Welcome from the PSC Co-presidents,
Susan Foster and Virginia Unseld
Welcome to the 2015 Pastel Society of Colorado (PSC) Mile High International
Show (MHIS). We are thrilled to present this 11th annual exhibit and sale which
showcases the paintings of many of the finest pastel artists in the world.
We would like to extend our gratitude to our tireless co-chairs Susan McKelvy and
Scott Leckrone who have guided all aspects of this event for over a year of planning
and execution. You will find their hard work evident as you view this exhibit.
Liz Haywood-Sullivan was the juror and judge for this event and did a remarkable
job selecting the paintings from a field of about 400 excellent entries. We thank her
for taking time out from her painting and work as the President of the International
Association of Pastel Societies to share her talents with PSC.
We are so appreciative of the staff at Denver Public Library for generously sharing
expertise and again hosting this important event in their beautiful gallery.
The sponsors listed in this catalogue are critical in providing merchandise and cash
awards to our winners. We are very grateful for their generosity. Please thank them
when you patronize their business.
The PSC is celebrating its 21st year. The mission of the PSC is to enlighten and
educate the public about art using pastel as the medium. In promotion of this
goal, the PSC actively offers members and the community shows, workshops,
demonstrations, and lectures. In addition to this beautiful exhibit, pastel artists
from the PSC will offer painting demonstrations at various times throughout
the show. We hope you will return to watch our artists in action. Please visit our
website (www.pastelsocietyofcolorado.org) for dates and times of these and other
events sponsored by the PSC throughout the year, including paintouts, painting
demonstrations, and other pastel shows. Your membership in our organization is,
of course, most welcome.
An event of this magnitude could not happen without the work of many volunteers.
We wish to extend special thanks to Corey Hartman at Further Frames, Sandy
Marvin, Mike Ray, Diane Edwards, Jeannette Stutzman, Sally DavidsonMarovich, Dawn Buckingham-Goldsmith, Elizabeth Mowry, Ivadell Marie, Jeanie
Schlump, John Haile, Dennis Rhoades, Lorrie Harkness, Cathy Van Berg, Kathy
Imel, Gail Posner, Mary Plath-Rice, and Terry and Marie Ludwig.
Enjoy the show!
Susan and Virginia
Our Juror & Judge,
Liz Haywood-Sullivan
Liz Haywood-Sullivan is a
traditional representational artist
specializing in pastel landscapes.
“The Pastel Society of Colorado’s
Mile High International Show is
an annual highlight in the calendar
of the pastel world. This show is no
exception with paintings that are
beautiful, strong and creative. It
was an honor to have been chosen
to be your juror and judge. I was very impressed with not only the quantity but
the quality of the work submitted. The pastel medium seems to be growing in
popularity and every show I see the bar continues to rise. As such it was quite
difficult to make my final selections from all the fine paintings submitted. To those
who did not make the cut please keep trying, do not let this deter you. And my
congratulations to those who were selected - your work stood out compositionally,
in content and in execution. The selected artworks are all excellent representatives
of the pastel medium and will make a spectacular show hanging together.”
Liz Haywood-Sullivan
She is the President of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) and
serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Pastel Journal. She holds Signature
Memberships in the Pastel Society of America, the Connecticut Pastel Society, and
the Pastel Painter’s Society of Cape Cod. She has also earned membership in the
Academic Artists Association, the Salmagundi Club of New York City, and the
IAPS Master’s Circle. Her award-winning paintings are included in private and
corporate collections worldwide.
Dedicated to education in the arts, Liz conducts workshops on pastel painting
and the business of art, and is a sought after judge. Her work has been profiled
in The Pastel Journal, American Artist Magazine, The Artist’s Magazine,
Southwest Art Magazine, and American Art Collector Magazines. In 2013, her
book Painting Brilliant Skies and Water in Pastel was published by Northlight
Books. Her paintings are represented by the Vose Galleries of Boston, the oldest
gallery in the US. Her current schedule includes teaching workshops nationally
and internationally along with judging and demonstrating for numerous pastel
societies and art organizations.

Opportunity!
The 2015 Mile High International Pastel Exhibition is a special opportunity. First,
it is a chance for the pastel artists entering paintings into the competition to get an
opinion on the artistic merit of their work from a nationally-acknowledged artist and
juror. Most artists paint solo in their studios or en plein air, doing a concentrated and
complicated dance at their easels. They weigh the elements of strong painting, such as
composition, values, lines, colors, and the application of pastels to the board or paper. They are inspired by many different subjects and styles. The paintings presented in this
catalog are the results of each artist’s unique passion and response to the tactile quality
and immediate color application of pastels.
Secondly, this show is an opportunity for our juror and judge, Liz Haywood-Sullivan,
to select paintings for the show that reflect her vision of the best and most intriguing
paintings from all the submissions. This was a daunting task!
Thirdly, people viewing the exhibition resulting from her choices, have an opportunity to
engage their senses and preferences for the designs in the myriad pastel paintings presented.
We hope you will join us at the opening reception for the 2015 Mile High
International Exhibition, or stop by to see the beautiful paintings on display between
July 12 and September 25, 2015. As all work is for sale, it may, perhaps, provide an
opportunity for you to fall in love with a special painting that will become part of
your personal collection.
The Pastel Society of Colorado proudly embraces this opportunity to present the
efforts of many artists from Colorado and across the United States to visitors to the
Denver Public Library’s (DPL) 7th Floor Gallery. It is the dedicated efforts of the
artists, our judge, the DPL staff, our award sponsors, and the support of our society’s
volunteers that makes the work of organizing this show so satisfying. We thank them
all and proudly present the 2015 Mile High International Pastel Exhibition as an
opportunity fulfilled.
