Walking
TOUR
Walking around PELLA is the best way to immerse yourself in its history, culture and charm. Among the more celebrated
attractions and landmarks are countless small wonders that will tempt the historian, the shopper, the diner, and the
curious child in you. So don your walking shoes and enjoy a self-guided walking tour of our Dutch village!
Begin your tour at the 1 PELLA VISITORS CENTER (818 Washington) where you will be warmly
welcomed and armed with maps and other useful information. From there, you will hike east on Washington Street to the
2 SCHOLTE HOUSE MUSEUM & GARDENS (728 Washington) where you will be able to take
an historic tour of the original founder, Dominie Peter Scholte's, splendid 23-room mansion, as well as meander through
breathtaking gardens and well-kept paths behind the house and snap a photo of artfully rendered sculptures.
Stroll south across Washington Street through Pella's shaded and flower-adorned 3 CENTRAL PARK where you
pass a tiered fountain, a massive armillary sundial flanked by a circular flower bed, a Civil War statue, a WWII cannon, our
information windmill and the 65-foot high 4 TULIP TOREN (Dutch for tower) which presides over the south side
of the block. This tower was erected in 1968 and is the site of the annual Tulip Queen coronation in early May during Pella's
popular Tulip Festival. Over 20,000 tulip bulbs are planted each year in Central Park alone.
Saunter either way along Franklin and Main Streets and you will be able to dip into many charming shops, bakeries, meat
markets and eateries. As you gaze to the east on Franklin, you can't miss seeing the rotating blades of the largest working
grain windmill in the U.S., the 5 VERMEER MILL (Corner of East 1st and Franklin), which is connected to the
Interpretive Center and the block-square Historical Museum. Here in this historical complex, step back in time as you
stroll along flower-lined walking paths and tour over twenty historical buildings, including the 6 WYATT EARP
HOUSE and the stately, spired 7 SCHOLTE CHURCH, a cherished and imtimate site for weddings and
other celebrations.
After your tour of the Historical Museum, find you way back west towards downtown on Franklin, peek into the historic
8 PELLA OPERA HOUSE. Then take a quick left and stroll through the 9 KLOKKENSPEL's brick
courtyard where you can look up and watch mechanical Dutch figures perform to the music of a 147-bell carillon. As you
walk south past more alluring flower beds, you will emerge into the
MOLENGRACHT CANAL area - an
impressive grouping of European-inspired buildings graced by a Dutch canal and a working drawbridge.
Walking west along the canal, toward Main Street, and glancing to the south, you will see the PUBLIC SAFETY
FIREHOUSE MUSEUM to the east and the beautiful PELLA
COMPLEX and the historic
PUBLIC LIBRARY to the west. Turn back north on Main to complete your walking tour, meandering through
Central Park back to your starting point.
Check out more details on these attractions by going to our listings on page 36. Follow the route by referring to the
downtown map in this activity guide.

How about spending two or three days in our quaint Dutch village during the Holidays?
It's hard to beat the feeling of magic in the air as you spend time in Pella
during the Holidays. You will experience a good dose of small-town nostalgia–
a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of the season–and will be
treated to reminders of our beloved Dutch Heritage while you experience our
warm hospitality.
The Monday before Thanksgiving, enjoy shopping and sampling Christmas
goodies in Pella's charming shops and boutiques for the Tour of Stores (de
Kerstdagen). As part of the festivities, the official Tree Lighting Ceremony will take
place that evening on the stage of the Tulip Toren in Central Park.
The first weekend in December holds the much-anticipated Christmas Tour
of Homes, which gives you the opportunity to tour several lavishly decorated
homes and be treated to a traditional Dutch coffee time or hors d'ouevres
Reception in the historic Pella Opera House.

TYPES OF FISH AT
LAKE RED ROCK
WALLEYE
Fish along the old river channel where the water depth
drops off and along the face of the dam where sand rock
meets mud and grass. Also fish the river during cold weather
months. Back trolling crank baits can provide fast action.
TYPES OF FISH AT LAKE RED ROCK
LARGEMOUTH BASS
Fish the rocks around the Marina point, the face of the dam
among the rocks and off of the old Wallashuck boat ramp.
CRAPPIE
Fish around underwater structures, brushy areas, Roberts
Creek viaduct, near bridge pilings at the upper end of the
lake, and the Whitebreast Creek shallows prior to spawning.
Use jigs and minnows for bait.
WHITE BASS
Fish the Whitebreast Creek shallows during spawning.
In August there is a two-week time period when they are
extremely easy to catch at locations like Marina point,
Whitebreast point and any rocky shoreline. During other times
of the year fish in the tailwater areas below the dam. Use 1/4,
1/8 or 1/16 oz. white and or yellow jigs in tandem for bait.
NORTHERN PIKE
Fish in the Tailwater areas and use large lures with lots of flash
such as spoons or crankbaits and a fast retrieve. Floating jigs
with chubs or large minnows are effective in the spring.
CHANNEL CATFISH
Fish areas just above cut banks, snags, rocks and other
submerged structures on the lake and in the river.
Use cut bait or dead minnows during late winter and
spring and use a prepared stink bait during the summer
months when the lake is stable or rising.
FLATHEAD CATFISH
Fish with small sunfish under cut banks and holes on the
river after dark.crank baits can provide fast action.
