The Most Holy Trinity
Saint John Eudes
May 31, 2015
FR. GÉRARD’S CORNER
Today’s scriptures present the Trinity less as a doctrine and more as the revelation of God’s deepening personal relationship with us. (For a doctrinal summary, see the Preface of the mystery of the
Most Holy Trinity.) In the Old Testament, Moses marvels at God’s initiative and intimacy: “Did anything so great ever happen before? Did a people ever hear God’s voice and live? Did any god ever
take a nation for himself?”
For Paul, the Spirit of adoption infinitely deepens that intimacy. Deuteronomy’s “Lord your God” becomes our “Abba, Father,” and we “children, heirs of God, joint heirs with Christ.”
The “Great Commission” begins by presenting the not-so-great church. Far from glossing over the disciples’ weakness,
Matthew almost emphasizes it: “The eleven disciples went to Galilee.” There used to be twelve. But how disappointing
even this “faithful remnant:” “when they saw Jesus, they worshiped, but they doubted.” Unlike Sinai and Tabor, the
“Mountain of the Great Commission” remains nameless, not a pilgrimage destination but a place of departure. Jesus’
church must be forever (1) on the move—“Go,” (2) with work to do—“make disciples,” (3) far from the community’s place
of origin—“of all nations,” (4) blending worship—“baptizing”—with witnessing—“teaching” (5) boldly and bravely—not
simply what worldly powers sense as “common ground” but the gospel’s counter-cultural truths—“all I have commanded
you.” But Matthew matches daunting challenge with comforting assurance. Matthew’s Gospel began with Advent’s angel
naming Jesus “Emmanuel, God-with-us,” and Jesus’ last words promise, “I am with you always.”

DID YOU KNOW?
Preventing child abuse is everyone’s
responsibility. . .
It is every adult’s moral responsibility to protect
possible victims by reporting suspected abuse
or neglect to the responsible authorities. Sexual abuse of
minors is a pervasive, societal problem, and only rigorous
and sustained efforts by all adults in every segment of
society can help to protect children and youth. The State
of California’s Office of Child Abuse Prevention website
contains helpful information about how to report abusive
behavior and provides contact information of local authorities:
http://www.childsworld.ca.gov/PG2289.htm.
