Caroline Springs RSL Sub Branch Formed
On Friday the 21st of this month
history for Caroline Springs was
being made.
In about June 2013 two local
residents [Murray Lewis and
Peter Burquest] set out to fulfil a
request made by several who
attended the inaugural Dawn
Service on Anzac Day in April.
At first the desire wasnʼt all that
great, but with support from
some of the Patronage and
management at The Club
Caroline Springs, the challenge
developed momentum.
A meeting was advertised to
take place in August at the

proposed home for the Sub
Branch
“The
Club”,
to
determine how much of an
interest there really was.
Some 40 attended so the seed
was sown.
In November the Sub Branch
had around 13 members
[mostly committee] and about
$65 to spend. We now have
around 85 members and
steadily growing.
All this hard work
culminated in what
took place on
Friday the 21st,
the
Official
opening of the
Caroline Springs
RSL Sub Branch
at The Club.
This would be a 3 page article if
I were to go into the details of
what it took to finally get it
through, but I can say it was a
lot of work.
In October we received the
Charter from Anzac House
which meant we could now
begin operating. We elected a
great committee to operate and
began finding out how and what
we now needed to do.

Melton
City
Council
has
welcomed
the
State
Governmentʼs announcement of
$60,000 in funding for a new
Menʼs
Shed
at
Morton
Homestead in Taylors Hill. The
Menʼs Shed will complement the
existing Council services that
operate from the site.
Melton City Council Mayor, Cr
Bob Turner said the Menʼs Shed
would become an important
community resource for men
living in the Eastern Corridor.
“The Menʼs Shed at Morton
Homestead will provide an
opportunity for men to socialise,
be active, work on community
projects, share skills and interests
with other men or drop-in for
some quiet time or a chat over
coffee,” Cr Turner said.
The Menʼs Shed will also provide
links to information and services
about
menʼs
health
and
wellbeing.
The new Menʼs Shed at Morton
Homestead is one of forty-one
new Menʼs Sheds to be built
across
Victoria,
with
an
investment more than $2.2 million
through
the
Victorian
Governmentʼs

Melton City Council has made a
commitment in the current budget
of $250,000 towards the project.
The design stage of the project
has been completed and is

construction of the Menʼs Shed
will be completed this year.

Rain Stories to be installed
at Melton Waves
Melton Waves Leisure Centre is set to become
the home of a colourful, text-based artwork,
entitled Rain Stories, by Wollongong based
artist, Greer Taylor.
Late last year, Melton City Council put a call out
for residents to contribute stories about rain to
be used as part of the artwork. As well as
community contributions the artwork also
features rain facts, text and poetry
contributions. The stories have been woven into
a sequence before being cut out into four wall
panels.
City of Melton Mayor, Cr Bob Turner said the
installation of the public artwork was the final
stage of the Melton Waves refurbishment.
“Melton Waves is looking great after its recent
facelift and this piece of artwork is set to
become an iconic and eye-catching piece on
the back wall of the Waves Pool.
“Council is proud to support public art wherever
possible and projects like this demonstrate our
proactive and innovative approach to
supporting public art in the community.”
Artist Greer Taylor said the work would
contribute to creating an environment around
the Wave Pool that connects the pool to the
wider world.
Rain Stories is 13 metres wide and is being
installed between 12 and 18 February 2014.

LYDIA LASSILA AN
INSPIRATION TO
GORTON RESIDENTS
Australian
Winter
Olympic
medallist and Gorton resident
Lydia Lassila has become one of
Australiaʼs
all-time
most
successful
winter
athletes
following
her
acrobatic
performance at the Sochi
Olympic Games.
The Federal Member for Gorton,
Brendan OʼConnor MP, was one
of many Australians who
celebrated
Lydia
Lassilaʼs
success in winning a bronze
medal in the Freestyle Skiing
Womenʼs Aerials event in Sochi.
“Lydia Lassila is one of the many
great
success
stories
of
Melbourneʼs West. Through
incredible
work
and
determination, Lydia has become
just the fifth Australian to win two
Winter Olympic medals in their
career,” he said.
“The all-or-nothing attitude she
displayed in attempting such a
difficult aerial was something all
Australians can be proud of.
“The Gorton community is lucky
to have such an amazing athlete
representing our region and our
country.
“I am sure that Lydiaʼs success
will inspire many other Gorton
residents to pursue their sporting
dreams.”
Ms Lassilaʼs bronze medal
follows her Olympic gold in the
same event at the 2010
Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Homes selling fast at Caesia Gardens
Tom and Lois Byrt made the move to the Caesia Gardens
retirement community to make their lives just that little bit
easier.
The couple moved to the Lend Lease village in December
last year, looking to downsize and feel more safe and
secure.
“We have found it to be a really pleasant place, nice
surroundings and friendly neighbours,” Lois said.
“We were happy right from the first morning; we knew we
had done the right thing for us.”
The Byrts are just two of many retirees who have decided
to call Caesia Gardens home in the past few months.
The village is experiencing an influx of new residents as its
independent living units get snapped up.
.
Page 12
“Situated in a great location with facilities including a
modern Clubhouse, resident vegetable gardens, craft and
hobby room, gymnasium, indoor heated swimming pool
and practice bowling green, Caesia Gardens has
positioned itself as a destination for retirees looking for an
active, vibrant lifestyle,” said Village Manager Jan Smith.
“With a range of recent events and activities including a
street barbecue, rock ʻnʼ roll dancing shows, music
performances and a fete, thereʼs always something to do.
“The recent busy sales period is a reminder to get in
quickly if you are thinking of joining this wonderful
community.”
Caesia Gardens is one of Lend Leaseʼs vibrant retirement
communities located at 48-58 Central Parkway, Caroline
Springs. For more information, please call the village on

Chemistry Sets
Caroline Springs Community Update is now on Facebook so we invite you to log
on and check out what is new in the area that has not been published in the
Community Update.
Chemistry Sets is a square dance
club which has been operating for
14 years from 50 Station Rd, Deer
Park on a weekly basis on a
Saturday night commencing at
8pm. Square dancing is a friendly
and social way to meet new
friends and is very good exercise.
It is fun for all ages as well and is
danced to a variety of music
called by Ralph Weise. The club
was aptly named as it is situated
next to Orica (formerly ICI).
We invite you to log on and Like us on Facebook
(Search for CS Community Update) and help us
spread the news to the community about what is
happening in the local area.
Social skills is a common concern among parents. Sometimes
children can have difficulties in making and keeping friends. They may
be left out of games at lunch, not get invited to other children’s houses
or may even be teased by some children.
Our group programs are child led and play based. Play is a time of interaction, experimentation and
expansion of ideas. It is a time of engagement, emotion, storytelling and socialisation. It is also the
primary way that your child will begin to develop meaningful peer relationships and friendships.
Group numbers vary from 2 – 5 children depending on your child’s individual needs.
Each of our group programs include:
Individual goal setting, parent education sessions (if required) and a formally written report
regarding your child’s progress
Group programs are available during the week or on Saturdays.
For more information, please call 9217 6400.
Page 14
We welcome new dancers if
anyone out there is interested in
trying this wonderful activity. The
cost is $8.00 per person and
$20.00 per family, tea and coffee
is provided and all we ask is a
plate of food to share for supper.

Angelaʼs Echo
Angela's Echo is inspired by one
woman's battle with Motor Neurone

desire to ease the heartache of
individuals and families also affected
by this insidious disease. We are
holding an online fundraising auction
from April 21 to May 11, with all profits raised being donated to
MND Victoria. One Australian dies every day from MND and
there is currently no known cause, treatment, or cure. Your
contribution enables the free supply of equipment to MND
sufferers, unwavering support to these individuals and their
families, and grants towards research endeavours.

It’s Polite Pets Month at Caroline Springs Veterinary Hospital!
The Caroline Springs Veterinary
Hospital, in conjunction with the
Australian
Veterinary
Association(AVA), is holding Polite
Pets Month throughout March. The
idea is to raise awareness about
the
importance
of
animal
behaviour in our community.
The aim is to educate pet owners
about the benefits of reward-based
training and early socialisation in
puppies and kittens. Early
socialisation in both puppies and
kittens under 14 weeks of age sets
the foundation of their behaviour
for the rest of their lives. Training
continues throughout a petʼs life
and as an animals environment
change and learning occurs it is
not
unusual
for
different
behaviours to develop.
We understand that coming to a
Veterinary Hospital can be a
stressful event for both you and
your pet. During Polite Pets Month
we encourage you to come into
the clinic for vet free dog visits.
Your dog can be introduced to
staff, asked to perform a trick such
as “sit”or “shake”, given a treat,
have a weight check and given a
bandana prize to wear.
used when cats are transported in
carriers. This helps reduce stress
when they are away from their
home environment. Encouraging
dogs to visit the clinic regularly for
fun and using feliway spray for
travel to the vets for cats can
reduce stress levels when they
arrive at the vet hospital.
Our separate dog and cat
consultation rooms are designed
to make your pet feel as
comfortable as possible. Adaptil
and feliway diffusers are used
throughout the clinic, calming
music is played in the dog wards
and igloo beds are provided for
cats to hide and feel safe. Our staff
are trained to recognise early
signs of anxiety and we aim to
minimise distress in all our
patients.
Page 24
Our pets need our love,
understanding and consistency
throughout their lives. Continue to
reward and socialise your pet
throughout its life. Recognise and
address
problems
early.
Aggression and anxiety in our
animals can be avoided. We are
here to help make the humananimal bond an enjoyable one!

Our Hospital runs Puppy PreSchool classes and Animal
Behaviour consultations. Puppy
classes are designed for baby
puppies (8-14 weeks of age),
senior puppies (over 16 weeks of
age) and we also run classes for
active adolescents! The courses
are run by our positive reward
qualified dog trainers, Mira and
Max.
This bandana will be sprayed with
a pheromone called adaptil and is
effective for up to 2 hours to calm
your dog. This scent therapy is
animal specific and cats have their
own relaxing pheromone called
feliway.
For cats, come into the clinic and
staff will spray a card with feliway
for you to return home with for your
cat and note how relaxed they
seem for 24 hours. We always
encourage feliway spray to be
and the pet, where problem
behaviour is addressed by our
veterinarian, Dr Marika Ley.
Please contact us for a
questionnaire, that can be
completed at no charge. Dr Marika
will then contact you to organise
an appointment.
The behaviour consultations are a
private consultation with the family
the Caroline Springs Veterinary
Hospital on 03 8390 2266.

CONGRATULATIONS TO CAROLINE
SPRINGS RSL ON OPENING CEREMONY
The Caroline Springs Returned Services
League (RSL) Sub-branch opened their doors
on Friday at The Club in Caroline Springs.
The Federal Member for Gorton, Brendan
OʼConnor MP, spoke at the opening at The Club
in Caroline Springs, saying that it is exciting to
see the RSL expanding and bringing its good
work to the Caroline Springs Community.
“The RSL is a cornerstone of many Australian
communities. I am very pleased and excited to
be at The Club in Caroline Springs to witness
the opening of the Caroline Springs Sub-branch
of the RSL,” he said.
“The RSL does an invaluable service in our
community. They educate Australians about our
proud military history and they assist local
groups and charities in our community.
“Unfortunately, more RSL clubs are closing
around the country, so it is wonderful that the
RSL is expanding in our rapidly growing region.
“I congratulate RSL Sub-branch President, Mr
Peter Burquest, Vice-President Mr Murray
Lewis and everyone involved in the formation
of the sub-branch. I wish them all the best in
their future at The Club in Caroline Springs.”
RSL State President Major General David
McLachlan AO (Rtd) opened the club in front of
approximately 200 supporters.
Is your child ready for kinder?
Melton City Council is hosting a number of sessions
aimed at preparing children for kindergarten, in the
lead up to 2015 kindergarten enrolments opening
next month.
A 2015 Kindergarten Open Day will be held at
participating kindergartens on Wednesday 12 March,
6 – 8pm and is designed for parents and their
children to explore their local kindergarten, meet
teachers, ask questions and get information to help
inform their decision on which kindergarten to enrol
their child.
Parents are also encouraged to come along to a
Parent and Educator Information Session hosted by
Dr Shona Bass. The session will help parents identify
the right time to enrol their child in kindergarten and
how to know if they are ready. The session will be
held on Tuesday 18 March, 6.30pm - 8pm at the
Melton Library auditorium, 31 McKenzie Street,
Melton.
A Toileting Independence Session will be held on
Wednesday 26 March, 6.30pm – 8.30pm at the
Caroline Springs Library, 193 Caroline Springs
Boulevard. The session will cover when and how to
toilet train your child.
Cr Bob Turner, City of Melton Mayor said going to
kindergarten was an important step in a childʼs life.
“Sending your child to kindergarten is a real
milestone in their lives and yours as a parent.
“There has never been a greater emphasis on the
importance of positive early childhood education as
an indicator of success and happiness in later life.
“It is worth making sure your child is prepared for
kindergarten, so I would encourage parents who
wish to enrol their child for the 2015 year to head
along to these sessions.”
More information on these events can be found at
www.melton.vic.gov.au or contact Councilʼs
Kindergarten Central Enrolment Officer on 9747
7200.
Brendan O’Connor MP with RSL State President Major General
David McLachlan AO
Applications for the 2015 kindergarten year will be
available from Wednesday 26 March 2014. More
information will be available soon.

SUPPORTING OVARIAN CANCER RESEARCH
Wednesday 26 February was Teal Ribbon Day
and the Federal Member for Gorton, Brendan
OʼConnor MP, encouraged members of the
Gorton community to purchase a teal ribbon to
support ovarian cancer research.
Mr OʼConnor has welcomed Teal Ribbon Day for
2014, saying that he is proud to support ovarian
cancer research and encourages all Australians
to buy a teal ribbon on 26 February.
1 in 77 Australian women will be diagnosed with
ovarian cancer in their lifetime, with 1,200
diagnoses made every year. Unfortunately, when
most women are diagnosed, their cancer will be
at an advanced stage and more than half of
women diagnosed do not live for five years after
their diagnosis.
“Ovarian cancer touches everyone. Whether itʼs
your mother, sister, daughter, workmate or friend,
many of us have known women who have been
diagnosed with ovarian cancer. With the support
of the Government and the Australian community,
Ovarian Cancer Australia can further their
research to find an early detection test for ovarian
cancer,” he said.
But 95% of women who are diagnosed in the
early stages are alive and well after five years.
Online donations to Ovarian Cancer Australia can
be made at: www.ovariancancer.net.au

Caroline Springs Fire Brigade
If you live directly next to grassland: quickly move one to two streets away from the fire.
If you live close to but not right next to grassland: it's safer to stay where you are as grassfires
are unlikely to spread past the first row of homes.
Don't try to get a closer look at the fire - you'll put yourselves and others in danger. Avoid driving in
a grassfire. It may be smoky and hard to see so traffic jams and accidents are likely, and the roads
need to be kept free for the emergency services.

Car Show to Fight Cancer.
This is our 5th Annual Car Show
helping raise much needed funds
for Peter Mac.
My mum was diagnosed with
stomach cancer 8 years ago. It
was very aggressive and really
shock her up. She was admitted to
Peter Mac where she stayed for 3
months while going through
treatment. The kindness and
support we received by the
doctors and nurses and Peter Mac
was indescribable. They made her
feel like she was at home and
offered us unconditional support.
Unfortunately we lost my mother
on the 25th February 2007.

Having a passion for cars, my wife
and I decided to organise car
shows to help raise money for
Peter Mac as our way of saying
thank you for all they did for us
and my mum while mum was ill.
Our first car show had 60 cars
entered which we were very happy
with.
Over the years its been getting
bigger and bigger, with last year's
show attracting over 200 cars and
20 bikes. So far over the years we
have helped raise over $38,000.
Our target for this car show is to
raise $20,000 and attract 500
cars.
The Car Show will be held at Club
Italia Soccer Club on Furlong rd on
Sunday 23rd March between
10am - 3pm. We will have food
stalls, entertainment for the kids as
well as a variety of stalls for
everyone, as well as raffles and an
auction. A great family day out
while raising money for a worthy
charity. If you would like to donate
items for the auction/raffles or
make a donation please contact

Community Update
Hello Readers,
Welcome to all our new and regular
readers of the Caroline Springs
Community Update.
This month I would like to discuss the on
going issue of vehicle safety. This is a
topic that I have covered numerous times
but our recent intelligence suggests that
we all need to be reminded about this
matter.
There are a number of steps we can all
take to try and reduce the chance of our
vehicles being broken into, stolen or the
number plates stolen.
Many of these crimes are what we refer to
as opportunistic crimes. This means that a
person walks past your car and in clear
sight is something of value. This maybe a
mobile phone, GPS, loose change,
sunglasses, handbag, satchel or perhaps
private mail. If these items are not in view
then there is a chance that your vehicle
may not be broken into.
A further suggestion appears to be the
most obvious but please ensure your
vehicle is always locked. Even if you are
leaving it unattended for a very short time,
paying for petrol, collecting children from
school or running into a friends house.
The shortest time can result in a theft.
I urge the community to access the
Victoria
Police
web
site,
www.police.vic.gov.au. Once at this site
go to the Crime Prevention tab and search
“Residential Crime Prevention Information
Kit” In this document there is a designated
section covering “vehicle safety”.
In this same document it also talks about
securing your number plates. If your car
is parked in the street outside your house,
in your driveway, at a shopping centre or a
train station you are at risk of having
your number plates stolen. These stolen
plates are then used by criminals for the
commission of an offence. This could be
burglaries, petrol drive-offs, armed
robberies or simply using tolled roads
where you receive the bill.
To limit this happening to you can
purchase “one way screws” and replace
the existing screws. These screws can
be fitted with a normal screw driver but
require a special device to remove them.
These screws are available from leading
automotive suppliers such as Repco.
The cost of these items is around the $8
mark.
In respect to these types of crimes the
community is reminded that if they see
something suspicious then take note and
report it. It maybe suspicious vehicle in
your street or a person wandering around
in a car park. Calling 000 will have police
attend to this report or a call to Crime
Stoppers for less urgent matters.
Before finishing up for this month I would
like to invite the community to an event,
Operation Safe Family to be held on
Sunday the 22nd March from 10am –
2pm at Woodgrove Shopping Centre,
Melton. There will loads of activities for
the whole family and an opportunity to
have your child seat correctly fitted,
speak to your local Police and obtain
information on a range of topics including
traffic law and family violence.
A sausage sizzle will also be available
and a visit from the Looney tunes
characters to the shopping centre on the
day.
A reminder to all readers that if anybody
needs to report a matter urgently to the
Police then they should be calling “000”.
Contacting the station directly or sending
an e-mail is not appropriate in this case.
Phone/e-mail messages should NOT be
left for the reporting of crime.
In respect to hoon driving, please be
aware that the community can report
cases to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333
000.
Caroline Springs Police Station is
continuing with operate with some
extended opening hours when and where
staffing permits.
On Tuesday and
Thursday the station will open from
9.00am until 9.00pm and Saturdays from
9.00am to 4.00pm. All other days will be
8.00am to 6.00pm. If for any reason you
may need to attend the Caroline Springs
Police Station, please consider calling
first. Our priority will be to always place a
patrol unit on the road to answer all
emergency calls.
Please be aware that regardless of the
station operating hours we do provide a
24hr police response. Should you need to
attend a Police station please consider
any of the 24hour stations in the area,
Melton, Keilor Downs or Sunshine.
Before I go I am happy to hear from
anyone in the community about a safety
or policing issue they have experienced.
If there is an issue you would like to
discuss with me or explain in future
updates please email my office at
[email protected]
or alternatively feel free to call me on
9361-4700.
Remember to take care of each other and
donʼt forget that community safety is
everyoneʼs responsibility.
Thanks for reading.
