Six decades ago in September, on the rocky slopes of Kalaepohaku in Kaimuki, a small junior college
opened its doors. With four classrooms in Henry Hall, five Marianists prepared to welcome the 30 male
students enrolled. This fall, we are marking the 60th anniversary of Chaminade University – renamed
thus from St. Louis Junior College initially and then Chaminade College.

Our diamond anniversary has been themed “Shine On, Chaminade!” as an expression of the
tremendous growth and transformation we have experienced across sixty years of educating
students for life, service and successful careers. During this time some 24,000
degrees have been awarded.
We are seeking stories of our students, from the first three graduates in 1959, to the newest alumni
members from this past May. Please share your story on our website www.chaminade60.com
and enjoy some of the photos and faces from decades past.
This summer, a number of key campus renovation and construction projects were completed while others
are just beginning. Generous gifts from alumni and board members are funding improvements in our
athletics facilities, including a complete overhaul of our tennis courts and initial work for our new coaching
complex. The aerial photos above show the contrast of the campus in its early years versus today.
This summer we also welcomed members of our congressional delegation as they came to visit campus.
US Senator Brian Schatz met with students over lunch as did Representative Mark Takai and, most
recently, Senator Mazie Hirono. (Rep. Tulsi Gabbard’s visit is pending.) Their questions to the students
ranged from career plans after college to views on issues facing young adults. Currently at Chaminade,
we are integrating and expanding our efforts to ensure that our graduates are “career ready.” Plans include
a four-year, developmental scheme for resume/portfolio of career relevant activities that students will be
encouraged to undertake. We are excited to have students back on campus and look forward to a
productive academic year as well as a shining diamond anniversary.

A robust, multi-faceted program aims to prepare students for success in health professions.
Known for her gracious disposition, associate provost, Patricia
Lee-Robinson, extended a warm welcome to a group of visitors who
were eager to see her renovated office on the third floor of the Clarence
T.C. Ching Administration Building. Beaming proudly at the freshly
painted sky blue wall, she noted, “We’re almost done; just a few more
things to fix.” She then invited her guests to the new prehealth resource
room, complete with a library and multimedia technology which will
enable the current student to video conference with alumni who
volunteer to help with mock interviews. They can also meet by video
conference with profesionals in the prehealth network.
A Vision Realized
Building on its rich history of servant leadership and innovation,
Chaminade University took steps four years ago to formally launch the
Office of Health Professions Advising and Undergraduate Research
(OHPAUR). Led by Patricia Lee-Robinson, with overwhelming support
from administrators, faculty, students and families, the institution’s goal
is to inspire and guide those interested in pursuing a health profession,
including medicine, dentistry, podiatry, veterinary medicine,
occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, audiology
and physician assisting.
Preparing students for health professions is not a new concept at
Chaminade. In fact, the workings of this program have been taking
place for over a decade with academic and career advising; applications,
test-taking and interviewing skills assistance; and clinical, research and
volunteer opportunities.
Although the Office of Health Profession Advising was not a formalized
program back when Kahue was an undergraduate, the partnerships
developed by Chaminade gave her a competitive edge. She participated
in several summer programs, including St. Jude Children’s Research
Hospital, where she collaborated with postdoctoral fellows on a research
project involving novel drug therapy for imatinib-resistant chronic
myelogenous leukemia. In 2007, she participated in Yale’s Biomedical
Sciences Training and Enrichment Program, and from 2008-2010,
she completed a post baccalaureate research fellowship at the
National Cancer Institute.
“I was able to work under the guidance of prestigious researchers and
present that work at conferences. I learned that an even greater emphasis
was being placed on research experience in considering medical school
applicants. I had no idea that Chaminade’s research focus would serve
me so well later on,” noted Kahue.
Reflecting on her years at Chaminade, she credits Biology Professor
Ron Iwamoto for never accepting less than a student’s personal best,
and Lee-Robinson, who became a second mother to Kahue. “She has
unwavering commitment to her students and will go to any lengths to
help them succeed, from reading personal statements to keeping them
well-fed,” said a grateful Kahue.

Beyond Nashville, Tennessee’s famous destination as the “Country
Music Capital of the World and Music City,” this pulsating city is also
home to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, a highly ranked
medical school with a reputation as a center of research and
high-quality clinical care.
Dr. Charissa Kahue ’09, a Vanderbilt medical school graduate, will
continue her work there as one of a handful of applicants chosen for
a highly competitive five-year residency program, specializing in
otolaryngology/head and neck surgery. Logging an average of 70-80
hours a week, this young surgical resident is discovering the breadth
of operations that otolaryngologists perform, well beyond tonsil and ear
tube surgery.
“I’m here because of Chaminade University. Through their wide network
of partners, access to national conferences, and amazing faculty and
administrators, I was able to gain opportunities that I didn’t even know
existed or would have access to,” said Kahue, who majored in biology.

His years at Chaminade have been a whirlwind. Following his
freshman year, he participated in the Summer Medical and Dental
Education Program at UCLA. In spring 2013, Ruaro was accepted
into the prestigious Boston University Early Medical School Selection
Program (EMSSP), and has already spent two summers there taking
classes for his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. Also, as part of EMSSP,
he spent his senior year at Boston University, and after graduating
from Chaminade this past spring, Ruaro matriculated into the Boston
University School of Medicine.
Ruaro credits the tremendous support he received from Lee-Robinson,
who guided him through the application process to supporting his
decisions. He also received genuine advice of what to expect in
graduate level classes from Chemistry Professor Bulent Terem.
“Everyone at Chaminade has been there every step of the way,”
says Ruaro.

He knew he wanted to become a doctor when he lost his grandmother
to cancer. “I realized that a career in medicine would be a humbling
privilege. To be granted the care of another’s life requires sensitivity and
empathy, coupled with knowledge and the trust of one’s own judgment,”
explains Ruaro.

“Going to medical school and becoming a doctor was always my dream,”
said Jacquelynn Pratt ’06, a biology and English major.
Determined to make the most of her education, Pratt participated in
summer enrichment and research programs, including the University
of Hawai‘i’s Haumana Biomedical Research Program, the Minority
Medical Education Program at Rice University and Baylor College
of Medicine, the Pediatric Oncology Education Program at St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital, Chaminade’s Ronald E. McNair Scholars
Program, and a research position at the Cook Islands’ General Hospital
in Rarotonga.
“But after all my studying and hard work, I didn’t get in when I first
applied for medical school,” Pratt shared. Disappointed, but not deterred,
Pratt decided to work to pay off student loans. When she was ready
to renew her MCAT studying efforts a few years later, she contacted
her former pre-health advisor Lee-Robinson, who offered her a staff
position with Chaminade’s Office of Health Professions Advising and
Undergraduate Research.
Her hard work and fortitude did pay off when she was accepted to A.T.
Still University- Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri
in 2013. Now in her third year of medical school, she is participating
in clinical rotations at one of KCOM’s sites in Arizona, where she helps
deliver babies. Pratt said, “I hope that I keep feeling that sense of awe
that I felt with my first delivery.”
Pratt is deeply grateful to individuals like Lee-Robinson and Brother
Bernard Ploeger, Chaminade University’s President, and countless others
who were instrumental in the development of this program. “When I
was a student at Chaminade we didn’t yet have a formal program, but my
time there definitely helped lead me to where I am today,” said Pratt.
Kevin Ruaro
Keeping up with Kevin Ruaro ’15 is no easy task. In addition to being
an exceptional athlete as a former member of Chaminade’s cross country
team, he is known for taking a rigorous load of courses, including
biology and chemistry.
“I was introduced to Chaminade when they visited my high school in
Guam and it became my top choice due to the feeling of community,”
explained Ruaro. “Chaminade has been integral in providing the
resources needed for students, whether it’s mock interviews or finding
the right program to strengthen an application.”

Joanna Lau Sullivan
Hawaii philanthropist and prominent community
leader, Joanna Lau Sullivan, died in Honolulu on
September 2, at the age of 94. Widow of Foodland
founder Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan,
Mrs. Sullivan had been a long-time supporter of
Chaminade University who helped change the
face of the campus. While having many interests,
Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan were especially associated in
the education of Hawaii’s youth and health care,
particularly within the Catholic community. They were
major benefactors of Chaminade and provided funding
for the Sullivan Family Library, as well as its predecessor.

with the handwritten and illustrated Saint John’s Bible.
Named Philanthropist of the Year by the Association
of Fundraising Professionals--Honolulu Chapter in
2008 and 2013, Mrs. Sullivan was well-known
in the community for her generosity. Her graciousness,
the smiles and lei she shared, all the simple gestures,
expressed the sincere aloha she had in her heart
for everyone around her.

The Rev. Tim Eden, SM, has been
appointed vice president for Mission at
Saint Mary’s University. Previously he held
the role of university chaplain and faculty
member. The primary responsibility of
the vice president for Mission is to work
collaboratively within the university to
ensure the Catholic and Marianist identity
of St. Mary’s. He will also oversee the Office
of University Ministry and the Marianist
Educational Associates program.

Gordon Umi Kai, BS Marketing Science ’73
Gordon Umi Kai received a Fellowship
Award from the Native Arts and Cultures
Foundation (NACF). The fellowships
recognize exceptional Native Hawaiian
artists who have made a significant impact
in the fields of visual arts, dance, music and
traditional arts. Umi received the award for
Traditional Arts. He is a master of Native
Hawaiian arts and known especially for
the weapons he creates working with bone,
wood, shark’s teeth creating objects for
fishing, farming and more. He will use
his fellowship to launch a traditional arts
master-apprentice program to teach next
generations to create Native Hawaiian
cultural objects.

Gina Saldania is
an actress, model
and beauty
queen, who has
won local and
national titles.
This led to
international
modeling and
being accepted at the Elite
Modeling Agency in New York. She has
appeared on various television series, in
made-for-TV movies and in feature films.
Gina’s daughter, Clea Saldania-Rountree,
also an international model, actress and
beauty queen has been modeling since she
was a baby.
Donna Pennington, BFA Studio Art,
Interior Design ’85
Donna Pennington is the director of Interior
Design at MGA Architecture where she said
“being in an environment that is healthy
both physical and mental allows creativity to
flow freely.” Both Donna and her husband
Terry are Chaminade alums and support the
Chaminade men’s golf team. She said, “We

love giving back to Chaminade as we know

Sean Rooney, BS Criminal Justice ’90
Sean is the assistant
chief counsel for the
Enforcement Division
of the California
Department of
Business Oversight.
For the last 19 years,
Sean has been responsible for the criminal
investigations and
prosecutions of securities fraud and “Ponzi”
schemes throughout
the state of California.
Sean has also served on
the Board of Directors
of the National White Collar Crime Center
(NW3C). The National White Collar
Crime Center, also known as NW3C, is a
congressionally funded non-profit
corporation which trains state and local law
enforcement agencies to combat emerging
economic and cyber-crime problems. He
is also a member of the John R. Wooden
Award Committee of the Los Angeles
Athletic Club, which selects the top men’s
and women’s NCAA collegiate basketball
player each year.

Administration ’95
Elizabeth “Bitsy” Kelley and members
of the Kelley family together with the
Outrigger Resorts ‘ohana launched OZONE
– Outrigger’s Zone, a global conservative
initiative designed to strengthen coral health
and resiliency in the waters of Outrigger
Resorts’ iconic destinations. Bitsy Kelly, vice
president of corporate communications for
Outrigger Hotels, said “OZONE is an action
plan that charts a clear course for Outrigger
to make a positive impact in helping to save
and protect coral reefs and ultimately the
wellness of the waters around the world. As
a lifelong surfer, swimmer and snorkeler,
ocean health is near and dear to my heart,
and I’m extremely proud that Outrigger
Resorts has pledged significant resources and
is aligning with key conservation partners for
this important cause.”
Brook Lee, BA English ’96
Brook Lee is currently living and working in
Los Angeles. Along with commercial
appearances, Brook is a creative director for
THE SHEPPARD, a boutique creative
marketing company. She lives with her

one in June. Brook was Miss USA and Miss
Hawaii USA prior to winning the Miss

David Morimoto was recently promoted to
executive vice president & chief financial
officer of Central Pacific Bank and its
publicly traded holding company, Central
Pacific
Financial
Corp.
(NYSE:
CPF). In
his new
role, David
is responsible for the
financial
management,
accounting,
management
reporting
and investor
relations functions of CPB and CPF. “My
Chaminade MBA played a vital role in my
career development as it helped to strengthen my leadership and team building skills,”
he said. David and wife, Kathy, reside in
Honolulu with their two daughters.

my Master’s in Education degree from
Chaminade by creating curriculum for
innovative project-based learning courses
at Mid-Pacific and guiding my students
through authentic learning experiences. She
is in her fifth year at Mid-Pacific and had
previously taught for five years at Sacred
Hearts Academy.

Alex Javier is the senior marketing specialist
at Servco Pacific Inc. in Hawaii where he
is in charge of managing the company’s
distributor and retail websites which includes
Scion, Toyota, Lexus, Subaru and Chevy.
He writes, “After graduating from the MBA
program, I gained valuable insights into
the nature of businesses as a whole. I was
not only able
to take my
educational
experience and
directly apply
it in my career
but most
importantly,
the values and
principles I
learned help
guide the
decisions I
make on a
daily basis.”

This past summer, the U.S. Department
of the Interior announced the selection of
four students from the U.S. Insular Areas to
participate in the Office of Insular Affairs
Internship Program in Washington, D.C.
Two of the four students selected are from
Chaminade. Fuatino Leleo Solaita, from
Nu’uuli, American Samoa is pursuing a
Master’s Degree in Business Administration
from Chaminade University. She is currently
working as a Human Resources practitioner
at the American Samoan Government
Department of Human Resources. Also
selected was Martin Joseph Moore III, of
Ngerchemai, Koror, Palau and Pottstown,
Pennsylvania who is a graduate of Xavier
High School in Chuuk, Federated States
of Micronesia and senior at Chaminade
University majoring in International Studies.

A Kamehameha Schools graduate and a
Chaminade Biochemistry graduate is now
attending George Washington University
School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
He shares “Chaminade University has been
instrumental in helping me achieve my
lifetime goal of becoming a physician.
Thanks to the Office of Health Professions
Advising and Undergraduate Research, I was
able to receive early acceptance to the George
Washington University School of Medicine
and Health Sciences. Mahalo nui to Patricia
Lee-Robinson and Brother Bernie for their
hard work and perseverance in securing
multiple opportunities for students to attend
professional schools. I am also
eternally grateful for Dr. Bulent Terem and

FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2015 (unaudited FYE 2015 financial data*)
Aulani Ka‘ano‘ i, Vice President of Finance and Facilities
The University had an increase in net assets for the year ending June 30,
2015, of over $1.34 million. These results were driven by a strong
operating surplus, modest endowment gains, and continued investments
in our facilities. Though enrollments were uneven, especially in our
part-time programs, a careful eye on spending resulted in a surplus of
almost $1.7 million (cash basis). The endowment portfolio recorded
moderate total realized and unrealized gains for the year of $ 320,000.

Over the summer, we were also very busy completing the renovation

Finally, a $100,000 grant from Mr. Sai Cheong Chui, a graduate of
Chaminade’s MBA program, allowed us to complete a much needed
renovation of our tennis courts. The beautifully renovated tennis
courts have new drainage systems, surfaces and coated fencing.

Construction and renovation projects have continued to flourish on
campus. In early August 2015, we proudly opened the new lobby of
Clarence T.C. Ching Hall. Featuring our University seal imbedded in
the natural stone floor, the lobby is a beautiful addition to our campus.
The on-going renovation of Clarence T.C. Ching Hall continues to be
funded by a generous grant from the Foundation of the same name.
