THE PBL EAGLE
New Member Edition
Members of The Month
Katie Hazelbach and Kathryn Cochet
The spring semester recruitment week went off without a hitch and
there are two important people that made sure everything went
smoothly. Katie Hazelbach and Kathryn Cochet did a great job as
co-recruitment chairs! They worked very hard to make sure that
students at Pitt knew about Phi Beta Lambda and were eager to join
through their publicity efforts.
Their enthusiasm and love for PBL was apparent throughout the
week. They chose great speakers like Katie Kramer and Casey
Pacifico to engage new members at Information Session. They also
asked our own PDC, Matt Michaels, and Mentor Team Laura Faust
and Lucas Walkowski to present on resume and interview success
tips. Their choice of presenters enhanced what Kathryn and Katie
had preached throughout the week: professionalism and PBL pride.
Perhaps, their most impressive decision was to have game night in
Nordy’s Place for the first time ever. It gave the recruits a chance to
bond with PBL members and see who really had the best dance
moves. It was a great piece of the week.
Throughout the week both Katie and Kathryn comforted nervous
recruits and clarified the uncountable questions. Interview day went
well and they kept the day on schedule! Their energy and
welcoming demeanor encouraged the recruits during interview day.
They created a friendly environment in the waiting room that made
the interviewees feel comfortable. Because of Katie and Kathryn,
PBL gained 13 impressive new members! Congrats to our members
of the month Katie and Kathryn!

Business Tip for the Month!
Put technology down and network face-to-face! Emails and phone calls are great tools, but
nothing beats a personal connection with a recruiter.

Congratulations to our newest PBL Members!
Becoming a member of Phi Beta Lambda is an amazing accomplishment. It’s definitely not easy
to come up to people you’ve never met before and talk to them all week, but it’s truly great
practice for what you’ll encounter in your future careers. PBL strives to create the most
professional members of Pitt’s College of Business Administration and you are now one of Pitt’s
Business Leaders. After an extremely competitive recruitment process, the Leadership Team saw
potential or existing professionalism in each and every one of you. We are very excited to have
you all in Phi Beta Lambda, and we hope that you get as much out of our organization as
possible. We love having fun, but remember that requirements are very important, too!!! We
expect you to maintain and exceed these requirements to make sure that you get involved in PBL
and grow as a professional, student, and member of Pitt’s community! By putting the effort in,
you will gain experience, opportunities, and lifelong friends. Again, congratulations and
welcome to Phi Beta Lambda!
Olivia Pascazi
I was born and raised in Butler, PA, and went Butler Area High School, where I pursued
my two passions: playing the trumpet and participating in musical theatre. I also
participated in indoor soccer, track and field, and ultimate frisbee. I am currently
undecided but I am most likely going to pursue a degree in marketing with a minor in
music and hopefully CPLE. I am very excited to join PBL and can't wait to see what lies
ahead!
Mike Adams
I am a freshman and I am from Allentown, PA. I'm majoring in Supply Chain Management
and I am considering a degree in Business Information Systems. I'm a member of Pitt DECA
and Pitt Habitat for Humanity and I'm looking forward to getting involved in PBL as well. In
my free time I love playing sports, soccer and tennis mostly, and watching movies. I'm living
on the LLC at Sutherland. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and I can't wait to start
my membership in PBL.
Anna Nelms
I'm from Dripping Springs, Texas. I am currently a freshman living on the Competitive Edge
Community up at Sutherland. I intend to major in Finance and possibly double major in
Marketing or Human Resources. I also want to pursue a Spanish Minor and the CPIB. I'm a
member of Habitat for Humanity and Women in Business. Dance has always been my
passion. I recently joined intramural soccer and volleyball teams… despite my lack of skill.
Haley Ketchell
I'm a freshman from Gibsonia, PA (about 15 miles north of Pittsburgh) and I'm looking to
pursue a degree in marketing. I plan to complete the CPIB and hopefully the CPLE, too! I
really love spending time with my family and friends, shopping, singing and making art. I'm
a crazy dog lover, so if you are too I guarantee we'll be best friends. I'm so excited to be a
member of PBL and can't wait to see what it has in store for me!

I am from Nazareth, Pennsylvania and I am currently a freshman at the University of
Pittsburgh, pursuing a Marketing degree as well as a certificate in Public and Professional
Writing. I truly want to make the most out of my experience here at Pitt and wish to get as
involved as possible which is why I am thrilled to now be considered a member of Pitt’s
Phi Beta Lambda! I am also currently training for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon this spring
and hope to run the whole marathon next year!
Sarah Stonebraker
I am a freshman at Pitt who is pursuing a major in finance, a minor in French, and a
certificate in international business. I am originally from Weirton, WV and live in
Holland Hall. For fun I like to play tennis and hang out with my floor.
Brad Hartshorne
I was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama and moved to York, Pennsylvania in 2008.
I am a freshman accounting major at the University of Pittsburgh. I’ve been active in
many volunteer organizations like Best Buddies and Habitat for Humanity and works at
the Country Club of York during breaks. In my free time I enjoys playing volleyball and
billiards with friends.
Kingsley Brown
I am a sophomore finance major with a minor in economics. I currently live up the hill in
Panther Hall, however next year I am living on Atwood (coincedentally right above Aimee).
Movie watching has become a big hobby of mine this past year, and my roommates and I plan
on starting a Pitt Movie Club this semester. I am also a Seattle Seahawks fan, so hopefully they
win the Super Bowl this year. In the future, I plan on getting involved with the stock market
and enhancing my professional business skills with the help of PBL. I have met a fair amount
of you already and I'm hoping to get to know everyone better in the next few weeks!
Steve Lewis
I'm a sophomore finance and accounting major with minors in German and economics. I was
born and raised in Bucks County, PA, and I hope to work in that area after college. I'm a huge
sports fan, and, despite my upbringing with the Eagles, I'm a die-hard supporter of Tony
Romo and the Dallas Cowboys - and don't even try to tell me that Romo is not a great QB,
because you're wrong. In my free time I enjoy reading, playing racquetball, and watching
anything with Will Ferrell. I'm excited to join PBL and look forward to meeting you all.
Jennifer Sommer
I am a freshman in CBA that is currently studying General Business in the College of
Business and Computer Science in the College of Arts and Sciences. I am originally from
San Diego, California. In my spare time I intern for Habitat for Humanity Allegheny
Valley and swims. I am so excited to join PBL!

Ultimately, my dream would be to live and work in another country,
or at the very least
travel a lot in my job. And although I haven’t had any pets besides a fish, I love animals,
excluding snakes and spider of course. I’m really excited about PBL and can’t wait to get
to know all of you.
Grant Jacoby
My name is Grant Jacoby and I love hiking, music (ask me about music any time,
definitely tell me about up-coming concerts), and Pittsburgh sports--GO PENS! But other
than that I’m really into entrepreneurship and I plan to own a hiking store one day. I’ve
hiked in Northern Canada tundra’s, New Mexico deserts, and allPellentesque:
over the Appalachian
Trail. I’m pretty sure I am going to find a way to work for Patagonia or North-face if I can
find a way. I love movies too, so if you are ever watching a good indie film let me know. I
am excited to be a part of PBL and I hope to meet every one of you!
Laura Baric Tarnow
I am a freshman in CBA, majoring in finance and possibly minoring in marketing. I aspire
to become an event coordinator, and I have a passion for real estate. I enjoy mission trips
and have become very involved in my community’s youth group. On a beautiful day, it is
very likely to find me jumping out of a plane, for one of my favorite hobbies is skydiving.
Consectetuer:
Once again, welcome to PBL. We’re
looking forward to an amazing Spring
semester!

From the Desk of Candy Ramsbottom
Dearest Recruits,
I am writing this letter to congratulate you on your entrance into the most amazing organization on
campus. Even though you got in and for some unfathomable reason I did not (even though I had my lucky
minion), you must be very proud and excited to begin this journey. Don’t worry that you lack my awesome
fashion sense, witticism, and overall dazzling aura, I’m sure you will be somewhat successful in your life. I
know deep inside that I am a role model with un-paralleled leadership skills and that you all secretly want
to be me. Jealousy suits you. I hope that this experience has been beneficial to you and that you have
learned so much from me. With a little polishing from moi, you will certainly be CBA’s finest. Best of luck
in all future endeavors and see you at recruitment next fall! I may even find it in me to forgive you all for
taking my spot of which I obviously deserved. Don’t hold your breath.
Hugs and Kisses, Candy
Recruitment in Raving Reviews
Another successful Recruitment Week is in the books thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Public
Relations team and co-Recruitment Chairs Kathryn Cochet and Katie Hazelbach. The week began with the
usual Information session, designed to show recruits what Phi Beta Lambda is all about. Three guest
speakers who exude PBL values were hand-selected to share their experiences with those in attendance:
Katie Kramer, Casey Pacifico, and alumnus Denise He. Following was Meet-the-Members night, which
enabled recruits to speed date with the current PBL membership. The event ran smoothly thanks to Dom
D’Ambrosio graciously lending his megaphone. Recruits had approximately two minutes per round,
enabling them to break the ice and get comfortable with the recruitment process.
Thursday night marked the annual Resume workshop where the recruits learned how to perfect their
resumes and “get the interview.” Matt Michaels led the session with his PDC skills and offered invaluable
advice to underclassmen. Additionally, Laura Faust and Lucas Walkowski provided comic relief with
their skit on interview do’s and don’ts. As PBL interviews were rapidly approaching, it was important to
offer some coaching on the topic. Both Lucas and Laura did a phenomenal job creating the skit and
providing fodder for discussion amongst the recruits.
The week came to a head with the final event, Game Night. For the first time, it was held in Nordy’s
Place. Recruits and current members bonded over Apples to Apples as well as a Wii tournament
projected onto a gigantic screen courtesy of the William Pitt Union’s technologically savvy workers.
Round after round of cutthroat tennis ensued with grunts rivaling that of Maria Sharapova. Not to
mention the intense Just Dance competition leading up to it. Sean Boyle and Katie Hazelbach went headto-head on a particularly fierce round of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.” A rematch will be declared at a
later date.
On Saturday, Recruits arrived to Sennott decked out in their best business professional attire and ready to
impress. Throughout the entire process, the patient Leadership Team interviewed a total of 39 students.
Of that, 13 were granted membership. Congratulations to the newest members and welcome to the Phi
Beta Lambda family.
