Swan Lake
Ballet’s greatest love story returns in Birmingham
Royal Ballet’s lavish production. This romantic fable
of ill-fated passion, powerfully illuminated by
Tchaikovsky’s legendary score, has bewitched
audiences for generations. By a moonlit lake, a
grieving prince witnesses the transformation of a
swan into a beautiful princess. Compelled by an
evil spell to spend her days in the form of a bird, she
can only be saved by the power of love. Filled with
exquisite ensembles, lyrical pas de deux and bravura
solos, this Swan Lake is atmospheric, romantic
and beautiful – an unforgettable experience.

award-winning production that stormed the West End in 2008.
Under the direction of Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Kate Prince,

of the original, with new choreography, a remixed soundtrack and fresh
designs. Set in the ‘Ruff Endz Estate’, the story follows two lost school
children who have been tasked to find an iPhone as white as milk,
trainers as pure as gold, a hoodie as red as blood and some weave
as yellow as corn. Along the way, they meet DJ Spinderella, aspiring
singer Lil Red, vivacious rapper Rap-on-Zel, budding music producer
Jaxx and embark upon a storybook adventure into the heart of a
pulsating community.

The original ballet is a timeless tale of love, heartbreak and redemption:
“It is a story that you find in some way in every culture, the woman
deceived who dies of a broken heart, and the spirit of this woman
that either forgives or seeks revenge”, says Rojo.
Don’t miss this unique interpretation of the iconic ballet.
Academy Award-winning designer Tim Yip, famous for his work on the
hit film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, will be creating a stunning set
design to the piece, while composer Ben Frost will create an adaptation
of the original score, performed by English National Ballet Philharmonic.
Direct from New York, under the leadership
of Artistic Director Robert Battle, Ailey
continues to wow audiences and critics
around the world. The all-star lineup will
include new works by some of today’s most
acclaimed choreographers, as well as Ailey
classics including the beloved crowd-pleaser
Revelations, the most widely-seen
modern dance work in the world.
See page 15 for details.
For Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of English National Ballet,
“Giselle is a ballet that lives in both the real and spiritual world; this
is why I thought it would be particularly appropriate for Akram Khan,
whose work often represents those two worlds”. Akram Khan agrees:
“I am eager to start the creation of Giselle. It is a beautiful and iconic
piece, and I am looking forward to bringing my own take on it”.
