Same mission, new faces The Story of “Chinle”
The Story of “Chinle”
On a cold Chinle evening, locals and
tourists alike were eating dinner
at the beautiful Canyon de Chelly's
Thunderbird Lodge. In the midst of
their meal, everyone heard a desper-
ate cry for help
from outside.
Locals and
friends of
Blackhat Humane Society,
as well as some
tourists,
finally found
the source of
the whining
and barking -a small puppy
with it's head stuck in a truck's wheel cap! After minutes of maneuvering, the puppy was finally released.
The tourists immediately fell in love with the
little guy, but sadly could not take him because they
were traveling. So, the friends of Blackhat brought
the scared little boy to a foster home in Many Farms.
After a week of socializing the puppy, the foster
received a phone call from the tourists who saved
"Egor" (he had a slight limp due to a past injury) and
told the foster they couldn't stop thinking of that
adorable puppy, and wanted to adopt him immediately! They in fact called multiple foster organizations until they found their little guy, talk about love!
So that weekend, the new family flew from San
Francisco, met
the foster in
Winslow, AZ,
and drove all
the way home to
California with
their new baby!
Now Chinle, the
former Egor, is
a happy, healthy
puppy living
with his loving
mom Sabrina
and new family,
and Blackhat
Humane Society
couldn't be
happier!
Spring 2013
Same mission, new faces
You may have noticed some
changes around here.
Blackhat went through a major
transition last fall when our long-time
secretary, Blackhat founder
Tamara Martin, and treasurer, Donna
Diamond, both resigned from the
board. That resignation was followed by that of our
Vice President, Pati Angel. We thank all three of
them for their many years of service.
Fortunately, foster volunteers Michaela Brady
of Many Farms and
Jacque Patterson
of Durango stepped
up to fill Tamara
and Donna's unexpired terms, joining
President Cindy
Yurth and Historian Jennie Roadt.
The position of Vice
President remains
vacant.
To make
Michaela Brady and Gimli
things easier on our
new treasurer, our bank account and mailing address
have been moved to Durango, Colo. Our new mailing address is P.O. Box 3123, Durango, CO, 81302.
Please make a note
of it.
Although there was some scrambling during
the transition, rest assured we never stopped fostering, vaccinating, spaying/neutering, socializing and
rehoming the dogs and cats of the Navajo Nation - a
total of 305 last year.
We're looking forward to an even more productive year in 2013, with your help! Please consider fostering, donating, helping with spay-neuter clinics or
one of the many administrative tasks that make our
all-volunteer organization run.
Our annual membership meeting, including
election of new officers, is coming up July 13. We
have decided to take it to the northern part of the
reservation this year, either Shiprock or Farmington, so if you are in that area and have been thinking
about getting involved with Blackhat, here's your
chance to meet us and ask some questions! Follow
us on Facebook for updates, including the venue. If
you would like to be nominated for a board position,
please email [email protected].
A big ahéhee’ to all our friends for all their love
and support!
Thank you Soul Dog Rescue for
amazing spay/neuter clinics!
Blackhat is proud to be a part of the
amazing work done by Soul Dog Rescue.
This group sets up shop on the reservation
in schools, churches, and conference centers
almost every month to provide spay/neuter
clinics for everyone in the community. They
work tirelessly eight to ten hours a day
performing surgeries.
Soul Dog is always looking for volunteers to
help at their clinics. Here are the upcoming
clinic dates and you can also like them on
Facebook to get updated information.

Blackhat Humane Society is a non-profit
organization established in 2000.
We are dedicated to rescuing and
finding homes for abandoned animals
and livestock. We are one of the very few
Humane Societies on the Navajo Reservation
(an area roughly the size of West Virginia).
YOU can help!
Blackhat Humane would be lost without our
wonderful volunteer foster homes! Our rescued
animals all live in foster homes and are part of the
family who cares for them. We can tell you if they
are housebroken, if they like children, whether
they ignore or chase cats, or livestock. We know
how they behave while riding in cars, and at
feeding time. All of our rescued animals go to
their adoptive homes up-to-date on
vaccinations and all are spayed or neutered
(if old enough). We support our foster
homes with supplies and veterinary care.
We advertise for prospective adopters and
are always available to guide the foster
parents through the adoption process.
Won’t you join us in fostering an animal?
