Getting started
Installation of the TI AFE 4404 EVM software
• Download the most recent version of the software on
http://www.ti.com/product/AFE4404/description
• Install the software and the USB drivers following the instruction on the development guide
http://www.ti.com/product/AFE4404/technicaldocuments
• Setting a starting configuration file:
• In your installation path go to the following directory: <Installation path>\Config Files
• Open the file High Level Config.ini with a text editor
• Create a backup file of High Level Config.ini (e.g., High Level Config_bckp.ini)
• Delete the instruction located beneath the [TX_STAGE] string in the original High Level
Config.ini
• Save the modified file and launch the AFE 44040EVM GUI after connecting the board (see
next slide)

Getting started - connections
• Connect the AFE 4404 EVM to your computer
through the USB cable
Pin 1 connection
• Connect the AFE 4404 Sensor Board to the
AFE 4404 EVM using the connector supplied
in the kit
• When connecting the boards, be sure that the
white patch on the connector is always
positioned close to PIN 1. PIN 1 can easily be
recognized because of its square shape (see
figure)

• Check that the green LED are on to confirm
that everything has been connected properly –
OSRAM Sensor Boards have no marked PIN
1, therefore a practical check is needed

Measurement tutorial
• After starting the AFE 4404 EVM GUI make sure that the board is connected to your PC and
communicating properly by checking the indicator situated at the bottom right of the GUI. The
indicator should be green and displaying the “HW connected” message

Go to the ADC Capture & Analysis tab
Select Single Plot Mode from the menu to visualize only the data relative to LED 1
Position the Sensor Board on your wrist as shown in the picture below
Start the measurement y clicking on the Capture button

For a quick estimation of the heart rate:
1. Right click on the cross button
on the bottom right of the graph
2. Uncheck the “Ignore Time
Stamp” option to visualize the
time scale in the graph
3. Select a short time period (e.g.,
4 s)
4. Evaluate the heart beat looking
at the period of the waveform
