R15 - MetroStars vs Blue Eagles
METROSTARS vs BLUE EAGLES
Sports Director
President’s Report Saturday 21 July vs Blue Eagles
A warm welcome to all our friends from Adelaide Blue
Eagles. ABE is always a great test for us and today will
be no different with our boys needing to reverse the
result in the first round.
Recent form for both Clubs has been interesting to say the least but
both Clubs are sitting comfortably in the Top 5 notwithstanding a long
list of injuries. It comes as no surprise then that our game today should
once again be a much anticipated blockbuster particularly given the precarious nature of the top 7 teams at this stage of the season.
I congratulate all three Metro teams for comfortably progressing to the
semi final Round of the Coca Cola Federation Cup, which will be played
on the 4th August at Burton. Interestingly enough, the Seniors have
been drawn White City. Last time the Clubs meet in finals was in 2005
which White City won ending a long winning streak for us. White City
did go on to win the Cup that year. It was a game that was remembered
for all the wrong reasons. Lets hope we can finally excise some demons. Please support your teams.
Finally, I would like to recognise and congratulate all our junior players
that have been selected in the FFSA Development programs & teams for
2013. Foremost, congratulations to Stefan Cali how has been selected
by Adelaide United to travel as part of the youth Weifang Cup squad to
China in August. Well done Stefan, we wish you well.
Good luck to all Metro teams today.

We welcome Blue Eagles and the current champions to TK Shutter Reserve. Both sides enter this fixture coming off mixed results
over the last month and we know The Azzurri will come to redeem
themselves from last weeks cup loss to Para Hills. Their depth and
stature as a “Power House” in SA Football keeps us knowing that
last weeks result mean nothing in the context of todays game.
Last week provided the opportunity to blood another youngster
with Stef Cali making his debut in the cup round and the weeks
earlier providing opportunity for Christian Parente to also make his starting debut. The
club is definitely showing signs that the next era of senior players is ready to unfold. The
Challenge now is to find the balance of producing players and keeping the club pushing
for Silverware.
Lee Roberston has been a stand out for us over the last month with his leadership, voice
and ability to read the game crucial in providing energy at trainings as well as games.
Every successful side relies on their leaders and Lee has stepped up to side of the role.
With younger guys coming through, they can only learn from Lee’s application. This leadership is crucial for this year’s challenge at the title and to mentor our next crop of players. We have had Adam Van Dommele find his form over the last few weeks after having
a testing season battling injury and he has also added another dimension to our leadership stocks.
From a coaching point of view we have directed a new responsibility onto the players to
succeed and the leadership of our 2 captains are invaluable to making this happen.
Responsibility comes to those who wear the MetroStars Guernsey.

“I am fortunate that I am at
MetroStars who believes and aspires
towards youth development ”
Ernie Luongo has been an integral part of MetroStars since
2003 and has driven the club’s commitment to the development of young players’ skills with the club’s development
squads. He had extensive coaching experience with Croydon Kings and Adelaide City before joining MetroStars and
he is now using this experience to further his passion for the
development of young soccer players.
Since 2004 Ernie has run the Shooting Stars development
squad at MetroStars, using his expertise to shape the up and
coming young players at MetroStars to be the best. He has
now also established Rising Stars and All Stars development
squads as a means of continuing to support promising players through their careers.
Ernie is a highly respected and admired player and coach
within the soccer community, having played at a National
Level for Adelaide City as well as playing for and coaching
State teams, and he credits his experiences with putting him
in good stead as a coach now. He began in juniors at Polonia Soccer Club (Croydon) where he says the Kolecki Brothers “guided and shaped my career as a player and as a
future coach”. He was also involved in many state teams as
a player, representing South Australia at Junior and Senior
levels which he says also gave him a good foundation for his
future career.
With his junior beginnings at Polonia, Ernie then extended
his soccer skills through developmental groups at Adelaide
City. He says, “These groups had some wonderful project
players who excelled to many heights in their playing careers. Through these young and inspiring groups many
players had gone to the next level at Adelaide City and overseas (Rale Rasic, Zoran Matic, Bobby Ferguson, Jim Muir
and John Perin being a huge influence during the 80s with
professionalism and the importance of ball mastery and
game awareness) and had made me the player and coach
that the modern era is needing at this point of time.”
As a player, opportunities continued to arise for Ernie while
playing and training for Adelaide City National League.
“Experience was gained and stored while playing alongside
AlexTobin, Neville Flounders, Bugsy Nyskovas, Aurellio
Vidmar, Sergio Melta,Paul Wilde, Steve Maxwell, William
McNally (GK) Joe Mullen, Charlie Villani, Paul Shillabeer,
Colin Miller, Paul Higgins… and the list goes on. As time
grew older and generations changed through clubs it was
time to extend myself with new knowledge and experience”.
Playing under Martyn Crook, Joe Larecki, and Paul Pettit,
Ernie’s game reached new heights and he developed leadership skills and a direction towards players that eventually led
to his coaching. “Being Captain and playing in seniors gave
me this spring board that players of all ages and abilities
need attention and guidance that will follow through in future
years of their careers as a football player or as a memory
that can guide to any pathway that he or she leads”.
This vision of Ernie’s would one day lead to the start of a
new development squad called Shooting Stars, which has
now been successfully running for 8 years at MetroStars.
“Through years of experience as a player and a senior and
junior coach at MetroStars, my thoughts and heart have
been geared to mould and shape a Junior come Senior
model for all to see and envisage, with a football pathway
that leads from the very young to the very experienced player and coach at MetroStars” says Ernie.
Shooting Stars is a development squad for Metro players
between the ages of 4 to 7 years old. The philosophy of
Shooting Stars is for it to be a, “foundation base where players at MetroStars are learning to master the ball, to discover
the small intricate ways of having fun, but also are guided by
instruction and drills that will hold any player in readiness for
Juniors and to Seniors in years to come. This guidance has
also incorporated guidance for coaches to follow through
with being part of this MetroStars journey” says Ernie.
As players grow and are a part of MetroStars there is now
exciting opportunity to continue their development through
development groups for older ages. Rising Stars is now
running for age groups 11s 12s 13s 14s 15s with the hope
these players progress on to the All Stars project players
groups. This is all under Ernie’s vision of the importance of
continued progression and guidance for MetroStars players
so that they have a fantastic football future at MetroStars.

Today we welcome Adelaide Blue Eagles for what will be another great
battle.
Since our last home game were we lost to Adelaide City the team has
come of age and has played some fantastic football. With bad weather
forcing the federation to re-schedule some games we now need to play 4
games in 11 days.
Games against NTC & Raiders were a pleasure to watch where the boys played great possession football and came away with well deserved victories.
Our quarter final cup game was a hard fought battle against a determined Cumberland , the
boys held it together, especially in the last 15 minutes when we were reduced to 10 men.
We played our first catch up game midweek against Croydon and once again the team played
a great game of possession football and came away with a 4-0 victory. Congratulations to Zampi for scoring a hat trick and also to Christian Parente for putting away a well timed chip over
the keeper.
Well done to all the boys and let’s keep the momentum going.
Good Luck to all 3 senior teams today

MEET OUR…
Continued…..
(Picture right, Ernie in his playing days at Polonia (Croydon))
Ernie’s goal for the players who are a part of his squads is to
instill in them at a very young age, the skill of mastering the
ball and enjoying the world game. He explains his vision for
his players is to be installed with hours and hours of touching
the ball with the understanding of repetition in a challenging
and enjoyable way. “To not only develop the awareness of
the technical skills but also be aware of the game”, he says.
“The future at MetroStars football development is very
bright!” says Ernie. This vision had started 8 years ago knowing that the key to success is to build a solid foundation and
to construct a future for all with a strong ethos for football
development at MetroStars. Now with the success of Shooting Stars, Rising Stars and All Stars, Ernie is excited by the
future potential of young MetroStars players.
He says, “I am fortunate that I am at MetroStars who believes and aspires towards youth development. Great players
have come through MetroStars and into SASI, Skillaroos,
Football Aquistion and Baby Reds programs and I'
m pleased
to hear and see MetroStars football Development is growing
at a rapid rate”.
“MetroStars is for all players within the community and
around the world. We welcome any member to be part of this
wonderful journey that has begun at MetroStars. Shooting
Stars to Rising Stars and eventually to All Stars, football
developmental groups are for MetroStars players. Discussions do take place on a regular basis via emails, texting ,mobile calls, skyping, to further extend knowledge too
all players and coaches”, Ernie Luongo.
“You just can't beat the person that never
gives up.”
- Babe Ruth
After a 2 weeks absence of postponed games we finally got back on track with
another draw (still trying to get over it).
Forward 1 week and it was pleasing to watch the boys win 3-0 against Cumberland and progress into the semi’s.
A big thank you also should be mentioned to Rino for not cup tying any of the
lads(just remember that for the semis..lol)
Again I wish to reiterate the progression of these boys as the season progresses. Their training intensity is still at a match day standard and I couldn’t be any
more proud of the lads.
Good luck to all senior teams ....
