I seek to document the place in which I exist by indexing the personal, social and political. I can only work from the experienced. The contours of the ‘man-made’ negotiated daily within the high street and suburban dwelling form the structure of much of my work. My intention is not to illustrate environment but rather to create a work where questioning and dialectic lay to its heart. I choose to eliminate the human body from my current work. Total size H 45 x W 105cm appx unframed “My current work is inspired by the Jade Bi disks found in Neolithic burial sites in China. Archaeologists know that they were considered highly important due to their placement on and around the body but their true significance and meaning remains a mystery. I am intrigued by their symbolism and the universality of the shape: a pierced disc, and fascinated by the thoughts, hopes and imaginings encompassed within this simple yet fundamental form. I throw the various parts and I assemble them in a playful way. I emphasize on the tactility of the object and the way contrasting textures change our perception of colour and shape. During the firing, the objects build their own character and reappear as records of an alteration process and metaphors of our transitory existence” “I approach the ceramic object as a messenger. This messenger carries a story about our relationship with the world and about our apprehension of our own selves” Stathis’ sculptural stories explore the borderline area between two realms; the liminal state of suspension between the known and the unknown, between the expected and the unexpected.They are witnesses of change as a fundamental element of life. She set up her studio in 2003 and has since gained international acclaim for her work. “My work can be described as 3 dimensional drawings, in the medium of ceramics. Each piece, on the surface, an inanimate object, has been given layers of emotion and embedded with stories, which are open for interpretation in the viewer’s mind. When put together, the pieces combine to make a tableau staging the still lives of everyday objects. The life size pieces and the unexpectedness of the scale create a slightly surreal experience as you walk through this strange environment. I work very instinctively, one piece leads to the next, I try not to pin down what I am doing or even why. I have to trust and believe that I can communicate through this medium. There’s something very familiar about each celebrity in her painted portraits. Silvina has spent time with renowned Argentinean artists Adrian Lirman and Ricardo Celma, who invited her to study at their respective ateliers. It was here she developed her unique style, using mainly acrylics, which often features intriguing portraits set to abstract backgrounds of wild colour. ‘Serie Argento’ is a collection of paintings, which features icons of Argentina – comedians, magicians, glamour models, and singers. A reflection of celebrity culture in vibrant Latin style. ‘Anibal’ Aníbal Carmelo Troilo was an Argentine tango musician.
