Fly Barbour Island
Georgia’s Exclusive Hideaway
By Sallie Caddell
Barbour Island is Georgia’s best kept
secret. Located less than one hour’s drive
from Savannah and Brunswick and a
mere 10 miles east of I-95, this secluded
island is comfortably nestled inside a
string of barrier islands and boasts nearby
beautiful white beaches, an assortment of
recreational activities like fishing and bird
watching, a neighboring wildlife refuge,
and a peacefulness that is second to none.
Accessible by boat or plane, Barbour Island
remains virtually untouched, offering an
ideal location for a vacation home.
“I’ve flown to Greenland, Iceland,
England and all over the U.S., and have
seen many beautiful places,” explains
Don Brooks, private pilot and one of the
partners of BNP, Inc., the only developer
building on Barbour Island at present.
“When I saw this small island, I saw an
opportunity to give people a place that
allows them to leave the stresses of their
daily lives without having to travel very
far. It’s the ultimate getaway because
homeowners can get into their plane, fly
a short distance and enter a completely
different world that is closer to nature.”
BNP, also run by Bill Parker and Billy
Nelson, the company’s full-time contractor,
is currently building and selling high-quality
affordable homes on an extremely limited
number of lots—12 to be exact. Two homes
have been built thus far and a third will be
finished in early spring 2008. Prices start
at the mid-500s and offer a wide range of
amenities for every taste and budget.
The homes will boast spectacular views
that include the marsh, majestic oaks and
palms, views of Blackbeard, St. Catherine’s
and Sapelo Islands or the Intra-coastal
Waterway to the east. These one- or twostory homes of approximately 1,850 square
feet to 2,500 square feet will feature three
bedrooms and three and a half baths,
central heat and air, a great room, laundry/
pantry, a large kitchen and breakfast room,
and wrap around porches or porches on

both ends of the house. Energy conscious,
BNP has insulated the floors as well as the
walls and ceilings. Homeowners will have
access to underground utilities, public water
system, high speed Internet, cable TV,
phone and community center with pool.
All BNP homes will be
conveniently located near
the island’s airport and will
have use of two community
docks. Pilot homeowners
can fly into the private
2,600 by 150-foot grass
strip (72GA) where they
will find clear approaches
and ample ramp space. Or,
boating homeowners can
drive to the Barbour River
Yacht Club and take their
own boat for a five-minute
leisurely ride to the island.
Either way, homeowners have fast and easy
access to their home away from home!
“For the most part, island and coastal
property in Georgia has already been
discovered,” says Brooks, “but Barbour
Island is the exception to that rule. This
island is really special, and a place where
people can get back to nature.” A nature
lover’s paradise, homeowners will enjoy
the solitude of island living by fishing,
birdwatching, boating, sunbathing, and

simply relaxing with friends and family.
And with a no automobile policy—only
golf carts are used for transportation!—and
no hunting and firearms discharge, rest
assured that the peacefulness of the island
will never be interrupted.
Building a vacation home on Barbour
Island is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,
and space is extremely limited. For more
