If you can boil water, you can make a canine blue
plate special. Eggs, meat and veggies satisfy most
dogs. You just need a hot plate or fire pit.
Keep It Raw
Buy Fresh Cooked Food
Most lodgings and relatives will provide fridge
and freezer space. If you can’t access refrigeration or even an ice chest, go fresh. Stop at
grocers, butcher shops, farmer’s markets, farm
stands and even farms. Near a river? Go fish!
If you can’t cook, don’t give up. Most hotels offer eggs at breakfast. Delis sell cooked meat (purchase nitrite-free). Trader Joe’s sells hard-boiled
eggs by the bag, and even some mini-marts have
them.
Buy Pre-Made Raw
Take-Out or Eat Out
Look up your preferred brand online and use
the store locator to find vendors on the road.
Unavailable? Substitute another brand (but

Try road food for palatability. You don’t want to find yourself in an isolated
cabin with food your dog won’t eat.
Test road food for digestibility. Whatever you plan to feed on the road, start your dog on it at
home…otherwise, you’ll be making a lot of rest stops. And they won’t be very restful.
Pack grapefruit extract to sanitize raw meat and veggies.
Take ginger pills for motion sickness. This malady can befall the sturdiest hound, whether
traveling by plane, car, boat or train. Ginger is a natural remedy for your dog and you. It’s
available in pill form from Parma to Pahrump. Commercial remedies are also available, but
ask your vet about them before use. (Dramamine can make you and your dog sleepy… awkward if you’re about to climb the Matterhorn.)
Carry a package of freeze-dried raw for emergencies, even if it’s not on your basic menu.
Transport healthy treats, including dried pure meats and veggie treats. (Check the source,
too—are they from China?)
Bring handy wipes. Raw food is messier than kibble, and you don’t want to attract the
house detective with pools of blood.
Bring a stress-buster. A bully stick (grass-fed!) is great.

Pack Freeze-Dried Raw
If you don’t want to spend your time in Moscow (Russia or Idaho) at the butcher’s, rely on
freeze-dried raw. It’s lightweight, palatable and
reasonably healthy. It probably won’t attract
bears. Every brand is different, so note the variations: Pure meat? With veggies? Ground bone?
How much protein? Always read labels. For a
tasty twist, top freeze-dried with local fresh food,
cooked or raw.
Don’t Forget Supplements
Is your supplement perishable? Does it need refrigeration? If so, you need a different one while
traveling. Even if you don’t supplement at home,
do so on the road, since your dog’s food sources
will probably be less controllable. Pack multivitamins and calcium.
Water
Changing a dog’s tap water source may upset his
stomach, so bring a supply from home if possible.
(Easier with a trunk than with a backpack.) Or
buy bottled water on your trip. Montezuma’s
Revenge guarantees the wrong kind of vacation
blast.
When in Rome
Some local delicacies are fine for your dog. Just
make sure he experiences travel’s gastronomic
upside instead of gastrointestinal upset. In Paris, steak tartare is de rigeur. In Tokyo, sample
sashimi. Bon voyage!

forward to savoring regional specialties—
curry, anyone?—but your dog will do better on
his regular diet. He’ll find adventure in new
sights, sounds and smells, so there’s no need for

mean you’ll have to revert to kibble or wet food.

hen strays and surrendered dogs
show up at Los Angeles area animal
shelters, the processing includes
taking hurried “mug shots” that are posted on
blogs and websites. Often these photos capture
dogs at their worst—scruffy and scared and inside cages.
However, this isn’t the case any longer, thanks
to professional pet photographer Seth Casteel.
When he isn’t shooting photos for major magazines or clients, he heads to L.A. shelters with
his camera and volunteers to take personalityplus photos of dogs and cats in need of adoption.
Believing you only get one chance at making a
good first impression, Casteel is saving the lives
of companion animals, one camera click at a
time.

“I try to bring good energy to each photo session because I’ve found that shelter dogs read our
energy really well,” said Casteel. He happens to
also be the proud pet parent of two shelter rescues, Madison and Nala. “I go in and make sure
the shelter animals are relaxed, plus I bring treats
to convey that I am not a threat to them. I think
a lot of the dogs recognize that I am there for a
good reason—to help them.”
At last count, Casteel has photographed nearly 1,000 shelter animals and hopes his volunteer
efforts will inspire professional photographers in
other areas of the country.
“How a shelter pet looks in a photograph really can make all the difference in the world,”
he said.

O
f course Oregon is lush and beautiful, but most people also associate the state with
being windy and foggy. The coast is not the only place to play with Fido in Oregon,
however. Head inland to Loon Lake, and the pay off will be warmer temperatures, no
wind or fog and a mile of lakefront bliss. Some of the full-hookup RV sites are on the lakefront,
and most others are next to the beach and the marina. The marina includes a dock with boat
and waverunner rentals, so that visitors can cruise out on the water to enjoy the lake’s namesake
loons, who live there year-round. This natural lake also offers fishing for trout and largemouth
bass.
Dogs are free of charge when staying in the RV sites, and they must be leashed and picked
up after, but they are welcome to enjoy the beach and lake. An excellent benefit of the Loon
Lake Resort is that there are also six traditional motel rooms and one- and two-bedroom cabins
that are Fido-friendly for a small charge of $25 per stay. The cabins include a living room and
kitchen and free WiFi. There is a restaurant at the resort that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner,
as well as a shop.
Besides time spent enjoying the lake, there is a nearby 120-foot waterfall with pools for
swimming, and the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area offers a glimpse of this renowned native
species. The resort is closed December through March each year, but check the website to
find out when the annual Doggie Days festival will occur in the spring. It’s a must-not-miss

Every year in the late spring, we make a trek to the National Bernese Mountain Dog Specialty, where
we sell our Swiss imports to the hundreds of Swiss dog lovers and their dogs. This year, the show
happened to be in Portland, OR, which made for an interesting and scenic road trip.

After a scenic mountain drive down from the spectacular San Juan Mountains to the amazing desert
town of Moab, UT, we unloaded mid-afternoon at our first hotel: the River Canyon Lodge.
Min and Steve Wang have been the proprietors of the River Canyon Lodge since 2004 and have
made the lodge very Fido-friendly. They themselves are the proud owners of a golden retriever
named Cosmo and a Pekinese named Foo Foo Enrique, who are known on occasion to greet the
guests themselves! The hotel is conveniently located in downtown Moab, half of a block off Main
Street and within a short walk from a great Fido-friendly, grassy park. Dogs are allowed in 19 of
their standard rooms and suites, and all rooms come fully equipped with a fridge and microwave.

After a good seven-hour drive from Moab, we finally arrived at our destination in Idaho: Twin
Falls—Idaho’s third ranked pet-friendly city in the state. Upon entering the town, we traversed an
amazing bridge over the Snake River that spans a breathtaking gorge.
After taking some great early evening shots of the bridge, river and gorge, we drove to our hotel,
the Shilo Inn of Twin Falls. We felt like royalty as we checked into our roomy, handsomely renovated
suite, inclusive of wet bar, fridge and separate living area. The hotel is located not far from Interstate
84, and it is a great place to rest for a night or so during a long road trip. There is a grassy area around
the hotel that is the only grassy area nearby for the pups, as the hotel is located in an extended
parking lot of chain restaurants and stores. However, inside the hotel is spacious, bright, clean and
beautiful: an oasis in the middle of Midwest suburbia.

After a number of stops at historic landmarks and our longest drive yet, we arrived at the beautiful
Columbia Cliff Villas in scenic Hood River, OR—one of the world’s top windsurfing capitals and
base for many scenic day trips in the area.
The Columbia Cliff Villas were built as private one-, two-, and three-bedroom luxury holiday
condominiums. When the owners are not enjoying them, they are rented out by the Columbia Cliff
Villa Management Company. They all have large garages and magnificent kitchens with gas stoves, full
fridges, walnut cupboards, marble countertops, etc. They are richly furnished and spacious. They also
boast balconies with views of the Columbia Gorge Hotel Gardens and the Columbia River. The Villas
share the magnificent Fido-friendly gardens of the historic Columbia Gorge Hotel, as well as the hotel’s
fine amenities, such as dining in their award winning restaurant, relaxing in their classic “Valentino”
bar or pampering oneself in the hotel’s luxurious spa.

The Perrine Memorial Bridge over the Snake
River Canyon marks the northern entrance to
Twin Falls, Idaho. At 1,500 feet in length and
486 feet above the Snake River, when it was built
it was the highest bridge in the world! The bridge
and gorge at this spot continue their world-wide
fame as one of the best BASE jumping bridges in
the world.
Dining Tip The Fido-friendly, European-style
restaurant Café Doppio in downtown Hood
River, offers wonderful coffees, scrumptious cakes
and savory snacks from morning to night. It is the
place to sit, read, work or chat with one’s faithful
furry friend.
Portland, OR
The dog show took place over the course of a week during which we stayed at the beautiful Red Lion
Hotel at Jantzen Beach in Portland.
Our room was extremely quiet, newly decorated and had a large balcony that overlooked the
Columbia River. We also had a fridge and microwave, which always comes in handy when traveling
with pets and children.
All 47 Red Lion Hotels nationwide are pet-friendly and have no pet fee. Instead they have a
points program to entice pet owners to stay more often. For example, during the show we were
attending, they accommodated more than 1,200 large Bernese Mountain dogs and their people. The
Red Lion Jantzen Beach also had plenty of nice grassy areas for potty and play, including the grassy
banks of the Columbia River, which it adjoins.

Steamboat History
Historically, Steamboat Springs flourished as an agricultural center, and its cowboy heritage
thrived with it. Several legendary cowboys and outlaws passed through Steamboat, including
Butch Cassidy, Kit Carson and Jeff Bridger.
Olympian Billy Kidd put Steamboat Springs on the map when the former gold medal winner
moved there in 1970. He is still active in skiing and serves as Director of Skiing for the resort.

James Crawford is the father of Steamboat Springs, CO, having settled in
a cabin on Soda Creek in 1874. Instead of becoming “Crawfordville,” legend has it that the
town was named for the rhythmic chugging of a hot spring that disgorged mineral water 15
feet into the air. The medicinal springs brought the first settlers to the valley, and later the town
became an international ski jumping Mecca with the arrival of Norwegian champion Carl
Howelsen in 1913. Today outdoor enthusiasts and dog lovers don’t wait for the snow to fall to
make their way to Steamboat Springs.
In town, the Yampa River Trail system links Steamboat Springs with the surrounding mountain
area. The trails provide easy dog walking along the Yampa River and through city parks. More

Transportation Tip During our stay in
Portland, we had the pleasure of taking the
MAX light rail, as well as riding in “Radio
Taxis”—both of which are pet-friendly!
The Oregon Coast
After a week in Portland, we took a scenic drive
down Highway 101 along the scenic Oregon
Coast. We stopped in many quaint seaside
towns and beaches along the way to our hotel:
The Whaleshead Beach Resort just north of
Brookings and the California border.
We were given an enchanting holiday cottage
called Summit House at the top of a hill and
overlooking the rugged beauty of Whaleshead
Beach, one of the most stunning locations along
the Oregon Coast. Offshore there is a sea stack
that looks like the head of a whale. The sea
stack is cut with a rock channel, and when a
wave hits it, it spurts a spray that actually looks
like a whale spouting, hence the name.
Our cottage was tastefully decorated in a
nautical theme, had a fully equipped modern
kitchen, picture windows and a hot tub perched
on a cliff-side deck with breathtaking views

its mountain top privacy and to die for views
immediately gave us an overwhelming sense
of peace and relaxation. We could have easily
settled in for a week or month or more.
The Whaleshead Beach Resort has been
in the McNeely family since the late 1800s
when they initially used the land as a large
sheep ranch. The property, still owned by the
McNeely family, boasts individually decorated
Park Model Nor’ West Cottages with ocean,
creek or forest settings. It has its own access to
Whaleshead Beach via a 700-foot tunnel. Pets
are welcome in 18 of the 55 rental homes, or if
you have an RV, they have overnight RV space
rentals as well.
San Francisco
The next day we traveled south through the
great redwood forests and the extensive wineries
of northern California to eventually arrive at
the luxurious Serrano Hotel in downtown San
Francisco. The Serrano Hotel, once known as
Hotel California, is in a beautifully restored
17-story Spanish Revival building, just a short
walk from the bustling Union Square.
Both the lobby of the hotel and its 236
designer hotel rooms are lavishly designed with
large windows, plush bedding and the original
high ceilings, adorned with exotic Spanish and
Moroccan accents. The hotel was purchased
by the Kimpton group in 1999, adding to its
collection of 45 luxury boutique hotels. All
Kimpton Hotels are pet-friendly with no pet
fees.
Dining Tip Our choice for Fido-friendly
dining in San Francisco is the The North Beach
Italian Restaurant. Lorenzo Petroni founded the
restaurant some 30 years ago and claims that it
is the oldest Italian restaurant in North Beach
(the Little Italy of San Francisco). They have
delightful outdoor seating where you may dine
with your well-behaved pup on their delicious
home-cured prosciutto and sip fine Italian wines
from the Italian-style vineyards they established
almost 20 years ago in Sonoma, CA. They have
also imported Italian olive trees and serve the
best homemade olive oil I have ever tasted—
sprinkled of course with imported Sicilian Sea
Salt.
The North Beach restaurant is a mere half
block from Washington Square, a great place
to walk your dog before or after your gourmet
lunch or dinner. Lorenzo Petroni and his wife,
Maria, are avid animal lovers and have rescued
many dogs from the local humane societies over
the years.
Salt Lake City, UT
On the home stretch of our trip, we stayed at my
favorite Fido-friendly hotel in Salt Lake City:
the historic Hotel Monaco, which also belongs
to the pet-friendly Kimpton Hotel Group. It
boasts luxurious amenities, pet-friendly staff and
great treats for one’s pooch upon check-in. It
is next door to a nice grassy park for your dog
to play and potty in and centrally located in
downtown Salt Lake City.
Dining Tip The Hotel Monaco also boasts a
fantastic restaurant called the Bambera, where
one can dine on delicious, gourmet dishes, yet
remain not too far from one’s hotel room and
resting pup.
