Happy New Year to all supporters of community
literacy! Yes, that’s YOU, whether you are a: current
member, new member, former member, or “wannabe” member. As we enter the second half of our
fiscal year, we have exciting news and a diverse
program schedule.
A dedicated band of current members have been
working full throttle from September through
December to support our mission of promoting and
expanding community literacy programs and making
the library an even more inviting place for expanding
one’s horizons. But the pedal remains pressed down to the floor, not by
one foot exerting all the pressure, but by many exerting what each is able,
keeping our forward momentum.
We’ve had a surge of new memberships! Welcome newbies!! New
members can expect special invitations to our meetings and events. And
Friends invites all new members to follow our monthly meeting minutes to
keep up with business, and to participate in the decision-making process as
we move forward. What is your vision of community literacy? Minutes
can be found on our website http://sherrillsfordfriendsofthelibrary.org/
Are you a former member or a “wanna-be”? We would love to hear from
you. Our fiscal year runs from July 1, 2015 thru June 30, 2016. If you have
simply forgotten to renew for 2015-2016, membership forms can be found
in the library foyer, or just open the attachment in this email and mail it to
the library or drop it off.
I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on Tuesday, January 19,
and at our next event which promotes cultural literacy, a piano recital on
Monday, January 25.
The Sherrills Ford-Terrell Branch Library program brochure is also attached
with this email.

Kawai Digital Piano Arrives!
The Friends of the Sherrills Ford-Terrell Library
presented a state-of-the-art KAWAI CN35 Digital Piano
to our library. The piano was installed in the
community room prior to the December 11th Annual
Tree Lighting/Santa Visit and was first heard that
evening when member Joyce O’Neal accompanied
carols in the lobby. The beautiful rosewood cabinet
has a sliding key cover and the piano is complete with
Librarian Jennifer Patterson taking delivery of the three fully functioning pedals and a padded bench.
new Kawai CN35 Digital Piano from
Mr. Allen R. Wilson of Johnson Piano in Hickory,
Allen R. Wilson of Johnson Piano in Hickory
NC, arranged for the Friends to receive a discount
from the Kawai-USA corporation and Johnson Piano
provided a further discount, making this top-of-the-line institutional instrument
affordable. The piano comes with a full warranty and Johnson Piano, as an authorized
Kawai dealer, is always available for questions and service.
Johnson Piano has been serving patrons in Catawba and surrounding counties since
1922; a visit to their showroom is an experience not to be missed by anyone interested in
keyboards—baby grands, grands, concert grands, and Kawai keyboards suitable for the
beginner to the professional are on view. Playing each one for just ten minutes would
take over eight hours! Mr. Wilson had already delivered five pianos before he arrived at
our library in the afternoon, so there were many other happy “Christmas” recipients!
Joyce O’Neal of Sherrills Ford will present a recital on our new instrument on
January 25, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. We hope that everyone will come out and hear how
electronics and computerization have deleted the drawbacks of a grand piano—frequent
tuning, humidity control, heat control, weight and immobility—without changing the
qualities that pianists love. See page 4 for more about Joyce and the recital.

Martha Nemechek Receives a Comcast Community
Champion of the Year Award
Creates the Friends of the Sherrills Ford-Terrell
Library Children’s Fund
As part of Comcast’s long-term partnership with NASCAR,
Comcast created the awards to honor NASCAR team members
for their outstanding charitable endeavors. The 2015 finalists
include an individual from each of the top-three national
NASCAR series: Martin Truex Jr., driver of the No. 78
Chevrolet SS, for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series; Joey Gase,
Joe & Martha Nemechek at the races with
driver of the No. 52 Ford Mustang, for the NASCAR XFINITY
John Hunter, grandson.
Series; and Martha Nemechek, whose son and grandson, Joe and
John Hunter Nemechek, currently compete in the NASCAR
ranks, for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Martha Nemechek has been a very involved member of the Friends of the Sherrills Ford-Terrell Library for
many years. Most recently, she has been serving as a Board of Director. She has given freely of her time
and her resources to help further our goal to promote community literacy.
One of Martha’s signature contributions has been her continued support of children’s reading programs at
our library. Martha has frequently purchased and donated books requested by the librarian. Additionally,
her generosity has allowed the library to expand its summer
reading programs beyond what was traditionally provided.
As a Board of Director, Martha has used her influence in the
community to promote community literacy with residents
and with other organizations in the area. She has encouraged
joint projects that have benefited the library.
As a result of this award, Martha has established
the Friends of the Sherrills Ford-Terrell Library
Children’s Fund to promote children’s literacy.
Join me in thanking her for the generous
donation!

SFTOL Donates the Kawai CN35 Digital Piano and
Sponsors Inaugural Recital
EVERYONE IS INVITED TO a piano recital by local resident and Friends member Joyce O’Neal, on
Monday, January 25, 2016, 6PM, at the Library. Her recital will include works by Bach, Gershwin,
Chopin, Ravel, Ponce, and Rachmaninoff.
As mentioned above, Friends of the Sherrills Ford-Terrell Library have donated a new, state of the art
piano from Johnson Piano and Organ Exchange, Hickory NC. The KAWAI CN35 Digital Piano
perfectly reproduces the sound and versatility of a standard grand piano, but with the latest technology,
the Kawai can supply 324 different instrument sounds, as well as 12 different rhythmic accents. A few
of the myriad sound combinations will be heard in the upcoming recital.
Mrs. O’Neal holds a bachelor’s degree in Music from Penn State University and a
Master of Liberal Arts degree (history and piano performance) from Queens
University in Charlotte. She has performed recitals in North and South Carolina and
in Pennsylvania, and was the Adult Winner of the first Chautauqua Music
Competition at Erskine College. She has studied with Mme. Cynthia Fok Lawing
(Davidson College), Dr. Cindy L. Goodloe (Clemson University), and Dr. John
Salmon (UNC-Greensboro).
A reception will follow the performance.
Santa Claus visits on December 11th
A record number of children came to our SFTFOL
sponsored Tree Lighting and Santa Visit at the library this
year! Many thanks go to new member Sylvia Nelson for
chairing the Tree Lighting (research, purchasing, and with
her husband John Nelson, the installation. John and
Sylvia scoured the region in search of permanent outside
decorations at minimal expense, and then they installed a
Charlie Brown display that lit up the night. (The Friends
cheerfully voted them an extra amount to snap up bargains
in the after-Christmas sales.) Also hats off to Pat and Flo Hollands for coordinating Santa's arrival on a SFT
Fire and Rescue Truck and getting the treats.
The library echoed with carols as a record number of children
eagerly anticipated Santa’s arrival on the firetruck! The first
Annual Tree Lighting and Santa Visit in our new facility was a
huge hit and adults enjoyed it as much as the little ones. In the
foyer, Vice-president Joanie Gardner led the singing with Joyce
O’Neal at the new piano.“A Charlie Brown Christmas” was the
theme as the tree, newly planted by the county, is still small and
will need a few more years’ growth to impress. Staff-member Ede
Murray-Escuder created a delightful songbook for the carolers with
full-color illustrations taken from Charles Schultz’s Peanuts comic.
