LAKE HAUTO CLUB
NEWSLETTER
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
By George Mermon
I hope you had a great summer! The
beaches were more full than I’ve ever seen
them. Once again the sand mounds seem
to be a big hit with the kids – they WILL
be back again next year! Speaking of
beaches, I hope everyone who has used the
Eastwood Beach this year has been happy
with the improvements. The new drainage
around the beach has greatly reduced the
water (and mud) flow through the sand.
The cleanup of the area in general has
gone a long way to making Eastwood MUCH
more enjoyable. The basketball court has
been resealed and relined. The retaining
wall you can see around the tennis court
was installed to stabilize the corner that
sunk repeatedly over the past years. I
know we promised the Eastwood tennis
players a new court this year, but we
wanted to do it right. The ground needs
to settle over the winter, but next year I
will make it a priority to fit a new court
into next year’s budget. Also, we completed an overflow parking lot.
After seven years of putting up with sewer
smells from Oak Court to Eastwood, the
end is in sight. I was able to secure
$44,620 in financing for a solution. This
was accomplished through DEP’s Community
Environmental Project Program. Their innovative concept allows funds that would otherwise be paid to DEP as a civil penalty instead be redirected to a local community
environmental project that has public health
or environmental benefit. See the article
on page ten of this newsletter for all the
details.
I know the Board did not get to refurbish
the beach restrooms this year and I am
sorry that we didn’t. Dam activities and all
Lake Hauto Club
of the negativity towards this board has
wasted a lot of time and money. The
bathroom WILL BE topic number one when
we work on next year’s budget. We will
also be refurbishing some of the older
docks at Crescent.
You may have seen some drainage projects
on our streets and greenbelts. Years ago,
when the club had many more undeveloped lots, rain water could run through
these areas. As more and more houses
have been built, runoff has become a major
problem. Recently the club bought a used
backhoe, with the intention of doing drainage work ourselves. Our policy is that if a
property owner has a drainage problem,
and has the agreement of his neighbors,
the club will perform drainpipe installation
if the club member is willing to pay for
the required materials, which can be purchased through the club at its cost.
Needless to say, this has been the most
stressful year in the history of the club because of the issues surrounding the dam.
I, along with other Board members, have
been the target of repeated hate mail.
You must know that it was I, and other
board members, who have kept this lake
full. You should know that Lake Hauto is
the ONLY high hazard dam in Pennsylvania
that has been allowed to stay at full level
while under DEP mandated corrections. Our
neighbor, Sweet Arrow Lake is EMPTY!!! We
know there is no state or federal funding.
Rush Township has pledged to assist us and
I truly hope they fulfill their commitment.
We are running out of time to make these
decisions. Our engineering company is on
schedule.
I love Lake Hauto, and I will do ANYTHING
to keep it full of water. We must accept
our responsibilities. No matter where your
home is, it’s here because of Lake Hauto.

FISHING DERBY
By Phil Mylecraine
On Saturday May 19, we held our annual Fishing Derby for the children of Lake Hauto. We
had about one hundred and twenty-five youngsters come and try their luck on a truly fine
spring day. It appears that everybody caught a fish. We had put five hundred hungry fish
in the lake at the Crescent Beach docks at seven o’clock in the morning and the fishing
began at nine.
Some of the young anglers who caught the “big ones” were;
Matt Edmends caught a 19 inch trout for the biggest catch of the day.
Brandon Danko caught a 14-1/2” trout.
Logan Stano caught a 15-1/2” bass.
Joe Ferone caught the first fish of the day.
Kyle Smith was the first to catch the creel limit for the day.
Anthony Pilla caught a ten inch sun fish.
After everyone had had hot dogs, sodas and cookies, Paul Whitly was our Master of Ceremonies and awarded the prizes in some seventeen categories. By the time he was done

devising many other categories, everyone had a prize or two.
Of course this could not have happened except for the help of lots of people. Tom Drosey
and his good wife, Barbara, were the official measurers and counters, John and Rene Maceiunas supplied all the hot dogs and rolls and cooked them on Bob Davidovich’s professional
hot dog cooker. Leona Smith, Pauline Edwards, Mary-Beth Risteter, Elaine Hackenberg were
all very important to setting everything up and serving. David and Ginger GIammattei were
our registrars.
Bernice and I want to thank all of the people who contributed so many things to this day.
We were not as careful as we could have been and did not keep a detailed record of all
of the people who donated. Many came with deserts and so on for food.
In particular, we want to thank all of the people (and there were lots of them) who added
to our prize table. There were prizes of all kinds and shapes and it appears the children
had a fine pick when it came to their turn.
We are looking forward to doing it again next year and just hope that we can have as
good a day as we had last Saturday.

Young Johnny Owens said: “You should have stepping stoves in the crushed rocks so it
doesn’t hurt your feet walking from the beach to the bathrooms.” Maria Stans said:
“Maybe the crafters could make them this year.” I said: “It could be their contest.”
Each year the children have a creative contest. Bob Davidovich donated six 80 lb. Bags of
Sakrete concrete and Carl Cassler picked them up from Panther Valley Lumber. Charlie Sincavage, who was on vacation, lifted the bags, mixed the concrete and poured it into pans.
The children decorated the concrete and placed their names along with their designs made

Charlie.
Robert Stevens and Joe Pilla assisted
Will Boyer, posing as the sheriff, judged the slabs and prizes were picked by the winners.
The slabs were stored overnight and again Charlie Sincavage did something wonderful. He
carefully placed the slabs as stepping stones. So come to Oakwood Beach and see our
wonderful stepping stones from the sandy beach to the pavilion.
Medals and ribbons were designed and made by Maria Stans and Anne Marie Krajcir. Prizes for the children were bought and generously donated by Fran Watts and Betty Liebeck. Once again five weeks of Red
Cross swimming lessons and an excellent craft program have come to a conclusion.

Lots of Action at Oakwood Beach
We also completed a “Swim Across the Lake and Back” on August 5 at 8 A.M. There were
13 swimmers and six accompanying boats. Also, on August 19, the “Swim Down the Lake”
took place from Crescent Beach to the Breast of the Dam. The swimmers also got sponsors to donate money for our recreation program fund. This is voluntary.
This was the best summer yet. Katryna Kapunek, Dominic Agosti and Breanna Tirpak completed their advanced Swimmer Course (VII) by swimming continuously eight different
strokes for a non-stop two hours. Carla Diekman, Molly Frederick, Brent Homcha, Brittany
Homcha, Cailin McCullion and Caitlin Sagl all completed the Swimming Course (VI) by swimming continuously five different strokes for a non-stop one hour. Nicole Axelrod, Shelly
Hankins, Chris Pilla, John Pilla, Logan Stans, Nicole Thomas and Bobby Whitely all completed
Swimming Course (V) by swimming four different strokes a continuous one half hour. Josh
Arbogast, Nick Bevich, Cherise DiMelfi, Robert Knipper, John Owens, Anthony Pilla and Ellen

Andy Whitely all completed the Beginner Course (III). Ah yes! This was a wonderful year.
P.S. – If any swimmer wants to try his or her testing and due to circumstances did not –
call me at 5870. More than happy to go for a swim with you and we’ll give it a try!
Many thanks to Megan Watkins, Jill Kovolonik and Dan Thomas – Super Young People!
P.P.S. – Water Aerobics from 6 – 7 P.M. every Tuesday and Thursday at Oakwood Beach for
as long as we have leaders and exercisers. Thanks Kelly Owens.

Lake to Correct
Environmental Problem
By Jennifer Mikovich
The Lake Hauto Club recently received a
check for $44,620.00, from Silberline Manufacturing Company, Inc. to correct an odor
problem emanating from the community’s
sewer system.
The odor has been an environmental problem at Lake Hauto since the
installation of the sewer system in the early
1990’s. The money has been used by the
Club to purchase two biofilters from
Biocube, Inc. which will be connected to
the system at two strategic locations.
Biocube has assured the lake community
that the devices will eliminate the problem.
The money is being provided to the Club
through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Community Environmental Project program. DEP’s innovative concept allows funds that would otherwise be paid to DEP as a civil penalty to
be redirected to local community environmental projects that have a significant public health or environmental benefit.
Presentation of check at Silberline’s headquarters in Hometown from Tony Major, Silberline’s Vice-President of Operations to Club President, George Mermon. Looking on (left to
right) are Jennifer Mikovich, Environmental Officer for Silberline and Board Members, Joe Pilla, Club Treasurer and
Richard Brightman.
On July 9, 2001, Silberline entered into a
consent order and agreement with DEP concerning administrative violations of the Air
Pollution Control Act, which date back to
the early 1990’s, at its facilities located in
Lansford and Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. While
the violations have been corrected, the civil
penalty assessment has just recently been
determined.
Silberline’s Environmental Officer, Jennifer Mikovich has completed the
necessary permitting work to bring the facilities into compliance since being employed by Silberline in 1998. Mikovich says,
“We (Silberline) are committed to the environment and are delighted the DEP has
given us the opportunity to participate in
this program. It is nice to know that a local community in need can benefit from
the penalty money.”

Important Reminders
LAKE DRIVE TEEPEES
Signs have been popping up on the
teepees at the Club entrance on Lake Drive.
The message board located further down
Lake Drive was installed two years ago specifically as a place to post messages and directions so signs would NOT have to be
placed on the teepees. PLEASE: No Signs
On The Teepees. Give your friends directions to start down Lake Drive and then
follow the signs once they reach the message board.
BOAT REGULATIONS
It appears some club members believe the
new boat rules proposed earlier this year
passed and are in effect. They DID NOT
pass. We are still at the 17 foot / 90 HP
limits, so please plan your new boat purchases accordingly.
ATV / SNOWMOBILE LICENSING
This past spring, Pennsylvania passed new
regulations regarding off-road vehicles such
as ATVs and snowmobiles. Among other requirements, all vehicles MUST BE REGISTERED
with the state by October 23, 2001 and
carry license plates. If you have access to
the Internet, you can find out more at:
www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/atv/
BEACH HOURS
Just a reminder that all Lake Hauto beaches
are CLOSED from 11:00 P.M. until 7:00 A.M.
This includes all beach parking lots and restroom facilities. Sorry kids, you’ll have to
take the smooching somewhere else.
