organization that saves lives.”
Patti Glass
Wayside Waifs
President Patti Glass
has announced her
retirement after more
than six years as the
top dog of Kansas
City area’s largest pet
adoption center.
A search is underway to
find Glass’ successor.
Glass will remain
with Wayside Waifs
until the Board of
Directors names her
replacement.
“I am so proud
to have had the
privilege of being
part of Wayside
Waifs. It is truly an
extraordinary organization that saves lives and
gives homeless, abandoned and abused animals
a second chance,” said Glass. “All of the Board
members and staff members share such a deep
commitment to the cause and to making Wayside
all that it can be for the animals and the people
who need us. Together, we have built Wayside into
the strong, vital organization that it is today. I feel
very fortunate to be able to end my career with
such an organization.”
Under Glass’ direction, Wayside Waifs has doubled
the number of annual animal adoptions, and
vastly improved the quality of animal care. The
organization is now recognized nationally as one of
the country’s premier “no kill” animal shelters.
Patti Glass will not be a stranger to Wayside Waifs.
She plans to become a Wayside volunteer.
“Hot Tails” Champion
Here are just a few of the other
milestones Wayside Waifs achieved
through Patti Glass’ leadership:
• Wayside Waifs’ created a board
restricted fund which will provide financial
support for the organization in perpetuity.
• The volunteer program has become one
of the most popular in Kansas City.
• The foster care program provides
personalized in-home care to pets before
they are available for adoption.
• “No More Bullies” humane education
program was launched to teach K.C.
area students to respect the rights of
others, including pets.
• waysidewaifs.org is now the
organization’s most powerful marketing
tool, and most effective way to showcase
hundreds of adoptable animals.
• Wayside Waifs is on the cutting edge of
the social media revolution with more
than 4,000 Facebook fans and 2,500
Twitter followers.
• Wayside Waifs’ Pet Memorial Services
has expanded through a new targeted
marketing campaign aimed at raising
awareness about the burial and
cremation services available for pet
owners.
• Significant strides have been made in
building coalitions with the animal welfare
community with a goal of providing better
care for the animals and enhanced
services to the public.
Bailey Allen
Bailey Allen, a 13-year-old yellow lab, is the reigning champion of
Wayside Waifs’ first annual Hot Tails of Kansas City competition. Bailey
and his human, former Kansas Senator Barbara Allen, raised $10,000
for his friends at Wayside Waifs. As the Hot Tails champ, Bailey will be
featured in the 2011 Wayside Waifs calendar, on the homepage of the
Wayside Waifs website and will receive special recognition at our
upcoming Fur Ball. Best of all, Bailey has BRAGGING RIGHTS to
the “Hottest Tail in KC!” If you think your pet is hot stuff… and
can raise even more money than Bailey, we want to hear from
you! Contact Ashlee Parker at [email protected]
and your pet may be a contestant in the 2010 Hot Tails contest.

King of the House
Garth
Garth is quite a spoiled boy. He sleeps right next to our
bed every night in his own bed, lined with his favorite
blanket (Brookstone, no less!) and even has his own
room during the day. He has plenty of chew toys, bones,
etc. and of course, his favorite rope toy. He’s always
VERY happy to see us, jumping up almost shoulder level
with me when we get home. He spends most
evenings curled up with Nick or
me snuggling under a blanket.
He’s quite partial to lying on the
couch underneath one of his
blankets with it completely over
his head. He’s really gotten
used to the family and even
did pretty well at Thanksgiving
with the extended family
around. He’s pretty much the
greatest thing ever and we let
him know it every day. – Sara

Reluctant New Beginnings
“The health and
psychological
benefits of pet
ownership are worth it.”
Dr. James O’Keefe
Doctor’s Orders: Get a Dog
At age 80, a dog was the last thing
Leatrice O’Keefe thought she wanted.
She shunned the idea of the extra
responsibility, and did not want to be
tied down to a pet. Her son, Kansas
City cardiologist Dr. James O’Keefe,
refused to take no for an answer.
“I told her, ‘Mom, you need a dog,
you’re not walking as much, and
your mood doesn’t seem as good,’”
said Dr. O’Keefe.
Fully aware of his mother’s
reluctance, Dr. O’Keefe adopted
Henry from Wayside Waifs in October,
hoping the tiny Yorkshire Terrier/
Miniature Poodle mix would be a
perfect companion for
his mother.
Dr. James O’Keefe with his two
running companions, Brandon “The responsibilities and hassles
and Brady, both adopted from
of dog ownership may seem

inconvenient, but the health and
psychological benefits are worth it,” Dr. O’Keefe said.
Dr. O’Keefe says those health benefits include lowering
one’s blood pressure, weight control, improved fitness and a
reduction in depression.
A dog lover himself, Dr. O’Keefe routinely advises his patients
of all ages to adopt a dog from Wayside Waifs.
“The health benefits of pet ownership are potentially a very
important ally to good health and well-being in the long
run,” Dr. O’Keefe asserts. “There are more studies all the time
showing that people who own dogs tend to stay healthier.”
Armed with a written prescription from his mother’s own
cardiologist for “one cute dog to be taken for daily walks,” Dr.
O’Keefe showed up on his mother’s doorstep in North Dakota
with little Henry. Leatrice was not pleased.
“I was furious to tell you the truth. I was very unhappy,” said
Leatrice. “He knew I didn’t want a dog, I was very upset.”
Not wanting to completely ignore doctor’s orders, Leatrice
agreed to give Henry a chance.
“I’m making a big effort, and it’s working out pretty well,”
said Leatrice.
4
Henry now accompanies Leatrice on errands and
on her weekly trips to a nursing home where Leatrice
spends time as a volunteer.
“I just put him on his
leash, and we make
sure we visit with all
the pet lovers,” said
Leatrice. “That is
very good.”
Dr. O’Keefe gets a kick out of his mother’s daily
updates detailing her budding relationship with Henry.
“He gets her out walking all the time now, even during
the frigid North Dakota winter,” said Dr. O’Keefe.
“She’s not as lonely. As she enjoys her one beer
before dinner, she feeds Henry a little snack of cheese.
So it’s happy hour for both Henry and Leatrice. Mom
used to complain about being alone in the house.
Now, she is more comfortable snuggling into her home
with Henry after dinner. And it’s a real comfort to have
an adoring companion to make the long cold dark
winter nights more bearable.”
Henry is slowly winning Leatrice over. Dr O’Keefe says,
“A new dog is a big adjustment, especially for older
people. But the added effort and expenses are worth
it. I am absolutely certain that over the next decade,
there is nothing else in the world that will contribute
more to my mother’s emotional and physical wellbeing than Henry will.”
“He’s an
awfully cute
little dog,”
said
Leatrice.
“I’m
coming
to realize
that he
must be
good for
me. And he
certainly attracts
attention from my
friends and neighbors
around town.”

Bark Mitzvah
Lily’s 13th Birthday
Bob and Jackie Gershon wanted
to celebrate their cherished dog
Lily’s 13th birthday in a special
way. Instead of throwing her a
birthday party, the Gershons drew
on their culture for inspiration.
“At first it was kind of a joke. When
you turn 13 years old in the Jewish
religion you have a Bar Mitzvah.
Lily was a dog so we called it
a Bark Mitzvah.” Lily donned a
white Yarmulke and was treated
to a delicious doggy cake. “She
couldn’t say the prayer… that was
the only thing she couldn’t do,”
joked Bob.

New Changes to Dog Adoption Center
The Dog Adoption Center at Wayside Waifs is
getting a major facelift this month. Not only
will the changes dramatically improve the
look of the Dog Adoption Center, but most
importantly they will provide a more relaxed
and enriching environment for our dogs.
The galvanized steel wire kennels, which
have housed thousands of dogs over the
past ten years, are being replaced with new
kennels which feature glass door fronts and
colorful panels on the back side which will
reduce stress when dogs see other dogs
walking past.
The renovation project also includes
the addition of three large play/living
suites which will offer communal canine
housing and enable the public to see the
dogs experiencing a more “home-like”
Excitement Every Day
environment. New windows
are also being installed in the
meet-and-greet rooms inside
the dog adoption area.
“We are thrilled to be able
to enhance the lives of the
animals during their stay with
us and we are forever grateful
to our donors who help us fulfill
our mission as the Kansas City
Area’s Premier Pet Adoption
Center,” said Courtney Thomas,
Director of Operations at
Wayside Waifs.
Plans are now in the works to
New State-of-the-Art Kennels
give the Cat Adoption Center
a makeover. Donations are
needed to make this next project a reality.
