The Challenge
When homeowners, Sara and her husband Dave, of Costello Builders,
decided to construct their new home in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch
country they had two major requirements. The first was a dedicated home
theater and the other was a whole-house automation system they could
control from their Apple devices that was powerful and easy-to-use. The
question on their minds? Would they be able to seamlessly marry their love
of rustic-style design with modern convenience and luxury? For a solution,
they called on long-time friend Lee Rambler, vice president and director
of custom home, WeeBee Audio/Video, who suggested they adopt URC’s
Total Control® whole-house automation system.

“We knew Total Control was the ideal choice and would make things easy
for them without detracting from the home’s eclectic yet elegant design,”
said Lee. Any member of the family can enjoy music of their choice from
anywhere throughout the interior or exterior of the home – right from
any of their iDevices or one of four Total Control remotes. Closeted away
in a neat and serviceable rack, the installed URC amplifier, personal
music server plus streaming network player give the family of three
access to whole-house audio from multiple sources they’re already used
to including Pandora, Rhapsody, Sirius/XM and their respective iPod®
playlists. Powered by URC’s MRX-10 Controller, the family also enjoys
control of more than just their music. “They love that they can use their
iPhone® or iPad® to control everything, including music and lighting,
without having to search for a remote,” said Lee.

Mixing reclaimed elements and modern technology, rustic décor and
refined gear, the resulting home embraces eclecticism with plenty of
high-end appeal. Besides the benefits of the addition of the control
system, the dedicated theater room stays true to the homeowners’ design
sensibility while punctuated with technological touches. Its 92” projector
screen is framed in construction salvaged wood, facing plush couches
amidst hardwood floors, a roofed projector and a truly unique sculptural
depiction of a coral reef. The theater now plays host to parties for the
couple’s teen daughter and her friends plus mother-daughter movie
nights, making it the ultimate multi-purpose space.
