses.
Phoenix 2000 and Phoenix 2250 streamline
and automate workflow by offering multiple
long-side punch configurations. These systems
offer a unique Media Profiles capability that
lets you keep as many as six separate punch
configurations online, available at the touch
of a button on the user control screen. The
Phoenix 2000 offers precision side punching
on the 27" (68,6 cm) dimension, while the
Phoenix 2250 provides punching on the
29.375"(74,6cm) side. Both offer the side punch
flexibility that ensures that your film will match
your press format.
The punch flexibility of the Phoenix family lets
you support multiple workflows, outputting
film or plates for many presses — all with the
same high-quality imagesetter. Your operation
may include many workflows, depending on
the job and the press it will be running on. With
Phoenix, you can adapt your film or plates for
different presses or production workflows right
at the user control panel — adjusting the punch
configuration to work the way you want to.

Plates and film cut to match your needs
Complete integration with the press means plate-ready films or press-ready plates. With
Phoenix 2000 and Phoenix 2250, you can cut media to match your specific press format.
This capability is particularly important when using Phoenix 2250 to output Setprint Plus
polyester plates. Media Profiles allow you to cut media — film or plate material — to match
your press format.
When setting up the Media Profiles you want online, you can choose the length you want
your film or polyester plate material to be — as well as the specific punch configuration. For
example, you may have two presses with the same width and punch configuration, but
with different length requirements. You would simply set up separate Media Profiles,
defining the width, media thickness, and length. The Media Profiles can even have the
same names as your presses, making it simple to select the right configuration for a
specific press — right from the control panel.
Phoenix lets you output plate-ready films and press-ready plates,
eliminating many of the time-consuming steps between imagesetting and the press. In each case, the final media is ready for
use, without requiring subsequent film stripping for film, or
notching for plates.
10
Phoenix can serve as a computer-toplate solution by outputting Setprint
Plus polyester plates that are ready
for your press.
Choice of media
CTP capabilities
With Phoenix, you can choose the media that
best suits your workflow — including a range
of film and polyester Setprint Plus material. When
you choose film, you can be sure it’s ready for
the press after exposure, since Phoenix automatically exposes all edge areas, eliminating
the need for subsequent stripping.
When you choose Phoenix, you can output
Setprint Plus plates as well as film, enabling
you to establish an initial computer-to-plate
workflow. With Setprint Plus, you can have a
complete set of press-ready plates in under
five minutes. Setprint Plus is an ideal solution
for 4-color jobs of up to 15,000 impressions.
And no imagesetter outputs Setprint Plus
more efficiently than Phoenix — eliminating
the need for notching.
Phoenix’s ability to cut media to a specific
length is particularly useful in computerto-plate applications. This “cut-to-length”
capability ensures that when you output
Setprint Plus polyester plate material, it will
precisely match the format of your press.
The Phoenix Family of Advanced Drum Imagesetters
11
Designed to make imagesetting easy
You want imagesetting to be simple, not a science. That’s why Phoenix includes many features
aimed at turning the complicated imagesetting process into a push-button operation that
does not require a great deal of prepress expertise to perform. When you get down to the
basics, an imagesetter is an output device. It outputs film or polyester plates. And as such,
it must make it easy for all users to perform this important activity. Phoenix is just such an
imagesetter. It benefits from Agfa’s ongoing enhancements to the ergonomics of imagesetting.
And it includes key features that make imagesetting an easy, intuitive process.
12
A system designed to take up less space
Films start and finish at the same place
For most prepress and printing operations,
space is at a premium. Thanks to its efficient
engineering and the careful integration of
the imagesetter engine and online processor,
Phoenix is a remarkably compact system.
Reducing the size of the imagesetter required
careful re-engineering of the drum, optical
system, and media path. The result is a compact
imagesetter that operates at maximum efficiency.
Plus, its small scale makes Phoenix inherently
easier to use — and easier to place within a
crowded prepress or printing operation.
In the past, many imagesetters delivered final
films into a basket at the far end of the online
processor. This approach required users to
leave the front of the system — where all the
controls are located — to retrieve film. Phoenix
changes all that. Final films come out of the
top of the system and are carefully stacked in
a convenient, easy-to-reach receiving area.
Phoenix features input and output cassettes
that are easy to handle and load, ensuring
easy use by a wide range of operators. The
input cassette integrates seamlessly with
the system, ensuring smooth loading of all
media into the drum. The buffer can be
removed and replaced with an output
cassette for offline operation.
An intuitive user interface
Phoenix’s intuitive, icon-driven user interface
is remarkably easy to use and gives operators a
wealth of information. For example, Phoenix
makes it easy to visually track the progress of
jobs through the system via animated icons.
Phoenix gives you a dynamic update of the
progress of each job — not just a “start” and
“complete” indication. And it gives operators
less familiar with the system an update without
having to consult the manual. In short, the
push-button simplicity of Phoenix makes other
imagesetters look unnecessarily complex.
This interface also puts many options — such as
selecting a Media Profile — at the user’s fingertips. In the past, these capabilities might have
been controlled at a separate workstation. Phoenix
moves control to where you want it — at the
front of the imagesetter. But if you choose to
control jobs from the workstation, Phoenix lets
you work this way too. It’s a flexible system
designed to simplify all aspects of imagesetting.
Now Phoenix brings control of the processor to
the same user interface that controls the imagesetter. Combining imaging and processing at
the same interface recognizes a simple fact —
both are part of the same process. Now
Phoenix brings a new level of simplicity
to the user interface.
Integrating processing
Simplified media handling
In the past, processors often had their own
control panel, requiring operators to monitor
both the imagesetter and the online processor.
Loading and unloading media cassettes is
greatly simplified by Phoenix. The cassette is
simpler to lift and load into the system, and
includes many improvements suggested by
our customers. Input and take-up cassettes are
both located in the front of the system for
maximum convenience. And both cassettes
include many innovations aimed at making
handling easy for all operators.
Phoenix’s touch-screen control panel serves
as a centralized resource for monitoring jobs,
selecting Media Profiles, and much more.
While the panel brings you a wide range
of information, its clear, icon-driven design
makes it easy for all operators to use.
The Phoenix Family of Advanced Drum Imagesetters
13
Fast throughput for higher profitability
Imagesetting speed means more than a fast
spin motor. It means the ability to output highquality films quickly and efficiently — with as
little operator involvement as possible. With
Phoenix, you can have plate-ready films in
minutes. In fact, the Phoenix 2000 lets you
output up to 80 flats per hour at 1200 dpi. But
more importantly, outputting these high-quality
films requires less of your time and attention.
Advanced internal drum design
Our internal drum design offers a field-tested,
user-approved, and totally reliable approach to
imagesetting. The debates and claims are over,
and the market has spoken loudly and clearly,
adopting internal drum systems as the de facto
industry standard for precise, predictable imagesetting. Now Phoenix perfects drum imagesetting
with new innovations that optimize engine
speed and system throughput.
A small drum for faster imaging speeds
Once transported into the drum, the media
is positioned inside a full 260 degrees of the
drum surface — sliding smoothly along the
Teflon-coated drum. This approach enables the
media to fit snugly against the drum without
resorting to a vacuum system, which introduces
additional time-consuming steps in the imagesetting sequence. With Phoenix, the system
never has to wait for the vacuum to engage and
come up to full pressure, or to bleed off vacuum
pressure after exposure is complete.
Innovative rotating buffer system
All Phoenix online systems use a patented rotating
buffer that enables jobs to proceed in parallel
through the process of film loading, exposure,
and processing. So while one job is processing,
another can be imaging, and a third can be
loading. This multi-stage concept eliminates
the stops and starts of a traditional linear process.
And it speeds throughput significantly, enabling
you to get maximum throughput from your
Phoenix imagesetter. Moreover, the buffer
integrates smoothly with the Phoenix online
processor, ensuring a smooth flow of jobs
through the system.
A 68,000 rpm spin motor
Phoenix imagesetters use a lightweight mirror
manufactured of beryllium. This smaller, lighter
mirror is turned by a fast 68,000 rpm spin motor.
The result is faster output. With these fast, reliable
components at the core of its imaging system,
Phoenix moves very fast. And as a side benefit,
the imaging system generates less heat — the
enemy of high-quality imagesetting.
Fast throughput begins in the Phoenix 2000’s small, Teflon-coated
drum, which enables fast, precise media loading without requiring
a time-consuming vacuum system. Along the near edge of the drum
you can see the five-element movable punch system, controlled from
the user control panel via use-definable Media Profiles.
14
An integrated engine and online processor
Phoenix features an advanced online processor
designed specifically to integrate seamlessly with
Phoenix. The Phoenix imagesetter and processor
work together to ensure accurate, fast imaging
and processing of a wide range of photographic
material — including film, paper, and plate material.
Imagesetting should be a one-step operation — without adding a second stage for media
processing. When you look at Phoenix, you see one compact system — not an imagesetter
with an online processor behind it. Phoenix thoroughly integrates the processor and imagesetter engine. This new processor uses intelligent processing for accurate replenishment,
chemistry reduction, and improved ecology. Its cascade wash system reduces water
consumption, and offers you the option of using recirculated water, allowing you to
create a no-waste operation.
The careful integration of Phoenix and its online
processor ensures the fastest throughput. Phoenix
features an integrated bridge that links the imagesetting engine with the online processor like never
before. It establishes a clear, reliable path for media
to follow throughout the system — from precision
loading in the drum to final output. Moreover,
jobs continue in parallel through Phoenix. So
when one piece of media is loading, another
can be in the special rotating buffer, and a
final job can be processing.
The Phoenix Family of Advanced Drum Imagesetters
15
Precision imaging for maximum throughput
In the past, imagesetters were differentiated by the maximum resolutions they allowed
you to achieve. The more relevant point is that your imagesetter should provide the level
of quality you need to do the type of jobs you do as efficiently as possible. Since resolution
affects performance, you need a system that balances the right resolution with the highest
level of throughput. Phoenix allows you to achieve high precision, predictable quality, and
accurate registration with every film or polyester plate you create.
Electronics for maximum control
Dust immunity
Phoenix imagesetters include sophisticated
electronics that control the servo motors that
are behind the entire imagesetting process.
These electronics ensure the precision control
necessary for advanced, high-quality imagesetting. Moreover, they ensure the consistent
results that only a fine-tuned, carefully controlled
imagesetter such as Phoenix can deliver.
Phoenix is engineered to eliminate much of
the air flow that can introduce particles and
other potentially image-detracting elements
into the system. Together with the Phoenix
HEPA filter system means that Phoenix users
will encounter fewer artifacts and plate redos.
Advanced screening solutions
Phoenix offers Agfa Balanced Screening, a
screening solution that provides the resolution
and proven accuracy you need. Phoenix provides
consistently high-quality screening over the full
film or polyester plate. The result is an advanced
approach to screening—and precise results.
Careful processing and media handling
The Phoenix system’s new online processor
is built around a design that protects the film
emulsion during processing. Processed films
are delivered carefully and conveniently to the
top of the system — dry and ready to use.
Agfa Balanced Screening features
“tight” rosettes with consistent,
well-formed patterns of cyan,
magenta, yellow, and black dots.
In a dot-centered rosette, the black
dot in the rosette center is subject
to dot gain on press. But the open
centers of clear-centered Agfa
Balanced Screening rosettes
preserve shadow details.
16
Resolutions that match popular applications
Phoenix 2000, Phoenix 2250, and Phoenix News all output film at 1200, 1800, 2400, and
3000 dpi, enabling the level of quality appropriate for most four-up applications. Phoenix News
also supports 1016 dpi for faster imaging and additional facsimile resolutions appropriate
for the newspaper market — from 1000 to 1056 dpi in 2 dpi increments. All Phoenix systems
output up to 200 lpi. The result? Quality film and polyester plates that give you the
accuracy and resolution you need on press.
The Phoenix Family of Advanced Drum Imagesetters
Agfa’s patented IntelliTrack transport
system is one of the key technological
advances that enables Phoenix to
achieve such precise results and high
repeatability. First implemented in
Agfa’s SelectSet Avantra imagesetters,
IntelliTrack is a sophisticated slide
mechanism built on precision rails
that run the length of the drum.
IntelliTrack is the first self-propelled,
direct-drive carriage in the industry.
The carriage is controlled by precise
encoders that constantly send the
optical system’s position to an
advanced digital signal process.
IntelliTrack’s proven, high-precision
approach to moving the optical system
marks a major improvement over the
leadscrew-based systems used by
most capstan imagesetters — which
wear over time, resulting in banding,
density variations, and other artifacts.
17

system. It runs on standard hardware platforms,
and uses standard files and open interfaces. In
short, IntelliNet NewsFlow coordinates and
monitors the entire newspaper production
workflow — from automatic management
of page elements to proofing to page
output to storage.
IntelliNet establishes a smooth
workflow throughout a newspaper
operation, seamlessly guiding
pages through the production
process and ensuring accurate
output to multiple systems.
The Phoenix Family of Advanced Drum Imagesetters
19
A reliable, productive workflow
Reliability means more than great results. It means getting the same great results shift after
shift, year after year. Phoenix is the result of an unprecedented design effort and constant,
rigorous testing. So you can be sure that it represents the most reliable system on the market
today. Film imagesetting demands precision and reliability. Phoenix excels in these areas —
providing exceptional results and reliability.
Modular design
Odyssey support
Phoenix is a modular system designed to enable
quick replacement or upgrade of major systems
and subsystems. For example, the optical
assembly can be removed and replaced in a
matter of minutes. And key electrical components are designed for “plug and play” convenience. The result is a reliable imagesetter built
for maximum availability now — and use long
into the future.
Odyssey — Agfa’s interactive service, and
support terminal — allows service technicians
to conduct upgrades and diagnostics remotely.
This innovative support solution is designed
to provide the fastest service response time
possible for Phoenix, saving you time and
money. Odyssey includes full-duplex, interactive audio and video transmission capabilities,
using a portable video camera to provide visual
troubleshooting capability. With Odyssey, you’ll
feel as if you have an expert service technician
on-site 24 hours a day.
Integrated processor design
Imagesetters that are not fully integrated
with processors can introduce opportunities for
errors. Phoenix provides the tightest integration
possible between the imagesetter and online
processor. In fact, the entire system functions
as one, with all controls and functions handled
from the front of the Phoenix imagesetter.
20
Plus, Phoenix is backed by the largest support
organization in the graphic arts industry. Our
experience with imagesetters is unmatched in
the industry, ensuring quick, decisive response
to any issue that may arise.

Some manufacturers consider an imagesetter to be a complete
output solution. At Agfa, we know that you need more. We
