SCHOOL MATTERS
END OF TERM ARRANGEMENTS
Last day of term is Friday 18 December.
Please note that as in previous years, school
will finish a little earlier than usual, at
2.00pm (the Shardlow bus has been booked).
Please note that students return to school on
Monday 4 January.
We would like to wish you all a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year.
NOTIFICATION OF SCHOOL CLOSURES
In the unlikely event of school closure due to
bad weather, we would like to let you know
the ways in which we will inform you. Our
primary way of communication will be via the
school website, so please check this regularly.
Although we will text and email parents, there
have been issues in the past with the length of
time it has taken for these messages to be
delivered, due to the large amount of traffic
on mobile networks. Please ensure the school
is informed of any changes to mobile numbers
and email addresses. DCC have a website that
will publish all schools that are closed:

Due to recent issues with our current provider,
SLG (Sims Learning Gateway), we have been
trialling a new system, SchoolComms, with our
current Year 7 parents. The new system allows
you to see details regarding your child’s
attendance, behaviour and achievement, not
only on a web portal, but also as an App on
your phone. We are also working with our
catering provider to update their system over
the Christmas period so that you will be able
to pay for school dinners and see what your
child has eaten, as well as paying for school
trips. Further details will be sent to all parents
in January.
TLES CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE
Please come and join us to celebrate
Christmas at our Annual Carol Service. This
year it will be held at Long Eaton Baptist
Church on Tuesday 15th December at 7pm. All
welcome.
SCHOOL MATTERS DECEMBER 2015
BANK OF ENGLAND VISIT
We recently welcomed Andy Haldane, Chief
Economist at The Bank of England, to the
school for a visit which was arranged through
the Speakers for Schools scheme. Mr Haldane
is a member of the Monetary Policy
Committee, which makes the monthly
decision about interest rates in the UK, and
last year he was named in Time Magazine’s list
of the 100 Most Influential People in the
World.
A large group of Sixth Form students were
treated to a truly inspirational talk in which Mr
Haldane managed to describe his own job,
explain the functions of the Bank of England
and summarise the story of the global
financial crisis in just 45 minutes. He also
passed on some valuable messages about the
importance of having high aspirations as he
told the story of his own journey from a being
a student at a comprehensive school in the
North of England to holding one of the most
powerful jobs in global finance. There was also
time for a tour of the school and a question
and answer session with some members of
Year 11.
HOLIDAYS IN SCHOOL TIME
circumstances. Further details are contained in
the School’s Leave of Absence policy, which is
available on our website. Please also be aware
that if a holiday is taken without
authorisation, it is likely that the Local
Authority will issue parents with a Fixed
Penalty Notice.
Please could we ask you again to consider very
carefully the consequences of taking time off
before any holidays are arranged during
school time. We would like to thank you for
your cooperation in this matter.
CAREERS FAIR
The School held our annual Careers Fair on
Wednesday 21st October. The event proved to
be a great success. Students from Years 9, 10
and 11 attended with their parents, to talk to
a wide variety of representatives from
business and the higher education community.
The feedback from all concerned has been
very positive – the representatives have been
very complimentary about how interested the
students were in finding out about their
respective industries. We would like to thank
the following organisations for their invaluable
support on the night:3AAA, Boots PLC, British Army, CAGE
(Construction Action Group), Central College
Nottingham, Derbyshire YMCA, Duresta
Upholstery, East Midlands Airport, Erewash
Borough Council, Exporter Services, Grant
Thornton, JTL Training People, Kaplan
Financial,
Loughborough
College,
Loughborough University, National Citizenship
Service, National Space Academy, Prostart,
RARE Ltd, Rolls Royce, Royal Navy, University
of Derby, University of Leicester, University of
Sheffield, Volkswagen Group and Webs
Training.
Although we appreciate the difficulties that
some families have with this issue, ANY
unnecessary time taken off school places at
risk your child’s chances of success. In line
with legislation which was recently tightened
even further by the government, we can only
authorise absence in exceptional

HSC CHRISTMAS PARTY
Year 9 Health and Social Care students at The
Long Eaton School organised a Christmas party
for the students at Stanton Vale, running a
variety of activities and games. Year 11 Hair
and Beauty students also catered for the
Stanton Vale students offering relaxing hand
massages. Members of the 6th form at the
Long Eaton School also took part in the day,
decorating the party room into a winter
wonderland and acting as leaders to the
younger students. All in all, it was a great day
and lovely to see students at the Long Eaton
School provide such lovely experiences. The
Stanton Vale students had a lovely time, which
was topped off by a visit from Santa! A great
time of year to find such good community
spirit, including Lorraine from Balloon
Explosion, in Stapleford, who for the 3rd year
running has donated the balloon table
decorations and also Sweet Williams florist in
Sawley for donating the scented table
arrangement.
SPORTS MATTERS
Year 7 Football
The Year 7 Football team have progressed to
round 5 of the PlayStation English Schools Cup.
The lads have performed magnificently in
previous rounds showing both their defensive
and attacking qualities. In Round 3 they played
Red Hill Academy and the game got took all the
way to penalties which they won 5-4, after a 2-2
draw in normal time. In round 4 they were up
against John Fernley School, which again turned
out to be a tricky encounter due to pitch
conditions and the quality of the opposition. The
lads showed tremendous character to grind out a
2-1 victory even though their own performance
wasn’t up their usual high standard. The team is
now in the last 32 schools left in the country and
face Wigston Academy on Tuesday 15th
December, which has been selected by the ESFA
as the tie of the round. If the team was to
progress, they would be three more games away
from a massive final.
Hockey
Our Hockey team (predominantly Years 7-9) have
been playing their first games of Hockey at
Beeston Hockey club in the Central Venue
League. Despite playing against older and more
established teams, the students have played
with so much enthusiasm and determination,
they continue to improve week after week. The
league has now run for 4 weeks with each team
playing a minimum of 2 matches each week.
Well done everyone for showing true resilience,
team work and respect throughout every game.
Despite not winning any of our games for the
first 3 weeks, all the players gave their all and
really were a credit to themselves and the
school. When other staff from different schools
paid our team compliments on their positive
attitude, this really did make our staff very proud
and their ‘never give up’ attitude paid off in the
final week, where the team drew one and won 3
of their games 
The PE department would like to thank our
resident expert Gareth Griffiths for coaching and
managing the team every week and to Mr
Griffiths from Beeston Hockey club who has very
kindly donated a set of new Adidas tops for the
team.

throughout
the
morning.

the Manager’s player of the tournament.
Many thanks to regular coach and manager on

This Girl Can
This Girl Can is a national campaign developed
by Sport England and a wide range of
partnership organisations to inspire more
women and girls to become active. We have
our own TLES This Girl Can group of students
who have attended Derby University for an
activity day and have met regularly to produce
an assembly for Years 7&8 to help spread the
word to the rest of the school. Our next focus
is to promote the campaign with the design of
our own video to share with the primary
schools next year. Our students are:
Clutterbuck-Allen, Beth - Sully, Eden - Daniels,
Molly - Abbot, Willow - Read, Hollie - Nicholls,
Emma - Padmore, Nellie - White, Molly Briggs, Matilda - Shearing, Maisie - Goodhall,
Heather - Holland, Amelia - Breakwell, Abbie Hughes, Kelsie - Whittall, Chloe
Trampolining
East Midlands Schools Competition
Nearly 50 of our students competed at
Loughborough Leisure Centre on Sunday 6th
December and there were some outstanding
performances, both on and off the trampoline;
students offering support to those having
worries and panics as their first routine may
not have gone to plan. Showing outstanding
resilience to get on the trampoline even when
the warm ups or the first routine did not go to
plan. It is fair to say there were a fair amount
of tears shed during the day. But there were
also a lot of smiles and cheers. Some students
who were not 100% fit, but refused to give up
and wanting to bounce on regardless. All the
students were so supportive of one another.
There were so many brilliant performances,
but of special note there were some
outstanding individual performances; Heather
Goodall who came 3rd in the U14 Inter and
Kate Williams who finished 1st in the U19
Novice. Also the U14 girls inter team who
finished 1st, and the U14 girls novice (B) and
U19 girls novice who both came 2nd. All these
qualify to the next round (the zonals) in Cardiff
on Saturday 23rd January.
The U14 girls novice group had over 140
competitors in it – a huge well done to
Charlotte Crowder who finished 6th and Emma
Nicholls who finished 7th!!! We had a lot of
teams entered into this category – the A, C
and D teams all finished in the top 10!!!
Well done to all the performers.

FOCUS ON CROCUS
The Long Eaton School Eco Committee helped The Rotary Club of Long
Eaton and Interactors plant 3,000 crocus bulbs as part of the
Eradicate Polio Project. Even the cold wind did not deter the
youngsters from helping. The crocus bulbs were sold to the staff and
students of The Long Eaton School for 20p each, the cost of a polio
vaccine. Rotary has been working for many years fund raising to
eradicate polio; worldwide incidents of polio have been reduced by
99%. A spokesperson for Rotary said “Achieving a polio-free world will
prove what’s possible when the global community comes together to
improve children’s lives. No child anywhere in the world should have to
suffer this crippling disease.”

The Long Eaton School Celebrate Food for Life
‘Roast Dinner Day’
Wednesday 4th November was Food for Life’s Annual Roast Dinner Day,
which recognises the dedicated and talented catering teams who work in
schools across the country, producing fresh, well-sourced and nutritious
meals. As part of the celebrations, The Long Eaton School invited 25 staff
and students from neighbouring school, Stanton Vale, who feasted on a
dinner of roast pork with all the trimmings. Lynn Reeve, School Business
Manager and FFL Coordinator stated “we have had a lovely time with staff
and students from Stanton Vale and we will be looking forward to similar
events in the future. A big thank you also to Eden’s kitchen staff for their
hard work and amazing food”.
The national programme, commissioned by Derbyshire County Council, is
led by Local Programme Manager, Angela Bebbington, who commented
"Roast Dinner Day is a great opportunity for schools and caterers to showcase
the amazing work they do in schools every single day to feed and educate our
children. Year on year, more and more schools are getting involved, and for the
first time, we have a Swedish school taking part, who will be serving a roast
dinner to 1,000 pupils!”
The Roast Dinner Day is taking place during National School Meals Week. An
annual celebration in its sixth year, started by Food for Life’s co-founder
Jeanette Orrey, former catering team member at East Bridgford’s St Peter’s
CofE Primary. For further information about the Food for Life Partnership
