Dear Sagamore Hills Students and Parents,
Welcome to Sagamore Hills!
On behalf of the entire Sagamore Hills School Staff, I welcome you to the
2008-2009 school year. We look forward to working with you to ensure that you
have a wonderful and academically successful school year. Our mission is to
establish a solid foundation for a lifetime of learning. We strive to provide
all children, regardless of their individual needs, with an education which
will enable them to reach their fullest potential. Sagamore Hills will foster
a learning environment which includes innovative and engaging teaching
strategies and technology. In addition, we support a school environment where
students develop respect for themselves and others. To ensure that each
student experiences success, the education process at Sagamore Hills will seek
to involve parents, teachers, and the community working together.
As students, it is very important that you are active learners and active
participants in school activities. As parents, your involvement at Sagamore
Hills is critical to your child’s success. It is essential that you play an
active role in your child’s education. In this handbook is valuable
information to assist you with your involvement at Sagamore Hills. You will
find a calendar of school events for the 2008-2009 school year to assist you
in planning to attend the many school functions scheduled for this year. You
will also find additional information in this handbook about school procedures
and programs. I encourage students and parents to review this handbook
together.
I look forward to seeing all Sagamore Hills parents at Curriculum Night,
August 26th , and throughout the school year as we work together to provide the
best learning environment for all Sagamore Hills students.
Sincerely,
Julie Martin, Principal

Introduction to Our School:
Mission
The mission of Sagamore Hills Elementary is to establish a solid foundation for a lifetime of learning.
We believe that:
* All students can learn, achieve and succeed in different ways.
* Students learn best when actively engaged in the learning process.
* Teachers, parents, and the community share the responsibility for the support of the school’s
mission.
* Each student is a valued individual with unique physical, social, emotional, and intellectual
needs.
History
Sagamore Hills Elementary School opened in January 1961, to relieve crowded conditions in W. D.
Thomson, Oak Grove and Kittredge Schools. By January 1963, nearly eight hundred students were
enrolled in grades 1 through 7 with nearly 30 faculty and staff members.
During the summer of 1963, ten additional classrooms were added to the building; six were added to the
back and four to the front of the school. By the 1965-66 school year Sagamore Hills was overcrowded
with over 1000 students.
By fall of 1967, two new schools opened in the vicinity to relieve the crowded conditions at Sagamore
Hills, bringing enrollment down to just below 800, a manageable size. Throughout the 70’s enrollment
declined with an increase during the 80’s, to a stabilized 525 students during the 90’s.
Sagamore Hills Elementary School has served the community for over 40 years and today has a culturally
diverse student body, which includes pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and grades 1-5 housing
approximately 450 students. Our school promotes a positive learning environment and encourages
students to strive toward their potential in intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and creative
development. Five of our classes are comprised of mildly and moderately handicapped students from our
neighborhood and from nearby schools.
School Goals
Sagamore Hills strives to provide a caring and secure environment, to involve the total community in the
education of children, and to encourage each child to set and achieve his or her own academic goals. Our
focus for the coming year will continue to be writing and mathematics with a continual emphasis on
reading, organizational skills and attendance. Our goal is that all students will demonstrate significant
progress in each academic subject and leave with the skills, knowledge, character, work ethic and habits
necessary to ensure success as they continue their education.
With its cultural diversity and varying level of student needs, Sagamore Hills utilizes several programs
and evaluation tools to determine the best education for each student. Programs offered for the students
include Discovery, Early Intervention Program Reading (EIP Reading), English to Speakers of Other
Languages (ESOL), Spanish, Pre-K Special Education (PKSE), Moderately Intellectually Disabled
(MOID), and Interrelated Resource Services.

To attend to the physical and creative needs of the students, Sagamore Hills is completely handicapped
accessible, offers free/reduced breakfasts and lunches, and employs physical education, music, Spanish
and art teachers. In addition, there is a high level of parental involvement at Sagamore Hills through and
with the PTA.
Unique Assets
Our Spanish class, available two and a half days a week, has also served to increase students’
understanding of grammar and vocabulary.
“Book buddies” offers a student in grades K and 3, 1 and 4, and 2 and 5; supportive relationships
based on reading and writing together that carry over into other aspects of the school day.
Our special education students take art, music, physical education and other academic classes in
inclusion settings as appropriate, creating an appreciation among all students for the special
attributes of each child.
A winter and spring concert, a musical play or dramatic performance, and a talent show occur
every year that showcases our strong music program and commitment to the performing arts.
The Sagamore Hills Art program and annual Art Show also enriches each student’s education and
showcases his or her talent.
Gifted students have an opportunity to experience challenging coursework and stimulating
projects through the Discovery Program.
An outdoor classroom, butterfly garden, goldfish pond, numerous flower and herb beds, and class
vegetable gardens enhance school grounds.
Physical fitness is emphasized with PE five times a week, recess as time permits , fitness events
such as the Turkey Trot, Jump for Heart, Field Day and an after school running club as well as
our encouragement of walking to school on the 'International Walk to School' day and throughout
the year.
A commitment to learning about other cultures is reinforced through an annual International
Week in which each class focuses on a particular country culminating in a nighttime Festival with
booths representing each country’s food, geography and cultural offerings.
A Junior Great Books program is available to students in Grades 1st – 5th. This unique program is
facilitated by parent volunteers and promotes the development of critical thinking and discussion.

Awards and Recognitions
Numerous academic competitions and events are held locally including a Vocabulary Bee,
Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, Career Week, International Week, Math Tournament, Chess Club
and various other contests.
Students also compete in the Academic Bowl, the Science Olympiad, Young Inventor, the Helen
Ruffin Reading Bowl, and 4-H district and state presentations. Students’ works of art are
consistently state qualifiers for the PTA Reflections competition and some have won at the state
level.
For several years a math tournament for local elementary schools has been hosted by Sagamore
Hills with over 300 students competing from more than 15 nearby schools.
Sagamore Hills celebrates accomplishments in the Accelerated Reader program by offering
students opportunities to participate in a special reading carnival. Our students read an average of
60 books each and took tests on these books to accumulate over 27,500 points.
Our PTA works hard throughout the year to coordinate numerous events including book fairs, AR
Celebration Carnival, school ground clean-ups, family dinners, ongoing support of our Media
Center and Science Lab, the installation of new recreational equipment, multipurpose exercise
court and trail, and of course, well-attended PTA meetings.
Many parents work hard in classrooms and the Media Center, as well as in creating the yearbook,
organizing school pictures, and coordinating cultural arts events. In the spring we recognize more
than two hundred parents and community members who, together, contribute thousands of
volunteer hours to our school.
Award Ceremonies are conducted each semester to recognize each student’s achievements.
Sagamore Hills students exceed county and state averages on all standardized testing.
Our school 4-H Club, led by Ms. Nancy Briggs, regularly receives a 4-H banner recognizing our
club as one of the top clubs in DeKalb County. Many of our students win 1st place awards at the
local and district 4-H competition for speaking.

Classroom Assignment
In May of each year, currently enrolled students receive teacher assignments for the upcoming academic
year. Consideration is taken to group students where they might work best academically, behaviorally and
socially. The Assistant Principal for Instruction, Principal, Counselor, teachers and parents give input.
Achievement test scores, attendance, behavior and demographic information are also referenced. Once the
class roster is completed, students have an opportunity to meet with their prospective teacher before
summer break. New students are assigned to classes as enrollment occurs.
A single homeroom teacher primarily instructs students in Pre-K through 3rd grade. In 4th and 5th grades,
students may have a different teacher for each subject.
School-wide specialized teachers educate students weekly on subjects such as art, music, PE, Spanish and
reading. Flexible grouping for math and reading and for other core subjects at higher grade levels help
teachers track student progress and provide appropriate instruction at different levels within a given class.
Curriculum Night
A Curriculum Night is scheduled early in the school year for all parents to learn what their children are
expected to learn. This gives the teacher time to orient parents about discipline and grading procedures,
rules of the school, to go over special events, and to review curriculum materials. This is not a time for
individual student conferences, which should be scheduled for another meeting.

along with Sagamore Hills parents and PTA board
members who have been involved with the school
in previous years will also be present. This is a
great way to meet some new people, ask questions
and enjoy refreshment. Please take time to join us.
Nuevo Café de la Familia
En el principio de cada año académico nosotros
recibimos un café tan los padres de nuevos
estudiantes pueden conseguir para saber el uno al

the upcoming fall semester.

DeKalb County’s computerized call system will notify parents when students are absent. Parents need not
respond to the call; this is just an informative messaging system. This system also allows for broadcast
calling which may be enabled to communicate with parents on particular events or situations specific to
Sagamore Hills.
Academic Calendar
For your convenience the academic calendar for this school year is in the Appendices of this handbook.
You may want to tear it out and place it near your family calendar for easy reference.

If you are interested in after school care for your child, please contact someone in the front office or
inquire about the after school program during fall registration or in the cafeteria or media center after
school.
Attendance
Recognizing that good attendance helps children to
be successful in school, reduces stress for children,
families, and teachers, and is a vital habit for
successful participation in the work force, the
following attendance policies are followed during
the school year:
Excused absences for children are illness, illness or
death in the family, religious holidays and when
weather makes attendance hazardous. These
absences are only excused when a parent provides a
signed note. A doctor’s note may be required for
any absence of five (5) days or longer for it to be
excused.
Unexcused absences include any absence for which
a parent-signed note is not provided and include
absences such as vacation, travel with parent, “take
your daughter to work day”, etc. If the absence is
unexcused, the teacher may, but is not required to
give a make up test or provide any makeup
assignments.
Students are tardy if they step into the classroom
after the 8:00 a.m. bell has rung. They must have a
tardy pass. Parents may not accompany tardy
students to class.
Students may not leave class to check out unless
the office calls for them or a parent comes to the
classroom with a checkout pass signed by someone
in the office.
Teachers are required to call parents by the 3rd day
of each absence and to tell the office if the absence
reaches 5 days. Between 6 and 9pm, an automated
caller system calls the home number of all absent
students for that day.
Consequences for students with excessive
unexcused absences or tardiness will include after
school detention, parent conferences, in-school
suspension (ISS), home visits, and referral to the
school social worker.
Tardiness, check-ins and check-outs not only
impact the student but also interrupt the classroom
work environment. Understanding that medical

Yearbook/Pictures
Individual pictures of each child are usually taken in September. These individual packets can be
purchased. During April group pictures of each class are taken and are available for purchase.
Each year a PTA committee produces a yearbook. All students enrolled at Sagamore Hills during the 1st
semester have a picture taken for the yearbook. Parents are given the opportunity to help with the
production of the yearbook and/or to purchase advertising to defray some of the costs. Please contact the
yearbook committee chair if you can offer assistance.
The Golden Rules:
Birthdays/Parties
We are limited to two classroom parties each year. They will be held the last day before the winter
holidays and on Valentine’s Day. Room parents work with the homeroom teacher to coordinate
refreshments and events.
Birthdays will be celebrated with the announcement of the student’s name and a birthday pencil. Parents
of birthday students are invited to contribute a book to the media center in the child’s name. Birthday
treats will not be permitted.
Bus & Bus Behavior
We encourage all students with access to a school bus to take advantage of it.
Several regular and special buses serve Sagamore Hills students. Bus routes are
available at registration or in the main office and are shown in the appendices of
this handbook. You can also check on the transportation page of the DeKalb
website. The first time a child rides a bus should be in the morning so that the
driver can meet the child and know where to drop him/her off.
Behavior on these buses must be as good as or better than classroom behavior for
the safety of all the riders and to continue the privilege of being a bus rider. Each driver reviews the rules
with the students and works hard to get students to and from school safely each day. Consequences for
poor bus behavior can include parent contact, a bus work detail, ISS (In School Suspension), or
suspension of bus riding privileges.

Code of Student Conduct
The handbook published by the DeKalb County School System outlines the discipline program that has
been established to ensure safety and fairness to all students. To perform as a responsible member of the
DeKalb student body, students will need to be familiar with it. Please refer to the DeKalb County web site
for a copy of the Code of Conduct,
www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/adminservices/student/relations/codeofconduct.pdf
Discipline
Appropriate behavior is expected of all of our students at all times. Teachers handle most of their own
discipline concerns through private meetings with students, parent contacts, isolation of disruptive
students, and other appropriate consequences. When the behavior of a student reaches the level where
administrative support is needed, the student is referred to the Principal or Assistant Principal.
Consequences in addition to the ones listed above may include some form of restitution, parent-supported
work details, ISS (In-School Suspension), and in severe cases, out of school suspension. Please review the
discipline handbook issued in the first week of school with your child and throughout the school year for
additional information.
Fire & Tornado Drills
Fire drills are conducted once a month. Tornado and intruder alert drills are conducted typically twice a
year. During a drill students are expected to follow ALL teacher directions and walk without talking.
Lost & Found
Lost coats, book bags, and other large items are available to be claimed in the cafeteria on the wall near
the kitchen. Smaller items such as watches, glasses, or money may be claimed in the front office. Placing
the child’s name on coats, book bags and lunches is a tremendous help. Many coats go unclaimed every
year and are donated to charity. Please be sure to check these two locations if you have a lost article.
Prohibited Items
Electronic games, Gameboys, cassette players, I-Pods, MP3 players, CD players, trading cards, playing
cards and other toys should not be brought to school and will be taken from the students. Gum and candy
are not allowed in school or on the buses with the exception of treats that are distributed by teachers and
consumed in that teacher’s classroom.
Soiled Clothing
Normally parents will not be called if a child requires a change of clothes. We will issue students clean
clothes to wear for the remainder of the day. Parents are asked to wash and return the clothes within two
school days. Parents of Pre-K students may be asked to keep extra underclothes or extra clothes in their
child’s classroom.
School Pond
The school pond is located is located on the side of the school near the cafeteria. Please do not get in the
pond, throw anything in the pond, or feed the fish. Walking on the rocks around the pond will loosen
them, so please enjoy the pond from the ground. Help us keep this area safe, clean and healthy.

Student Phone Calls
In order to keep the phone free for incoming calls and important outgoing calls, students
may NOT use the front office telephone OR classroom phones to call parents for forgotten
books, money, lunches, permission slips, glasses, musical instruments, to go home with a
friend, or for anything else that should have been taken care of before coming to school.
Our Academic Program:
A rigorous academic program is offered at Sagamore Hills. Our program maintains a heavy focus on
phonics especially in the earliest years. An increased emphasis on writing in all subject areas is evident
and standardized writing test scores have risen, and exceed county and state scores. For the 2008-2009
school year, we will implement and assess the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) in all content areas;
Reading, English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. You can view the GPS
online at www.georgiastandards.org. Parents will also receive the curriculum standards for each grade
level in a course syllabus. We are fortunate to be able to offer a full instructional and fine arts program
with teachers in music, art, instrumental music (grades 4 and 5 only), Spanish and physical education.
Several special services for students are offered at Sagamore Hills. These include the Early Intervention
Program (EIP) offered to students that fall below grade level in reading, speech and language, ESOL (for
students learning English) and gifted instruction (Discovery). Students may qualify for these through the
use of standardized test scores. A full time Inter-related Resource teacher provides services for children
with special learning or behavioral needs. Multiple special education classes are available for qualifying
students with inclusion and involvement with regular classrooms where appropriate. Speech, physical and
occupational therapists provide services and a visiting psychologist is available for additional
assessments.
Accelerated Math
Accelerated Math is a software program available to 4th and 5th grade students where advanced math
problems and concepts challenge their mathematical thinking. Each grade uses practice and test sheets for
different concepts appropriate for that grade level. Classroom scanners read students completed answer
sheets and score individual performance.

Accelerated Reading
Accelerated Reader, or AR for short, is a program
to assess student comprehension of a specific book.
Sagamore Hills strongly emphasizes this program
not only to encourage reading but also to assist
staff in recognizing reading or comprehension
issues at the earliest stages. Books in our Media
Center or library that have an orange dot with the
letters “AR” on their spines are part of Accelerated
Reader program.
Once a student has read an “AR” book, they take a
test using the Accelerated Reader program that can
be activated from almost any computer in our
school. The student logs on by grade and name to
select the book. Multiple-choice questions are
answered and the test is scored. Students earn
points based on the length and difficulty of the
book AND the percentage of questions answered
correctly on the comprehension test. Students who
score below 60% do not earn any credit AND only
one attempt per book is allowed. Taking a test for
another student is a discipline offense.
A complete grade level AR list and instructions on
how to administer an AR test can be found in the
Media Center and on the Sagamore Hills website.
Point goals per grade, per semester are as follows:
Kindergarten - 5 pts
1st Grade - 10 pts
2nd Grade - 20 pts
3rd Grade - 30pts
4th Grade - 40 pts
5th Grade - 50 pts
Students may also write new tests for book not
currently marked as AR books. Depending on
book length and complexity, the student composes
a test of five or ten questions providing the correct
answer and 3 incorrect answers for each question.
The Media Center Specialist will add the test to the
AR system. The test designer (student) then takes
the test and receives the points. The new test is
also available to other students. See the Media
Center Specialist for details.
Students who met their point goals during the
school year scored an average of two years above

Book Buddies
In order to promote a shared appreciation of reading and writing at Sagamore Hills, older students are
paired with younger students and meet several times a month to read or write together. In addition to
promoting reading among students, these pairings have worked to establish strong bonds across grade
levels between students. Students will generally be paired as follows: 2nd grade with 5th grade, 1st grade
with 4th grade, and Kindergarten with 3rd grade.

Computer Lab
A variety of technology is available for students to use in the classroom with a mobile
Computer Lab and Media Center. Our mobile computer lab houses 21 computers for
weekly whole class instruction. Students use programs to remediate weaknesses, for
creative problem solving, for word processing, and for creating presentations. Internet
usage, with teacher supervision, is encouraged particularly in the upper grades. A DeKalb
technology fair is open to all students. Students who misuse the computers or
deliberately visit inappropriate web sites are guilty of a discipline offense and may lose
their computer privileges.
Counseling
Our counselor coordinates the incorporation of the character education instruction into the regular
"Learning to Live, Work, Grow" curriculum as directed by the Georgia Legislature and the State Board of
Education. Twenty-seven character traits were identified such as School Pride, Self-respect, Respect for
Others, Cooperation, Tolerance, Honesty, Perseverance, Courtesy, and Diligence. Each year, nine traits
are selected with one being the focus each month. Objectives are reached by providing bi-weekly
counselor guidance programs.
Group and individual counseling is provided as necessary. Parents who need extra help are given referral
to community resources where they may satisfy clothing, food, health, transportation and other needs.
Teachers or parents may also refer children to our Student Support Team (SST) for additional
instructional strategies and assistance for students. SST is led by the school counselor and other school
system personnel as appropriate. Regular progress reviews for SST students are completed to determine
how best to serve the needs of the child. Contact your child’s teacher or the school counselor for
additional information
Cultural Arts
The PTA works to enhance student exposure to multicultural experiences and to enrich arts education.
Performers from many artistic disciplines expose students to a variety of performing and creative arts. In
the past, students have participated in hands-on work with a weaver and visual artist to create permanent
works displayed in our school, a puppeteer and musical dance troupe brought folk tales to life, and an
operatic troupe introduced a new musical genre to the students. This year plans are being made to offer
each student at least one cultural arts field trip during the school year.
Discovery Program
The Discovery Program, which is part of DeKalb County’s Program for the Gifted, is for elementary
students. The overall objective of the Discovery Program is to supplement content areas and provide
enrichment opportunities for qualified students that extend beyond the regular classroom setting. Students
that are eligible for this program participate in school learning activities for at least 225 minutes per week.
The Discovery teacher, to determine eligibility for the program, reviews COGAT, ITBS and Renzulli
scores of each child. Qualifying scores in 3 of 4 areas (mental ability, achievement, creativity and
motivation) are required for program entry.
The Discovery teacher may also teach segments in regular classrooms on a needs/scheduling availability
basis.

Drama / Musical Production
Each spring the 4th and 5th grade students perform in a stage production. Two performances are offered –
an adult only dinner theater and a general performance. Past productions have included The Velveteen
Rabbit, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Alice through the Looking Glass.
Field Trips
Scheduled trips are an important part of the curriculum. Our students frequently
visit the Fernbank Science Center as well as many other sites selected by
teachers. The PTA has been partially funding a cultural arts trip for each grade
level. All field trips require a signed permission slip, and most require a
nominal fee. No student will be excluded from a trip due to an inability to pay;
however, if enough paying students cannot make a trip, the trip will be canceled.
Parents
may request financial assistance from the principal. Students unable to pay may be asked to assist
teachers or custodians outside the normal school day as their contribution towards the cost of the trip.
Sagamore Hills students in 4th and 5th grades have participated in overnight trips to places such as Rock
Eagle and Jekyll Island. The costs of these trips have been approximately $125 and $200 per student,
respectively.
Homework
Los Deberes
Homework is an integral and important part of the
learning and achievement for all students. In the
primary grades, homework may simply be reading
to an adult or being read to for 15-30 minutes. As
the student becomes a more independent learner,
homework activities are designed to reinforce the
daily class lessons and to provide students with an
opportunity to independently extend what they
have learned. If a child is going to be out with an
excused absence for more than one day, please
contact your child’s teacher early in the day to get
class and homework assignments.
International Week & Night
Each spring classes select a country to intensely study for a week or more. The
geography, history, cultural identity and customs, plant/animal life and economy are
examined as each country’s flag decorates the classroom doorway. The week of learning
and understanding culminates in a family evening event. Each class sponsors an exhibit
of “their” country showcasing items such as typical food, traditional costume and
localized paraphernalia. This tradition of fun features performances by dance, music
and martial arts groups.

Junior Great Books
This national program utilizes trained teachers and volunteers to facilitate discussion in the
classroom about classic literature. Supplemental workbooks to encourage critical thinking,
creative writing and literature analysis accompany grade level appropriate compilations of
literature and poetry. This year, the program will be offered to all children in First through 5th
grades.
Math Fact Mountains
To learn their math facts, students are encouraged to participate in the Math Fact Mountain
climb. The trek takes them through seven sets of Math Facts (from Sagamore Hills to Mount
Everest). The tests are timed and can be graded by any adult. The tests and mountain maps are
located outside the cafeteria and can be found on the school website.
Math Superstars
Math Superstars, sponsored by the PTA, is a weekly math problem-solving worksheet for which
students are recognized for their efforts and participation. Parents are invited to help their child
with this activity and to offer their assistance with grading and recording the work of other
students. Completed worksheets may be turned into homeroom teachers or placed in the
collection box, sectioned off by class, kept next to bulletin board on the cafeteria hall. Students
who complete 80% of the sheets earn recognition at the end of each semester.

achievement through personal outreach. Your child may be assigned a mentor. Their mentor is a suitable
model who takes an active interest in the life of the student and is committed to serving as a guide, friend,
counselor, and coach. Mentors agree to spend at least 30 minutes a week with their student. These
sessions are held at the school during the regular school day.
Reading Specialist
Sagamore Hills’ Reading Specialist works with all of our classroom teachers to determine the reading
ability and appropriate placement for each new child. In addition to teaching reading groups, the Reading
Specialist is a resource person for teachers in the areas of reading and language arts.

Reflections
This enrichment program, sponsored by the National PTA, encourages artistic creativity. Based on a
designated theme (such as “Wow” the 2008-2009 theme), students can write stories or songs, compile
photographic essays or create other artistic offerings for local, state and national competition.
SciQuest
Sagamore Hills sponsors a weeklong day camp program staffed by Sagamore Hills teachers at the
beginning of summer break. SciQuest is open to 3rd – 5th graders, and Junior SciQuest is for K – 2nd
graders. The day camps annual themes have included environmental science, electricity, chemistry and
pond ecology. The Junior campers complete daily activities with a day long field trip, while the Senior
campers’ week includes an overnight excursion. Applications and tuition deposits are completed during
March for these very popular, fun, and educational camps.
Special Education
Sagamore Hills’ MOID (Moderately Intellectually Disabled) classes are separated by age. Classes
concentrate on teaching the children academic skills as well as life skills, such as handling money,
ordering meals and personal care. They not only participate in the physical education at Sagamore Hills,
but also work on Special Olympic events such as bowling and swimming. The older class members have
a community trip once a week to practice the skills they have acquired.
Sponsored Reading Programs
Many merchants offer rewarded reading programs appropriate for our students. The PizzaHut BookIt!
Program requires a monthly book goal, whereby upon teacher approval the student receives a coupon for
a free children’s pizza good at Pizza Hut. The Six Flags 600 Minutes program encourages students to
track and read for 600 minutes within a 6-week period. Upon completion a coupon for a free child’s
admission to Six Flags is issued.
Talent Show
The Showcase of Stars invites all students to try out for this talent show held each Fall.
No child will be denied participation but the director may modify the act, suggest
changes or combine acts. Practices are formally held twice a week immediately after
school for several weeks between the September tryouts and the performance. Fifth
graders have the opportunity to try out for emcee positions. There is one evening
performance and one during the day that really showcases our young stars!

Faculty and Staff:
Sagamore Hills benefits from a teaching staff that has a very diverse background with
regards to education, experience and expertise. Most of our teachers have taught in
other schools or in other grade levels and bring this experience to benefit all of our
students.
Paraprofessionals assist certified teachers in all special education classrooms, Kindergarten and
Pre-K. Sagamore Hills frequently participates in the training of student teachers.
The Sagamore Hills Elementary School staff has over 500 years of teaching experience.
Communications:
Bad Weather
School closings are announced on WSB 750 AM and all major radio and television stations beginning at
6:00 a.m. You can dial 678-676-1200 to hear the School Closing Recording.
Calendar
The PTA Newsletter, published the last week of each month, is included in each child’s weekly care
packet. A calendar of upcoming events is published there in addition to the official PTA and DeKalb
County schedule. A large dry erase board outside of the cafeteria by the school store also lists monthly
school activities. A PTA bulletin board in the front lobby and the Alderbrook Road marquee also
announce upcoming events.

Care Packets
Every Thursday a courier folder will be sent home. Teachers or parent volunteers stuff
the folders with items accumulated throughout the week as distributed by school staff,
important administrative notes, PTA news, and supplemented with each teacher’s own
communicative information. Please take the time that night to review the packet and return
it the
next day. Return completed items with payments as necessary in your child's homework folder or
planner.
This is another communication tool provided for all students by the PTA.
Conferences
It is expected that each child’s parents and teachers meet twice a year. Conferences may be scheduled by
writing a note in their Student Planner, by e-mailing the teacher, or by leaving a phone message. Four
times a year on Sept. 30, Nov. 13, March 5 and April 23, two-hour blocks of time are set aside for after
school conferences from 4:00-6:00 p.m. If a concern arises, please attempt to work with your child’s
teacher before contacting an administrator. Understand that even regularly speaking with the teacher for a
minute or two before school cannot take the place of an in-depth conference.
An Open House/Curriculum night is scheduled early in the school year to allow parents to meet teachers,
find out about expectations of students, and get an overview of the texts and curriculum used in each
class.
E-mail, Phone System & Numbers
Sagamore Hills’ Main Office:
678-874-7502
To assist in parent/teacher communications, each teacher has a non-ringing phone in the classroom. This
phone provides teachers with a separate number and voice mail options for better communications.
Teachers have limited time to access these classroom phones during academic instructional hours, so if a
critical message needs immediate teacher notification, PLEASE contact the main office.
Another excellent way to communicate with faculty and staff at Sagamore Hills is through e-mail. Most
faculty have and use e-mail. The address is typically first name, initial, last name followed with
@fc.dekalb.k12.ga.us. This information can be found at Sagamore Hills’ web site
www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/~sagamore
The Sagamore Hills PTA issues a weekly “Wildcat Update” via email. It is an excellent way to stay in
touch with what is happening at the school and to be reminded of upcoming events. To place your name
on the email list, send an email to [email protected] . Your email address will not be
shared with anyone else and used only for the PTA email.
Handbook
This handbook contains an immense amount of information and tries to answer questions that might arise
during the year. Please bear in mind that things do change, so there may be a few updates or
modifications to this handbook before the next one is produced.

Marquee/ Outdoor Sign
The sign along Alderbrook Road in front of the school -- known as the marquee or outdoor message board
-- reminds the community about upcoming events. PLEASE look at both sides since the messages may
be different during busy periods.
Newsletter
The Sagamore Hills PTA Newsletter is distributed the last week of each month. Look for
this newsletter in the Care Packets or visit our web site for current and past newsletters.
Our newsletter contains a potpourri of information including the deadlines for upcoming
newsletters. We welcome articles from faculty, staff, parents and students. Articles can
be submitted by e-mail to our principal or the PTA newsletter chairperson. Contact
information is located in the appendices.
School Directory
Each year a PTA committee develops a school directory. The directory provides a listing of students by
class along with personal information such as home address, telephone, parent names and e-mail
addresses. This is a way for friends and parents to contact one another for social, academic or other school
purposes. Listing in this directory is optional, but promotes communication throughout the Sagamore
Hills community.
Student Planner
To assist our students in grades 1-5, a Student Planner/Agenda Book is available for each child. This
spiral bound book and calendar is distributed when classes begin, containing information for use within
the class as well as communicating with home. While the PTA pays for these planners to be available
during the first week of school, they request that each student purchase their own. A synopsis of this
handbook is found in the front of each Student Planner.
The Student Planner is $12; in the event that a student loses it, a replacement may be purchased. For all
students a heavy-duty plastic communications folder is provided.
Website
Our school website is www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/~sagamore/ with Sagamore Hills Elementary information,
links to PTA, DeKalb County and other valuable information The PTA also maintains a website with
important information on the upcoming events and how you can be involved. Visit it at

Volunteer & Fundraiser Opportunities:
Sagamore Hills has lots of projects that enrich our school and children. Some projects are quite colossal;
taking a team of parents, faculty, and students, but some can take as little as 10 minutes. All the volunteer
and fundraising items below are fairly simple to do and every parent is strongly encouraged to participate
in at least one volunteer activity during the school year.
Classroom
Teachers invariably need extra hands. Whether to help with a special project, read a story, put up room
displays, stuff Care Packets or assist during a field trip, parents, family and relatives are always welcome.
Contact your teacher to see how you can help.

Annual School Wide Functions
Throughout the year countless events take place. Sagamore Hills covers the gamut when it comes to
activities for students, parents, grandparents, and faculty alike. Even though each school wide function
has a particular focus and benefit, this time is a wonderful way to get to know other children and parents
as well as enriching your knowledge of your child’s school community. Each of these events date and
time can be found on the School Calendar. Volunteers are always welcome. Committee chairs with
contact information for this school year can be found in the Appendices.
Clubs & Organizations
Our school is fortunate to have many teachers and parents who are willing to give their extra time to assist
with clubs and activities that make for a well-rounded school. In addition to active scouting programs for
boys and girls the following organizations are offered for students:
Beta Club directed by 5th grade teachers during the second semester, recognizes the best efforts of
our 5th graders and involves the students in service projects.
4-H Club directed by Ms. Nancy Briggs, invites 4th and 5th graders to meet regularly to plan
activities and participate in competitions through the state 4-H program. Meetings are usually
the first and third Thursdays of the month.
Safety Patrols, directed by Ms. Lindsay Phillips, are selected in April of their 4th grade year
based on grades and behavior. Patrols serve our school by promoting school safety at the
beginning and end of each day until May of their 5th grade year.
Chess Club will be offered as a part of the After School Academy.
Running Club is parent sponsored and meets Monday afternoons in the Spring to help students,

Community Involvement:
Adopters
Organizations who have adopted our school include the LaVista Lions Club, Kroger at Toco Hills,
Shorty’s, Pike’s, Publix at Toco Hills, Bruster’s at Toco Hills and Chick-fil-A at the corner of North
Druid Hills and Briarcliff Rd. Our adopters have supported our students and teachers by contributing
many different resources. We reciprocate with artwork, special performances, and by patronizing their
businesses. We encourage our families to do so as well.
Emory LaVista Parent Council
The Emory LaVista Parent Council was formed to provide a forum for communication and to promote
educational opportunities for our children. All schools in the Emory LaVista corridor including Briar
Vista, Briarlake, Evansdale, Fernbank, Hawthorne, Henderson Mill, Laurel Ridge, McClendon, Medlock,
Oak Grove, Pleasantdale, Sagamore Hills Elementary Schools, Henderson and Shamrock Middle Schools
and Druid Hills and Lakeside High Schools are represented on the Council. The topics covered each
month vary and locations of meetings rotate through the member schools. All interested parents are
encouraged to attend the monthly meetings for current information about issues pertaining to DeKalb
County schools.
School Council
Established by the State Legislature in 2000, the School Council operates as an advisory board for the
principal. The council is comprised of six parents, two teachers and two area businesspeople. Each
member is asked to serve a two-year term. Please contact the principal or any of the members of the
school council with any issues or concerns relating to the school. The School Council will meet on the
third Thursday of each school month at 4:30 in the conference room. Please see the Appendices for a list
of current School Council Members.
PTA
The Sagamore Hills PTA (Parent Teacher Association) is a key component in the success of our school.
With the financial support and time commitments of many parents, the PTA has worked to provide
building and grounds improvements, extra teachers for art and Spanish, recognition for students and staff,
cultural arts programs and many more wonderful extras. Numerous committee chairs support these
officers and more are needed. Please contact one of these PTA officers to offer your time and talents.
Please see the Appendices for a list of current PTA Officers.
The PTA Board Members hold a working session once a month. See the school calendar for exact dates
and times. All parents are invited and actively encouraged to attend to find out what is happening and
become involved in the decision-making and in planning Sagamore Hills’ future.
General informational PTA meetings are held 6 or more times a year and are usually held around a school
event or function, such as the Art Festival or Holiday Program. Parents are encouraged to join the PTA
and volunteer to show support for our school.
