Course Description and Map
Preliminary “Lap and a half”: From start area left onto Harry’s Loop, clockwise around Dark Hole Pond;
moderately rolling terrain with a 25 meter climb near the 2 km point, At Bear Pond Junction (near 3 km)
everyone goes right onto the Winter Games trail; up a moderate hill(20 m) then down to the start area.
Proceed around Harry’s Loop again.
This time turn left at Bear Pond Junction; across a bog then up a long moderate climb (20m), then a nice
downhill cruise.
15km Junior Route: Goes “180’ to the right at the marked junction, up a moderate grade then up a long
steep hill (40m approx.) then across a meadow to the refreshment station at Summit Junction. Up another
long but moderate hill to the Northwest Notch. You are now “on top” of the course! Along 1/2km meadow
( which can be cold and windswept). Next there is a long downhill coming off the meadow; two tricky
turns near the top (which will be marked) plus some good step-turn terrain near the bottom. A gentle
climb to the junction at Glen’s Trail. Next, there are some great downhill slopes to Prairie Pond Trail. Be
careful at the marked “180” hairpin half way down. Finally there’s a mostly downhill run to the finish.
25 km loop: As above, to the 15km turnoff; proceed straight along a long gentle downhill, then three sharp
uphill climbs to Bear Pond cabin. Proceed along the short flat, then up the long hill(1km, 100m el.) to the
Summit; there are some gentler portions between three nasty rises. Gentler up and down cruising to
Summit Junction and refreshment station, then up a long but moderate hill to the NW Notch. Down a ½
km meadow (which can be cold and windswept). There is a long downhill coming off the meadow; two
tricky turns at the top (which will be marked), plus some good step-turn terrain near the bottom. This is
followed by a gentle climb to the junction with Glen’s trail (30m). Across a bog then a series of gentle
downgrades with two long fast downhill’s, to bring you to Prairie Pond Cabin and the next refreshment
station. Prairie Pond trail consists of about 2km of repeated uphill’s, the last one being a bit challenging
(after 40 km!). Then it’s mostly downhill and a fun run to the finish, especially with a tail wind.
41 km course: Proceed through the lap lane to the refreshment station at the Lee Churchill Chalet. You
now cross the road to start another lap around Harry’s, Bear Pond, and Summit etc. The road crossing will
be heavily marshaled, but be extra cautious.
