The typical car on the road in the U.S. is a
record-high 11.5 years old, according to a
new IHS Automotive survey. Yet Americans
are buying cars at an annualized rate of
more than 17 million vehicles, marking a high
not seen since before the Great Recession. In
fact, U.S. vehicle owners bought 42 percent
more cars than they scrapped in 2014,
according to IHS. The number of light
vehicles registered in the U.S. hit an all-time
high of 257.9 million units. – USA Today
According to The Detroit Free Press,
automakers will continue having a stellar
year. The paper quotes Kelly Blue Book
Analyst Michelle Krebs. "We are expecting
17.1 million for the full year, with quite
possibly upside potential. We expect 2016
to be another strong year in the same
range." Since July 23 General Motors, Ford
and Fiat Chrysler reported a whopping $6.8
billion in profit from their North American
operations.

Volkswagen overtook Toyota in global
vehicle sales for January-June, the first time
the German automaker has come out top in
the intensely competitive tallies. Japanese
automaker Toyota Motor Corp. said it sold
5.02 million vehicles in the first six months of
2015, down 1.5 percent from the same
period the previous year, as sales struggled
especially in the languishing Japanese
market. Volkswagen AG said that it sold
5.04 million vehicles during the same period.
Sales were robust in Europe and North
America but fell in China, usually a strong
