Sunny Weather Brings Out Visitors
“Float a Boat for
Garrett” was the
theme for the 15th
annual Charlotte
Antique and Classic
Boat Show on Lake
Norman, September
6-9, 2012.

youthful boaters.
All proceeds from
advertisements,
the silent auction
and donations by
participants and visitors will be given to
Marine Captain Garrett Carnes, who
recently returned home to Mooresville, NC.
Garrett is recovering from an explosion in
Afghanistan which took part of both his legs.
His parents and brother attended the show on
Saturday and were given a boat ride by Bob
Churchill and treated to lunch.
The show began on Thursday evening with
an “Early Arrivals BBQ” hosted by Pat and
Shari Crusse. Friday morning began clear and
windy. At noon, members attended the Blue
Ridge Chapter’s annual meeting.
Friday evening the group was treated
to a reception at the home of Judy and
Ed Longino. Ed was proud to show off
his boathouse, filled with wooden boat
and NASCAR memorabilia. The food and
fellowship were outstanding! Many thanks to
Ed and Judy for their hospitality.
Saturday morning was sunny but so windy
that the Parade of Boats had to be cancelled,
to everyone’s disappointment, During the
afternoon, a 1947 Seaplane did a flyover,
landing nearby and pulling up to the marina,
adding to the enjoyment of our many visitors.
Saturday was capped off with a delicious
meal in the banquet room of Queen’s
Landing.
Our hats off

This annual event was held at Crooked Creek
Marina on beautiful Lake Sinclair. Crooked

are in the second year
as our hosts, and not
only did they provide
the venue but provided
the hamburgers and
hot dogs. The weather
was terrific, and we

the event,
brought their Centuries, and they were all
kept running. Einstein, the trick-card-reading
rabbit, as well as the talents of artist Joel
Samuelson, whose thumbprint art project
was a huge hit with the kids, graced
us this year. The turnout was a little
lighter than in years past; however this
was attributed to a simultaneous event
conflict with the organizations. All in
all it was still a terrific day and the boat
captains were kept hoppin’.
The children and their families

wanted, and I continue to be amazed
at the resiliency and zest for life that so
many of them have. It is a pure joy to
see the same families year after year, to
watch the progression of the children, as
many are able to conquer their illnesses.
That’s not to say we haven’t experienced
some losses, but I believe we are all the
better for having these special families
in our lives, albeit a tragically short
time for some. The simple pleasure in
watching a child’s face light up with
a smile, and in accepting thanks from

grateful families for sharing our hobby
with them, is indescribable. It’s often asked who benefits more, the
families or us boaters, and I believe it is mutual. We certainly benefit
from spending time with these everyday, ordinary heroes.
A continued THANKS to Blue Ridge Chapter for their continued
sponsorship. The Boating Bonanza is an important event that is
looked forward to every year by the families, and just knowing that,
at least for a day, we are able to make a difference is important to all
of us. Check us out on the Boating Bonanza Facebook page!
Here’s looking forward to the 2013 Boating Bonanza. Hope you
can join us! c

This year the Blue Ridge Chapter Annual Meeting
venue was changed to be held during the Charlotte
Show. With 47 members in attendance, the
meeting started with a call to order and attendees
introducing themselves. Officer and Committee
reports were made. Jerri Nowlen, Treasurer, stated
the budget for 2013 was $6,900. Tom Riggle,
Membership, reported current membership at 261.
Julie Moore informed members that with assistance
from ACBS, no additional expense was incurred

for the website, since there are no space limitations.
John Heiderich, Ships Store, reported the older, small-size inventory
would be donated to the children attending the Boating Bonanza. The
issue of alcohol insurance for boat show events was a primary discussion.
It was decided that each boat show organizer should independently
contact ACBS headquarters regarding their event to determine if an alcohol
insurance rider at $100 each is required. If one is deemed necessary by
ACBS, the chapter will incur the cost. Boat Show Chairpersons announced
the 2013 Boat Show schedule
which is shown in the “On the
Horizon” column. At the meeting’s
close, President Julie Moore
announced, “It is my privilege
to award the President’s Cup to
Al and Bonne Olsen for their
dedication, mentoring, ideas, all
the extra efforts and hard work in
implementing the newsletter, as
well as attending so many extra
boating events.” c
