New Country Club and POA
Board Members Elected
Art Newman and Don Schindel to Serve as Presidents
At the annual meetings of the Country Club and POA, the results of
the elections were announced.
George Gering, Curt Karpel and Allen Kilik were elected to the
Board of Governors, with Abby Boden, Mimi Klein, Marshall Pekin,
Sid Silver and Alan Tarter elected to the nominating committee.
All proposed amendments to the by-laws were passed, by an overwhelming majority.
New members of the POA Board are Charla Levine and Andy Lynette, with Don Schindel being re-elected.
Many thanks to all of those members who have served with distinction, with special appreciation to past Country Club
President Murray Gross and POA President Bob Davidoff.

From the President......
Art Newman
As the new President, I have been asked what
my “vision” is for Delaire. I believe in a team
approach to leadership and have always felt
that although we may be concerned about the
present, the future is rapidly approaching. Your
newly elected Board of Governors is dedicated to maintaining Delaire
as the finest residential country club community in Southern Florida. In order to maintain our excellence, we must have an ever-evolving
strategic plan that includes both focusing on immediate improvements
and long-term goals. Our plans and strategies must remain flexible as
the landscape in which the Club operates continues to evolve. Your
Board of Governors will work hard to exceed the service expectations
of the membership, maintain our financial excellence and stay ahead
of the curve to set us apart from the other local clubs. This can only
be achieved with assistance from our professional staff and outside
experts. There is no doubt that the current state of Delaire is strong. I assume
the Presidency with a strong foundation that has been built by my
predecessors. I intend to continually consult with the Club’s past
presidents and will call upon their leadership to enhance the many
attributes that make Delaire a very special place for all of us.
As we near the end of this winter season and many members start
to travel for the summer, please remember that Delaire does not
slow down. More than half of the membership is comprised of yearrounders and the summer months have become increasingly more
vibrant. The responsibilities of the Board and the workings of the
committees cannot afford to take a summer vacation.
For those of you that will be leaving for the summer, you will be
missing out on so many great things:
1. No traffic
2. No waiting lines at restaurants
3. Extreme heat and humidity
4. Afternoon thunderstorms
I cannot stress enough that the Board of Governors consists of
members that volunteer their time and energy to lead our Club. Trent
Squire and our professional staff strive to make our country club
experience the very best that it can be. We are all in this together. When you see a Board member, thank him for his efforts on your behalf. When you see a staff member, thank him or her for their service.
As always, members of the Board of Governors are available to
speak to you on any issues, ideas or concerns that you may have.
We are always seeking new ways to enhance the Delaire experience.
Let’s enjoy the Club and the relationships with our fellow members.

important
months
for Delaire in many
ways: our new Board
is seated; committee
members are selected;
and even though we
will begin to see the
car carriers, there is much to accomplish
in the short period before we actually say
goodbye to our seasonal members.
The seasonal calendar, which includes all
of the club’s activities, is the real foundation
upon which department heads create
the picture of the upcoming season and
establish the budget that will be required to
execute that image. It is extremely important
that there is a sense of urgency on behalf
of the Board, committees and staff to dig
in and establish our calendar of events
before the current season ends. The work
must commence immediately, so valuable
input from both seasonal and year round
committee members is gathered before
people return to their summer destinations
or begin taking vacations.
It is not always easy or even possible to
execute each and every idea in a single
season, but with good, well rounded and
diverse efforts, we can certainly create a
great schedule that will have something for
everyone.
Please remember that input is not only
necessary for the social calendar, but for
all activities throughout the club, including
golf, tennis, fitness and beyond.

Fitness Facts..... by Phil Bayne, Fitness Center Director
To hit your longest, most solid shots, you need to make a full turn. This allows you to
widen your swing arc and generate more club head speed. Flexibility is the key. The
flexibility of some of the Tour’s big hitters like Fred Couples, Rory Mcllroy and Tiger
Woods is, in large part, God given, but they understand the importance of stretching.
While many amateurs stretch their shoulders and back, they often overlook their hips. And if you’re able
to make a wider, unrestricted hip turn, you’ll find that your shoulder turn will increase dramatically.
Sit on the ground with your legs extending straight out in front of you. Lift your right leg and cross it over
your left, so that your right foot is planted on the ground next to the outside of your left knee. With your
left arm, reach over your right leg so that your left elbow is on the outside of your right knee. Now, rotate
your torso to the right until you feel the stretch in your right hip. Do three repetitions of 10 seconds on
each side.
Perform this drill every day and before each round. You’ll quickly notice improved flexibility and will
soon be able to make a bigger turn for longer shots.
Exercise Repairs the Brain

Exercise has been shown to have numerous benefits, even at the
level of brain cells. For example, regular vigorous exercise has
been shown to cause special cells in the brain to increase their
production of repair chemicals called neurotrophins.
People with Alzheimer’s disease have been shown to have much
lower levels of neurotrophins than normal.
In addition, exercise improves blood flow to the brain and increases
protective antioxidant enzymes. People with minimal cognitive
impairment, thought by some to be an early stage of dementia,
can reverse memory problems with regular exercise combined
with a proper diet.
Exercise causes the body to produce tremendous concentrations
and types of free radicals and the production lasts for hours after
the exercise is finished.
White most exercises are good, it is important to exercise all
of the muscles and to always include resistance exercises, as
these build and prevent muscle loss, strengthen spinal discs and
ligaments, and prevent loss of bone calcium.
After exercise it is important to re-hydrate. You should drink at
lease 12 to 16 ounces of water after you exercise.

From the POA
Your POA Board would like to thank everyone for helping make this community an outstanding place to live and play. We
don’t often have the opportunity to reach out to the membership personally to ask for their assistance in making Delaire even
more successful. Please take a moment to review the following list of requests.
1. Please request that your landscaper trim all trees, hedges, and plants so they do not block the sidewalks in front or on
the side of their homes.
2. Please request that guests, visitors, repairmen, etc. park in your driveway when possible. This will reduce the number of
cars and trucks parked on our streets and make it easier for all of us to navigate the Delaire roadways.
3. Please make sure not to block the sidewalks with any vehicle at anytime except of course in the case of an emergency.
4. Please remove any items such as reflectors or chains blocking or denoting driveways that are on the part of your property
that is controlled by the POA.
5. Please take a look at your home and if it is need of painting, landscape improvements, roof cleaning or rust stain removal
please address these issues. This not only makes Delaire look better, but may increase property values.
6. Our rules require that there be a light on in front of each home all night. We ask that you please comply. The easy solution
is to put a dusk to dawn sensor or timer on one of your front lights,
7. Please obey all of our traffic rules, including, but not limited to, speed limits and a complete stop at all stop signs. We ask
you to please remind all your guests or service people to comply as well.
8. Trash and recycle bins should be placed at the curb after 5:00 pm on the day prior to pick-up.
9. Planning some exterior changes to your home? All changes must have prior approval from the Architectural Review
Committee. Forms are available in the office.

The Guardhouse is being inundated with members attempting
to call in their guests and vendors verbally rather than
use the required automated system we have in place. We
have one guard answering your calls as well as processing all
of the traffic entering the community. This makes it difficult for
the guard to do both jobs with the professionalism we demand.

Women’s Golf

WOW, the women have been busy playing golf!! These past few months
have been filled with our annual golf tournaments and new exciting golf
events. One such event was the Mixed Ryder Cup. About 100 men and
women participated in this 2-day event consisting of four 9-hole matches.
On Monday evening at a fun cocktail party, the players eagerly gathered to
hear Joe randomly select flighted teams and partners. Tuesday morning
the competition began. After the first day, the 2 teams were tied. On
Wednesday, the Black and White team pulled ahead and won by 4 points.
Another new golf tournament this season was the home and away interclub
matches with St. Andrew’s Country Club open to all 18-hole golf members.
The participants enjoyed 2 days of competitive match play with golfers of
comparable ability. After the first day we were trailing by only 4 points,
but the second day of competition found us victorious. We trounced our
opponents, 401.5 points to 372.5 points! The Delaire/St. Andrew’s interclub
plaque will soon be proudly displayed in our trophy case.
Another new DWGA program will be commencing this summer. A team
of mid to higher handicap players is being formed to compete in a local
interclub league. Any DWGA member with a 21 or higher handicap,
PLEASE call Joy Fedelim (266-3838) to sign up. What a fun, competitive
way to enjoy playing other courses in the area and meeting other golfers.
Our official season is coming to a close with Club Championship week and
the Spring Closing ABCD tournament and luncheon. At this year’s final
luncheon meeting, members will be asked to approve our newly revised
By-Laws. The DWGA By-Laws have not been revised since 2001. It is
necessary to bring our By-laws into line with Delaire Country Club’s ByLaws and in accordance with the current practices of our organization. The
revised By-Laws are posted in the Women’s Locker Room for your review.

From Legal & By-Laws

By the time this issue reaches your home, I am hoping you will have new Delaire books. These new books will include the updated bylaws, updated rules, Articles of Incorporation and all the other documents we have had in our book.
A few things however, will change:
• It will be 8.5 x 11 instead of the small size we have had for years. There will be blank space built into the Rules so as they change;
you can be sent replacement pages without disrupting several pages for one small change.
• The pages will also have a footer showing the date last updated. This will be helpful in being sure you are looking at a current
version when discussing issues.
• The roster should be easier to produce and hopefully save some time producing it.
So if you haven’t gotten your new book yet, be prepared. The old books are so out of date we wanted to replace them with something
different, so you can transfer all those little notes to your new books and then throw the old ones out.
Lastly, keep in mind that the current Articles of Incorporation, by-laws, rules, and the roster are kept on the Delaire web page in the
“Members Only” section. If you need help getting to that section, please stop in the office or call Liz and she can help you.Cupio, spicae

Play for P.I.N.K.
Big Success

Play for P.I.N.K. is a nationwide effort benefiting
the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).
100% of all the funds raised are donated to the
B.C.R.F., which has raised $29.75 million to date,
helping to keep researchers at the forefront of
discovery and progress. Delaire has designated
“Play for P.I.N.K.” as its main charitable event.
We are proud to report that the tournament,
combined with our “Yappy Hour,” raised $69,960
this year.
A special thank you to the planning committee
who worked with me: Cathy Cutler-Salzman,
Annette “Babe” DeLuca, Deb Kaplan, Ellen
Lynette, Marilyn Nebel, Bonnie Schwartz,
Simone Spies, Judy Tarter and Toni Taylor. Also
thanks to the folks who led the charge in putting

Lifelong Learning...
I “Googled” “learning for seniors” and the Google search engine spit out over 33 Million
results! That tells me there is a tremendous amount of interest on the Internet in senior
learning and it also tells me that learning as we get older is just as important as learning when we are young.
Think about it. We go to the fitness center to exercise our bodies and we often do it side-by-side with our children
or grandchildren. It is just as important (actually, in my mind, more important) to exercise our minds and to do it on
a regular basis.
The Internet provides so much information for those of us who want to learn almost anything. Do you want to learn
more about photography or art or cooking or horticulture? Just Google those topics and you will find hundreds of
places to go to take courses and get step by step instruction… many of them free! If your doorbell is not working,
you could call an electrician and pay $300.00 or Google “how do I replace my doorbell,” go to Home Depot, buy
$5.00 worth of parts and replace the broken piece in a few minutes. If you want to bake some bread for a special
occasion, Google “bread making” and get over 200 million results, many of which include step-by-step videos! If
you want to learn about calculus, enroll in a free Massive Open Online course at Harvard and learn from the best!
There is a real uprising in how education is delivered these days and it is not just education for the young. Seniors
are a big part of the movement. Free courses abound and if you want to pay a few bucks, you find some real
bargains that will teach you something and give your brain a real workout. The busier you keep those little neurons
firing, the healthier they will stay. Learning should go on for your entire life. It will keep you fit and young.
