COMPANION
Summer 2015
Free Pet Food Pantry
The Camden County Animal Alliance now offers free
pet pantry food services to community members. This
food assistance program is designed to keep beloved
pets in their homes by offering free food for cats and
dogs in the community. As owner surrender numbers
increase at our local shelters for various reasons, the
animal alliance wants pet owners to succeed with
keeping pets in homes with the assistance of free food.

Why Microchips Matter
Doc, the cat, was adopted to a family in Pennsylvania from a rescue. Doc went
missing for approximately a year and his family was devastated. Doc was found
in Camden County and brought into our facility as a stray. When CCAS staff did
an intake exam on Doc, they discovered that Doc had a microchip. Staff got Doc’s
microchip number and worked hard to track it back to the original rescue he was
adopted from. The rescue knew the owners have been searching for Doc over the
last year and contacted them. Doc’s family came to CCAS and they were reunited
after a whole year. Doc and his family are back together thanks to his microchip!
Is your pet microchipped? Visit www.ccasnj.org for our walk-in clinic schedule to get

Expansion Excitement
The Camden County Board of Freeholders expansion
to Camden County Animal Shelter has ramped up!
The $1.5 million project is underway and Freeholder
Michelle Gentek, liaison to the shelter, said they’re
feeling good about its future. “It’s so exciting to
finally see it coming together,” she said as they
checked out the construction scene adjacent to the
existing building on County House Road in Gloucester
Township.
The 3,500 square-feet expansion will house a front
desk and welcoming area that will become the
Executive Director, Vicki
public’s new access point for adoptions. The current
Rowland, in the future
entrance will remain open for our low-cost, public
kennel run for dogs
pet vaccine and surgery clinic. The expansion will
also include an open cattery and private meeting
rooms for potential adopters and our animals. These
meeting areas will allow families one-on-one time
with our animals to find the right fit for their family. Once the expansion is wrapped up at the end of the
summer, Camden County Animal Shelter’s capacity will grow to include 50 more cats and 30 more dogs. The
shelter currently houses 250 cats and over 100 dogs, and 100 cats off-site at satellite locations like Petsmart
and Petco. “Saving lives is always the goal,” says executive director, Vicki Rowland.
Jax’s Journey – Happy Tails
The Yacavone family came to Camden County Animal Shelter
on April 18, 2015 for a companion for their family and most
importantly, their 2-year-old son Joey. The Yacavone’s adopted
their last dog, Jasper, from CCAS 10 years ago and after waiting
some time, they decided to find a new dog for their family.
Once the family met Jax, now Jack, they knew he was the
perfect fit. His happy-go-lucky personality
was irresistible! Jack is now the king of
Jack, formally Jax with
the house and loves getting kisses from
his 2-year-old human
his human brother, Joey!
brother, Joey Yacavone.

Foster with us
A foster care provider volunteers
for Camden County Animal
Shelter to provide caring
temporary homes to pets that
need individualized attention
or a little extra love. With
the summer months upon us,
fostering is vital to saving the
lives of our animals. We receive
many young kittens and puppies
that are too young to be living
in our environment. Not only
are they young but they may be
recovering from illness or surgery
and in need of socialization before
being placed in a forever home.
Foster volunteers are critical to
our ability to save the lives of
adoptable pets in our community.
This allows us to expand our
capacity to help animals that
are in need. The benefits to
becoming a foster parent come
from directly helping to save a
life! Foster parents take part
in a bond without long-term
commitment, help the dog find
a new loving home, and give the
animals a gift that money can’t
buy – your love!

Adoption Spotlight:
Meet Guacamole &
Serenity!
This 2-year-old adorable boy is sweet and spunky.
He would love a jogging buddy or a big backyard
to play in. Guac is people pleaser and can’t wait to
learn new things! His big smile is sure to light up
your day!
Meet Serenity! Serenity means peaceful, and
that really describes this girl perfectly. She was a
stray in March and is about 8 years old. Serenity
is front declawed and has beautiful muted colors
in her fur, but best of all she is very sweet and
affectionate. She is calm and outgoing, with
curiosity thrown in for good measure. Serenity is
one great cat that deserves a great forever home.
