10 GREAT REASONS TO
CELEBRATE YOUR LOVE IN HAWAI‘I
Hawai‘i presents all the essential ingredients for a truly memorable escape with your loved one —
from some of the world’s most romantic resorts and breathtaking beaches, to heavenly health spas,
remote retreats, unforgettable encounters with nature, world-class nightlife and international dining.
1
SPOILT FOR CHOICE
Hawai‘i is all about making your dreams
come true. If you’re planning a wedding
or vow-renewal ceremony, Hawai‘i offers
a multitude of choices — from sumptuous
formal venues to simple beachfront settings.
Select from some of the world’s most
exclusive resorts, stunning gardens, private
estates, breathtaking stretches of beach,
dramatic mountainscapes and mystical
waterfall locations.
2
4 MEMORABLE &
MEANINGFUL
It’s easy to add significance to your special
celebration by weaving in a few meaningful
Hawaiian traditions such as the exchange of
flower lei — a simple but beautiful gesture that
signifies deep love and affection.
5 HONEYMOON HEAVEN
Discover a huge range of unforgettable
post-wedding escapes — from charmingly
unpretentious beach-side retreats to luxurious
resorts and sumptuous health spas. You’ll
also find that the intense competition for your
business drives excellence in service, range
of amenities and value-for-money.
6 EVERYONE’S HAPPY
Hawai‘i makes it easy to take care of your
guests — with a monumental number of
pre- and post-celebration activities to suit
all ages, interests and budgets. Whether it’s
shopping and family activities, relaxation and
rejuvenation, or high adventure and water
sports, Hawai‘i has your guests covered.
NO WORRIES
When it comes to the legal requirements
for weddings and vow renewals in Hawai‘i,
the paperwork is simple, straightforward
and inexpensive.

9 ADVENTURE AT ITS BEST
As a melting pot of many cultures, Hawai‘i’s
culinary landscape is vast and adventurous!
Discover mouthwatering Chinese, Filipino,
Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Polynesian
and American cuisine, in addition to delicious
Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine with its focus on
fresh, local ingredients and ethnic infusions.
Eateries range from simple beach cafes, to
five-star award-winning restaurants.
Feel the adrenalin-rush as you soar over one
of the world’s most active volcanoes in a
helicopter or walk the rim of a magnificent
crater. Fly at almost 60 km an hour above the
tree canopies via zipline (flying fox), escape
on an all-terrain-vehicle off-road adventure or
take on the extensive network of world-class
trails. Hawai‘i has it all!
10
NATURE’S WONDERLAND
Hawai‘i excels when it comes to remarkable
close encounters with wildlife. From
outstanding night dives with gentle manta
rays to snorkelling with dolphins and
extraordinary humpback whale-watching
expeditions, you will be captivated and
enthralled. Even swimming at a local beach
is likely to involve sharing the waters with a
friendly sea turtle.
7 PARTY TIME
World-class bars, top clubs featuring
international acts and hot dance parties with
guest DJs are all part of the after-dark action.
Or, if you’re after something lower key, many
of the quaint towns open late to showcase
galleries, museums, specialty stores and
entertainment.

BEACH
A multitude of idyllic, uncrowded beach
parks fringe the shores of the Hawaiian
Islands offering magnificent views and
breathtaking sunsets.
CHURCH
Hawaiian Island churches range from
charmingly quaint to magnificently majestic,
gracefully traditional and stylishly
contemporary.

Hawai‘i excels when it comes to extraordinary
natural settings — from opulent rainforests
to panoramic peaks and magical waterfalls.
POOLSIDE
Many glamorous hotels and resorts offer
elegant poolside venues incorporating
terraces and beautifully-manicured garden
settings.
PRIVATE HOMES
If it is intimacy and sophistication you’re after,
look no further than one of Hawai‘i’s superb
private homes or outstanding estates — from

garden or beautiful park surrounded by
manicured lawns, tropical foliage and a

LANGUAGE OF LOVE
After the ceremony, you may consider a
traditional sunset banquet called a lū‘au.
The main course is usually succulent roast
pork cooked slowly in an imu pit and
accompanied by fresh fruit, local seafood,
salad and specialty dishes. Most lū‘aus also
offer luscious tropical cocktails.
Popular wedding party and guest gifts include:
koa-wood frames, delicious Kona coffee,
Aloha wear, Luahala (hats, wallets and purses
woven from leaves of the hala tree), island
jewellery, Hawaiian quilting (purses and pillow
cases) and gift certificates for traditional
Hawaiian lomilomi massage.
Consider incorporating Hawaiian language
into your ceremony or reception. For example:
I give my love to you — Aloha Aku No
May our love last forever — E Hoomau
Maua Kealoha
Thank you for celebrating with us — Mahalo
nui loa na ho‘olaule‘a me la kaua.

MUSIC
TOP 8 SPIRIT OF ALOHA TOUCHES
ENHANCE YOUR SPECIAL DAY — VISUALLY AND SPIRITUALLY —
BY INCORPORATING DISTINCTIVE ELEMENTS OF THE HAWAIIAN
CULTURE INTO YOUR CEREMONY AND RECEPTION.
Music is an integral part of any Hawaiian
celebration, and island-influenced jazz,
traditional ‘ukelele, dance bands, slack-key
guitar and traditional Hawaiian song add a
joyous and distinctively Hawaiian element to
your festive occasion. ‘The Hawaiian Wedding
Song’, Ke Kali Nei Au, is a popular choice.
Originally written in 1926, the song has been
covered by several artists, most notably Elvis
Presley in the movie ‘Blue Hawaii’.
HULA
As a dance form revered for hundreds of years
and renowned as a vehicle for conveying
passionate love stories, hula adds an
authentically beautiful Hawaiian touch to any
reception party.

DRESS
In traditional Hawaiian weddings, both the bride and groom wear
white. The groom is also allowed a touch of colour around the waist
in the form of a coloured sash. Guests may be invited to dress
casually in Aloha-wear such as Hawaiian-print shirts for men and
bright floral dresses for women.

the ceremony as both hold great significance. The koa bowl —

Fragrant garlands are an important part of Hawaiian wedding ritual.
The green-leaved maile is the most traditional wedding lei, as it was
used by the Hawaiian priests in Old Hawai‘i to bind the hands of the
bride and groom, symbolising their commitment to each other.
Brides generally wear a lei of strongly-scented pikake (white English
jasmine), while grooms wear an open-ended lei made of spicyscented green maile stems and leaves. A significant symbol of love,
the lei is given as part of the ceremony to each member of the bridal
party and key family members.

A WELCOME FROM THE HEART
HAWAI‘I WARMLY EMBRACES SAME-SEX COUPLES FROM ACROSS
THE GLOBE WHO WISH TO CELEBRATE THEIR UNION WITH LOVING
FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
The historic Hawai‘i Marriage Equality Act — passed on 2 December 2013 — legally recognises
marriage between individuals of the same sex.
‘The Hawaiian people’s extraordinary warmth, genuine acceptance,
deep reverence for the natural environment and cherished traditions
all combined to add a magical and spiritual dimension to your ceremony.’
Chuck Spence, Maui Sunseeker LGBT Resort
Same-sex couples wishing to get married
in Hawai‘i may be required to organise
some simple paperwork before departure.
A wedding service provider or marriage
celebrant in Hawai‘i will be able to discuss
this with you via phone or email.
Please refer to the ‘Start Planning’ advice
on page 8 of the Romance Hawai‘i guide for
more details.
Same-sex marriages conducted overseas
are recognised in New Zealand. While they
are not currently recognised in Australia, they
may be evidence of a de facto relationship for
the purposes of Commonwealth, State and
Territory laws. For more information visit

CRUISE HAWAI‘I
THE EASIEST WAY TO ‘MULTI-ISLAND’
A cruise holiday is a totally relaxing and indulgent option for couples who prefer the convenience of
sailing between the Hawaiian Islands on a floating resort while taking in a spectacular showcase of
scenic highlights.
Relax poolside, or keep busy with action-packed days of shore excursions, gym workouts, swimming
and deck sports. In the evening, enjoy an intimate dinner for two on your private balcony, dine in one
of many superb restaurants or take in a fabulous show. The choice is yours!
WHY CRUISING IS SO EASY
In addition to the inherent romance of sailing
the seas, cruising offers a number of practical
benefits including:
• no unpacking and re-packing as you tour the Hawaiian Islands
• gourmet dining built into the ‘all-inclusive’ price
• great vantage points for whale-watching
(December-April) and viewing the more
inaccessible scenic highlights such as the
dramatic Nāpali Coast of Kaua‘i.
One cruise ship, Norwegian Cruise Line’s
Pride of America, is located in Hawai‘i yearround. Other cruise vessels visit for part of
the year. Specialty, short duration cruises
also operate offering a particular focus such
as golfing, whale-watching and dinner cruising.

•kayaking
• mountain tubing (riding a large inflated
ring down century-old irrigation channels)
— a fun way to explore the rainforest
•parasailing
• rainforest ziplining (via flying-fox)
•snorkelling
• surfing lessons
• tours of Kaua‘i’s most romantic, exciting
and adventurous movie locations
• Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of
the Pacific

Direct services to Hawai‘i depart from Sydney
(Hawaiian Airlines, Jetstar and Qantas),
Brisbane (Hawaiian Airlines and Jetstar)
and Melbourne (Jetstar). These services
arrive into Honolulu International Airport on
the island of O‘ahu. Travellers from other
Australian states should arrange domestic
flights to connect in Sydney, Brisbane or
Melbourne. Each international carrier has a
domestic airline partnership which will allow
luggage to be checked through from the
domestic point of embarkation to Honolulu.
Please ask your international carrier for
more information.
It’s easy to travel between the Hawaiian
Islands. Flights depart regularly and are short
in duration. Hawaiian Airlines offers more
than 160 inter-island flights per week. Other
inter-island carriers include Island Air,
Makani Kai Air and Mokulele Airlines.

PLANNING YOUR HAWAIIAN HOLIDAY
Shoulder seasons: March-May and September-November generally
offer greater availability of accommodation across Hawai‘i and the most
competitive prices for hotels and flights.
Peak seasons: June-August (Hawaiian summer and long summer break
for schools/universities in mainland USA); mid-December to mid-January
(encompassing Christmas and New Year); April and October (Australian
and New Zealand school holidays). Accommodation may be more difficult
to secure in peak seasons so book early.

LOCAL TRANSPORT
HIRE CARS
BASIC COSTS
HAWAI‘I STATE TAX
Australian travellers do not require an
international driver’s licence as major car hire
companies accept an Australian licence. In
some cases drivers will need to be more than
25 years of age and in possession of a major
credit card. It’s best to pre-arrange car hire prior
to leaving Australia to avoid disappointment.

•
Coffee – $US3; Beer – $US5; Club Sandwich
– $US8; Glass of Wine – $US7; Soft Drink –

charged a General Excise Tax (added on at
the time of purchase) of 4–4.712%.
US standards on tipping apply:
Bar – US$0.50-$1 per drink
Concierge – US$1 for calling a taxi
Free shuttle – US$1 per short trip per person
Housekeeping – US$1 per bed per night
(leave it on the bedside table each morning)

Taxi – 15% of fare
Tour guides – US$5-$10 per half day per

Hawai‘i’s ocean is beautiful, but it can also
be dangerous. Strong, hidden currents can
overpower even experienced swimmers and
standing on rocky outcrops can be dangerous
due to sudden, powerful rogue waves.
Conditions in the water constantly change.
Remember:
• waves come in sets and conditions can
be calm for up to 20 mins between
dangerous sets of waves
• swim only where lifeguards are on duty
• do not fight a rip current (keep calm, float and wave for help, and go with the current to conserve energy)
• use the buddy system – never swim alone and know your limits
• when in doubt, don’t go out
• nude bathing and nude sun-bathing is
prohibited across Hawai‘i.
Apply sunscreen often (year-round).
Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
Rental cars offer real value as they provide
the freedom and flexibility to truly experience
what each island has to offer. Remember
to drive on the right-hand side of the road.
You’ll find that most major roads are well
maintained.
Hawai‘i does not have a sales tax. Instead
a General Excise Tax applies which varies
by county (island): Kaua‘i – 4.166%; O‘ahu
– 4.712%; Moloka‘i – 4.166%; Lāna‘i –
4.166%; Maui – 4.166%; and Hawai‘i Island
– 4.166%. Please note that this tax is not
included in the advertised price of goods
(it is added on at the time of purchase).
On O‘ahu use ‘TheBus’ (thebus.org) and
Waikiki Trolley (waikikitrolley.com) — they’re easy, fun and affordable ways to see Waikīkī and Honolulu.
• With little to no public transport on
neighbouring islands, a hire car (or
combination of hire car and tours) is recommended.
• A ferry operates daily to/from Lāhainā (Maui) to Moloka‘i (90 minute trip) and Lāna‘i (60 minute trip).
•
Taxis are available at airports and key
tourist spots. Credit cards are not
commonly accepted and long taxi rides are costly. Taxis charge approximately US$45 for the 30-minute journey from Honolulu International Airport to Waikīkī.
•
In key tourist spots, shuttles operate between airports and hotels/resorts, and between resorts and nearby shopping precincts. Some are free of charge and others incur a small fee (check with your hotel/resort for details).
•
Helicopter tours are a great way to see the particularly scenic spots such as Waimea Canyon (Kaua‘i) and
inaccessible areas such as the Nāpali Coast (Kaua‘i).
• Passenger submarines are a novel,
comfortable and safe way to explore the wonders of Hawai‘i’s tropical waters.
• Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles are available for hire.
Please ‘drive with aloha’ (slowly and without
the horn as it’s considered rude) and observe
speed limits. Avoid tailgating and the local
rule for single-lane bridges is to yield to
on-coming traffic. However, if you’re the
on-coming traffic and there is a line waiting
on the other side, stop and let your
neighbours cross.
ETIQUETTE TIPS
Respect property marked with kapu (‘off
limits’). Remember to mālama kai (respect
plants and animals). Make sure to mālama
‘aīna (respect the land) by staying on trails
and not disturbing plants. Remove shoes
when entering private homes and selected
B&Bs. Properly dispose of opala (rubbish).
Observe smoke-free laws which prohibit
smoking in enclosed public areas.
TIPPING GUIDELINES
Restaurants – 15-20%
Note that a service charge may be
automatically added to a bill, especially for
party sizes of six or more. Check your bill,
before tipping, to see if a service charge
had already been included.
Cruising –
A small gratuity is generally built into the
cost of your cruise (this is generally split
between various service departments
onboard such as housekeeping and food/
beverage). At your discretion, you may still
like to leave a tip for extra special service
received from housekeepers, waiters, bar
staff and others.
WEATHER
The temperature fluctuates very little. Summer (May-Oct) has an average
daytime temperature at sea level of 29.4ºC while the equivalent in winter
(Nov-Apr) is 25.6ºC. Temperatures at night are approximately 12ºC lower.
November to March are the wettest months but the rain tends to be
localised with sunny spots usually found somewhere else on each island.
Long periods of rain are uncommon. During summer showers are less
frequent, often lasting only a few minutes.

HOTEL ROOM TAX
On accommodation (such as hotels, resorts,
B&Bs and apartments), visitors are required
to pay a Transient Accommodations Tax of
9.25% in addition to the General Excise Tax.
This means that accommodation will attract
a tax of between 13.416–13.962% (General
Excise Tax + Transient Accommodation Tax).
LEGAL DRINKING AGE
SNORKELLING SAFETY
Check ocean conditions prior to snorkelling
in order to avoid high surf and strong currents.
GENERAL SAFETY TIPS
Be as security-conscious as you would be
at home. Don’t leave valuables unattended
or in plain sight in a hire car, on the beach,
or in restaurants or lobbies (lock them in the
hotel/room safe). Take only essential items
to the beach and put keys/valuables in a
waterproof bag and keep them with you.
Carry little cash and leave extra cash/credit
cards in the hotel safe. Make use of
travellers’ cheques, ATM facilities and/or
credit cards.
21 years of age. Please note that ID is
required to enter bars or buy alcoholic drinks.

HIKING SAFETY
Hawai‘i is the perfect destination for hiking but
some trails are for experienced hikers only.
Make sure you do your research (degree of
difficulty and length), let people know where
you’re going, carry a mobile phone and water,
and hike with a partner. Visit hawaii.gov/dlnr/

PROTECING HAWAI‘I’S
NATURE RESERVES
1. Brush/clean your boots before entering nature preserves to remove seeds and
eggs of invasive pests.
2. Never stray off a trail. Staying on paths helps to protect native plants. It’s also safer
because many trails have hidden cliffs.
3. Take your own water. Water from streams may look clear but may contain bacteria.
