With Homecoming only days
away, decorations are beginning
to line the halls and excitement
is rising. Many Crestview High
School Alumni educators share
their memories of the famed
event. Mrs. Kolb, our Front Office
Receptionist, graduated in 1977.
“We would skip school all week
to cut firewood for the huge bonfire on the Thursday before Homecoming. Each class had their own
fire to build and the class with the
biggest bonfire won,” said Kolb.
Kolb goes on to say that everyone participated in making the
floats, and that many students
had to take turns working on it.
“We had so many more freedoms back then,” jokes Kolb.
“This is probably the reason students don’t have as many today,”
Assistant Principal Mr. Day
graduated in the class of 1978,
only a year following Mrs. Kolb.
He told us of a time in Crestview
when everyone at a stop light
would know each other.
“There wasn’t much to do in
Crestview then, we used to sit in
the back parking lot of McDonald’s or Burger King to hang out.
We rode around town listening to
eight- track tapes,” said Day.
Also a fan of the disco, Mr. Day
loves to dance. He notes that
the dancing at Homecoming was
very different than it is today. Day
played as a half- back against
Chipley for Homecoming that
year, scoring three touchdowns
and thereby outscoring the opponent for the first time in four years.
English teacher Mrs. Ruschmeier recalls her days of being a CHS
cheerleader.
“The dance was the same night
as the game so we only had
about 30 minutes to get ready. It
used to be held at the Shoal River
Country Club,” said Ruschmeier.
The junior class of 1999 found
some mischief to engage in. They
decided to egg one of the Homecoming floats, but the attempt
failed, instead hitting the truck of
Chemistry teacher Mr. Cheney.
Mrs. Ruschmeier guarantees she
was not involved, being a senior
in the class of 98’.
When asked about the egging
incident, Mr. Cheney reveals that
he doesn’t remember it.
“It was a long time ago,” said
Cheney,” The real injustice was
that the freshmen float didn’t win
the contest. The theme was ‘Dogs
in Black’ and the freshmen created bulldogs dressed in black suits
with space guns shooting aliens.”
The theme was based on the
popular Men in Black movie released earlier the same year.
The start of football season is in
full swing and students and faculty are already preparing for this
year’s Homecoming extravaganza.
Our school’s theme is “Big
Lights, Big Cities,” including the
famous: Nashville, Honolulu, Hollywood, and Philadelphia.
Each class will work on a float
to show off their class spirit in the
parade on October 4 and later
that night before the big game.
We’ll be facing off against the
Leon Lions of Tallahassee. The
week of the game ‘Spirit Week’
, students will be dressing up in
costume each day to support the
team.
The halls will be decorated and
posters will be hung, pumping up
the excitement for a good win. Go

an advice column
11
Students have the opportunity to submit a situation or
concern they would like to be
given a word of advice on. The
submission box is located outside of the multi-purpose room
during all three lunch periods.
Students in the Journalism
class respond to the submitted
situations in this column.
Relationships
Dear Unsure Feelings,
The best way to tell if a guy likes you is to read his body language.
If he is often in close proximity to you or finding an excuse to touch or
talk to you, he is most likely interested in you. If you are still unsure, just
ask him. The worst thing he could say is “No.”
Sincerely, Penny
Dear Second Chance,
Always remember to believe someone when they show you who
they are the first time. There’s a possibility the same situation could reoccur so it’s up to you to determine the worth of a small amount of happiness in turn for more hurt.
Sincerely, Penny
Dear Possibly Unfaithful,
First of all, it’s not wrong to have concerns. Everyone that has ever
been in a relationship has had them. If you decide to approach him, make
sure the setting and time is right. Don’t make accusations about the situation. Just let him tell you his side of the story. Always remember to stay
calm. The girl in question could be trying to mislead you.
Sincerely, Penny
Dear Scared of Rejection,
Show him that you are interested in him by flirting with him or
texting him after school, but not to the point where he thinks you are
talking to him just to talk. Just try to get your point across. Go out of your
way to talk to him or walk with him in the hallway. If you still feel the
connection then he may feel the same. Rejection is a natural aspect of the
datng world and everyone will experience it in their lifetime, so spin it
into a lesson you can learn from.
Sincerely, Penny
Social
Dear How to Handle Drama,
Drama seems to be inevitable in high school, but that doesn’t
mean you have to experience it. If you find yourself tangled in a situation
that results in drama, don’t encourage the continuation of it. Step back
from what is causing it, wether it be a fight with a friend or boy/girlfriend
issues, don’t continue to talk about it with others. Make sure not to post
anything on social media sites that could add fuel to the flame. Lastly, try
to look at the situation from the other person’s perspective; you may find
that the issue wasn’t as monumental as you initially thought.
Sincerely, Penny
School
Dear Juggling School, Sports, and Extra Activities,
A good way to keep up with school and extracurricular activities
and still have a life is to have friends in your extra activities. Keep organized, schedule out the time you have for yourself, friends, and school
work. Make sure you’re balancing your time in a way that will benefit you
the most.
Sincerely, Penny
Dear Good Study Habits,
There are many effective ways to study for a test. Make sure you
don’t cram your studies the night before a test. Give yourself a sufficient
amount of time to thoroughly understand the information. Tutoring can
also be helpful, especially if you are not proficient in a subject. Note cards
are useful as well. You could write the topic on one side and the description of it on the other, that way you could quiz yourself. Study according
to how you learn, whether you’re auditory, visual, or hands-on.
Sincerely, Penny

Senator redefines
first amendment
To speak or be silenced?
Mia King | Paw Prints Writer
The first amendment allows
all citizens the right to freely
exercise the right to practice religion, to assemble peacefully,
and petition the government with
our grievances. Lastly, the first
amendment prohibits Congress
from making any law abridging
the previously mentioned rights
or the right of the press.
Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois,
also responsible for trying to redefine our right to bear arms, has
expressed he wants to redefine
who qualifies as a “real reporter” quoted from Durbin himself.
Also, he emerges with “Durbanisim”(Washington
Examiner),
similar to McCarthyism, which is
defined as ‘making unfair judgements or using unfair investigative techniques especially in order
to restrict dissent or political criticism’ but Durbin has reformulated
it to disguise the lack of legality,
by covering himself with claims of
“disclosure” and “accountability”.
The first place Durbin put this
into effect was with a letter he
sent to 300 groups that supported
the American Legislative Coun-
cil(ALEC). Oddly enough, ALEC
is a group of more conservative
state legislatures. Could Durbin
be trying to drain their funding by
scaring off their donors?
Durbin’s goal, in short, seems
to attempt to cut off anonymous
source journalism to stop people
from expressing their problems
with government through speech
or other various forms of media.
Does this infringe upon our right
of free speech as citizens? Are the
141 million twitter account holders
in the US classified as journalists,
as they randomly express themselves in 140 characters or less?
What about the 164 facebook users in the US, telling their friends
about their youngest daughter’s
dance recital, or where to go for
the best burger?
The Illinois senator is trying to
use his position as chairman of
the Judiciary Subcommittee on
Constitution, Civil Rights and Human rights to try to redefine the
first amendment. Durbin may very
well be taking every one of our
rights to free speech away. Why,
even this paper itself couldn’t be
in print.

Big Red Success
reaches milestone
Omayra Jordan | Paw Prints Writer
Crestview High School’s marching band is loved just as much
as the rest of our extracurricular
teams. This year marks the 75th
anniversary of the Big Red Machine.
“The band has progressed quickly. They are a smart and hard-working group,” says assistant band director Charles Anderson, “This is
the first year the band has learned
the entire half-time show.”
“They’re one of the smartest
groups we’ve had. They’re doing
very well,” says band director Jody
Dunn. Drum majors Foster Lux
and Tandrea Johnson have done a
terrific job conducting the band on
and off the field.
“I think it’s going to be a special
year. It’s nice being the oldest band
in Northwest Florida, it’s a wonderful achievement,” says Dunn.
To celebrate this special event,
an Alumni band will perform on
October 18th during the football
game.
This spring break the Big Red
Machine will perform at Carnegie
Hall and the Battleship Intrepid in
New York City. Congratulations on
the all of your accomplishments,
Big Red Machine!

Teacher Feature
For the upcoming 2013-2014
school year, we have not only
welcomed the 2017 class into
Crestview High School, but also
an array of new teachers as well.
Speaking for Crestview’s student
body, the Paw Prints Staff would
like to sincerely welcome all of
our new teachers to the staff and
school.
Ms. Hampton is a history teacher here at Crestview; she became a
teacher not only because she loves
history but also because she loves
being around kids and to become
a positive role model to girls. Like
most of us, Ms. Hampton has a
celebrity crush, Vin Diesel. She
absolutely loves Vin Diesel, she
loves his voice and his amazing
acting abilities.
Ms. Hampton also shared that if
she could have dinner with anyone in the world alive or dead it
would have to be her best friend.
Sean H. Miles was in the Marines
and was killed in action in Iraq
back in 2006. “He was a really
great person,” said Ms. Hampton,
“he even saved two lives.”.
Coach Watson, the coach of our
basketball and golf teams, went to
college at Lipscomb University in
Nashville. We asked him what the

last song he listened to was, and
he is a Florida Georgia Line fan,
saying he last listened to “Cruise”.
In high school he said he would’ve
fit in with the athletic type, but
was nice to everyone.
Mr. Peterson, a new teacher
in the history department, tells
Paw Prints that his favorite TV
show is Duck Dynasty. Like
his comedic favorite television
program, he was a class clown
in high school. However, don’t
let his love of comedy fool you
students, he can’t stand anyone
being late. Make sure you’re to
his class, in your seats on time.

How to survive High School
an editorial by Hannah Nolan
“Where shopping
is
a
pleasure.”
(850)682-0942
I’m a freshman this year, and it’s a little frightening being the ‘fresh meat’ at high school.
One of the issues I have is constantly being in the way and trying to navigate the halls. So
I talked to some upperclassmen and got advice on surviving high school. It’s most important to not procrastinate and to make new friends. Your ‘best friend’ from last year won’t
necessarily be at your side this year, they’ll make new friends and you should too. Senior,
Rebecca Morris says, “Always keep up with your grades and do your work.” Throughout
high school the worst thing you can do is procrastinate. You’ve got seven classes to keep
up with, and teachers hate it when you turn in assignments late. Having to constantly try
to catch up with work you’ve put off and work you’re getting will only be detrimental to
your grades. These tips have helped me through my first couple weeks of my freshman
year, try them out yourself and see how they work for you.

Danger Days
I Brought You My Bullets You
Brought Me Your Love
It was a fight to the bitter end
for the Bulldogs on September
6th against the former district rival
Choctawhatchee Indians.
Bulldog captains Khalil Foster
and Kyle Koontz chose to defer to
the second half, and Choctaw took
advantage of the early possession with a march down the field.
A fumble by the Indians in Bulldog
territory after the opening drive prevented any intitial damage, but the
Bulldogs were not able to score on
their end of the opening possession. The defense of both teams
continued to shut down the other’s
offense until a Choctaw touchdown
with just over a minute left in the
first quarter.
The Bulldogs were challened by
the pressure from the Choctaw defense, and were set back by several costly calls from the officials,
including a recalled touchdown.
When the bulldogs finally reached
the red zone, a fumble on the one
yard line cost Crestview their opportunity to make it onto the score
board. The score remained 7-0 in
favor of Choctaw until another Indian touchdown at the end of the first
half.
The Bulldog offense stepped up
their game to start the second half.
After a charge downfield, Emmanuel Reed made a touchdown within
the first three minutes of the third
quarter which put Crestview on the
board. The extra point was tacked
on by kicker Tyler Hancock to
make the score 14-7 in favor of the
Indians. The game progressed as
a trade of possessions as each defense continued to shut down any
drive down the field. With just over
three minutes left in the final quarter of play, Jaylynne Robinson added another six to the score board
on a 34 yard touchdown run. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the extra
point kick was blocked, and Choctaw held the one point lead with two
minutes left to play.
The Bulldog defense managed
to shut down the Choctaw offense
with a minute left to play, and the
Crestview offense was given one
last chance to pull off the victory.
With 44 seconds left on the clock,
the pressure from the Choctaw defense was too much and an interception in favor of Choctaw gave
the Indians possession as they set
up in v-formation for the win over
the Bulldogs.
Foster led the offense with 140
passing yards, while Reed led the
ground offense with 71 total yards,
and Robinson added another 42
to the running game. The defense
was led by seniors Kyle Koontz and
Justin Abdo.
