Canton Farmer’s Market 2013 #11
BY John Berbrich
A woman hands me a piece of Rugelach
Hot in the sunshine
And another
The young folksinger strums his guitar
And another
Warbles a Jerry Garcia tune
“It’s Jewish,” she says
While the guy across the street
And it’s delicious
Tries to drown him out
Every piece
With a riding lawnmower
I look up
The singer is joined by a woman
Not a cloud in the sky
Who sings “House of the Rising Sun”
Not even a ghost rider
Nice applause
Joined by some young kids
An older folksinger takes over
The little band leads a sing-along
A red bandana wrapped around his head
“You Are My Sunshine”
Sings “Ghost Riders in the Sky”
Two Books Highlight Life in the
Adirondacks and North Country
Two recently released books co-edited by a
St. Lawrence University alumnus and a former
St. Lawrence visiting professor highlight life and
living in Northern New York State and the Adirondacks through a collection of reflective personal
essays written by regional authors.
“Adirondack Reflections” and “North Country
Reflections” illustrate both the pleasantries and
the hardships of living in the far northern reaches
of New York State and in the rugged terrain and climate of the Adirondack Mountains. Published by
The History Press of Charleston, S.C., more than
50 writers, artists and photographers contributed
to the two volumes, including several St. Lawrence
University alumni, faculty and staff.
Neal Burdick ’72 co-edited the two books
along with Maurice Kenny of Saranac Lake, N.Y.
Kenny has written more than 30 collections of
poetry and fiction. He has received an honorary
doctorate from St. Lawrence University, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and won the American
Book Award in 1984. Kenny also has taught as a
visiting professor at St. Lawrence.
Burdick, who currently works as the director
of editorial services for St. Lawrence University’s
Communications division, said the books are a
true testament to life in Northern New York.
“These authors live or have lived in the region
as opposed to someone who comes here to vacation and goes back to the city to reflect on the experience,” Burdick said. “People don’t think there
is much writing going on here and that most writing societies exist in urban areas. But there’s a lot
of writing activity in this region. We wanted to give
regional writers a forum to let the world know they
exist and to let each other know they exist.”
For Burdick, two essays in particular illustrate
the dichotomy of life in Northern New York State.
“One story is about cross-country skiing in
the moonlight, while another is about being the
daughter of a prison guard,” Burdick said. “There
is both a lightness and a darkness of living in the
North Country. It is a region of great contrasts.”
Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY),
which is located at 53 Main Street in Canton, will
host a book signing and reading for “Adirondack
Reflections” and “North Country Reflections” at 7
p.m. Thursday, July 27. Several of the book contributors will read from their essays and reflect on
their writings. Both books will be on sale at TAUNY.

Knowledge
By Valerie Harrington
Of this I know not, but it is there.
I thirst, but no liquid can quench.
I hunger, but no food source can fill my desire. Lingering in thought.
An albatross of sorts weighing me down.
Searching for something.
If only there were an answer.
Something of value of worth.
Something to fill this hollow space, I hold with- An answer to fill this void.
Maybe then I stop searching.

Molly Gushea, teacher, and Kieran Singh lead the group during a theatre game during
the SLC Arts Festival’s Freeze Frame Theatre class.
Downtown Snell Hall was filled with drumbeats, theatre games, painting, poetry, and
sculpture as students participated in the SLC
Arts Festival for young people: Art in Motion
on Saturday, June 15. Len Mackey, a Potsdam
native, entertained the crowd of young artists,
teachers, parents, and staff during a noon concert of West African-style music on the lawn.
Throughout the day students ages 7-13 attended
four unique classes out of the nine offered for
the day. Classes included: Jackson Pollack Drip
Painting, Treads & Tracks T-shirt Design, West
African Drumming, Hot Air Balloon Sculptures,
Sumi-e Brush Painting, Freeze-frame Theatre,
Performance Poetry, Puppets with Personality,
and Transparency Mobiles.
The responses from students at the end of
the day ranged from “Awesome to Great!” One
parent sent a note in response to the day, “My
daughter had a fabulous time today. Thank
you…Thank you very much for bringing this
event to our community. She hopes you do it
again!” As people drove by Downtown Snell Hall
they heard laughter and delighted squeals from
the kids as they learned how paint like Jackson
Pollock and play the djembe like Len on the lawn.
“It’s not every day that kids are free to explore their creativity and artistic potential. We
were thrilled to offer this program for the young
people in our area,” responded Rebekah WilkinsPepiton, Executive Director, SLC Arts Council.
Art in Motion was the theme for the first SLC
Arts Festival for Young People. All the classes
engaged the participants in highly active activities in a variety of disciplines. “It made me smile
to see the kids so happy, exploring their creative
side with their friends, having an educational
experience in a no-pressure, fun-focused environment,” remarked Suzy McBroom, Grants &
Education Coordinator, SLC Arts Council.
The 2013 SLC Arts Festival: Art in Motion was
made possible by generous donations from several sponsors: Stewart’s Shops, SeaComm Federal Credit Union, Community Bank N.A., Coakley
Ace Hardware, and Price Chopper #46 in Canton.
SLC Arts is committed to Building Community
through the Arts by providing art education,
support for artists, and community enrichment
programs for people of all ages and abilities.
Workshops and classes are offered throughout
the year by area teaching artists.
SLC Arts has many other opportunities for
artists listed on their website: www.slcartscouncil.org > For Artists > Opportunities. For more
information about SLC Arts events, classes, and
programs call: 315-265-6860 or email [email protected].

STOLF’S OLDIES
K’s and Doubles
---STOLF
Baseball!…and the Golden Age of Batter’s
Strikeouts is truly upon us. Remember when
Bobby Bonds struck out 187 times in 1969, then
upped it to 189 a year later? That record held for
34 years before Adam Dunn whiffed 195 times
in 2004…then Ryan Howard’s 199 in 2007, and
Mark Reynolds’ 204 in 2008, the first player to
crack the 200 strikeout plateau. That’s happened
4 more times since, with Reynolds holding the record of 223 in 2009…Adam Dunn just missed last
year with 222.
For teammates, Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinksi’s mark of 331 with the Phils in 1975 has been
bettered 18 times since 2001…tops is 383, Reynolds and Adam LaRoche with Arizona in 2010.
As for pitchers…back on May 10th, Tampa’s
Alex Cobb struck out 4 Padres in the top of the
3rd, said to be the 66th time that’s happened in the
Bigs. I know, 3 outs per inning…except when the
catcher drops the third strike. Then, if first base
is empty, or if there are 2 outs, the batter has a
chance to make it to first.
This is a very old rule, based on the idea that to
register an out, the fielder ought to securely hold
the ball, whether in the field, at a base, or behind
the plate. In this case, the batter Will Venable
swung on a wild pitch for strike 3, then scrambled
safely to first. Are you coached to do that…swing
at a wild pitch when you have 2 strikes then take
off for first? Doubt it...who can think that fast?
Believe it or not, 5 strikeouts in one inning has
happened at least 3 times in the minor leagues,
most recently in 2008. And on April 7, 1976, pitching for the Astros in the first inning of a spring
training game against the Twins in New Orleans,
Joe Niekro also struck out 5. Not surprisingly,
catcher Cliff Johnson was charged with 5 passed
balls that inning alone.
Speaking of strikeouts, when the Milwaukee
Brewers set a strikeout record of 1399 in 2001,
they also became the first team ever to have more
strikeouts than hits, 1399 to 1378. That didn’t
happen again until 2010, when Arizona set a new
mark, fanning an astonishing 1529 times…to only
1366 hits. Since then, more strikeouts than hits
has happened 7 more times…compare that with
1927 when every one of the 16 major league teams
had at least 1000 more hits than strikeouts…the
record came in 1930…NY Giants with +1387…on
1769 hits and only 382 strikeouts.
Arizona’s -163 still stands as the record low,
but the average margin per team been dropping
precipitously….from +400 ten years ago to about
+200 last year. And the average difference per
team thru the first 2 months of this season was a
mere +65. If this trend continues, it won’t be long
before every team routinely strikes out more times
than they hit safely. Talk about the changing face
of the game.
On to doubles…last month the Elias Sports
Bureau reported that Oriole Chris Davis was the
“fastest to 20/20”…he already had 20 home runs
when he hit his 20th double of the season in his
58th game. Previously it was 60 games by Mel Ott
in 1929 and Ivan Rodriquez in 2000.
This pronouncement irked me…it took me
back to the 1995 season, when it was said that
Cleveland’s Albert Belle, with 50 homers and 52
doubles, was the first ever to top 50 in both cat-
10
egories. What about Babe Ruth in 1921…when he
had 59 homers and 44 doubles? I know, 44 isn’t
more than 50…but he also had 16 triples! How
many triples did Albert Belle have? One. See where
this is going?
What is a triple after all? It’s a double where
you take an extra base…either because you hit
the ball where the outfielders are having trouble
getting to it, or because you’re running extra fast.
So if Babe had stopped at second base 6 times,
he would have had 50 doubles, and would have
matched Belle’s “record.” Instead, he turned 6
doubles into triples, and thus wasn’t as “good” as
Belle. Doesn’t make any sense, does it?
Now the significance of triples has changed
over the years…when you talk about unbreakable
records, one of the surest bets has to be Chief Wilson’s 36 triples in 1912 for the Pirates. How in the
world could he have that many? Two reasons: ball
parks were bigger…Pittsburg’s Forbes Field was
462 to dead center…and he hit 24 of his 36 triples
there. Plus in that “dead ball” era, batters didn’t
swing for the fences, but instead tried to line the
ball…that meant outfielders played shallower…
and getting it over their heads meant extra bases.
So I thought of the concept of “leg hits”…doubles plus triples. Not to take anything away from
Belle…he and Ruth are the only two players to
ever have 50+ leg hits and 50+ homers in the same
season. And only 6 other times has a player hit 50+
homers and 40+ leg hits…Ruth again, Hack Wilson, Jimmie Foxx twice, Brady Anderson, and Luis
Gonzalez…those last 2, alas, in the steroid era.
By way of comparison, Mark McGwire hit 50+
homers in 4 straight seasons, 1996-99…his totals: 245 HR, 90 doubles, 1 triple. Likewise Sammy Sosa from 1998-2001: 243 HR, 116 doubles, 8
triples. And further back, in 1961 Roger Maris’ 61
homers was accompanied by just 16 doubles and
4 triples…and in 1955, Willie Mays had 51 homers, 18 doubles, but 13 triples.
Point is, you ought not to talk about records
involving doubles without taking a peek at the next
column over, triples. Better yet, combine doubles
and triples as leg hits and you really see what’s
what. Like Chuck Klein in 1930…40 homers and
67 leg hits. Rogers Hornsby in 1922…42 homers
and 60 leg hits. Or Todd Helton over the 2 year
span of 2000-2001…. 91 homers and 117 leg
hits. Then again, what do you make of Cleveland
outfielder Dale Mitchell’s stats from 1949? 16
doubles, 23 triples…great acceleration turning the
corner at second, must be. In the dead-ball era,
more triples than doubles was seen a lot…but not
in 1949!
The record for doubles 67 by Earl Webb of
the Boston Red Sox in 1931…and he added just
3 triples. The record for leg hits is 77, Ducky
Medwick of the Cardinals in 1936, 64+13. Shoeless Joe Jackson has the most extra bases on leg
hits (1 base for double, 2 bases for triple) with 96
in 1912…44+26. But keep an eye on Baltimore’s
Manny Machado…thru 70 games this season,
he’s on a pace to hit 74 doubles and 79 leg hits…
wow!
One caveat: leg hits should really include inside-the-park home runs too…sadly, traditional
stats don’t break down homers that way, so for
now, we’ll leave it at doubles plus triples.

HEADLINER ACTS ANNOUNCED
FOR BASSMASTER FESTIVAL
(June 20) – An “American Idol” finalist, a
chart-topping singer described as country music’s
“Gen-Y family man,” and Central New York’s most
popular country band will take the stage on consecutive days of the Bassmaster Elite Series Evan
Williams Bourbon Showdown at the St. Lawrence
River in Waddington this August.
Bucky Covington, a best-selling country singer
and finalist in Season Five of Fox-TV’s “American
Idol,” will perform on Friday, August 9, from 7:30
to 9 p.m. Jason Michael Carroll, whose first album
debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums
chart, will perform on Saturday, August 10 from
7:30 to 9 p.m. And Chris Taylor and the Custom
Taylor Band, last year voted Best Country Band by
Syracuse New Times, will play on Sunday, August
11 from 1 to 3 p.m.
All three concerts take place in Whittaker Park
in Waddington. They’re part of the Tastes and
Talents of the North Country Festival that will run
concurrently with the Bassmaster tournament
happening August 8 to 11.
Like virtually all of the Festival activities, the
concerts are free of charge to the public – though
not to the Village of Waddington, host of the national fishing tournament. Local organizers believe
that having Covington and Carroll – as well as the
popular regional country band led by Chris Taylor
– will serve to further boost crowd numbers.
Local talent will be represented too. Perfor-
mances are expected from the Backroad Bluegrass Band, Crunchenstein, Waydown Wailers,
the Acoustic Brothers, Atomic Precipitation, Lacey
Stoddard, Kaitlyn LaShomb, Troy O’Brien, and Nick
Rycroft. Also, the Native North American Traveling
College will be pay tribute to Native American culture through song and dance on the afternoon of
Friday August 9.
The combination of the premier bass fishing
tournament with a free Festival means that there
is literally something for everyone during the four
days of the Evan Williams Bourbon Showdown at
the St. Lawrence River. Highlights include:
The chance to see 100 of the world’s best anglers compete for a first prize of $100,000 and an
instant entry in the 2014 Bassmaster Classic out of
Birmingham, Alabama.
Some 100 vendors including artists, crafters,
food and wine purveyors and producers, local services especially aimed at anglers, town and village
Chambers of Commerce, and community organizations.
Special features such as a kids’ corner; “The
Hawg Trough,” a 50-foot mobile fish tank; a mobile
fishing simulator that will allow people to “fight”
trophy sport fish; a mobile fishing pond; and an
interactive birds of prey show.

The Russell Theater is proud
to present Alex Smith
The Russell Theater is proud to present Alex
Smith on Saturday July 13th at 7 PM.
Alex Smith grew up in Long Lake, NY, in the
heart of the Adirondack Mountains. The son of a
boatbuilder/writer/banjo player and a historian,
Smith has been immersed in the folk tradition
from a very young age. Around his home, Pete
Seeger and Bob Dylan were constantly present on
the airwaves.
Smith began writing and playing traditional
folk songs at the age of 12 or 13, and has not
stopped since. Coming from a community
steeped in tradition, Smith’s environment offers
plenty of material for contemporary songs. The
work of Adirondack folk legends Dan Berggren,
Chris Shaw, and Peggy Lynn were extremely influential, as was Canadian artist Stan Rogers.
It is the work of Rogers that Smith considers to be his greatest influence. The shared idea
of ‘promoting a sense of pride in the traditions
of one’s culture, while at the same time speaking
about the issues presented to it in modern times’,
that is the backbone of Smith’s music.
“A talented and impressive young songwriter,
singer, and musician from Long Lake in the Adirondacks,...” writes Mike Alzo, Host of the Folk

1. Melanie (born Melanie Anne Safka-Schekeryk), in 1970. The
inspiration for the song is said to have come during her appearance at Woodstock when the audience lit candles.
2. Barry Manilow, in 1977. Contrary to what the title implies,
the song is about two people who made it apart, rather than
together.
3. Fleetwood Mac, 1969. The song was used in films “Loser”
(2000) and “The Damned United” (2009).
4. Dexys Midnight Runners released the song in 1980 as a tribute to soul great Geno Washington.
5. “A Well Respected Man,” in 1965 by The Kinks. The song
was written to mock the condescending attitudes of the British
upper class after one experience staying at a luxury resort.

Come and experience the spirit of the red,
white and blue, and the pride of being American,
in Clayton on July 2nd as the Clayton Community
Band presents its “PATRIOTIC SPECTACULAR”
concert at 7 PM in the Clayton Opera House! Under
the direction of Gloria Hvizdos Musser, the Band
will honor our nation with this patriotic musical
salute. Additionally, the concert will be presented
as a benefit for Hospice of Jefferson County and
the Clayton Opera House.
Reflections upon our nation’s steadfast spirit,
our multiple freedoms, our past and present service men and women, and our compassion for
our fellow Americans will reverberate through the
Opera House on July 2nd, as audience members
are ‘swept up’ into the stirring and powerful patriotic music performed by the Band. All will be
acquainted with the classic musical renditions of
“America; the Beautiful” and “Battle Hymn of the
Republic”; the majestic “This Is My Country”;
the intense “1812 Overture” - complete with the
sounds of chimes and cannon; and two of John
Philip Sousa’s marches – “The Liberty Bell” and
“The Stars and Stripes Forever”. Band member
and vocalist Rick Badour will sing with the Band
as it performs “God Bless the U.S.A.”. The Band
will present the vivid and programmatic “Victory
at Sea” music of Richard Rodgers from the 195253 TV documentary (and subsequent 1954 movie)
about naval warfare during World War II. Members
of our nation’s military branches will be honored
in “Armed Forces Salute”. Music from the movie
“Gettysburg”; “When Honor Prevails” – based
on ‘Chester’ which was a popular Revolutionary
War era song; a piece of reflection and inspiration entitled “And Hold In Memory …”; “The Star-
Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” will
complete the program. Concert-goers of all ages
are welcome to attend this concert, celebrating the
powerful American patriotic spirit in all of us!
In addition to the July 2nd concert, the
Clayton Community Band’s 2013 concert season
will include the following dates, with all of the
programs being held at 7 PM at the Clayton Opera
House, where the Band has been designated as its
Resident Ensemble: August 20th, October 8th and
December 3rd (the Band’s Holiday Concert).
The Clayton Opera house is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible. People needing extra assistance entering the Opera House for
the July 2nd concert may contact the Opera House
ahead of time at 686-2200. Admission to the concert is $5.00. Any student accompanied by an adult
