Tank Tales is the official publication of the Aquarium Club of Lancaster County (ACLC). Ten issues of TankTales are published annually. Anyone using original material from any issue of Tank Tales must
return two (2) copies of the publication in which the article is published to our exchange editor listed below. The views expressed in any
material appearing in Tank Tales are those of the authors, and do not
necessarily express those of the ACLC.
The ACLC meets on the third Saturday of each month (except July and
August) at Bird-In-Hand Fire Co., 313 Enterprise Drive, Bird-In-Hand,
PA 17505. Meetings begin at 1:00 PM unless otherwise noted. Meetings usually are comprised of a program featuring a guest speaker,
door prizes, a mini fish auction, with a period allowed for mingling
and refreshments. The philosophy of the club is such that our activities
are interesting to both the novice and advanced hobbyist alike. An effort is made to keep business to a minimum at the general
meetings,with the board of directors meeting being held quarterly at a

BAP Report: Pseudocrenilabris multicolor victoriae
Egyptian Mouthbrooder

The different members of the "Egyptian Mouthbrooders complex" range through the various
water courses of Egypt, Rwanda, Uganda, Sudan,
Tanzania and Kenya.
The term "Egyptian Mouthbrooder" is applied to a
small complex of very similar species within the
genus Pseudocrenilabris. Among this complex of
species is included Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor
victoriae, this variant is caught within the lakes surrounding Lake Victoria such as Lake Albert . The
species is commonly found in streams, ponds and
lake tributaries along the southern sections of the
River Nile. The water is usually slow-moving or
completely still, and the fish are commonly found
around the stems of various aquatic plants or
under cover of floating vegetation. The recorded
maximum Standard Length size is 8 cms - a little
over 3 inches. Male fish are very aggressive towards one another and only one should be kept in
a harem situation with several females.
HUSBANDRY WITHIN HOME AQUARIA:
Many aquarists try to keep a single pair, and this
arrangement works well in a species only tank
measuring at least 24″ x 15″ x 12″ (60cm x 37.5cm
x 30cm)—71 litres or 18 gallons. However, if a
larger groups is to be maintained, then obviuosly
a larger aquarium will be required. A larger group
should be set up as a harem with a single male
and any number of females with suitable refuges.

provide caves, roots and pieces of driftwood. Any
combination of this suggested collection can all be
used. Although plants are not essential, I have
found that the fish appreciate the additional cover
even if they are plastic plants. A sand or fine gravel
substrate is the optimum tank floor covering as the
male will dig small pits as part of the spawning
cycle.
These different species should not be kept in the
same tanks as they are likely to hybridise.
I have found that it is wise and beneficial to do frequent water changes, and I often do anything up
to 60% of the water volume whilst "hoovering"
clean the substrate, and refill with cooler water
than the water in the tank. In the aquarium the
ideal range to keep any of the Pseudocrenilabris
genus is from 68°F to 79°F. I have enjoyed keeping this genus on numerous occasions over the
years, and each time they readily accept the general municipal tap water—modified with the advised dosage of water conditioner. These can be
very voracious consumers of most commercially
prepared flake foods, but ensure the diet is varied
with regular feedings of live and frozen foods.
For those of us wanting to keep Egyptian Mouthbrooders in a community arrangement then it is
essential to have as large a tank as is possible as
they can be aggressive towards other species especially those that inhabit the lower region of the
aquarium. Egyptian Mouthbrooders can be
housed with other small fish, including other dwarf
cichlids, catfish, loaches etc. you will need a large
tank. For smaller aquaria good tankmates include
African tetras and small surface dwelling species
such as hatchetfish.
Reproduction Ritual:
Males are usually a little larger than females and
are more colorful, especially when breeding. The
species is described as a maternal mouth-brooder
which means that the female deposits eggs that
the male fertilises and then the eggs are quickly
picked up by the female and held in her mouth to
brood until she releases them in to the tank. The
fish will breed over a fairly wide range of water parameters from slightly acidic (pH6.8) to slightly alkaline (pH 7.2), however, the temperature should
be close to 75F. My fish are conditioned on avariable high quality diet of frozen and live foods to
female. (Sometimes fertilisation occurs before the
female picks up the eggs as the fish circle quite
quickly). The male has one or more orange spots
on his anal fin, and it is hypothesised that this may
act as a kind of ‘dummy egg' (the egg spots) to attract the female to his vent. This sequence is repeated until the female is holding 5-50 eggs in her
buccal cavity of her mouth.
The female will brood the eggs in a chewing motion within her mouth for around 10-15 days, at
which point the free swimming fry are released.
The female will take the fry back into her mouth
for several days after initial release. They can be
fed brine shrimp nauplii, microworm and powdered
dried foods (I use "Your Food Stuff" Starter powder) from this point.

When the male has been brought into condition he
will begin to excavate a shallow pit in the soft substrate; he will display in and around this pit to females, enticing the ripe females to begin spawning
with him. it is not uncommon for the male to be
quite forceful in his seduction attempts, and that
is the reason it is preferable to spawn this genus
in a harem situation so that male’s attention is divided among the females.
Eventually a female will follow the male to his pit
(on occasion I have kept Pseudocrenilabris victoriae in a substrate free environment the pair compromise and utilise plants within the tank to create
a suitable reciptical), whereupon the male nuzzles
the female's vent, and it may be this that triggers
her to release the eggs. As the eggs are laid the
female immediately picks them up with her mouth
and then mouths the vent of the male, who then
releases some milt directly into the mouth of the

Re-Tanked
Recycling & Tips for the Fish Room

LED lights are all the rage right now. They use
less electricity than fluorescent and especially incandescent lighting and the bulbs last longer. Buying and LED aquarium light can be expensive and
cost prohibitive if trying to replace all your lights in
your fish room.
Some people have been making their own LED
aquarium hoods by buying do-it-your-self kits with
strips of LEDs, a transformer and wiring connectors and sticking them to the inside of a rain gutter.
If you’re not handy or don’t have the time to spend
to make one there is an alternative, which can be
even cheaper.
Do you have any old incandescent aquarium
hoods laying around? If not, you can buy used
ones at a fish auction for a dollar or two. Replace
the incandescent bulbs with screw-in type LED
bulbs. Yes, they make ones that will fit aquarium
hoods. There are several types that I’ve been trying in my fish room. One is described as a corncob bulb. They come in various lengths. The
longer the cylinder, the greater the amount of
LEDs will be on the bulb. I purchased these off the
internet from Amazon as cheap as $4. I’ve also
found a cylindrical bulb at Lowes for $11 but it only
has LEDs at the base instead of filling the cylinder
like the previously mentioned bulb. These were
surprisingly brighter than the corn cob bulbs.
There are also flame shaped bulbs that twinkle
which should fit aquarium hoods, which I haven’t
tried. I’ve been able to fit a few traditional style
lightbulbs in a few aquarium hoods, but most have
been too narrow to allow it.
Give this a try for a quick and easy solution to saving eletricity.

March brings a new participant to the
ACLC BAP program. Charles Vickery joins
us with spawns from two livebearers, the
ever-popular guppy and its less well-known
cousin the porthole livebearer. Joel Antkowiak brought us a spawn from a tiny but
obscure livebearer and another from a
small but very elegant Lake Tanganika cichlid. Alan Rollings and Karen Haas registered a spawn from a CARES goodeid,
popular in this club, and the Bresslers
spawned a Rivulus killifish, easy to breed
but uncommon in this area.
Breeder of the Year points are building only
slowly, with team Haas/Rollings leading in
both points and number of species, but not
by a lot. There’s still plenty of time for YOU
to crank up your breeding operation, supplement it with a couple Tank Tales spawning reports, and leap into the lead for one
or more of our 2016 BAP Breeder of the
Year trophies.

For the Club Challenge Championship, the totals of all club members who
have declared that club as their home club will be totaled.
Here is the point system:
The Aquarium Club of Lancaster County and the Cichlid Club of York post
this challenge – YOU CAN’T BEAT US! We feel so strongly about this that
we are putting our money where our mouths are. The ACLC and CCY will
give away all funds received as entry fees for this show – 25% will go to the
Individual Show Champion, and 75% will go to the Club Challenge
Champion. This could be a great way for your club to earn some recognition
and some operating funds.
The Keystone Challenge
The Keystone Clash will feature a 43 class All Species Show, including 16
classes for the CCY’s famous show “Clash of the Cichlids.” See the event
