The Hickory Choral Society is a funded affiliate of the Catawba County Council for the Arts.
Hickory Choral Society closes its 38th season with one of the most frequently performed choral works of the 21st century. CARMINA BURANA by Carl
Orff was made popular by the memorable surfing advertisement for Old Spice aftershave. Today, the opening theme is heard across collegiate football games as
well as opening music for other events, even NASCAR events. This spring concert
is sponsored by Corning Optical Communications.
"Carmina "means "songs" while "Beuren" is Latin for the Benedictine monastery in Bavaria. "Songs of Beuren" is a reference to a collection of early 13th
century songs and poems discovered in that southern German town in 1803. They
were written by students and clergy and appear to be the work of Goliards, a
group of clergy who wrote bibulous, satirical Latin poetry. The songs were an obvious satire on the
Catholic Church.
CARMINA BURANA is divided into three sections---Springtime, In the Tavern, and The Court of
Love. Orff chose twenty-four songs and set them to music in what he termed a scenic cantata. In the
parody world, the rules of priesthood include sleeping late, eating heavy food, drinking rich wine and
regularly playing dice games. There are also very strong innuendos of attraction to the opposite sex.
This flamboyant work includes a full orchestra with six percussionists, three soloists and chorus.
It clearly is a fitting conclusion to the 38th season of the Hickory Choral Society. This is an afternoon

2016 Spring Concert
Hickory Choral Society is delighted to present the final concert of its 38th Season featuring three outstanding guest soloists. The repertoire for this Sunday, April 10th, 3 pm performance at the
First Baptist Church, Hickory, is the widely acclaimed composition by Carl Orff, CARMINA BURANA. This
spring concert is sponsored by Corning Optical Communications.
A member of the voice faculty at Furman University, Soprano Kathryn Knauer
lives in Greenville, South Carolina. She began her life in the operatic world with the
Houston Grand Opera. Her performances include many operatic roles as well as choral
masterworks, including CARMINA BURANA. Ms. Knauer was awarded first prize in the
National Federation of Musicians Collegiate competition in the state of Illinois as well
as the Bravo Award from the Bel Canto Foundation in Chicago.
Jeffrey Price, Tenor, has performed as a guest soloist with concert
organizations in Charlotte, West Virginia, Canton, Ohio, the Durham, Greensboro and
Tampa Choral Societies and many other venues. Price twice toured China, conducting
lectures and recitals with the Eastman School of Music. He served on the music faculty
at UNC Charlotte and Marshall University for thirty years. A recipient of the Bank of
America Teaching Award in 2010, he was presented with the North Carolina Board of
Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2011.
From Chicago to Southeastern United States, Bruce Schoonmaker, Baritone, has performed on
the operatic stage and as guest soloist with orchestras and choruses. In 1975, he won the Bel Canto
Competition in Florence, Italy. For thirteen years he was the leading baritone at the Brevard Music Festival. In 1990, Schoonmaker performed in
Perth, Australia and in 2006 in Japan. Recently, he and his wife performed
in Palais, France. He attended Davidson College, Furman University and
Northwestern University and currently is professor of voice at Furman University. Hickory Choral Society was honored to have him as guest soloist
twenty years ago for their last performance of CARMINA BURANA.
Hickory Choral Society 2016 Children’s Summer Camp
Hickory Choral Society is pleased to offer its third Children’s Choral Camp, to be held this summer, June 27—July 1, 2016. The camp will be a one-week, half-day program (8:50 AM—Noon) for rising 4th-6th grade students, to gain basic choral fundamentals through vocal classes. The camp is
designed to enhance the current educational system by providing an opportunity to participate in musical activities in an atmosphere of fun and friendship, while developing an interest in – and fostering
an appreciation of – choral music.
Students will start each day with a clinic and wrap up by enjoying various SALT Block venues.
The camp will conclude on Friday with a Parent/Family/Friends observation time and reception. Tuition for the week is $20.00, which includes snack and camp T-shirt. Scholarships are available.
This year’s clinician is Karol Kimmell, a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne University with a Bachelor’s
Degree in Music Education. Karol has spent over 25 years directing children’s choirs. She is currently
the Director of Youth and Children’s Music at All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, GA.

“Grace Notes”
Hickory Choral Society has always been able to attribute much of its success to the tremendous
level of volunteerism and support found in the surrounding area. Hickory Choral Society Auxiliary, better known as the “Grace Notes,” was created to give non-singing volunteers an official opportunity to
be an integral part of our gift to the community. Grace Notes membership is composed primarily of
former singers, spouses, adult children of current singers, and persons from the greater arts community who exhibit a love for choral music. Assistance comes in a variety of forms including ushering; assisting patrons and contributors at the information table during concerts; helping the Hickory Choral
Society office manager with mailings and other office duties; and planning for various Hickory Choral
Society events. Grace Notes members are able to help in any way that makes the Hickory Choral Society effective in bringing excellent choral music to the Unifour.
The Hickory Choral Society is extremely grateful for the efforts of all of its Grace Notes members – present and past. Please consider giving the gift of your time and special talents to the Hickory
Choral Society. By becoming an auxiliary member of the Hickory Choral Society Auxiliary, you can

Hickory Choral Society
J. Don Coleman Endowment
Every year since 1984, the Hickory Choral Society has provided monetary assistance through
the J. Don Coleman Endowment Fund to the choral music programs of schools in Catawba County.
Beginning in 2014 this assistance was expanded to include Alexander, Burke and Caldwell county
schools.
This year we were able to make grants to 20 schools in the Unifour Area. Since the funding to
music departments over the past years has been lessened due to economic cuts, this type of assistance has become more important than ever. In addition to helping area school teachers reach their
goals of providing quality music programs for their students, the Choral Society is also showing its
support and appreciation for the dedication of these teachers. Another bonus, for both the Hickory
Choral Society and the community, is the nurturing of many fine young choral musicians in our area
schools.
Members of the Hickory Choral Society have every right to be proud of our endeavors to take
an active role in educating local music students. These grants can be used for anything from producing a school-wide musical to purchasing music scores for use in class. The support we offer through
the Endowment Fund is both priceless and unlimited.
