Lake Placid Center For The Arts Begins 2015 With Local
Artist Burdette Parks And His Exhibit Eye Of The Beholder
Lake Placid, NY: The Lake Placid Center for the Arts
(LPCA) begins 2015 with the gallery exhibit Burdette
Parks: Eye of the Beholder. The exhibit will run from
January 2 until January 25. The LPCA gallery hours are
Wednesday through Saturday from 1 PM until 5 PM.
There is no charge to view the exhibit. There is be an
opening meet-the-artist reception on Friday, January 2
from 5 PM until 7 PM. The public is invited to attend.
About the Artist
Burdette Parks was born and educated in North
Dakota receiving a BA in Theater Arts from the University of North Dakota. He developed an early interest in
photography through his father, an inveterate and prolific family picture taker. That interest was cemented in
1964 when the North Dakota State Travel Department
purchased two of his nature slides. At the University of
North Dakota, Burdette did yearbook photography for
the Journalism Department, learned processing and
darkroom basics doing work-study at the University
News Bureau and was mentored in photography by a
commercial photographer and an award-winning photojournalist while pursuing first a pre-med degree and
ultimately a degree in Theatre Arts. A brief “invitational”
stint with the U.S. Army deposited him in Texas where
he managed and owned live theaters for over fourteen
From Here To Eternity The Musical
Plays The Lpca Big Screen Before
Heading To Broadway
Lake Placid, NY: The Lake Placid Center for the
Arts (LPCA) will present a screening of Tim Rice’s new
musical adaptation of From Here to Eternity before the
production heads to Broadway next year. The screening will take place on Saturday, January 10 at 1 PM.
Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for LPCA Members and
$10 for students. Tickets are available by calling the

About From Here to Eternity
Pearl Harbor, 1941, where the girls sing “don’cha
like Hawaii”, the men of G Company sing the blues,
and where even on an army base, love and desire are
never very far away. When the troubled Private Prewitt (Robert Lonsdale) falls for the kind hearted escort Lorene (Siubhan Harrison), and when his platoon
sergeant, Warden (Darius Campbell), embarks on a
dangerous affair with his commanding officer’s wife,
Karen (Rebecca Thornhill), the lives of both men are
set on a course they cannot control. As war approaches, the worlds of the four lovers and the soldiers of G
Company are dramatically ripped apart.
Sir Tim Rice’s epic new musical, From Here To
Eternity, is adapted from one of the greatest novels
of the twentieth century; a gripping tale of illicit love
and army life which translates in to a breath-taking,
romantic and excitingly original show, set to join the
front rank of great musicals.
This year marks 60 years since the film version
swept the board at the Academy Awards winning 8
Oscars. The large scale production features a cast of
33 accompanied by a 15-piece orchestra. The release
will include an exclusive behind the scenes tour of
London’s Shaftsbury Theatre and an interview with Sir
Tim Rice.

the Arts is dedicated to presenting and fostering quality arts which inspire, enrich, educate and entertain

years in San Antonio and Austin. During more than two
decades producing, directing and performing live theater, Burdette incorporated photography. He did extensive publicity and production photography for his own
and other theaters. His first formal gallery show was at
a San Antonio gallery in 1980 and for thirty years a steel
sculpture of his has graced the Sculpture Garden at the
San Antonio Museum of Art.
Since 1990, he has been living in the Adirondacks
with his wife whom he met through the amorous influence of Saranac Lake’s Pendragon Theater and has
enthusiastically rekindled a decades long devotion to
photography.
The transition from film to digital photography happened for Burdette in 2001. He has been working to keep
pace with this rapidly advancing technology ever since.
Specializing in fine art and landscape/nature work, he
has had work showcased in multiple juried shows in the
Adirondack region and has been featured in numerous
exhibits. Photographs of his were awarded Best of Show
in ACNA’s 2009 Cover Art competition, an Honorable
Mention in their 2011 show and First Place in LPCA’s
2013 Black and White competition.
As an early convert to digital photography, Burdette
has accumulated a vast store of information on this ever
evolving technology he and shares his discoveries and
enthusiasm through classes and workshops. He has
been teaching digital photography workshops at Great
Camp Sagamore each spring and fall since 2006. He
also tutors and offers occasional digital and Photoshop
workshops locally. He serves on the Executive Committee of Saranac Lake ArtWorks and is an exhibiting member of the Adirondack Artists’ Guild in Saranac Lake,
NY. His work can be seen at the Guild’s gallery and in
other North Country galleries as well as on his web site
at www.roundlakestudios.com. While people and theatre
remain strong photographic interests, Burdette finds the
natural studio of the Adirondacks a beguiling place to
explore expanding photographic horizons.

Conversations, Vol. 1
by A Fine Line
Jazz Standards in the tradition of the Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett trios
A Fine Line is the jazz duo of Bill Vitek and
Dan Gagliardi. From the Thousand Islands to the
Adirondack Park, and lots of small towns in between, they’ve been playing music together for a
decade in New York’s “North Country.” They released their first CD, “A Fine Line” in 2005. While
continuing to work as a duo, Dan and Bill have
played with many fine musicians along the way,
most recently with drummer Mike Magilligan, a
newcomer to the North Country. Mike’s musical
approach and inventive rhythms are a perfect
complement to the duo’s style of intermixing
ensemble playing and solos, with lots of open
space. When the topic of the next CD came up,
it was clear that Mike would be part of it, and we
could call it “Conversations,” the first, they hope,
of many Fine Line conversations with musicians
who share their respect for, and approach to, the
music.
All three musicians on this recording have careers that keep them busy during the day. Mike
is a librarian at the Canton campus of the State
University of New York (SUNY). Dan is a mathematics professor, also at SUNY Canton. Bill is
a philosophy professor at Clarkson University in
Potsdam, New York. But each has had a profes-
sional musical life.
Dan studied classical and jazz bass at Manhattan School of Music’s Preparatory Division
,and at the Eastman School of Music with James
B. Vandermark. After Eastman, he studied with
classical bassist Homer Mensch and jazz with
Mike Richmond. He has played with Tom Harrell,
Bruce Barth, and Steve Hobbs, to name a few.
Bill studied piano with Ray Bozenski and Frank
Stagnitta. In the 80’s he worked with a number of
jazz groups in New York’s Capital District region,
and arranged and produced three award-winning
jazz nursery rhyme recordings with Josh Greenberg: Rhythm and Rhyme, Go With the Flow and
See How They Run.
Mike is originally from Long Island. He
spent many years cutting his teeth in the NYC
jazz scene. His melodic and rhythmic approach
to music has been greatly influenced by Pandit
Samir Chatterjee, with whom he has been studying tabla in the traditional Hindustani musical tradition for the last fifteen years. His playing with A
Fine Line represents an improvised approach to
listening and reacting that encapsulates his creative attitude towards music and life.

TAUNY JAMS, hosted by Gretchen Koehler and
Barb Heller, return to The TAUNY Center in 2015.
Beginning January 9th, and continuing on the first
Friday of each month through May, TAUNY’s traditional music jams are open to anyone in the community interested in playing old time fiddle tunes.
All levels of musicians, singers and step dancers are welcome. Jams are held from 7:00pm to
8:30pm at The TAUNY Center, 53 Main St., down-
town Canton.
Gretchen Koehler is a renowned fiddle player
and teacher who relishes sharing traditional music with her North Country neighbors. Barb Heller,

Car-Freshner / Toyota Summer Concert Series Presented By Dpao
The CAR-FRESHNER / TOYOTA 2014 Summer Concert Series presented by DPAO had one
of its best seasons ever. Over 12,000 people
from multiple counties (Jefferson, Lewis, St.
Lawrence, Oswego, etc.,) and as far away as
Rochester/Buffalo as well as other states attended the three summer concerts. Jeff Dunham and HEART were both sold out shows held
indoors at the Watertown Fairgrounds Arena.
Country Star Brantley Gilbert performed outdoors at the Watertown Fairgrounds before an
estimated crowd of over 6,000 people!
The DPAO Foundation, started this past
January, was established to engage in fundraising activities for the benefit of Disabled Persons
Action Organization. The Foundation will use its
assets to aid children and adults with developmental disabilities, and their families, to live as
productive and accepted members of the community.
The success of the DPAO Concert Series
played a vast role in allowing our agency to continue to serve our consumers with developmental disabilities. A sincere “Thank You” goes out

volunteers, media and staff who supported us!

On With Life
Kev Rowe is best known as the innovative and
dynamic lead guitar player for the Big Leg Emma,
a bluegrass/jam rock band based in western New
York State. Kev’s got another side to him. He’s
also a singer/ songwriter in the folk vein, and his
solo career has already produced four critically
acclaimed CDs; More True Than Real, Hi Love,
Into The Gold, and Brown Book. Number 5 just
came out of the oven, and it’s a tasty one, for
sure. On With Life is Kev’s latest offering, and
quite possibly his best so far. Produced and
mixed by Danny Kadar, Rowe gets little help from
other musicians. Mostly it’s just the poet, his
sweet voice, and his guitar.
The only cut that sounds remotely like a Big
Leg Emma is the opening track. Skating Down
Lakeview Avenue begins like it’s just a sound
check starting up, and breaks into a happy, bubbly song. Rowe’s work on electric guitar combines the melodic best of Dickey Betts and Jerry
Garcia. His sound is clean and innovative. If I
have any disappointment with this album, it
would be that we don’t get more of his lead guitar
work. But I surmise that Kev deliberately wants
us to focus on his lyrics, so he mostly maintains
an understated strumming and picking. There’s
lots of introspection on this CD. Everything You
Can’t See is heavy in that department. Rowe’s
voice and phrasing bear Paul Simon’s imprint, at
least to my ear. Pain Is Not Love is a gentle warning from one recently broken heart to another.
The crown jewel of the recording is the fourth
song; Somewhere In The Middle. It’s a bitter
sweet look back on a lost love. “ She loved me
and now she doesn’t” is the opening line. If Emmylou Harris ever discovers this song, I have no
doubt that she’d record it, as a duet. It concludes
with the words “Each day I live, and die just a
little. The truth is somewhere in the middle.”
Song number 5 is The Last Thing I’d Change
is You. It falls right into Townes VanZant’s style
of writing. Moon Fire , a delightful acoustic instrumental comes next. Kev Rowe comes across
at times like dancing Buddhist monk with his
shaved head and beard, sly smile, and philosophical statements, and coupled with some catchy
rhythms and snappy melody, that’s who he is in
Black Friday At Walmart.
It’s a Saturday night picking session that’s the
subject of The Blue Heron Song, and the music
is a metaphor for everything else in life. Rowe
sings “we’ve got to settle in a groove to find our
way. He then drops back into the introspection
mode on Have You Seen Myself.
Method To The Madness is another one of
my favorites on this CD. Having listened to it
quite a few times, I’m not sure I’m getting everything Kev Rowe is saying in this song, although
the general theme is quite clear. The tune has a
comforting vibe to it, and as Rowe looks around a
disjointed, oft times contradictory world, he sees
beneath the surface a method to the madness.
The lyrics bring to mind Bob Dylan’s Every Grain
of Sand.
One With Life closes out with the tongue in
cheekish All My Friends Are Crazy. I’ve heard it
said that the mark of a good song is that it can be
pulled off well by various gendres. Frank Sinatra
would have loved to have had the chance to sing
this one. The more I listen to this song, the more
I appreciate Rowe’s style of writing and command of his own voice.
With this collection of 11 songs, I won’t say
that Kev Rowe has hit a booming shot way over
the fence, but winning baseball is a collection of
singles, doubles, and triples, and the occasional
inside the park home run. It’s a fine piece of
work, and only serves to strengthen the artist’s

Jess Novak
Jess Novak is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who performs solo as well as in
duos, trios and several full bands (Jess and The Beards, Master Thieves and The Shining Star Band). Bad Habit, her debut solo album released Dec. 2013, is a collection of
songs cultivated over a year and put down organically as they emerged. What began as a
four-song EP sprung into a full-length 11-song album as ideas flowed during sessions at
Moletrax East in Syracuse with accomplished sound engineer, Jeff Moleski. Fellow Master
Thieves, Brian Golden and Eric Tozer, also appear on the album providing guitar and percussion. Recorded between July and October 2013, the album captures a moment in time,
focusing on relationships, both good and bad, telling the stories with honesty.

Until recently, my exposure to folksinger/
song-finder Mike Agranoff’s work was limited
to hearing him throw in a few songs at the Minstrel Show in Morristown, NJ -- a venture that
he shepherds. So, I was not prepared for the
depth and beauty of his recent release, Straight
Lines. It’s a potpourri of ballads, spoken word,
sing-along and a capella numbers, and even a
classical instrumental, all delivered in a way that
I imagine Pete Seeger would be very proud of.
He’s sometimes joined by friends, but often just
the singer and his guitar are enough to solidly deliver a song. Agranoff has a deceivingly powerful
and clear voice, and his finger picking is skillful.
It’s delightful and contains subtle surprises. He
has not only recorded, but flawlessly mixed and
produced an album that deserves a place in any
folk music lover’s collection.
Agranoff strides right out smartly with David Gordon’s “New York Central Yard,” a train
song that Woody Guthrie would have loved to
have written -- the hopeful lament of an overworked yard hand. The guitar work between lines
and verses is stellar. “Sing That Stephen Foster
Song” is a nostalgic call back to times when family gatherings gave occasion to group singing. I
can’t listen to it without picturing my own relatives gathered around Grandma’s piano, in fourpart harmony. Ken and Pat Rolston join Mike on
vocals, and Diane Perry’s violin adds a welcomed
touch.
Cut number three is an interesting take on
an old song, “Makin’ Woopee,” delivered in
dropped-D tuning, followed by Joni Mitchell’s
gorgeous “Urge For Going.”
The title piece, a poem by Pete Southerland
that’s also called “Straight Lines,” is presented in
distinct, orderly New England fashion, followed
by a trio of Irish Jigs that’s featuring Agranoff on
English concertina. I get a little choked up listening to “Deeper Waters,” but the tears are quickly
turned in to an illegal smile -- barbershop quartet
style -- with “Iowa Pot.” Prepare to be bowled
over, is all I can tell you.
We’re led into classical music territory
with J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.3,
First Movement. Liz Cabrera’s cello and Marco
Brehm’s upright bass join with two concertina
parts played by Agranoff. It’s an interesting arrangement that gives insight into the artist’s
wide-ranging talents. “The Kid with the Comic
Book” touches on politics, science, humor, religion, and more. Amen.
An excellent rendition of Steve Goodman’s
train song, “City of New Orleans,” including an
extra bridge concocted by John Denver, comes
off tight and free, modestly giving a sense of the
command Arganoff has of his own voice. There’s
lots of fun bundled up in “The Princess and the
Frog,” and in the end it passes the acid test. Next,
he goes gospel on us, with the moving “Now Is
the Cool of the Day.” Another Amen.
Although Agranoff adds his own touches to
almost all the arrangements on this CD, “The
Ballad of Captain Crunch” is his only original
piece. It’s a humorous poem, written in what I
think is called anapestic tetrameter (no, that isn’t
a strange glandular malfunction relieved only by
medical Marijuana), involving Ma Bell and some
phone hackers. Just this tale alone is worth the
purchase price of the album.
Recorded live at Bound for Glory, “Older Than
Everybody” embodies that great sing-along feel
of a good old hootenanny. Stan Roger’s “The
Mary Ellen Carter” is delivered in robust 1960s
folk fashion with the help of the group Gathering
Time. A made-for-concertina piece, Diana Hansen leads into the CD’s farewell, “Parting Glass.”
You’ll want to linger just a wee bit longer, and not
let go too quickly of this very enjoyable collection
of folk material.
