Ferrara is a magical city where time
appears to have stopped. A hidden
city that reveals itself step by step as
we pass by its buildings and through
the squares and winding alleyways of
the historical centre. In this intimate
setting the very stones take on a life
of their own, and you can almost see
famous characters from history- Ariosto, Tasso,
Lucretia Borgia - and literature - the protagonists
of Bassani’s novels and accounts - disappearing just
around the corner.
A city in which the traces and vestiges of a
Renaissance and Medieval past have settled in
perfect harmony. This spirit is reflected at every
turn, in the splendid colours of the Castello
Estense (Estense Castle) ceilings, in the frescoes
of Palazzo Schifanoia, in the streets of the city,
under the shady porticoes, and in the lush gardens
and the great green parks.
Ferrara, “a Renaissance city and its Po Delta”, has
been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in
recognition of the high cultural value of the city
and of its surroundings.
4
Ferrara is rich in evocative
places that have, over time,
become a characteristic
feature of several of the most
important events held in
the city, which accompany
the visitor along a stroll in
the Renaissance Addizione
Erculae (the “new” town
planned by the Este family in
the late 15th century), along
the verdant city walls and
through the wide, leafy Parco
Urbano (a large park just
outside the city walls).
A city that has learned how
to preserve and transmit its
tradition through art, opening itself
up to innovation and the ferment of a
programme of some of the most lively
events on the Italian scene.
The Palio, Ferrara sotto le Stelle,
Ferrara Buskers Festival, Ferrara
Balloons Festival, the Internazionale
a Ferrara, and the fireworks on the
Castello Estense (Estense Castle) to
celebrate the New Year are just some
of the exciting and memorable events
on Ferrara’s annual calendar that
fi ll the city with sights, sounds and
spectacular colours.

Museo del Castello Estense (Estense Castle Museum)
Palazzo Schifanoia
(A Renaissance palace built for the Este family)
The old Este family residence, a
symbol of entertainment and the
power of the court, is one of the most
precious art treasures of the city. Its
name, Schifanoia, derives from its
original function: “schifare la noia”,
to banish boredom.
Constructed from 1385 onwards, its
first floor houses the celebrated Cycle
of Months painted by Francesco del
Cossa, Ercole de’ Roberti and other
artists of the Ferrara school.

In 1385 a dangerous revolt convinced
Marquis Niccolò II of the ne e d

lords: this was how Castello di San
Michele came into being.
A century later, the castle became the
magnificent residence of the Este court,
and was accordingly embellished with
grand roof terraces atop the towers,
fine marble balconies and splendid
apartments, which can still be visited
today on a tour of the castle.
