30 Years of Leadership & Legacy
Our conference kicks off with a very special celebration of 30 years of TCWSE history and its past
presidents. As you’ll learn from this session, TCWSE is not about career advancement for fame or
fortune but rather for bringing the best people—female and male—into leadership positions,
thus ensuring the best possible education for our students. As TCWSE’s beloved Pat Shell said
over and over, “It’s all about the kids!” We’ll also share a video highlighting the vision and special
gifts of our past presidents and how those have been woven into and strengthened the fabric of
the organization.

2nd General Session/Celebration and Awards Luncheon (Rachel White)
Presiding:
Jean Bahney, Principal, Austin ISD, and 2013 TCWSE President
Speaker:
Rachel White, Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Pennsylvania
Salon D
Will Power: How Self-Control and Grit Contribute to Success
Does it take more than intelligence to succeed? What has scientific research discovered about
competencies other than intelligence that predict success in—and beyond—the classroom?…
in life? Dr. White talks to us about self-control (regulating attention, emotion, and behavior in the
face of momentary temptation and distraction) and grit (perseverance and passion for long-term
goals). She discusses how these competencies (or lack thereof ) play out in children and adults;
their relationship to traditional measures of achievement; and learnable, teachable strategies
that facilitate their expression for students (and teachers).
2:15-3:15 p.m.
Focus Session #3
In Rooms Assigned
Iron Jawed Angels
Presenter:
406
Christine Drew, President and Chief Creative Officer, Syfr
True grit and persistence over time and obstacles create successful careers. What do we all have
in common with the early 20th century suffragettes? Be inspired by these models of tenacity as
we remember the legacy of these great leaders and apply their lessons to our lives. The session
also gives women leaders some ideas for inspiring students to look for lessons from history for
leadership. The movie Iron Jawed Angels inspired this session.
Compensation and Retirement Planning for Women School Executives
Presenters:
408
Mike Cochran, Partner and Chairman, and Mark Woolery, Chief Marketing Officer, TCG Group
Holdings, LLC
All educators have special financial and retirement planning needs that are very different from
the private sector. This session focuses on financial decisions that women school executives need
to consider (particularly regarding employment agreements), the effects of the new TRS rules
on retirement planning, how much needs to be invested prior to retirement, things to avoid in
planning for retirement, and (briefly) how TRS affects Social Security benefits.
Mastering the Art and Science of Learning
Presenter:
410
Elizabeth Clark, Associate Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction, Birdville ISD
This session examines the art and science of masterful teaching and how effective leaders must
grow and develop teachers so that a highly skilled and extremely motivated teacher leads every
single classroom. Optimal learning is the new normal. In order for academic excellence to be
achieved, leaders need to be thoroughly grounded in and knowledgeable of the pedagogical
practices that cause learning at advanced levels to occur. What are the implications for TCWSE?

Opportunities to be explored include:
Get Organized • Save Time • Get More Done! — Helene Segura, MA Ed, CPO®, Author/Speaker/
Productivity Consultant, LivingOrder San Antonio
The author of two Amazon Best Sellers and the featured productivity expert in over 60 interviews,
Helene Segura specializes in lowering stress levels. A former Teacher of the Year, Helene’s
professional development workshops help teachers discover how to control the five key areas
of the school day.
Leadership: A Trait that Never Retires! — Dr. Yvonne Katz, Superintendent (ret.)/Trustee, Alamo
Community College District
Learn how you can utilize your well-honed leadership abilities to “pay it forward” in your
community. There is lots of life after retirement!
Retirement = Repurposed for Success — Nancy K. Vaughan, Retired Superintendent; Consultant,
NKV Consulting; and Assessment Coordinator, Lake Worth ISD
I’ve experienced successful school opportunities for more than 30 years in Texas. After retirement,
I began a journey of facilitating systems for administrators to follow and find the same success
and systems of support along the way. Whether working as a Professional Support Provider (PSP)
for a school in need of improvement or as a private consultant, the systems I have learned to put
in place and the skills I facilitate for success are what makes the journey all the more enjoyable.
The Path to Higher Education — Shirley J. Mills, Associate Professor, University of Texas–Pan
American
After a full career in K-12 education, Dr. Mills came to a fork in the road—remain in the classroom
until retirement or pursue a terminal degree and move into higher education. The path was dotted
with potholes and a few uphill spots, but it was worth it! Being a professor is an opportunity to
“pass it on” and give back to the profession to the highest degree.
Empowered Leadership — Charlene Simpson, Deputy Director, Academic and Administrative
Services, ESC Region 12
Education Service Center Region 12 provides leadership opportunities at both the administrative
and specialist level. All employees are leaders in their respective area of expertise, based on prior
experience and responsibilities. All staff members, regardless of position, are empowered to lead
in a positive, supportive environment.
The Journey’s Precious Gifts — Juneria Berges, Executive Director and Co-Founder, Anchors for Life
Foundation
As we travel through our lives, we gather many gifts that lead us to the next crossroad. Once
there, life demands that a choice be made. At the time, we cannot imagine anything worse, yet
upon reflection, every step of our journey guides us forward in fulfilling our purpose of life.
