DESIGN
FREEDOM
Revolutionising Heating
Revolutionise your interior design
by freeing your walls of radiators
and installing floor heating.
Polyplumb floor heating systems
open up a whole range of possibilities
for you, and can provide a variety
of systems – even suitable for single
room projects.
Free your walls with Polyplumb floor
heating.
01
Free Your Walls
Polyplumb floor heating allows you to free your walls of unsightly
radiators, either throughout your whole house or in one specific
room. It provides you with more useable wall space, offering
you the freedom to design your room in imaginative and
creative ways. Floor heating is ideal for rooms where there
is already limited wall space, such as loft conversions,
conservatories and bathrooms, allowing you to better
utilise the areas usually restricted by radiators.
The unique Polyplumb OverlayTM system is an ideal solution
for single room extensions and retro-fit projects. This revolutionary
system requires no digging – the environmentally friendly
floor panels simply fit over your existing flooring. For more
information on OverlayTM and the full range of Polyplumb
floor heating solutions see page 5.
Enhanced Aesthestics
Freeing your walls of radiators provides you with unlimited
scope to design the aesthetics of your room. This opens up
a whole range of possibilities: for example fitting floor length
curtains or having the option to re-position your furniture.
Removing the inconvenience of radiators allows you
to make the best possible use of the space available –
offering you complete design freedom.
Maintenance Free
All Polyplumb systems are virtually maintenance free and are
covered by the Polypipe 50 year guarantee (full details can
be found on page 6).
They offer a quieter solution than other leading products –
resulting in a tranquil and relaxing, as well as warm and
cosy, environment.
Floor heating also eliminates the general need for maintenance
and decoration. You no longer need to remove radiators
to paint the walls, or paint radiators to match a new
colour scheme.
A Range of Solutions
Polyplumb have a range of solutions to cover everything
from new build properties and whole house renovations,
to single room retro-fit projects or extensions. Our systems
combine ease of installation with reliable long-term
performance, and are produced by Polypipe, the UK’s
largest manufacturer of floor heating products. Polypipe are
also members of the Underfloor Heating Manufacturers’
Association (UHMA).
Our products offer the benefits of floor heating to everyone
– whatever the size or shape of your project.

COMFORTABLE
LIFE
Substantial Benefits
Heating technology has advanced
considerably in recent years, and floor
heating is now an affordable and
efficient means of heating your home.
Floor heating is the most comfortable,
energy efficient and clean form of
room heating you can choose.
Polyplumb systems create a gentle,
even heat and lead to a healthier,
allergy free and safer environment
for everyone.
03
Comfortable Environment
The environment created by floor heating is different to
that produced by radiators. Floor heating systems emit
gentle radiant warmth across the entire floor surface,
ensuring the room is heated evenly, eliminating draughts
and cold spots, and ensuring a warm comfortable
environment.
This warmth is then absorbed by people and the objects
around them, and doesn’t need air movement to be
effective. radiators actually create air movement and heat
the ceilings first, producing a stuffy atmosphere. However,
floor heating simply creates a warm zone about two
metres from the floor level. This makes it particularly
suitable for rooms with high ceilings.
Energy Efficient
Floor heating systems can be more economical to run than
a radiator based system. As they demand a low temperature
rise output from the boiler, they are ideally suited to achieving
maximum economy from a condensing boiler or heat pump.
However, floor heating is just as efficient with higher
temperature heat sources, e.g. solar and solid fuel, where
the correct water temperature can be set at the point
of distribution.
Whatever your heat source, floor heating can be installed.
Clean, Healthy and Safe
Heating a home through the floor doesn’t affect humidity levels,
leading to a fresher atmosphere than in homes heated
by radiators. Floor heating reduces the air circulation within
the room; minimising airborne dust particles - providing
a healthier and allergy free environment for the whole family.
Securing your heating in the floor also prevents any
potential hazards from radiators – such as sharp, protruding
edges and extremely hot surfaces. Contact with radiators at
their normal operating temperatures, which can be up to
80°C, can cause deep skin burns within minutes.

OVERLAYTM
Kitchen / Wet Room
A Sheffield householder wanted a heating system for his
conservatory that would provide him and his family with the
freedom to use the room throughout the year. The conservatory
had already been laid with a solid concrete floor, and covered
with large slate tiles, meaning it would have been extremely
disruptive to install traditional under floor central heating.
The perfect solution was to install Polyplumb OverlayTM,
a revolutionary floor heating system that is ideal for retro-fit
projects. The panel system was laid directly over the existing
solid floor, without the need for any digging, and is ideal for
rooms where wall space is minimal or you require complete
design freedom.
The unique Polyplumb OverlayTM system allowed them
to install floor heating in their conservatory directly over the
existing solid floor, without the need for any digging. The
system is ideal for single room retro-fit projects such as
conservatories, as it can be installed in existing spaces
quickly, easily and practically.
The entire installation was completed in just over half a day
and David was able to lay tiles over the system that evening.
The OverlayTM system was connected to the main boiler,
which also supplied the existing radiator based system
throughout the rest of the house.
The remainder of the house was heated through traditional
radiators, but OverlayTM is easily connected to existing heating
systems and the water is converted to a temperature and flow
rate suitable for floor heating.

Conservatory
David Wilson Wolfe didn’t consider his heating options until
he was well underway with a major renovation through the
ground floor of his detached house in Sheffield. The new
kitchen units had already been installed and there was also
limited wall space in the shower room. The concrete floor
had already been laid throughout both rooms as well.
The owner and his family were delighted with the work and
were impressed with how quickly the system was installed.
They are now able to enjoy a warm and comfortable atmosphere
at any time of the year, and make full use of the additional
living space.
Loft Conversion
Mill Renovation
OverlayTM is quick and easy to install and the system in St.
Annes was up and running within two days. Radiators heated
the remainder of the house, and the floor heating was installed
with minimal disruption to the existing heating and water supply.
One of the major benefits of OverlayTM is that it can be run in
conjunction with your existing heating system and boilers –
making it perfect for single room applications.
Gareth decided to install a Polyplumb OverlayTM floor heating
system, as the lack of any flat, straight wall space made it
practically impossible, and expensive, to install a radiator
based system. OverlayTM is ideal for retro-fit projects as the
revolutionary system can be installed directly over existing
flooring without any major disruption. The installation at the
Mill was laid over a concrete base on the ground floor, and
timber flooring upstairs.
The owners of a large detached house in the upmarket area
of St. Annes-on-the-Sea in Lancashire increased their available
living space by converting their loft area into an additional
bedroom. The available wall space in the new room was
limited so they decided to install a Polyplumb OverlayTM floor
heating system, which is ideal for rooms where there is
minimal wall space for radiators.
The owners decided to finish off their new loft conversion with
modern wood laminate flooring. OverlayTM can be fitted under
any type of floor covering, including carpet, timber, laminate,
tiles or vinyl, as long as it is well insulated underneath.
Unique and unusual renovation projects usually require an
innovative solution to their heating requirements, and there
can be none quite as unusual as the renovation of Blyton
Mill in Lincoln into a modern family home. Gareth HewitsonMay discovered the curved walls and authentic feel of the
property led to difficulties when considering how the Mill
should be heated.
The installation of OverlayTM has allowed the Mill to retain
its authentic character, while still maintaining an effective
heating system. It has proved extremely effective in providing
a comfortable level of warmth in the Mill, as floor heating
emits gentle radiant warmth across the entire floor surface,
resulting in a pleasant and fresh atmosphere.

BUILD
Self Build
Peter from Sheffield took on the challenge of building
his own home when he couldn’t find a property to meet
his specifications.
He decided to invest in Polyplumb floor heating throughout
the entire four bed roomed property. During the building
project Peter was impressed by the availability and ease
of installation of the Polyplumb products, as well as the
technical support they provided. It also meant he could
schedule in the installation to suit him rather than vice versa.

Extension
New Development
As the floor joists were already exposed a suspended floor
system was used, with insulation fitted in the joist voids to
prevent downward heat loss. Battens were laid across the joists,
and heat spreader plates positioned between the battens.
The pipe was then simply walked into the pre-formed grooves
in the plates.
To reflect the uniqueness of the properties and to improve
their marketability, Brinkley turned to the Polyplumb range of
under floor heating products, including both floating ground
floor and suspended first floor systems.
Micky Skinner wanted to install floor heating in his new first
floor extension – a total space of 6m x 7m, consisting of an
additional bedroom, dressing room and ensuite bathroom.
He decided to fit a Polyplumb under floor system due to its
ease of installation and reliable long-term performance.
In the living area tongue and groove boarding was laid ready
for the carpet, and marble tiles were fitted in the bathroom.
Polyplumb’s range of floor heating solutions will function
efficiently under any type of flooring (carpet, timber, laminate,
tiles or vinyl), as long as it is well insulated underneath to
prevent excessive heat loss.
Each room was fitted with its own thermostat, allowing complete
freedom over the temperature in each room. The Polyplumb
range incorporates a wide variety of control products, allowing
the system to be designed to meet different needs and lifestyles.
Under floor heating is ideal for new developments and
Brinkley Homes have used Polyplumb systems through one
of their recent developments in Belton, near Doncaster.
The development consists of four and five bedroomed
detached properties aimed at the luxury end of the housing
market.
The installation allowed the team flexibility in the building
schedule, and meant that there was no need to remove
fixed radiators to decorate. Brinkley Homes discovered
that the installation was both simpler, and less expensive,
than they had initially perceived.
The properties include separate ground and first floor control
zones, allowing buyers the ability to individually control the
temperature on both floors. Floor heating provided buyers
with more design freedom, without having to take unsightly
radiators into account, allowing them to organise the rooms
the way they want to.
The system was installed in just under two days, and the end
result was a smart and warm extension, with the under floor
heating providing a comfortable and energy efficient form
of heating.

STILL
GOT
COLD
FEET?
The range of Polyplumb floor heating systems has an
answer to all your heating needs. Here are just a sample of
the most frequently asked questions, but if there is anything
else you need to know simply visit www.freeyourwalls.com
or speak with one of our registered installers.
Do I need to dig my floor up?
No, with our patented Overlay™ system you simply lay the
panels over existing solid or timber floors. It provides you with
all the benefits of warm water floor heating, but without the
inconvenience of installing traditional under floor central heating.
Is floor heating easy to control?
Yes, and the Polyplumb range incorporates a wide variety
of control products: including single zone control, allowing
upstairs and downstairs to be controlled separately; and
individual room control, allowing you complete freedom
over the temperature in each room.
Can floor heating be used as well
as my normal heating source?
Yes, floor heating can be used as either the main or secondary
source of a home’s heating. This will primarily depend on
whether it is a new build property or a renovation project
requiring under floor heating; or a single room retro-fit or
extension using the Overlay™ system. They are all compatible
with standard central heating boilers, and are especially
suited to condensing boilers. All Polyplumb floor heating
solutions can also be used as stand-alone systems, and
work in conjunction with heated towel rails.
Is floor heating expensive to install?
No, generally Polyplumb floor heating solutions are
quicker and cheaper to install than most other systems.
As the installation of our floor heating is completed in one
stage, it can reduce the cost, as well as the length of time
the installers are on site for.
11
Is floor heating expensive to run?
No, and in the long run it can be more economical to run
than a radiator based system, as the water is kept at a
lower temperature to produce the equivalent heat output.
As floor heating demands a low temperature rise output
from the boiler, this form of heating is ideally suited to
achieving maximum economy from a condensing boiler
or heat pump.
Can I use floor heating in just one room?
Yes, our unique Overlay™ system is laid over existing
solid or timber floors and is ideal for single room retro-fit
projects or extensions. The unique and innovative products
within the Polyplumb range also allow our under floor
heating to be installed in room extensions or refurbishment
projects with minimal disruption to existing heating and
electrical supplies.
Will the system need maintenance?
No, all Polyplumb floor heating systems are virtually
maintenance free. All pipe used is covered by the Polypipe
50 year guarantee*.
Are Polyplumb systems better
than electric systems?
Yes. All Polyplumb floor heating systems use warm water
and emit heat across the entire floor surface, providing an
even and comfortable heat throughout the room. As they
are connected to your existing heating, they can be more
economical to run than electric systems.
* This guarantee only applies if the system is installed in accordance with the
manufacturer’s recommendations contained within all Polyplumb installation
documents and is used in a normal domestic operation.
Can floor heating only be used
with tiled or solid floors?
Will floor heating make my feet ache?
Will floor heating delay my building
or retro-fit project?
The Polyplumb systems are water based, meaning the
temperature can be controlled much more easily, and
houses are fully insulated underneath, meaning that there
is no excessive heat loss.
No. Polyplumb’s floor heating systems will function efficiently
under any type of flooring – carpet, timber, laminate, tiles
or vinyl, as long as it is well insulated underneath to prevent
excessive heat loss. For further information on different floor
coverings see page 13.
No. If your project is planned correctly there is absolutely
no reason why installing floor heating should delay the
progress. Polyplumb floor heating systems can be quicker
to install than many other under floor systems, and the
unique Overlay™ system can be installed easily in most
existing homes.
No. This was a genuine problem with older floor heating
systems, where electric elements were embedded in a
concrete slab with no insulation. As the majority of the heat
was escaping, the systems had to work harder and at
higher temperatures to keep the room at a comfortable level
– which led to people suffering from achy feet.
12
FLEXIBILITY
AND
CONTROL
Any Floor Covering
Choosing your floor covering might be one of the hardest
choices you have to make when designing a room, and by
using Polyplumb’s range of floor heating systems the choice
is endless.
Polyplumb systems work efficiently under any floor covering,
as long as it is well insulated underneath:
-
13
Carpet
Timber
Laminate
Stone and ceramic tiles, marble or flagstones
Vinyl
Easy to Control
However, each of these floor coverings has different thermal
conduction properties, and harder surfaces, such as tiles
and slate, offer better conductivity, and, therefore, better
heat output rates.
The Polyplumb range includes a number of control
products, with options to suit a variety of lifestyle patterns.
This allows you to source a complete floor heating system
from one supplier.
For additional information visit www.freeyourwalls.com
or speak to your heating installer.
You can choose a single zone system, allowing different
levels of the house to be controlled independently, or
individual room control for complete freedom.
