When I look back on 2013, it truly was what most military spouses would call normal. We had several friends PCS,
we met several new ones, and through it all, the soldiers deployed, redeployed, deployed and changed jobs in the
never ending cycle of the military year. So as I enter February, I think to myself- self, what can you do to make this
year extra special, more memorable, make others’ lives vivid. That’s when it hit me- it is not the grandiose gestures
that make being a military spouse AWESOME, it is those every day, simple steps. It’s those small steps we take every day: helping that friend who is PCSing, making dinner for a another’s family during hardship or going to a
shower for a first time mother far from home to make her day special. This is who we are and why we are awesome. Each of us has the potential to make the life of another spouse FABULOUS without really making that grand
gesture. We can all aspire to be better humans and that is what will make 2014 different. In the month that we celebrate love, let’s vow to love one another just a little more. Let’s make a resolution to hug those spouses in need a little tighter, smile at one another more often, and celebrate being the FABULOUS military spouse that we are.
Thank you to all the amazing ladies who came out and modeled for the thrift shop fashion show in January. It was
an AWESOME show that was truly memorable. Janelle and her committee did a fantastic job. Also a special thanks
to Kat Fresh for agreeing to be our MC for the program. As we look to this month’s luncheon, we are honored to
share the day with our sisters from the South. This joint luncheon surely promises to be full of all the glamour of
Hollywood as we present- Hui at the Oscars. Channel that inner Diva, Meryl Streep, or even Amy Adams and make
your reservations today.
Lastly, this year I encourage you to try something new as well as making a difference in your community. You can
do this by volunteering at our amazing thrift shop or even consider running for a board position to help guide the
Hui next fall. Both are amazing opportunities to help our community grow and flourish but are just small steps that
have BIG dividends.
Have a FANTASTIC February

Aloha Hui Members!
How are those new year's resolutions working out for all of you? Okay, I had to ask, but I am not here to judge.
It was yet another fun luncheon last month. Sending kudos out to Janelle and her band of merry sisters! Do you
see a great pattern developing here? Every month I like to sit with a new group of gals, not all of them strangers, of
course, but sometimes that is just as fun. All of us can get busy, so the luncheons are a great place to catch up
while watching the activities of the purse game unfold.
You know another great place to catch up? The annual Mock Dining In held on Saturday, March 1st. This is our
big girl shoes function...literally...and also, it is held at night, so you can really feel like a grown up.
Tickets are on sale now for $25. You can purchase them from any board member at any time, or at our next luncheon for cash only. We would love for you to join the excitement! Until then, have a fantastic February!

This month we'll be celebrating Hui at the Oscars! We will roll out the red carpet to welcome our sisters from the Hui 'O Wahine at Fort Shafter, as it is time
for our joint luncheon! Remember to get your seats reserved as soon as possible

exactly which movies you might want to watch prior to the luncheon!
So pull out those costumes and join us as we munch on popcorn, smile for the

General Rules:
1. Thou shalt not be late and arrive in appropriate attire (costume).
2. Thou shalt make every effort to meet all guests and compliment them on their fabulous costume/
attire.
3. Thou shalt move to the mess when summoned and remain standing until seated by the President.
5. Thou shalt not leave the mess whilst convened. If nature calls, suck it up, Cupcake……or take
the punishment deemed appropriate by our lovely “judges.”
6. Thou shalt participate in all toasts unless thyself or thy group is being honored with a toast.
7. Thou shalt ensure that thy glass is always charged while toasting.
8. Thou shalt always use proper toasting procedure (see program).
9. Thou shalt not steal another group’s decorations nor damage their attire.
10. Thou shalt not overindulge thyself in alcoholic beverages. (Thou shalt not drink alcoholic beverages if underage.)
Addressing the Mess:
GROG BOWL:
A member may want to raise a point of order or identify infractions to the Mess. The proper way is as follows:
The grog bowl contains a combination of different foods/
drinks and may be unsavory looking, but it is not undrinkable. When sent to the grog bowl, one should do the following:
1. Rise and state “Madam Vice, a point of order”
Proceed to the bowl in a spousely fashion, straight and to the
point.
2. When recognized by the Vice, identify yourself and
state your business.
Salute the grog in the appropriate manner.
3. It is tradition to offer flattering words to the President, Madam Vice and Judges to sway your cause.
Bribes may be considered.
Fill the cup at least a couple of drops.
Do an about face and toast the mess stating: “To the Mess!”
Drain the grog from the cup without removing it from the
lips.
Infraction of the Mess:
A member may be punished for violating the rules of
the Mess. A member may also be punished for something they might have done earlier in the year, or for
no reason other than the fact that someone wants to
send them to the grog bowl. Embellishment of facts is
highly encouraged. Punishment might include singing a song, telling a joke, being sent to the grog bowl,
or some other activity determined by the President,
Madam Vice and /or “judges.”
Tip the cup upside down over one’s head signifying it is empty.
Do an about face, replace cup, salute the grog, and return to
your seat.
You may not talk during this process.
NOTE: No one is forced to drink from the Grog…..another
“punishment” will be divined by the “judges.”

Shop. The Schofield Thrift Shop is seeking volunteers to help out in the

The Boy Scouts of America will be our February charity. Scouting in Hawaii has a long history, from the 1900s to the present day, serving thousands of youth in programs that suit the unique environment in which they
live. Troop 24 of Schofield Barracks has been in existence for over 80
years. The mission of the Boy Scouts is developing leaders for life. Boy
Scouts prove themselves in an environment that challenges their courage
and tests their nerve. After they've been given the proper guidance from
those with experience and know-how, they take their own lead, going places they've never gone, seeing things they've never seen, and diving into
the rugged world of outdoor adventure, relying on teamwork and character
to accomplish what everyone else thinks is impossible.
Troop meetings are generally held every Monday from 1830 to 2100 at the
Schofield Barracks Scout Hut. If your child is interested in joining Troop 24
or looking for other information please email
[email protected]
Donations of camp kitchen supplies and cleaning supplies have been requested.
