President’s Message
President’s Message
This month there is a new feature in the president’s
newsletter message. Among the qualities that make
SDFWA a fine organization, contributions of time
and effort by our own members stand out as most
important. From time to time, to highlight these
members, you will hear about one or more of them
who have recently done something significant to
support our activities. Here are five to start the new
feature.
Gary Anderson is the only SDFWA member in
recent memory to fill two vacancies in a single
year; first Publicity Chairman, then SDFWA
secretary to fill the position I left in February. As
Publicity chairman he revitalized the committee's
activities, created a SDFWA Facebook page that
has even impressed some Facebook skeptics (check
it out to see for yourself), arranged two TV
interviews at the Design in Wood Show and made a
great head start in publicity for the Fall Seminar.
Along the way he offered to provide distinctive
SDFWA lapel pins that he manufactures to the
association at his cost.
meetings for many years. This
is by no means an easy job. It
involves lugging numerous,
heavy
cartoons
of
woodworking magazines to
and from each general
meeting, storing them between
meetings and acting as sales
clerk, bookkeeper and inventory manger – in short,
offering our members a much valued chance to get
excellent periodicals at a fraction of original cost.
Hearing that Pat was no longer able to manage the
physical demands of this job, Roberto came
forward recently to offer to take over this task even
though he has a day job and not a great deal of
spare time to cart magazines all over town.
Sincere thanks to these dedicated members, for
keeping our organization healthy and growing.
There is no shortage of other members on the
waiting list for recognition. You will hear about
them in forthcoming newsletter issues. I hope
some of you readers will also be added to the list in
the near future when you see an opportunity to
help.
At a recent board meeting we discovered that the Dick Ugoretz

while. Worse, no one was assigned to this time A playhouse built by volunteers!
consuming but unexciting task. I told the board I
would try to recruit a member to fill the vacancy expecting this to be a challenge. The next day long
time member, Ron Rossi, without being asked,
made my day by volunteering to take on the task.
Mike McElhiney just can’t stop volunteering. First
he stepped up to fill a vacancy for the position of
Newsletter Editor. He continued and enhanced the
improvements begun by his predecessor, Ross
Rehart. Then Mike took over the job of creating
personalized wooden name badges for our
members. He recently made a fine engraved gavel
to thank KUSI TV for doing an interview to
publicize our Design in Wood Exhibition.
Pat Kowalski and Roberto Weinstein deserve dual
recognition.

Furniture in Museum collections of SouthernCalifornia
About two years ago, Mike did a presentation on
"Furniture Styles in History" with examples from
the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Continuing
with this theme, this month Mike will be presenting more examples of furniture styles, this time
from museums and exhibits in Southern California. Museums in the presentation will include the
Getty, Huntington Gallery, Los Angeles County
Museum of Art (LACMA), as well as other exhibits on display from San Diego Up to Central
California. For each location, Mike will go over
what can be found there as well as what you
shouldn't expect. We will go through the major
styles throughout history and see examples from
these museums and exhibits that are locally available for viewing to woodworkers who might
want to attempt to build something in one of the
styles. The meeting will be on Wednesday September 25 at 7:00PM in the Al Bahr Temple located at 5440 Kearny Mesa Rd. (behind the

Shop Tour
Lou and Deinna Adzima are two talented and hard
working people. I couldn’t make it to the shop tour
last Saturday so went a day early to get a look at this
incredible project. After finally finding the house,
or series of buildings, I started wandering around
looking for Lou. I found him, frantically cleaning
and organizing his woodshop. Actually Lou and
Deinna have a series of shops— Wood, metal,
stained glass, photography, woodturning, painting
and ceramics. They are all housed in the back of the
property under this sign:
Despite the temperature which hovered around 130
degrees, I managed to follow Lou as he took me on
a tour of the extended shop and the estate. First we
saw the lathe room, currently pristine, but with
promise of many chips. The car, Lou explained,
With my incredible photographic skills, I managed
to capture most of the name of the “saloon” where
these two people spend a great deal of time, the “R
something and Spur.” Inside, which was a lot like
outside except for having a roof and seperat spaces,
I found the woodshop and evidently failed to take a
picture of it. Instead, I took two rather nice pictures
of my feet. But you can imagine it—table saw,
work bench, other tools here and there. Band saw
hovering in the corner. I did manage to take a picture of Lou outside his woodshop. Hew is standing
next to a DeWalt planer and a pass through sander
looking quite pleased.
Would eventually have to go. Despite impending
heat stroke, I followed Lou, who is not affected by
heat, into a lovely covered patio area where every
single thing, except the table, was done by Deinna.
Deinna, who is affected by heat, evidently never
comes out of the air conditioned house unless the
temperature is less than 110 degrees. She has limits
8
Shop Tour Continued
but only to her heat tolerance. The artistry is
without bounds.
Deinna’s response to a blank wall is to fill it with
art. Lou quails at the beginning of these projects.
He wants to begin small but Deinna moves directly to LARGE and the fun begins.
The candles on the table must be made of stone
because they did not melt as I staggered through.
Lou assured me it was a ‘dry heat’ and that my
inability to walk straight was probably just age
and not heat stroke. The pool was just on the other side of the patio and I considered leaping into
it. The bubbles warned me that this was currently
a cauldron and not a cooling pool. Finally I
ducked inside, met and embraced Air Conditioning in all its glory and met Deinna for the first
time. She was a good and kind hostess, offered
water immediately and showed me some of her
art work. We talked stained glass - she is an artist
with glass - and she also showed me some of her
ceramic work on the walls.
Lot5s of Moxie in this couple who are having the
time of their lives making their environment a
work of art.
Thanks for letting me—and the club—come and
see your place. Too bad if you missed out, but I
bet if you asked nicely, Lou and Deinna would
give you a private tour. Just wait ‘til it cools
down.

On Rules
There are scads of rules in life. Rules of the
road to keep us safe, rules of-the house, some
sensible, some not so much. Keep the toilet lid
down is a rule, but why not up? We compromise
at my house. The upstairs toilet always has its lid
up and the downstairs one is lid down. Rules to
keep the dinner table a pleasant place. TV off,
phones not answered, conversation pleasant, and
only on rare occasion can one hork chewed peas
or milk thru the nose after an unexpectedly good
joke. And the rules at school. Never say 'nipple'
while teaching. Don't turn your back on students,
keep the lesson lively.
But it is the rules of carpentry, of the shop I
want to address here. Machines come with rules,
loud rules in red and orange, emblazoned on their
surfaces. "Injury will occur if you place your
hands on the in-feed roller" or just "DANGER" or
"KEEP FINGERS CLEAR OF BLADE," a 'duh'
rule but a good one as a friend's recent experience
shows. Some very real dangers exist in wood
shops and rules regarding these tools are
reasonable.
crest rail 20”, four legs, not
tippy and so on.
I looked to Sam Maloof for
some guidance in chair design.
He warns that tools can have an
effect on the outcome of a chair. Using only
power tools doesn’t give the feel of handmade
work. But if you become a purist and use only
hand tools, you might starve to death. He quoted
Wharton Eshrick who said “I use any tool that'll
do the job. If I have to use my teeth, I use my
teeth."
So what are the rules of chairs? Del Cover
showed us a chair that looked as if it fit a king. It
was truly regal but perhaps lacked comfort.
Maloof’s chairs look homey and inviting. Eric
Freyer’s chairs have some of the quality of Sam
Maloof chairs, but are a bit more flowery.
Even hand tools have rules. Generally they are
common sense rules, but some are rules learned
from elders or from experience. Don't plane

the western U.S. Discount
subscription rate to SDFWA members. $10 for one year and $18 for
two years.
The Woodworking Store, piloted by Mike Durlak, is doing a marvelous job of teaching woodworking. I think we are all aware of the need for teachers of our craft. Palomar College and some local
high schools have programs that help their students learn woodworking but they are not available
to everyone. Every week, Mike and his learned crew at the Woodworking Store on Clairemont
Mesa Blvd. put on classes. Sign up for their email, attend classes and learn. The bonus is that they
can sell you the tools and equipment you need to complete the project you just learned how to
make. You can’t beat that with a stick!
